ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has revealed that not only Pakistan but Bangladesh is also quite worried about Muslims in India who have been discriminated against under the recent amendment made in the Citizenship Act, 1955.

“I have talked to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed who is worried about the fate of Muslims in the Indian state of Bihar and feared influx of migrants to her country,” the president said during a meeting with a Saudi parliamentary delegation led by Chairman of the Shura Council Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al-Sheikh at the Presidency on Friday.

Press secretary to the president Mian Jehangir Iqbal told Dawn that Dr Alvi talked to Hasina Wajed during a recent conference in Baku where she expressed concern over amendments made in India’s Citizenship Act.

A source who attended the meeting said Mr Alvi was of the view that under the amended bill, Muslims in India have to present evidence of properties of their grandfathers to retain their citizenship.

The source quoted the president as saying: “Prime Minister Hasina Wajed feared that if any action is taken against Muslims of Bihar by the Indian government, they [Muslim if Bihar] will try to migrate to Bangladesh.”

According to an official press release, the president said Saudi Arabia has always played a proactive role in the challenges faced by the Ummah and urged the Kingdom to highlight the conspiracy being hatched against Muslims of India.

It has been reported that the Indian cabinet signed off on Dec 4 on a legislation that will give citizenship to certain religious minorities, excluding Muslims. The amended bill has provisions to determine various kinds of citizenship, including that by birth, by registration, by naturalisation or by descent. The bill, if passed, would change a key part in the category for illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan — Muslim-majority states that were once part of the undivided India as defined in the Government of India Act, 1935.

It was revealed in the meeting that Saudi authorities were eager to hold a conference of Muslim countries on the miseries of Kashmiris who have been under curfew for over four months.

The Shura Council chairman reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support to Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir, the press release said.

PM meets Saudi delegation

In a separate meeting with the Saudi delegation, Prime Minister Imran Khan lauded the growing cooperation between the parliaments of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He apprised the Shura Council chairman of the dire human rights and humanitarian situation in India-held Kashmir marked by the inhuman lockdown and communications blockade, which had continued since Aug 5. “The world must take cognizance of India’s egregious violations of human rights in Occupied Kashmir, make all possible efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the Kashmiri people, and facilitate a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions,” he added.

Bangladesh and Bangladeshis aren't as fanatic about being the watchmen of the global Muslim populace, but maybe Mr. President has access to some information that we don't.

All South Asian countries should first and foremost be concerned about treatment of minorities in their own backyard, not a single country is doing a good job at that, some fare worse than others but all are pathetic. We are worse than some of the West Asian and African countries in turmoil yet want to preach to others.

Are you talking about Bangladeshis or their govt? Bangladeshi people in general, especially the ones in America are very religious, I know many in the Muslim community that are actively involved in activism for Palestine, Kashmir and the Uighurs.

Difference that I’ve notices, only RSS/BJP supporters/members defend policies and crimes committed by RSS/BJP.

Exactly!

Islam describes 3 levels of Eeman(faith) :

Highest - If you see injustice change it with your hands ( physically)

Medium - Change it with your tongue ( say something against it )

Weakest - Change it with your heart ( Consider it wrong in your heart )

Why not speak up about justice in your country as well as other countries. We are all humans first , lets show some humanity .

Indian Muslims are Indians. Their forefathers decided to choose India as their country back in 1947.

Whatever their problems are, we don't have to put our nose in their business. Instead, our government should try and give more rights to Pakistani Hindus, Christians, Sikhs...

I can understand Pakistan's stance when it comes to Kashmir as it is a disputed territory, or when it comes to Palestine as well, but it's nothing less than shameful when I see our officials speaking about the state of Indian Muslims. They are not Pakistanis, they do not hold any special feeling towards Pakistan, and whatever their state does with them, it should not matter to us.

Well said. Dont know whats this obsession with state of Muslims in India ( except Kashmir ).

Think it's fine for Pakistan to be worried about Muslims around the world.

With all due respect Bangladesh Government doesn't seem to give two hoots about muslims, especially in Kashmir and in india in general.

Think it's fine for Pakistan to be worried about Muslims around the world.

Does the world think its fine? Do non pakistani muslims think its fine that foreigners meddle in the matters of their country?

We British consider it our duty to care about the rest of the world. It's a basic concern for humanity. Do you think that is wrong?

Focus on getting to a stage where you needn't continually flash your passport online to underline your identity, and that alone is a start. Palestine, Ghana and San Salvador can come later.

There’s nothing wrong in showing concern for humanity. It’s same as we Americans go around the world to spread democracy and free humanity from regimes that uses religion to oppress it’s population.

I was just reminding your Indian compatriot that showing leadership and concern for what goes on in other countries is something that we British pride ourselves on. An important point that needed to be made for those who don't understand that we all live in the same world.

You asked "Does the world think its fine? Do non pakistani muslims think its fine that foreigners meddle in the matters of their country?-"

I gave the example of how the world - or more specifically we British - definitely do meddle in the affairs of other countries. Can you deny it?

I asked pakistan, not british. Thread is about pakistan president.

Secondly the british govt has not made this statement. Hence this has nothing to do with brits.

As and when the British government makes a statement about Indian citizenship bill or NRC, we will see.

If you want to talk about Pakistan then talk only about Pakistan. When you start comparing to the rest of the world then I am going to do exactly that. Do you understand this? Don't backtrack or try to deflect, this is your question that I am answering. You want to compare with the world, well here I am giving you Britain as an example. Have you got it now?

If someone is being killed etc - it doesnt matter who or what intervenes

If someone is being killed etc - it doesnt matter who or what intervenes

If there is a ongoing fight, the two parties may or maynot like intervention.

The world today is proof of how outside intervention shouldnot happen and people should be left to find their own solutions within their situation and means.

That creates a natural equilibrium and not an artificial one.

There is a reason the concept of nation states was designed.

I don't know why some of my fellow Bangladeshi countrymen went to India illegally. If India want to punish them, not much anyone can do.

People need to make better decisions to avoid these unpleasant situations. I am against all illegal immigration.

Able-bodied healthy men shouldn't migrate illegally.
