So spoke with a very reliable source of mine who has communicated the following to me:

Babar Azam is unhappy with the choice of 6 players who have been selected in the Zimbabwe/South Africa squads.

Babar is not happy that Shahnawaz Dhani has been called up to the Test squad based on some decent performances at PSL6. He feels that players performing in one format are being picked for other formats which makes no sense

Babar is not happy that players are being picked for the Test squad based on performances in the Pakistan Super League

Babar is in favour of some experimentation but not at this late stage when it comes to the T20 squad given that it's a T20 World Cup year

Babar was in favour of Yasir Shah's selection in the Test squad for Zimbabwe but was ignored by the selectors

Mohammad Wasim jr has been picked too soon according to Babar Azam and has been picked based on a couple of decent performances in the PSL, Babar feels that he has talent but is too raw and shouldn't have been picked at this stage of his career

Babar wants a mixture of youth and experience in the squads but lessons need to be learnt from the Naseem Shah selection

Babar wanted players to get a proper and consistent chance rather than getting called up, not being given a chance and then dropped without any reason. The examples being Aamer Yamin and Kamran Ghulam

Babar Azam was in favour of Haris Sohail being picked in the ODI squad, but once again this suggestion was ignored

Babar has communicated to the PCB that he doesn't want to be a dummy captain whose opinions are just ignored again and again. If he is to have the responsibility as captain then his suggestions and opinions regarding selection need to be considered

Babar Azam called Mohammad Wasim up many times after the recent squads were announced but Mohammad Wasim wasn't answering his calls

Eventually when Wasim answered Babar's call the skipper was told that the selection of the squads wasn't his concern

Babar confronted Mohammad Wasim and told him that it was his concern as he is the skipper and is held accountable if the team doesn't perform

Babar has taken the matter to Wasim Khan who is looking into the situation with a view to sorting out the differences
 
Except for the Haris Sohail part, I completely agree with what Babar is saying here.
 
too early but i don.t see any leadership quality in babar azam .he won,t last long as captain
 
Ansolute nonsense...dhani played all first class season and was stand out bowler PSL Just gave some exposure. Yasir Shah should no way be going to zimbabwe fit or not. Haris suhail is finished y go back when you can try shakeel or some one else

Makes sense for some selections.

But not others like Haris and Yasir (who is apparently injured).

Babar has now turned the screw on Selectors by going public. Not his fault as Mohammad Wasim didn't pick up his call and I find it very odd about that bit where he was told that selection of squads wasn't his concern.
Regardless of the fact that Babar is right or wrong, what kind of communication is this with the captain of the team.

I don't want to argue the merits of the complaints or lack thereof, the fact that there are these problems at such an early stage between the selector and captain doesn't bode well for the future.

It's totally on the PCB though, especially Wasim Khan, as it's his job to appoint the right people and do a thorough background check on their personalities and whether they'd work as part of a team.
 
Kind of agree with Baber with most of the stuff.

Dhani and Wasim picked too early i guess.
 
Even though I dont agree with some of Babar's suggestions (i.e. Haris, Yasir, Wahab and Malik), it is the process that is even worse. The Captain should have the veto and the rest of the folks should be the support. The selectors should be scouting talent, getting data and presenting strong arguments in favor of their selection to the Captain. The captain takes the final call as he is incharge of the final result.
 
Babar or any captain should have the final say in the selection. Period.
Hopefully PCB realises this and give him full authority.

Exactly. Regardless of who is right or wrong this is a wrong start for new team.
These kind of exchanges should happen behind close doors. This is what led to the Greg Chappell - Ganguly fights which were totally unnecessary and forced so many players to pick sides.

I think Imad was getting too big and basically shot himself in the foot. He was somehow a candidate for captaincy and when he did not get it, he has been grumpy ever since. The attitude he showed towards the captain Shadab in newzealand was not the first time. I recall he was shouting at Babar in one of the other matches too. I dont think he would be in anyone's good books and most certainly would not make it to the world cup squad now.

Babar is not only the captain but he is the face of Pakistan cricket right now. Wasim should not be upsetting him. I'm glad Babar is not just sitting there and agreeing with everything. He should have a bigger say in selection.

Seems as though Wasim has an ego issue. How can you not take the captains view into consideration? All these decisions went against Babar. What a joke
 
I am glad M.Wasim put Babar in his place. You guys don’t want to have a situation like we have with Indian team. It’s always Kohl’s opinion runs. His dumb decisions have really messed up Indian white ball team selection especially T20s.
 
Babar does have a point He needs to have a voice Hes the best batsman in the team and the long term captain You cant have a situation where his voice isnt heard at all

There needs to be a nice middle ground in the relationship

Theres no consistentcy in selection Whats changed between the last test series and the current where dhani gets in and k ghulam doesnt?
 
I have a feeling that PCB just gave a blank statement that the captain was going to lead the team selection, whereas, in reality, I think Misbah and Mohammad Wasim are still selecting the squads. The captain should have the final word on a player's selection, and they aren't giving him any voice whatsoever.

His example of Naseem Shah was perfect, that he was rushed in and he failed. That might not have set in well with the selectors, but it is the truth.

Similarly, Babar is in charge of all three formats. He needs a pool of players that is reliable. Haris Sohail took that #4 slot through very commendable and consistent performances, and replacing him makes no sense given that he is probably our second-best ODI batsman at the moment. Good player of spin, plays decent cricketing shots, what more is needed. Yes he is unfit, but he was still amongst the runs.

Shahnawaz Dhani's selection is still premature, along with Mohammad Wasim Jr. Secondly, replacing Yasir Shah at the moment makes no sense, especially with Zahid Mahmood. It is a pathetic choice, Zahid was going at more that 4 RPO in the entire QEA Trophy, and does Wasim think he will bring stability to our bowling lineup? We need a spinner who keeps it tight, so Sajid, Nauman, and Yasir would have been the three ideal choices. Yasir is still our best bowler by a fair margin, he has performances and has experience which makes him merit a spot on the team. He stated in an interview that he had recovered from his injury and would start training in the next few days, and Mohammad Wasim stated that he needed 4 weeks of rehabilitation, which makes no sense. One of them is lying.

The point is that a captain's word shouldn't be ignored. If PCB managed to anger Babar Azam, he could realistically relinquish the captaincy and PCB would have nothing left. He is the best player on the team, start treating him with some respect. The coaching staff and Chief Selector need to consult with him as well.

Pathetic behavior.

The Pakistani captain is worried about a Test squad picked to face Zimbabwe. He should be able to take a group of rookies and win against that team.

Pakistani cricket has completely lost its confidence from top to bottom.

Babar is completely right and especially about Haris Sohail who has always been an outstanding ODI batsman and regained form in the recent Pakistan Cup aswell.

Anybody who saw his WC knocks against New Zealand and South Africa knows what a high-quality batsman he is as opposed to the mental midgets crowding out our squads.

The remark by Wasim that team selection was none of Babar's concern is especially arrogant. What he fails to recognize is that it's Babar and Misbah who will have to shoulder the blame if Pakistan loses.

At the end of the day, Wasim is expendable and Babar is indispensable. I hope and pray that Wasim is shown the door somehow. I don't want reconciliation. The only way this problem can be solved is with Wasim's firing.

He is a dummy captain and Misbah's obedient boy. He is lack of leadership abilities. Rizwan should replace him.

So you want Misbah head coach cum selectors so Shehzad, Akmal, S Khan, Imran Khan Sr. returns. Haris was super flop in NZ series will be flop against S Africa as well.

This also suggests, babar was happy with misbah as selector as he was not making such dukb selections like waseeem
 
Mr. PowerPoint will be sacked soon. He is clueless and trying very hard to make himself look like some visionary genius.

His appointment is yet another example of the sheer incompetence and dumb decision-making of Wasim Khan.

Everything he touches turns into rubbish.

I agree with what Babar's saying in principle - I've repeatedly said that any Test debutant must have a significant amount of FC experience under their belt. However Dhani was the best young pacer in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, he's not a PSL wonder. I wouldn't debut him yet but see no harm in having him around the group.

Babar's also being a hypocrite - you want to learn lessons from Naseem Shah's handling but on what basis was Abdullah Shafiq selected ?

Yasir is our premier spinner and should be playing, however if he's not 100% fit then there's no point playing him against Zimbabwe where new spinners can be blooded.

Agree Mohammad Wasim jr has been promoted way too soon. The Kamran Ghulam decision is strange, but I'd be shocked if Younis and Misbah weren't consulted given how hands on they are with the batsmen. Haris Sohail's recent ODI numbers are impressive but his injury record and technique against short ball is suspect.

The communication aspect is most worrying. It's normal for a captain, coach and selectors to have differing views on certain players, but a lack of consultation is unprofessional. Hopefully this gets ironed out behind the scenes.
 
If Babar wants Ifti uncle, Wahab, Malik, Shehzad, Imran Sr, S Khan.... then its better PCB should find someone else. We don't need all these useless TTfs so we can stay around 7-9. Looks like Babar will be future Misbah and wants to block all young players so he looks the best player in the squad.
 
Even though some of Babar's choice might be questionable (Wahab? Malik? Is that true?) but the attitude of the selectors is terrible. How can the captain be ignored entirely and told to keep his nose out of the selection business? While Babar can not have the complete hold over the selection process, his opinions are very important and need to be held in regard. At the end of the day he has to lead the team and be answerable for their performance.
Hope they find a middle ground somewhere.

Did you even bother to read what I said or did you just start typing after you read Haris Sohail?

That was a test series not a one day series. Haris never lost form in ODIs. And the fact that you don't even know the difference between Haris's test performances and his ODI performances shows you are on the same planet as Wasim who doesn't seem to know the difference between PSL performances and FC or List-A performances.

No clue whether this kid is captaincy material yet.

But good of him to try and steer things the way he wants. Captaincy in cricket comes with the presumption that the skipper at the helm is the one calling the shots. Regardless of whether or not the captain really is calling the shots.

If a captain is to lose, he may as well lose with his choicest players and know he tried to play / win in his own mould / style.

The only qualm I have with this is that he should have come out openly *before* accepting this role and stated his demands.

It is very rare to be in a position where one is groomed for years at end for this role in PAK. So when one finds himself in a position of strength and leverage against the cancerous establishment, it is prudent to come out publicly and make clear the demands, and deal an acute blow.

BA has the advantage of star power far more than YK ever did, not to mention the gift of natural talent, but behind that of IK whose aura overwhelmed the bureaucratic cogs of PCB. JM could get things his way in his own style but BA is as far removed from him as can be.

The only question is, is he confident enough to come out publicly and say: ‘Will win or lose on my own terms / players, and will not be a ceremonial / dummy captain.’

Is the alternative a nobody like Wasim trying to con deluded fans? Then yes I would take Misbah.

This whole thing is a farce. If Wasim indeed told Babar that he has nothing to do with squad selection, then that alone is a good enough reason to boot him out.

It is ridiculous to suggest that a captain and a coach should have no input/influence when it comes to squad selection. Every single team in the world is selected with the approval of the captain.

You cannot hold the captain and coach accountable by giving him the players he did not want.

The issue here is that M. Wasim is fishing for cheap praise and wants to make himself look good without taking the input of Babar into consideration.

He is taking shots on the dark and taking punts with left-field choices like Shafique, Dhani, Rauf, Wasim Jr. hoping that one of them will fluke a few good performances and everyone will praise M. Wasim for his great vision and genius eye for spotting talent.

It is all about his agenda and his desire to show-off.

Now other media houses will pick this up and could make Dhani feel bad or not have a good relation with the captain
 
Babar's selections do ring a bell, but they should not be ignored completely if he is the captain of the team. It should be mentioned specifically in the team selection press conference that which players got selected because captain wanted them in team. I remember last year, after we lost a series, it was made public that Malik and Hafeez were recalled bacause Babar wanted them. If those selections are not working, then the captain should be accountable for that.
 
While I agree that Captain’s opinion should have a good weight but, there has to be a balance. Yes, its pretty odd that while Babar has the chance to give his point of view, that is not debated in the meetings rather just accepted or ignored without having having any discussions or reaching to conclusions about them. As per the recent structure Babar has the main say in selecting the playing XI and obviously consultations with head coach is done as well but, final power of squad selection rests with Mohammad Wasim.

We shouldn’t forget Babar is a young captain so the influence in the squad selection will come with time and performances but, his points should be discussed and reached upon conclusions in the meeting.

I am not sure how different structures around work but, if captain is going to select the complete squads himself than its raises a question that what exactly is the role of a chief selector. Is chief selector like a talent scout who when asked about a player in certain role will provide options to the captain?

Maybe they should look into the structures of Eng and NZ around as their selections and performances have been pretty on point in last 5-7 years.

As far as i know he wanted 11 players none of whom are selected.

The names that are out are Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz in t20, Haris Sohail in tests i heard and iftikhaar and Khushdil in t20 and also Yasir shah in tests.
 
Misbah and Babar prefer seniors and that is what you could see in Misbah's selections as well. They are afraid to lose and want to keep it safe. Also some of the senior guys now are friends of Babar.

Mohammad Wasim is probably Pakistan's last chance of getting a balanced squad with seniors and some very good youngsters.

Abdullah Shafiq is the only one selected on the basis of ability alone. But didn't Babar support his inclusion when Misbah selected him? Why the hypocrisy?

It's the same reason why Misbah kept selecting TTF's: they are afraid to go under in SA against SA.

Fans bashed Misbah and now the same people are supporting Babar.

Very difficult to understand what people actually want.

I tell you what's going on here. Misbah isn't happy with the selections and Babar is the messenger because he is the dummy captain.
 
I feel that it's Misbah and Waqar in the background who are pushing Babar to rant about non selection of his choices in public so that the pressure shifts on the selection panel. In the ideal world, this is what Misbah and Waqar want because their jobs are under tight scrutiny and they are not sure about winning in South Africa against their full strength squad. They are probably playing this card to save their jobs.

If he is good he should be selected whether Babar likes him or not. Babar is the captain doesn't mean he can block/ruin any deserving player.

Haris looks seriously out of form plus he has fitness issue. I agree he is good in ODI and shouldn't be in test. But since he has problem with short-pitch ball he may fail in ODI against S Africa fast bowlers.

I side with Muhammad Wasim on giving babar a shut up call. When you want the likes of Malik, Wahab, Khusdhil back in the team, you deserve shut up calls and bunch of slaps too.

Exactly that's another hypocritical argument from Babar. He says he doesn't want repeat of Naseem Shah situation, yet how many FC matches has Haris Rauf played ?

Dhani has actually played a full FC season unlike Rauf. Not saying Dhani should debut yet, but he was the best young pacer in QEA Trophy.

Babar demanding Shoaib Malik and Wahab Riaz's inclusion for a T20 series in Zimbabwe is also baffling and shows he's very much in the Misbah/Waqar mould of short-term, conservative selections with no regard for future planning.

I really hope this is a sign of things to come.

Babar needs to show some spine as captain otherwise incompetent babus like Mohammad Wasim who don't know jack about cricket will be allowed to run wild and destroy Pakistan cricket like they have on several occasions in the past. Because of the seeming lack of rational minded individuals in Pakistan we need a strong captain and Misbah, for all his shortcomings as chief-selector will go down as one of the greatest captains in the history of Pakistan cricket.

He understood individuals. He understood how to keep the team in-line and was a great leader. It was unfortunate that Pakistan had one of their worst ever teams under him but there isn't a better individual to be grooming Babar than Misbah.

So frankly, I don't care if this is coming from Misbah. The fact of the matter is that it is right. And I am glad that the coach and captain are on the same page against this clown who has managed to con his way to the chief-selector job.
 
im sorry but why have a chief selector if the captain is going to throw a dummy because 3-4 players that he didnt want were picked. And these 3-4 are not TTF but new talent, which should always be tried on away tours against zimbabwe.

Because Haris Rauf wasn't selected for the first time in this series. He was selected for the first time against South Africa.

Doesn't mean that isn't any less of a brainless selection by that clown.

You didn't watch the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy then.

Dhani was the only one getting the ball to consistently bounce on those low, slow Karachi pitches. He was the best U25 pacer of the tournament.

He shouldn't debut yet though, and neither should Rauf for that matter.

Wahab is not going to play over Hasan Ali who is our premier pacer when fit.

Most Pakistani cricketers do tbh. They don’t really like or trust the junior development process. It’s the other way round in SENA countries
 
This is also shows that Babar isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Misbah has been the worst thing for Babar's career for two reasons:

1. During the 2016/17 Australia tour, he made Babar bat at 3 even though he was too raw to be taking that kind of responsibility.

2. Dropped him when he was playing for ISLU

Now, Babar is being Misbah's puppet.

He has never convinced me as leadership material and this only reinforces my view on his captaincy credentials.

Why does it matter who it is coming from when the person saying it is right?

Pakistan needs Imad Wasim, Shoaib Malik, Fakhar Zaman and Wahab Riaz if we are to have any cahnce of winning the T20 World Cup.

In that case I think Faheem Ashraf is two poor performances away on the eve of the World Cup to be replaced by Hasan Ali
