What's new

Bangladesh [261] beat Sri Lanka [124] by 137 runs in the first match of the 2018 Asia Cup

It was mainly due to the efforts of Akila Dhananjaya who hasnt joined the squad yet. However, Bang has outperformed srl but in no way a ruthless performance. Both sides have made mistakes but Srl made more

Agreed, but SRL isnt as weak as it is made out to be is what I am saying. Cricket is usually individual team performance. Kholi alone can change the entire outcome of a game...or herath. In this game, Mushy did.

Mushi & Tamim has inspired boys. I hope it doesn’t balance out against AFGs😝

In dinesh Chandimal injured or Its just poor selection from srl?

Definitely not a weak team, srl is an international team so nothing can be taken away from Bd but they should work on their mistakes as not all teams will let them get away in cruicial moments

Yeah. this asia cup could been best with Kholi and full strength BD and Pak team.

These days SRL has become a hit & miss team. Absolutely smashed IND in SL, then handed the game to PAK with poor catching. Few months back routes us inside 10 overs, then this!!! They play Test, ODI, T20 in same tempo - only that in Test their spin duo are world class.

Won’t be surprised if they end up winners by Asia Cup at the end.

This is exactly what I was saying. they got destroyed by RSA in first three games, but came back and beat RSA back to back to loose the series only 2-3 versus one of the best ODI team.

But here most folks are busy trying to compare AFG with BD and SRL lol.

If this is 1st day wicket, don’t think future looks good for the tournament and they are using only 2 venues.

250 is still competitive these days on balanced pitches and team batting first. It's not easy to chase 250 under pressure.

You have to learn ignoring lots of posts, I do.

Mehdi Hasan looks like one of the best upcoming off spinners, like his drift on the ball. Unfortunately there arent many upcoming off spinners though. Ones I can think of is Dominic Bess of England, Washington Sundar of India and nothing else I guess.

But, there are more picthes on each of these venue which will be rotated I guess

UAE isnt that high scoring generally in comparison to Eng of now a days

Pitch has no demons. I hVent seen any turn lol

Extremely slow & getting low - check number of LBW & Bowleds. Most catches were from top edge slogs, which suggests ball is stopping a bit & tennis ball bounce on first day. Even if they use other tracks, wickets exposed under sun in such heat doesn’t last long. Abu Dhabi is even worse than this.

They just manhandled you in T20s and the one series against you was closely fought. For your sake I hope you win against them otherwise this post will come back to haunt you. :))

Looking how Mithun batted it's not too difficult. If Bangladesh batted sensibly they would score 300. But Lanka bowling is bad.

It's not a 280 wicket but you can score 250 odd. I personally think under 300 targets are more fun

Alas! Missed this match completely due to very busy time in my private chamber.Great fight back by Bangladesh. A true sign of a good ODI team.Feeling proud and disappointed at the same time :dw

Guys like Rohit and Rahul will struggle badly on such wickets.

I was following our batting via CI, but Mithun is a brilliantly ant player of spin, picks length early, uses feet & can loft effortlessly, particularly offices. And Mushi is best player of spin in this tournament. That partnership was between two best players of spin in this game. It’ll not be easy in later stages.

Yup, lol we are going to have get used to this so early, good thing is i see Bumrah ,Chahal well here if this pitch remains.
Not too sure of Kuldeep.

Bowlers are going to do pretty well. I expect kuldeep to do well also. Batting will be a struggle though.

Mind boggling honestly.

Their first test win overseas was in PAKISTAN and first overseas test series victory against Pak -1998

Zim' also first test win was against Pak in 1994.

Seriously can't you google before bringing India's stats against Zim up?

Overseas win? Since when did we start discussing overseas wins? Jumping goal posts already? I thought we were talking about how Zimbabwe shouldnt be counted minnows because they beat India in the 90s.

Alright, even going by your logic, if Zimbabwe beat Pakistan overseas and what not, does that makes them non-minnows?

Why is it bothering you, mate? Is it because Pakistan's T20 ranking is on the line? And if proved wrong, the ranking's credibility comes under question? No complaints about the ranking system now, is there?

Its bothering me because for us Pakistanis having fun is winning matches and being on top. Maybe for you lot and your neighbours the defninition is different. After all wasnt that your coach who said Indian team and Kohli should be appreciated for their performance in England. Embarrassing.

He should have said T20 is not a real measure of cricketing skills. Afghanistan haven't beaten us in a Test yet so we can save that discussion for a later time.

BD are improving as a Test side. We've managed to beat England and Australia at home, so I'd imagine we could do the same to SA or NZ as well. Thats half of the "big teams" you speak off, so not terribly bad. Pakistan and India have very poor records away from home despite playing the game for the better part of a century. BD have only been playing for a quarter of that time span, and even less than that as a serious team.

T20 is not a real measure of cricketing skills? Why do players like Pujara, Shafiq, Azhar, Rahane etc. suck in t20Is then for example? I mean they are pretty good in test cricket than t20Is must be a peice of cake then right?

Look buddy, beating teams in solitary matches at home and then comparing with Pakistan/India who beat these teams for lunch at home is a bit of a ridiculous comparison. Your fellow rather than downplaying formats should have been realistic.

One sided match. But it was expected to happen. Bangladesh could've easily scored 320 the way they were batting.

Everybody knew as the second best Asian ODI team BD would be all over srilanka.

You're caught in your own lies there, aren't you? You can't have it both ways. So, which one is it, mate? Are you just jealous or are you merely a hypocrite?

137 runs - mathematically, boys have to make sure that we don’t lose by 137 runs against Afghans to make the 1st cut.

Hopefully we will beat Afghanistan too. I am sure we will start favourites against them.

Change of formats and momentum for us

I think this is teh first time a BD player has outscored the entire opposition (Mushfiq 144, Sri Lanka 124).

Its happened to us many a time.

Quit being salty bro. You wanted BD to lose, they didn't, you'll get your chance again. Its not like BD won't ever lose another match. No need to lose your will to live.

I could make the reverse argument, if T20s are such a standard of performance why aren't the T20 champs West Indies a decent team in ODIs or Tests?

If I didn't mention it, ODIs still incorporate many if not most of traditional skills in cricket. Building an innings, seeing out difficult periods, bowlers having to be patient and come up with a plan B, etc. None of that exists in T20s, or even if it does, in vastly reduced quantities.

What? I only had issues with you calling t20 as fun cricket. Please dont try to put words in my mouths. Its silly.

You cannot use such a reverse argument because if you have bothered reading my posts, i never claimed such stuff. I never claimed t20I as some benchmark. I claimed that each and every format is important and has value and no one can undermine any of the format just because their own team is rubbish at it.

I would suggest reading my posts related to this topic again before accusing me with stuff i have not even claimed.

When the side is 3-4 down inside 10 overs spinners look good more offen then not as its rare batsmen will take risk against them.

I mean technically BD was 3 down too within 2 overs. So not sure what that means. SL just played crappy cricket today.

Sabash Bangladesh :)

Another one over Hathuri..

I said it yesterday on some utube channel. Lanka will find it hard to get 150..

For a second I thought game was still ongoing as title wasn't changed. Couldn't watch as no one showing it but that's poor from SL to lose like this to Bangladesh. If they beat Afghanistan and Afghanistan beat Bangladesh it could come down to NRR

Lol mate their first overseas win was in Pakistan, now get over it and don't bring India here.

So minnows' first series win away from home was In Pakistan, first test win against Pak, so y r u discussing India here when during same time they did something amazing Pak.

The thing is 1998-2001 was Zim's good time and they weren't really minnows as such during then and had some very good players from Heath Streak,Flower Brothers.

I must say though. I have rarely been a non-minnow team bat as poorly as SL did today.

As good as Rahim's innings was, SL basically gift-wrapped this match to BAN with their abysmal batting and catching.

Don't forget abysmal SL bowling, grandaddy Malinga aside. BD bowlers didn't need to rely on fielders, so thats not an excuse for SL. Bangladesh just outplayed SL in all 3 departments. As most BD and neutral observers would have expected.

Top quality inning by Rahim. Didn't knew Asia cup had started. Good start for BD.

No. Don't want to take anything away from Bangladesh or Rahim. They played very well.

But still, that was poor batting from SL. Looked like they were playing a T20, not 50 over cricket.

Asia Cup 2018: Watching Tamim bat with broken wrist spurred Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim was the architect of Bangladesh’s only seventh win against Sri Lanka in 45 ODIs as they began their Asia Cup 2018 campaign in style with an all-round show in the tournament opener on Saturday. Mushfiqur recorded his sixth ODI century and by the time he walked back as the final Bangladesh wicket to fall, he had scored 144 – his highest score in the format.

That the 31-year-old Mushfiqur was able to surpass his previous best of 117 was thanks, in part, to Tamim Iqbal who suffered a fractured wrist having copped a blow earlier in the Bangladesh innings that rendered him unfit to bat. He retired hurt on two.

However, when Mustafizur was run out leaving Bangladesh nine wickets down, effectively all out, out came Tamim with a heavily strapped left hand. He took guard to face the final delivery of the 47th over and bizarrely, batted with just one hand.

Watching his teammate inspired Mushfiqur as he clobbered 32 runs off 14 deliveries to push Bangladesh to 262 before holing out off the third delivery of the final over.

“Thanks to almighty for giving me strength,” Mushfiqur said at the post-match presentation. “We need to win both our games to qualify for the next round. Mithun plays really well and I knew it was easy to bat and I took my chances.”

He further added, “When I saw Tamim walk out to bat I knew I had to do something for him and for my country. It’s difficult to concentrate each and every ball. I thought I’ve been in great nick in the last one year and I was determined to score big runs in this tournament. I’m really happy that I’m able to contribute to my team’s win.”

Sri Lanka’s chase never took off as they kept losing wickets regularly. They were bowled out for just 124 in 35.2 overs as Bangladesh won by 137 runs – their first ODI win in UAE.

Why not the best????
So who is no. 1 India?

Congrats BD well played. Top knock from Mushfiq and gutsy stuff from Tamim as well. As for our lot no direction or game plan with the bat and ball, no passion or fight and of course rubbish fielding. Just the usual stuff absolutely pathetic.
