DHAKA: Bangladesh police said Monday they would deport five Indians caught betting at a weekend cricket match as authorities crack down on illegal bookmaking in the lucrative domestic league.

The men were detained Saturday at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium during the one-day Bangladesh Premier League match, police said.

They were caught by cricket officials concerned about match-fixing and illegal gambling in the hugely popular league. “We have handed them over to police as this is the most we could do.
They will take further action,” said cricket board spokesman Jalal Yunus. Two of the accused were previously caught betting during Bangladesh’s home series against England in October last year, he added.

Authorities were “in the process of deporting them to India”, said local police head Nazrul Islam. Gambling is illegal in Bangladesh but the cricket league has been dogged by betting scandals and its first two editions were marred by a match-fixing controversy. involving players and team owners.

Bangladesh tackles illegal cricket betting with stadium raids

Last week nearly 80 spectators at two cricket grounds were thrown out on suspicion of betting. The alleged offenders — including 10 Indians — used mobile phones to place live bets before scores were broadcast on television and online.

A leading newspaper reported last week that betting on domestic cricket was rampant, with tea stalls, restaurants and rickshaw garages doubling as venues to place bets.

The cricket board searches stadiums to catch gamblers but that has not stamped out the practice. Last year the country’s communications regulator blocked a dozen gaming websites in a bid to curb betting on cricket.

Nearly 50 foreign cricketers, including Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, the West Indies’ Chris Gayle, New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum and England’s Jos Buttler, are competing in the seven-team BPL tournament this year.

These leagues are always under a cloud. Really tough job for the Boards to keep these tournaments clean.

Just to clarify what these people are doing does not damage the game.

They are just gaining an advantage against other betters by betting first by beating transmission delay.

It's a crime in Bangladesh, but that's only because betting itself is illegal. If done elsewhere, this isn't even a crime.

And needless to say these people don't really care what happens in the game. They will just make a profit because they see it happening first.

It's not fixing or spot fixing, just betting.so,just relax. Being betting illegal in bd,they were arrested. This BPL is clean till now on fixing issue. It's appreciable that BCB keeping eye on every thing this time.

Bangladesh to try cricket gamblers in special courts

Bangladesh will set up special courts at its cricket stadiums to try and convict any punters caught gambling during an upcoming international series, an official said Monday.

Gamblers caught during the tri-nation series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe — starting January 15 — would be hauled from the stands and tried on the spot by judges in temporary courtrooms, a cricket board official said.

“Betting will be treated as a public nuisance. Anyone found involved will be convicted and punished instantly in the stadium,” Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury told AFP.

The special courts will continue to target gamblers during Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh, which starts at the end of January after the tri-nation series.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will play two Test matches and two Twenty20 internationals.

Gambling is illegal but rampant during cricket matches in Bangladesh, where punters exploit a brief delay between live play and the official broadcast of results to place frantic bets.

Authorities threw nearly 80 spectators out of matches for placing bets using their mobile phones during the latest edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, which concluded last month. At least a dozen of them were foreigners.

Police in November deported at least five Indians caught gambling during these short format matches.

So-called “mobile courts” are popular in Bangladesh. In October, more than 200 people accused of abuses against Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh's southeast were jailed by special courts there.

Need "dholai", more than mobile court - grab couple of those red handed, then give a "gono", and post it in social media. It's like scare crow treatment.

Sadistic, but much more effective - these crook'll serve for 3 months at max (probably not even that if they can crack a "deal"), then will go to same route, every time; but if a player is caught, his career is ruined like Sharjeel or Ashraful, which I don't think fair - these crooks need some permanent damage as well - eye, hand, leg, kidney ....... wou chiz, I don't mind.
