DHAKA: Bangladesh axed six players from national contracts after a year of poor performances with players who escaped the chop being denied a pay rise, an official said Thursday.

Opening batsmen Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes were among the six to miss out on a contract as Bangladesh cricket warned players to shape up, selector Habibul Bashar said.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board late Wednesday decided to retain just 10 players on contract, with three others to be added at a later time.

“For contracts, we mostly preferred players who would perform regularly over the next one year,” Bashar told AFP.

“Some players have lost their regular spot in the team. They needed to be sent a message. Getting dropped does not mean the door is closed for them. Everyone will get a fair chance in future.”

Mosaddek Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Taskin Ahmed and Kamrul Islam Rabbi were the four others whose contracts were not renewed. Sabbir was already excluded from a contract on disciplinary grounds.

Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mominul Haque, Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan were the 10 players awarded contracts.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan told reporters that contracted players would not be given a pay rise this year.

The top remunerated players — Shakib, Mushfiqur and Mortaza — are paid 420,000 taka ($5,121) per month from the board.

The board also said it would review contracts for around 80 first-class players.

Bangladesh lost Test series against New Zealand, India and South Africa in 2017, and just managed to scrape a draw against Sri Lanka and Australia.

Their limited-overs side made the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy in the UK but were drubbed in all but four of their 14 one-day international matches. Bangladesh won just one of seven Twenty20 internationals over the same year.

Why? It's really difficult to figure out what it itching you for the laugh? Is it for the amount paid or for not considering under performers from a secured annual payment?

Actually BCB's payment model is a bit different - it brings about 100 FC cricketers in Central contract, therefore these players has another contract from their FC teams. Besides, players get hefty payment from Dhaka League (top players earn over $50K in 2 months) and match fee. And, players get a % from annual net income & endorsements. At the end over 100 pro cricketers earn guaranteed $25K+/year from BCB's central contract + match fees and club contracts, and side game, personal endorsements. Not comparable to highest payers in global standard, but compared to other sports in BD, quite good.

looks more equitable distribution

This is good. Basically giving a message that non performers won't be tolerated. Much better than India and Pakistan bringing TTFs again and again.

But national teamers hardly play any FC cricket. I doubt Shakib has even played 10 domestic FC matches in the last 10 years. The only guys playing are Mominul, Mushfiq, Mosaddek, and other youngsters.

Top BD players make 55-60K a year retainer (Mushy, Shakib, Tamim, Mashrafee, Riyad).
They get another 4000 per Test so about 20-25K per year.
2500 per ODI so around 30K there.
2000 per T20 so around 10K there.
So total about 100-120K for national duties if they don't get injured.

DPL and BPL each pay around 50K. So thats a total of 200K per year. Shakib, Tamim, Mustafiz make a bit more playing in IPL, PSL, CPL.

But Test specialists like Mominul only make about 100K all total. By comparison to other professions in Bangladesh, thats a good income still. But less than what even top ZIM players get (in theory).

They are paid lot from side tournaments in other cities - 3 games for $2K in week end + "fringe" benefits. Also, Central contract (for FC level), is a secured payment for registering with the team, match fees are paid on appearance/availability basis. And, you are missing the endorsement part.

At the age of 23-25, if a young man is guaranteed for $100K/year for next 10-12 years + his travel allowance, practice facilities & kits, medical fees, life insurance are covered by BCB/clubs (& I believe national players get a pension as well) - unless he blows it for "pleasure", it's damn good money for a life time. Players are earning at the start of their career as well, which can be invested when money inflow isn't an issue.

ZIM is going through hyper inflation, therefore it's difficult to compare.

$60000 USD for a top gun international player on central contract from National Cricket Board? How about $100000 for a dropped side line mediocre T20 player for 10 domestic matches in a second tier league (Kamran Akmal)?

It can happen actually, if that national cricket board is of a beggar country and that T20 league is from a raja maharaja country with booming economy and lots of reserves to spree ....

That's much better and informative. Thanks

Man, our players get paid peanuts!

I make as much as these guys (central contract value only) and I am just a senior teacher.

60K USD goes a long way in BD than in US..

It appears they make much more than that. True, 60k USD goes a long way but isn't it what an above average business man makes in a year? How about Tech Managers and directors etc. Only 10 out of millions make the national cricket contract. Considering that, they should make a lot more than above average folk. Looks like they do.

You make $60,000+ as a teacher in BD? That is much more than teachers in, for example India make.

But do you have your students photoshopping a picture of you holding the severed head of a rival teacher? :batman:

It all depends on the economy of a country as well as on the performance. I think Bangladeshi players are getting what they deserve, with best of them, viz Shakib al Hasan and Fizz, being rewarded with IPL contracts etc. Ultimately, it is case of merit being recognised and undeserving getting the boot. Fair enough.

The top 5 (out of 10) contracted players makes around 200K USD per year. I don't know how much their various endorsements are. Maybe for Shakib/Tamim another 100K. Is that too high of an estimate??? I don't know.

But the average BD player like Mominul makes half that at best. A young player like Mosaddek who has now lost his contract will make maybe 20K. Thats a meagre amount. The BCB should have kept the central contracts to 15. They don't have to pay everyone a massive salary. Luckily, a guy like Mosaddek can still earn enough of a living to keep playing after losing his contract.

60.000USD is a lot of money in BD and PAK for example. Upon this the players earn also in match fees, allowances and T20 leauge etc.

these are 3rd world countries where majority cant even have the basics need covered. so that amount in HUGE!
