Babar Azam's batting in pressure situations

Even the banned ashraful of be was great in his 30-40s. Hope Babar doesn't become one
 
Babar was very elegant yesterday in some shots. Resembled Kohli; need to learn from Kohli ..who before we notice... reaches 40s by just singles and all ground shots...builds his innings and fires astonishingly when needed after getting settled. Babar is sure to become a gifted batsman...he should refrain throwing himself out all of a sudden.

Yeah, true. People might be doing ooh and aahs over seeing those silky cover drives from Babar yesterday, reality was that he hardly ever rotated strike during his short stay at wicket. Rotating strike is perhaps as important as hitting boundaries. People often forget its importance. Indian team during fab-4 too was guilty of that.
 
And yeah, Kohli is one of a kind and that's why he averages what no bat ever did after playing that many games at such a S/r.

It is actually more important in the modern game.

There was never a FAB 4 in one dayer. Gambhir, Sehwag, Tendulkar very good in stealing singles. Ganguly was a bit lazy though. But he made up in other areas.
 
Babar is not that good to begin with!!!!! He is good by Pakistan standard only.
 
He was going good. But that was a very good ball by Kuldeep. It happens.

He has his problems for sure but today he just got a good one. And he played well till he got out, singles and doubles with the odd boundary, much better than what he was a year ago.
 
Got out in almost similar fashion as he did in asia cup to kuldeep. Pathetic:

He got an excellent ball to be fair...the rest of our dismissals were soft...
 
Have always said that he's a big match bottler. Will play those 40s knock and get out against tough teams.

There is nothing similar about the two. One was a googly the other a conventional spinner. On one ball he mistimed coming down the track and on the other it turned far more than expected. One was a brain freeze the other was a very good delivery.

I think now those who inflate his technique needs to be ashamed of themselves.

Chahal has exploited the area between his bat and pad for as long back as Asia Cup. There also he got out bowled by Chahal showing him to bowl through the gate [area between his glove and pad].

TRust me there are way better technical players in Pak domestic circuit than this bad investment of an Akmal. Even Biarstow or Roy won't get out like hedoes as he is so poor technically for the incoming leg spin.
 
69 off 80 balls today.

Mixed bag.

As soon as he goes for a big shot he's out.

He did what was required of him which was to anchor the innings and prevent a collapse but to be one of the best he has to learn how to finish an innings. He's not there yet.
 
I have come to the conclusion that the guy understands his limitations ie he can't attack at will if his life depends on it which is why he always falters at the death

It is simply not his game to hit big, he should learn to accept his limitations as a batter and work from there. Do you see Williamson trying to slog with 10 overs left? Strike rotation is what he has to work upon, big scores will come easier then.

Also, I don't know what to make of him as #1 T20i batsman. I'd probably pick 10 batsman over him in that format. Very strange.

He's very consistent in t20is which is the reason he's no.1. Strike rate isn't looked at when ICC make the rankings.
 
The shot was similar to the one kohli played against starc. Phehlukwayo's lack of pace is the difference here. Good knock today
 
Decent knock, kept the innings together and prevented a collapse. He really needs to work on his hitting though.
 
Was hoping he pulled out the slog sweep at some point. He can play it like against chahal last week. Only a 7 out of 10 innings today for glueing it together.

His bat tilted. He was looking for gap ending up going straight to man at mid wicket.
 
Some people will insist this was not a pressure situation.

1)Team was being bashed and even outright abused.

2) 2 wickets had fallen within a small bracket of runs and then Hafeez got out. Pakistan has been collapsing badly in this WC.

3) Pakistan had to win the match if they wanted to have any chance of staying in the tournament.

This innings was absolutely crucial for us and held the innings together. Just because it was not as good as Harris's innings it doesn't mean it wasn't an important one nor does it mean there wasn't pressure.

Babar at the moment doesn't have the power game to play the sort of defining knock that Harris or Fakhar can play. But he plays great supporting knocks.

Babar and similar batsmen will never have the strength to muscle the ball for sixes. It's not just about strength, hitting has its own technique. Babar's weight doesn't go into the stroke, which is what generates the power. A great example is Hafeez, if you see his straight sixes you will note how his entire body moves into the shot. Babar has good weight shift when playing drives along the ground but when he goes into slog mode he looses his shape completely.

Move than hitting, he needs to improve strike rotation- taking more singles and converting 1's into 2's

Can't play 3-4 consecutive dot balls at any stage of an ODI
 
Big day for Babar today. The team needs a 100 from him - 60 or 70 or 80 will not be enough.
 
Slowing down a bit and has struggled vs spin. But it is important he sticks it out and does not play a rash shot.
 
Babar has been superb. Even when he was struggling he didn't throw it away.

Just needs to see his team home today.
 
Come on Babar win us the game. Just needs to keep the 2s coming every over.
 
If he had gotten out on 40, we would have lost this match. He held his nerves. Very well played.
 
Hopefully the start of the phase of his career where he will start taking games to the end for Pakistan. Superb inning.
 
Babar hype about to go through the roof on this place.

I give it an hour before someones says Kohli has never scored a 100 chasing in WC.
 
I hope people are starting to realise the difference between handling pressure and lack of ability.

If the chase had demanded something like 50 runs needed of 35 balls Babar probably would not have been able to take us home not because of the pressure but because he lacks the ability to hit at will.

This chase didn't demand Babar to up the ante meaning that it was within his capabilities.

And people should know this is not the highest pressure innings by Babar. Babar's 46 in the CT final was a much more high stakes innings and was crucial for the victory. Pakistan has a history of messing up good starts and ending up well short of score they should get. Babar kept things together that innings despite struggling initially. If not for his 46 we might well have been 250 all out. That innings showed Babar at least isn't another Amla who completely crumbles under pressure.
 
I think he is working on this aspect of his game. Today's match is a good starting point.
 
Babar has done more than Amla could in his world cup career. So please stop with the comparisons with Softie Amla now.
 
One of the best innings of a Pak batsman in a wc. Shame on those who are still bashing Babar.

I will be called a hater if I say this was an easy run chase.

To be fair to Azam this was indeed a pressure situation which could easily go any way if the batting didnt stabilize. In a bilateral series this will be equivalent to a 270 or 280 run chase because of the pressure of a world cup game. So credit to Babar this was a difficult run chase that seemed easier than it actually was. His first knock in a pressure situation congratulations to him. Hopefully many more to come from him
 
This should give him a lot of confidence and belief. The 1st time is always the most difficult. Confident he will do even better in the next run chase. Enjoy watching him bat.
 
Reading the replies on this thread. Way too many clueless fans have been exposed. I said a few weeks ago that the poor performance of our team has affected the thought process of some Pakistanis
 
Good thing is that he is improving his range and Grant Flower deserves credit for it as well. In last few months he has played quite a few slog sweeps and has smashed sixes of the bat foot against spinners. This aspect was missing in his game previously.

Also, the induction of Imam has allowed Babar to play more freely because there is less burden on him to anchor the innings. I have not checked but Babar's strike rate must have improved since Imam's debut.
 
Is Babar Azam already better player in pressure situations than Hashim Amla?

Babar is second fastest to score 3000 ODI runs after Hashim Amla. But Hashim has been never been a big player in pressures (just scored his First Fifty in the world cup in a inconsequential match.)Looking at Babar's innings against NZ,is Babar seems already a better player in pressure situations.
 
Babar’s innings against New Zealand is more significant than anything Amla has produced under pressure, so the answer is a resounding yes.
 
Don't think Amla is worth anything at this point.
