Babar Azam's batting in pressure situations

I have heard so many people here accuse Hashim of scoring 'soft' runs when there is no pressure. Well at least his 'soft' runs end up in victories for RSA more often than not. I wonder what you guys make of Shafiq, Azhar and Azam's runs? because they hardly, if ever, perform under pressure and even when they score some runs while not under pressure, the team still goes on to lose!

Amla has never been accused of scoring soft runs in Test cricket. His peak, albeit a short one, was brilliant.

Amla is a top batsman and everyone recognizes that. He mostly gets heat here due to one poster. Babar Azam has long way to go to be anywhere close to become a batsman like Amla.

Have seen enough of Babar Azam to know he is just another Azhar Ali and Shafiq. Only does well on top and when the match situation is in his comfort zone, any slight existence of massive pressure and he will collapse. But what can we do when these are the best players we have

Good inn when chips were down. He will learn. At 24 he is just starting out. No need chest thump

Can he take Pakistan to a respectable score today batting under pressure.

Batting with the tail , what can he do with them? A disgrace that Shan Masood is batting at 3 and Babar isn't.

He should be back at 4 with Azhar at 3. When Harris Sohail comes back they can play Harris at 5 or push Azhar at the top and Harris at 3 with Babar at 4.

You can always do something.

Surely you are not going to play a perfect test innings or score a hundred but still, to keep most of the strike, to score as much as you can, (40-60 runs) and also tire the SaF bowlers.

Time for a batting order promotion.

Asad "useless" Shafiq should be demoted back to #6

Asad should be booted out. I feel its disgraceful he avearges 39 despite playing most of his career in Asia . I bet Imran Farhat would have averaged more if he didn't open

yeah...he is lucky to play this many Test matches after performing so inconsistently over the years.

Babar is running out of partners again....Mickey needs to use his brain and send him at 4 or 5.

Fakhar at 6 could be a good idea. Feed the two mediocre openers to their pacers and change the rest of the batting order.

Absolutely showing that he has it in him
What An Innings today. Owned Steyn.

Azhar, Shan, Haris, Babar, Shafiq, Fakhar.

Azhar surely has to open, how many more pathetic openers must we recycle before admitting we were wrong to demote Azhar ? He is the most technically equipped to face the new ball.

Promote Babar to 4 and allow Fakhar to play counterpunching knocks at 6 when the new ball loses its shine.

I'm his biggest fan and was in awe of what he was doing to the ATG, but the situation was almost a free hit compared to a 4th innings chase.
That is despite me genuinely believing we can get back into the game with a good session after tea.
We need to go all out!!!

It takes something special to boss around arguably the best bowler ever in his own den on a difficult pitch

He did well with the tail today but he should be batting up the order.

I have always rated Babar. Best thing about him is he knows how to pace his innings. Playing in your comfort zone is crucial. Babar succeeding in tests was just a matter of time. He has few technical issues and is not a rash strokeplayer. I wish you best of luck.

Audition is over. Babar is ready. Mickey should stop shielding Babar from the new ball and let him bat at 4 like the best batsmen in other teams do.

Makes it difficult to decide, do we want a prolific player who fails in pressure situations and matches or do we want a slightly in consistent player but always fires in pressure situations and in big pressure games.

Babar is a very good batsman but we must understand his limitations:

He does not have the ability to be a factor in big run chases, and neither is he someone who can play those extraordinary innings that signal a once in a generation talent.

He is just a prolific scorer who can be easily managed by top teams. There is no wow factor to his batting and he doesn’t have any real presence.

To be honest, even when he is scoring his body language does not inspire much confidence. Something just gives that against tough opponents in tough conditions, he will be very vulnerable. He does not have the ability to counter attack in tough situations and needs an set of relaxed conditions to score runs. I think the team should ideally just let him open the innings so that he can benefit from an early start rather than coming in when a quick wicket has fallen

I think its time for Pakistan to move on from seeing Babar as some kind of a messiah and find another person who can fill that role. Think Saif Badar is the closest person to fit the bill.

Few things cannot be coached, and Babar is probably the most well-coached batsman in the country. He has been under PCB’s wing since he was 13, and has had access to the best coaches and facilities in the country.

You either have the mentality and the character to deliver under pressure or you don’t. They are traits and traits cannot be drilled into you.

It is Pakistan’s great misfortune that its best batsman in over a decade happens to be a softie.

He's showing signs of being a mentally weak player.

Doesnt show the desire to win big games for the team which means he plays for himself.

The batting standards in this team have regressed so much that nobody even talks about match-winning abilities of any batsman. Players are all after averages by scoring cheap runs and then boasting about their hollow achievements on social media.

No batting culture in Pak. It might take years to get rid of this mediocrity.

Babar softie.

Babar reminds me of M Yousuf...who also went missing when it came to pressure situations.
He is no Inzy, YK, Miandad or Imran.

I also believe Babar is more like Moyo, too many soft runs.

Doubt Pakistan are producing any test batsmen who is better than Younis Khan in recent times.

He and pressure don't go well together. I like his batting at least he scores when there is no pressure, otherwise we had batsmen who can't even do that

This thread is full of people showing lack of patience and foresight.

Team management believes Azhar is our best batsman. And thats exactly where Pakistan is playing their best batsman.

His innings today was superb. One of the best innings under pressure I've seen in recent times.

After English summer Babar is a different batsman in test, talent and technique was always there, mental side has developed a lot in last 6 months, it’s time to promote him to no 4, so that he has enough time to bat with real batsmen, our tail is too short, he does not need to suffer through that...

He is averaging 60 in test this year, that could have been 75 if he does not have to bat with tail. Often he has lost his wicket, trying to bat with tail which is unfortunate, because your best batsman needs to bat high up the order with real batsmen...

Not too good in todays pressure game with score of 2(5), this was going to be most important innings of the series!

He is not failing just because of pressure. Every time he gets out cheaply can't be simply blamed on pressure.

He played a quality inning in first test but consistency is the issue currently. Once he addresses that, he will become a world class test batsmen.

Azhar should bat at 3, Babar at 4, Fakhar at 6.

If Fakhar bats at 6, he might actually be good considering the ball is at least 25-30 overs old before he comes.

Pakistan is already out of this match, so tweaks in the batting order will help for the next match.

Yes, Openers have the toughest job in test cricket, seeing off the new ball. No wonder kaptaan loves that number 6 spot so much, scoring off the old ball is much easier.

You are right but thing is most of his 'cheap' dismissals have been in pressure situations. It means he is a class batsman otherwise, just need to improve mental strength.

He seems like a decent batsman, not ATG material as of now like some PPer's are claming him, but he can reach there by hard work & didication next 10 -15 tests will decide his bracket. He need to score runs in bulk as of now he seems scoring those nice 40,50 before giving it away.

A lot of his dismissals are bizzare. He manages to keep most good balls out but does something stupid like in his last innings where he dropped the hands on a ball that wasnt short enough.

Exactly, thats what pressure does. Hes not mentally tough yet.

Do you watch the game, I thought the same thing as you but went back and checked after someone pointed out the below.
First day of the game he had just seen Asher get out to a ball a few overs prior which bounced.
The ball he got out on bounced on the same spot and look at the difference in bounce.Screenshot_20190105-093019.jpg

Same bowled, same speed, if you have just seen Azhar get out, how do I expect him to play this ball.
Please do reply to me

But, but he made a 70, he plays classy shots.

Bottom line why Pakistan still lost?

This amazing batsman was averaging 6 in NZ tour 2017/18 lol. Averaged around 17-23 at no.3. In order to protect this PCB darling from failing consistently they put him in no. 6 so that he can't face the new bowl.

Point taken. This ball didnt bounce as much as it should have.

Babar Azam, this is your time

Pakistan is batting first in this match. All those 50's, 60's and 70's in this tour has so far convinced everyone that you do have potential. Now is the time to take yourself to the next level.

The series is one the line, and this is the deciding match. It's one thing to be dismissed off a very good delivery. But do not, I repeat, do not throw away your wicket if you do get a start. You have done it consistency so far in this tour. And it's been honestly disappointing.

Now is the time. Good luck, and do get a big score!

Has everyone been lying or something that batting first on this pitch is a must??

Why did SA choose to bowl?? A blunder really.

But this is set up perfectly for babar. 100 should be on the cards

Agree with what you said, these are the times when Pakistan really need him to make a positive difference.

It's never good for a #3 to have to come in so early. Regardless, let's see how he does. He is off the mark. And now a brilliant shot for a boundary.

Babar azam has played well throughout this series but needs that 100.

What a way to get out, His trying too many things to score quickly. I have seen recently his been exposing his leg stump to score more runs on legs side. Its risky.

Disappointed! Even Michael Holding sounds disappointed. He was looking so good.

I believe he needs a County stint. He needs to refine his talent.

We need to accept him for what he is. A very good but soft player. Don’t expect him to come good in high pressure games - doesn’t have the mental edge.

He will eventually work it out. Still doing more than enough to maintain average over 45. But he is trying to score more quickly recently I dont think thats needed from him. Even kholi only one out of every 7/8 innings is quicker than run a ball he only makes it up towards the end.

He is playing extremely well. He looks in good shape for the world cup. JAMODIs don't matter. Babar has already shown he's got class. Everything else is immaterial.

He definitely needs to work it out soon. Like I said before, while he's a young bloke and has plenty of time, that doesn't mean should keep wasting valuable time. What's worrying is that he has looked so good on so many of his innings. Yet he has been unable to convert them into hundreds. This is something he really, really needs to work on.

In the last ODI series decider he played he scored 92(100).

Ok disappointed today. Though what about the last match he can in at 3/1 wasn't that a pressure situation too?

At least he is trying to play positively now.
