The first bilateral series after a World Cup is often seen as a “new beginning,” and that is certainly the case for Bangladesh and Pakistan ahead of their three-match ODI series starting in Dhaka on Wednesday. Pakistan have included six uncapped players in their 15-man squad, reportedly as a response to their early T20 World Cup exit. Bangladesh, meanwhile, return to international cricket after a three-month break, having missed the World Cup due to political issues.
Bangladesh’s coaches believe the team needs improvement in the middle phases of both batting and bowling. They are testing a new middle-order combination with Litton Das and Afif Hossain returning, while openers Saif Hassan and Soumya Sarkar will be expected to provide a quick start.
Although Bangladesh have struggled in their last three ODI series, their bowling remains a strength. Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain are likely to handle most of the pace duties, with captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam supporting them.
Pakistan’s lineup has generated plenty of curiosity, with four uncapped top-order batters in the squad. Sahibzada Farhan, Shamyl Hussain and Maaz Sadaqat could feature in the top three, placing greater responsibility on experienced players like Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha.
However, much will depend on captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, who will lead the attack with the new ball alongside Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim. The spin department appears thin, with Abrar Ahmed the only experienced option.
Pakistan squad: Shaheen Shah Afridi (captain), Abdul Samad, Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Faisal Akram, Haris Rauf, Hussain Talat, Maaz Sadaqat, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Saad Masood, Sahibzada Farhan, Salman Ali Agha and Shamyl Hussain
Bangladesh squad: Mehidy Hasan Miraz (c), Afif Hossain, Litton Das, Mahidul Islam Bhuiyan, Mustafizur Rahman, Nahid Rana, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Rishad Hossain, Saif Hassan, Shoriful Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Tanvir Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Tawhid Hridoy
