DHAKA: Bangladesh’s cricket authorities on Saturday partially lifted the ban on former captain Mohammad Ashraful, allowing him to play in selected domestic competitions, officials said.

Ashraful was initially banned for eight years in 2014 after he tearfully confessed on national television to helping fix matches in the scandal-hit Bangladesh Premier League.

The Twenty20 tournament was eventually left suspended in the wake of the match-fixing controversy before resuming in 2015 with six new franchises.

A local appeal panel in September 2014 cut Ashraful’s ban to five years including a two-year suspended sentence, meaning he can return to competitive cricket from August 2016.

The Bangladesh cricket Board and the International cricket Council had lodged an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland against his reduced ban in October 2014, but later withdrew it.

“Mr Ashraful is eligible to play domestic cricket from the 13th August 2016. However, he will be ineligible to play international cricket or the BPL (until 2018),” said Yasin Patel, a British lawyer who represented Ashraful during the trial. BCB chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury said they were now waiting for an ICC response to determine which domestic competitions Ashraful will be allowed to play.

Don't think he could make it to XI ever as despite being very talented his fc and international are below par average...and many players now have much better records than him to compete for the place and also very young than him...unless he does some very good performance in the domestic circuit in the next two years I don't see him make it to international again...good luck to bd's first ever star...

Ashraful_Rox you haven't posted in this thread? Why :( He's Back! iA his second run is better then his first

Mediocre cricket with all the potential in the world.

He was your most talented batsman ever imo I will never forget his hundred in cardiff vs AUS, watched it live. No one mediocre plays an inning of that magnitude against a world class bowling attack but I guess his potential was wasted. He needs to work harder and develop a world class temperament, hopefully he returns better then ever

He had exceptional talent but he used to to great effect in finding the fielders. He was a prodigy, at at the age of 17 he had skills most 27 year old's didn't have.

He needs to work hard

I also don't think he deal with the adulation at such a young age, all eyes were on him, journalists were writing about him and in a short space of time he had become a little bit of a superstar after some high profile impact performances. His stats are absolutely disgraceful, you'd never think they would be that bad! I'd have laughed if you said so in 2005! The other thing is he didn't play in a team which is as successful as the current one and he didn't have the luxury of thriving in the current system imo so it all affects your mentality, he lacked the intent and fighting spirit, desire diminishes a little when you continuously lose and if affects your overall performances to.

Was one of the greatest talent but wasted by himself...hard to be fit in this team...lets see how he can push himself in the team by great domestic performance..

Ashraful can play domestic cricket now but he will be eligible for international cricket in 2018, is there a way back for him into the international team? MMHS

Don't think so. He has been given a life line to earn some money from League cricket; but unofficially his career for BD is finished. Also, he is close to 35 now.

Seriously?? Is he really that old? 😵

Ashraful is one and only classical batsman which BD ever produced. It was lovely to watch his cricket shot. Very stylish.

bring him back asap. he's still all class but for a minor mistake almost half a decade ago

Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful is targeting an international return after the end of a five-year ban for match-fixing.

The 34-year-old was suspended for eight years in 2014 for fixing matches in the 2013 Bangladesh Twenty20 Premier League but this was reduced to five on appeal.

"I'm feeling nice as I was waiting for this day," Ashraful told AFP.

"[I told myself] when August 13, 2018 came I would be available for national team again."

Ashraful became his country's youngest Test centurion in 2001 at the age of 17, and has played 23 Twenty20 internationals, 61 Tests, and 177 one-day internationals, including captaining his side between 2007 and 2009.

He has been able to play in domestic first-class and List A cricket in his homeland after the Bangladesh Cricket Board partially lifted his ban in 2016.

However, he remained suspended from international and franchise-based T20 cricket.

"Over the last five years I never felt I wouldn't be able to come back. I never lacked this confidence. I always felt I would come back," he said.

Bangladesh chief selector Minhajul Abedin has said that Ashraful must prove his form and fitness if he wants to get back into the national team.

"Of course it will be tough to get a chance in the Bangladesh team," added Ashraful.

"Still I think if I can perform. There is plenty of room for me to serve Bangladesh team. This is what I believe."
