Hosts Bangladesh, reeling from their loss to Afghanistan in the previous game, will take on Zimbabwe in the first match of the Chittagong leg of the T20 International tri-series.

Overview
Bangladesh v Zimbabwe, 4th match, T20I tri-series
Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong
Wednesday, 18 September; 06:30pm local, 12:30pm GMT

Bangladesh were at the receiving end of a spirited performance by Afghanistan, who notched up their 12th consecutive T20I win, beating their own record in international cricket. The hosts went for a change in their batting order, but the experiment did not work, as they lost their first four batsmen for 32 runs, and eventually the match by 25 runs.

While pacer Saifuddin was in sublime touch in the previous game, extracting movement off the surface consistently and snaring four wickets, a major cause of worry was their bowling at the death. After keeping Afghanistan under check for 15 overs, they went for 55 runs in the final five overs.

Zimbabwe faced the exact same issue in their face-off against Afghanistan. Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi slammed seven successive sixes to open up Zimbabwe’s death-bowling frailties. And while their fast bowlers Tendai Chatara and Kyle Jarvis went for runs aplenty, Zimbabwe would derive confidence from how their spinners kept a tight leash in the middle-overs. The experienced Sean Williams stemmed the flow of runs with his stringent lines, and was well-supported by the debutant Ainsley Ndlovu.

Bangladesh’s Soumya Sarkar, who was demoted in the batting line-up at the expense of Mushfiqur Rahim, has been excluded from the squad for the next two games, after garnering just four runs from two innings. Instead, Bangladesh have included top-order batsman Mohammad Naim, and all-rounder Aminul Islam Biplob, while also drafting in Rubel Hossain and Shafiul Islam.

The last time they met

The two teams faced off in the opening game of the tri-series, with Bangladesh clinching a three-wicket win in a rain-curtailed game. Ryan Burl scored a crucial 57* that pushed Zimbabwe past 140 in their allotted 18 overs. Their pacers then reduced Bangladesh to 60/6, before Afif Hossain saw Bangladesh through with a 26-ball 52 at No.8.

What they said

Hamilton Masakadza, Zimbabwe captain: “The last two games, we haven't executed in the back end, but the boys are working really hard. The only positive thing coming out [from their match against Afghanistan], was how we batted towards the end and how the spinners bowled in the middle overs.”

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh captain: “We wanted to be positive, we wanted to get a good start [against Afghanistan]. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and we struggled big time. We gave them a lot of extras, we need to overcome these small hurdles.”

Conditions

A fresh surface awaits in Chittagong, after the wear and tear that the Mirpur pitch must have undergone following three back-to-back games. There is no rain forecast.

The last T20I at this venue dates back to 2014, the year in which all 17 T20Is at this ground were played, a majority of them as part of the T20 World Cup. The last ODI at this venue, in 2018, featured these very two teams, with Bangladesh chasing down a 287-run target with almost eight overs to spare.

Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Williams believes hosts Bangladesh will be under pressure when the teams face off for the second time in the tri-series on Wednesday, September 18, in Chattogram.

Both Zimbabwe and Bangladesh went down to Afghanistan in their previous games, keeping the contest open. Zimbabwe also lost their opening game to Bangladesh, leaving them in a must-win situation if they are to keep their chances alive of making it to the final. Williams, though, is confident that his team can make a comeback.

"If we focus on what we need to do, everything will take care of itself," he insisted. "They are under pressure, we know that.

"Again, it goes back to us doing the basics," he said. "Bangladesh [are] a very strong team all round. They have got a very good structure going all the way down to the club levels ... They have got some very very good players, some very experienced campaigners. They have Shakib [Al Hasan], Mahmudullah, Mushi [Mushfiqur Rahim]. You know they are all very good players and we respect that fact."

Williams, one of the most experienced players in his team alongside skipper Hamilton Masakadza, Brendon Taylor and Craig Ervine, called for Zimbabwe's senior players to step up and inspire the junior lot.

"What we do as senior players is important as a backbone of the team to teach them for the future," he said. "Obviously, there have been a few of us under-performing of late. So we need to step up as a senior group and obviously get the junior following. They got us out of trouble twice now. If the seniors can step up ... we have a very good chance."

We have learnt a lot from what we have been through. And I think you can see the team starting to bond more and more and come together more as a unit.
Sean Williams

Zimbabwe Cricket has been in a difficult phase in recent months, suspended from participating in ICC tournaments. Williams believes success in Bangladesh will contribute to the team's revival.

"It is extremely important," he said. "We have learnt a lot from what we have been through. And I think you can see the team starting to bond more and more and come together more as a unit."

If Zimbabwe loses this, they are out.

Bangladesh should look to put up a good show after the horror against Afghanistan.

Bat Afif Hossain up the order.

Also why isn't Afif given the ball to bowl his offies ?

Mahmudullah is a better spinner than Mosaddek.

I think at this stage of career, Mushfiqur should give the gloves to Liton and concentrate only on his batting.

If Shakib doesn't want to captain, don't think he should lead then. I would look at Miraz as a long term captaincy option and Mahmudullah as a short term captaincy option.

My XI for Ban:

1. Mohammad Naim
2. Mushfiqur Rahim
3. Shakib Al Hasan (C)
4. Afif Hossain
5. Mahmudullah Riyad
6. Liton Das (WK)
7. Mosaddek Hossain
8. Aminul Islam
9. Mohammad Saifuddin
10. Taijul Islam
11. Mustafizur Rahman

Bangladesh are playing three place bowlers today. This is a good move.

It is better to play pacer than crap spinner.

Zimbabwe reduced the defeat margin but they didn't really go after it.

136/8.

40 needed from 3 balls.

136/10.

Mustafiz reaches his 50th wicket in T20I career. Congratulations.

Bangladesh have won this. Zimbabwe are out.

Mahmudullah blitz sets up convincing
Bangladesh win over Zimbabwe

Bangladesh recorded a sizeable 39-run win over Zimbabwe to get their tri-series campaign back on track after their previous game’s defeat to Afghanistan.

Having been inserted, the hosts racked up 175/7, a total that would prove more than enough to do for Zimbabwe. Each of their top five made it into double figures, with Liton Das carrying onto 38 off 22 and Mushfiqur Rahim contributing a useful 32 off 26.

The latter’s knock came in 78-run partnership with Mahmudullah, who blasted five sixes to go with a solitary four in his 41-ball 62 before falling in the final over. The Tigers stumbled somewhat towards the end of their innings, and their eventual total might have been 10 runs shy of what they would have fancied making before Mushfiqur’s dismissal. Kyle Jarvis took 3/32, while Sean Williams and Tinotenda Mutombodzi were both economical.

Still, the eventual margin looked like being a huge one as Zimbabwe lost three wickets early on before sliding further to 66/7. Hamilton Masakadza offered the only resistance early on with a run-a-ball 25, helping his team recover slightly from 8/3 before he was struck in front.

The wickets were shared around, with Shafiul Islam and Aminul Islam taking two wickets each before the former came in for some tap from Richmond Mutumbami, who smashed 54 off 32 to help his side avoid ignominy.

However, Zimbabwe never looked like recovering from their poor start, and Shafiul would have the last laugh, getting Mutumbami to hole out to short third man before Mustafizur Rahman cleaned up the tail, taking him to 50 T20I wickets. He is the fourth fastest bowler in history to the landmark.

The victory takes Bangladesh joint top in the standings with Afghanistan, though the hosts have played one game more. Zimbabwe, four points adrift with one game left to play, are now out of contention for the title.
