Neil Broom returns for ANZ ODI series

Otago Volts batsman Neil Broom has been named in the BLACKCAPS 13-player ODI squad for the ANZ ODI series against Bangladesh.

Having last played an ODI in 2010, Broom will have the opportunity to add to his 22 matches to date when the series begins on Boxing Day in Christchurch.

Luke Ronchi also returns to the squad, with BJ Watling, Henry Nicholls and Todd Astle the omissions from the recent Chappell-Hadlee tour.

BLACKCAPS Squad for ANZ ODI Series v Bangladesh

  • Kane Williamson (c)
  • Trent Boult
  • Neil Broom
  • Lockie Ferguson
  • Colin de Grandhomme
  • Martin Guptill
  • Matt Henry
  • Tom Latham
  • Colin Munro
  • James Neesham
  • Luke Ronchi
  • Mitchell Santner
  • Tim Southee
Having played for Derbyshire last season, Broom has opted to forgo the second year of his County contract to allow him the opportunity to play for the BLACKCAPS again.

“I appreciate everything Derbyshire have done for me and have really enjoyed my time with the club,” said Broom.

"At the end of the day I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to represent New Zealand and am excited about the opportunity to play international cricket again. It’s the ultimate."

BLACKCAPS Selector Gavin Larsen said both Broom and Ronchi brought a lot to the squad.

“With 12 years of domestic cricket under his belt and having previously spent time in the BLACKCAPS squad, Neil brings a lot of experience to the group," said Larsen.

“Neil was the top run-scorer in the Ford Trophy competition last year, with an average of 84.66. He has an impressive strike-rate and obviously fills the number four role with Ross out injured.”

“It’s been pleasing to see Luke scoring runs for Wellington again and he returns as one one of the most experienced members of the squad. At this stage we see him as the best ODI gloveman in the country and the leadership he brings to the group is also immensely valuable."

Larsen conceded the team was in a rebuilding stage.

“There's six players in this side from the squad of 15 who featured for us in the world cup last year, so it’s important we give the new players the opportunity to feel comfortable on the international stage.

“That takes time. You can’t replace 900 ODI caps and the leadership that comes with that experience overnight, but it’s an exciting new group and we’re learning a lot with each match that is played.

"Although the side is rebuilding it's very important that we do see improvements during the home summer."

The team come into camp on 23-24 December in Christchurch.

The ODIs and T20Is will be really interesting if you ask me.

I would say Bangladesh have a decent pace attack - Fizz, Taskin, Mash, Rubel and spin attack is excellent: Shakib, Taijul(won't be picked though), Miraz

Our real concern is how we deal with swing. Our players barely face swing in the SC. This is our first assignment outside the SC in 20 months.

not strong overrated side which will get phainty from wounded nz team

First match in alien conditions in almost 2 years obviously we will struggle.

Before the 2015 WC we lost all our practice games including losing to Ireland but did well in the tournament.

This will be a big struggle for us anyways. Obviously not our fault that we don't get to play abroad too much. But expecting haters to come out of their dens and call our team overrated and home track bullies.

We have shown progress at home because we had the opportunity. Now we can only perform abroad if we get to play more and more. After NZ tour we have tour to Sri Lanka, tri series in Ireland, champions trophy and finally tour to South Africa.

What I must ask is that fans, Bangladeshi or not need to understand that results won't come all of a sudden. NZ failed to win any ODI in Bangladesh in the last 7 encounters. Now that is a better team who regularly played in subcontinental conditions and even in IPL. Bangladesh teams in those times were rather ordinary as well unlike these days.

Trust me even a strong Pakistan side is struggling to perform abroad lately despite getting accustomed to the conditions extremely well.

And this is our first bilateral tour to a pace friendly conditions after some 6.5 years(discounting Ireland and Zimbabwe) Your heard that right. We toured west indies but it's more spin friendly thee days.

Why you are so thin skinned? If you really feel the urgency to respond, instead of this long story, just post the score links of PAK's 2 practice matches from last years NZ tour; or NZ's practice match in recent IND tour - posters are educated enough to click respective players' profile of the host teams. Sometimes, you need to do things appropriately to shorten altercation.

should be a good series. BD making first steps outside subcontinent as a team with some pedigree. I'm afraid it might be the same as SL, PAK and SL (then and even now you could say)- they will get a hiding. they will learn a lot though.

IF BD wins/ draw the series, would they be considered better than team Pakistan?

That's a good question and pls ask it to all Pak ppers most of whom always says about Bangladesh's loosing facts (they are overrated etc, they are shown right place etc etc etc) but they never say about bd's winning facts (if they win they will be considered as good team, they are better than that team etc etc). Pak ppers ,will you say something like that?

Going to be a clean sweep for NZ team, I don't think BD have had experience of playing in small grounds, NZ going to make merry; Bang fielding also has to be on spot if they want to have a chance

And Pakistan fans can post the scorecard of Bangladesh losses to Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

I won't have done so, then BD posters will post the Harare Test score card, not 2013 only, from 1994 as well.

You missed the moral of the story - only fools try to get under skin with the scores of a practice matches.

Revenge time for NZ. Expecting a green mamba for all those white washing the Bengalis gave NZ.

At the end of the day we are fans from the wrong side of the border as people here say, whenever we have achieved something it will be downplayed whereas our failures will be observed with a microscope.

Personally I don't get motivated to defend my team all the time but have not been to PP too often lately so wanted to share my 2 cents.

Reading a book called "7 habits of highly effective people" by Stephen Covey. Brilliant book and one where the importance of long term development is highlighted. A good reason why cricket is taking a downward spiral is because the adminstrators are too busy with milking everything out of cricket in the "now" rather than creating a sustainable environment for this sport which will keep on churning out exceptional players and fans will flock to the stadium. Why else do we see associates being ousted from ICC events, bilateral series that last for months and goes to a point where it becomes too monotonous.

The same applies to cricket fans. Everyone here wants the "now" but are not thinking long term. One needs to be patient with these players. We will eventually get better over the years if we start plaing regularly abroad

The great English side at full strength lost 4-0 to India, and mind you 2 of them were innings defeat. Bangladesh losing 2-0 to NZ won't be a shock or disgrace by any means infact.

Your defeats where in the last year or so. Not over 20 years ago like ours.

http://tribune.com.pk/story/1273748/boult-southee-managed-bangladesh-series/

CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand’s frontline seamers Trent Boult and Tim Southee will have their workloads managed through the limited-overs portion of their series against Bangladesh to ensure they are fresh for the rest of the international programme, said coach Mike Hesson.

New Zealand begin a three-match one-day series against Bangladesh in Christchurch on Monday, before they play three T20Is ahead of two Tests.

Boult will not play the final one-day match in Nelson on December 31 and miss at least the first T20 match in Napier on January 3, while Southee will miss the entire T20 series ahead of the first Test in Wellington that starts on January 12.

“It’s always a balancing act with guys that play all three forms, especially the bowlers,” Hesson told reporters in Christchurch on Saturday. “We’ll give them a chance to get their loads up so they’re ready to go for the Test match.”

Both played domestic limited overs cricket upon New Zealand’s return from Australia, where they were thumped 3-0 in their Chappell-Hadlee one day series against Steve Smith’s side.

Most of the team had returned to their domestic sides since, with Boult, Southee and spinner Mitchell Santner all playing on Friday in Hamilton before joining the national side.

Tom Latham, Matt Henry, Neil Broom and Jimmy Neesham all played for their respective teams in a T20 match in Christchurch on Friday.

“I think it’s been good the guys have had 10-12 days home playing some domestic cricket,” Hesson said. “They’re getting some confidence back.”

Captain Kane Williamson, however, had not played any cricket at all with the coach restricting all contact with the 26-year-old. “It’s been nice to be able to give him a break, it’s a tough ask playing all three forms of the game and you’re captain as well. I’ve left him alone to be fair to enjoy his break rather than getting annoying phone calls from me all the time.”

New Zealand host Australia for three one-day matches after the Bangladesh series before South Africa arrive for a full tour that includes a T20I, five one-day matches and three Tests.

Bangladesh will be eying the opportunity to consolidate its position in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings when it takes on New Zealand in an upcoming three-match series starting in Christchurch on Monday.

Bangladesh can stretch its lead over Pakistan and the West Indies with a series win and it only needs to avoid being blanked 3-0 so as not to drop points in the team rankings which will determine the automatic qualifiers for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Bangladesh is currently ranked seventh with 95 points, ahead of Pakistan (89) and the West Indies (87) as teams look to garner important points since host England and seven other highest-ranked sides as on 30 September 2017 will qualify directly for the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over tournament.

New Zealand, which lost 3-0 to Australia in the recent Chappell-Hadlee series, will drop one place in the rankings with a series loss by any margin while Bangladesh will remain in seventh position irrespective of any result.

Possible scenarios:
· If New Zealand wins 3-0: New Zealand 111 points; Bangladesh 91 points
· If New Zealand wins 2-1: New Zealand 109 points, Bangladesh 95 points
· If Bangladesh wins 3-0: New Zealand 105 points, Bangladesh 100 points
· If Bangladesh wins 2-1: New Zealand 107 points (behind England on decimal points), Bangladesh 97 points

The ODI team rankings, unlike the Test rankings, are updated after each match. The ODI team rankings are availablehere, while the ICC ODI predictor function is available here.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for ODI Batsmen, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will be top-ranked from either side in fifth position with Martin Guptill following him in sixth position. For Bangladesh, Mushfiqur Rahim will be the best-ranked batsman in 18th position and hoping to move up the rankings table.

New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult is top-ranked in the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for ODI Bowlers with Matt Henry in seventh position. Bangladesh also has two players in the top 10 with left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan in fifth position and Mashrafe Mortaza placed 10th.

Shakib is the top-ranked all-rounder in this format.

MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings (as on 24 December, before the New Zealand-Bangladesh series):

Rank Team Points
1 Australia 120
2 South Africa 116
3 India 111
4 New Zealand 109
5 England 107
6 Sri Lanka 101
7 Bangladesh 95
8 Pakistan 89
9 West Indies 86
10 Afghanistan 52
11 Zimbabwe 48
12 Ireland 42

It should have been 7 match ODI series - a 7-0 should have taken us in top 4, where the team should be. For the time being, I am happy if it's 2-1 ................................... or may be 1-2:)

NZ to be more aggressive against Bangladesh

A thrashing at the hands of Australia had been a salutary lesson for New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and his side would be far more aggressive when their one-day series starts against a confident Bangladesh team on Monday.

Williamson's team had journeyed across the Tasman having beaten Pakistan in two tests and confident they could beat a shell-shocked Australian side who had been humiliated by South Africa and overhauled by the selectors.

Instead, Australia hammered New Zealand 3-0 with an aggressive style of play with Williamson's team failing to capitalise on the few opportunities they did have in the series.

"Hess (coach Mike Hesson) and I have spoken a bit about that series," Williamson told reporters in Christchurch on Sunday ahead of their first game against Bangladesh.

"I suppose when you go away on a tour and get beaten like we did in Aussie there's a number of things you would have liked to have done a little bit better. It's important we learn from it and become a better side going forward."

Williamson said his side would be more aggressive than they were in Australia, with the team's pace bowlers to be asked to put pressure on the Bangladesh batsmen.

The only selection issue at Hagley Oval appeared to be over the balance of the quicks, with rookie Lochie Ferguson and Matt Henry likely to be the toss-up for the third seamer role on Monday.

"With the depth in the pace department it is something we're looking at," Williamson said of the makeup of the side. "It's more the balance of the pace bowlers that we're trying to get right."

New Zealand won the last match between the two sides, at Seddon Park in the pool phase at last year's World Cup.

Prior to that narrow three-wicket victory, however, they had lost their previous seven completed fixtures against Mashrafe Mortaza's side, albeit all of those games were in Bangladesh.

"At home they're extremely tough to beat," said Williamson, who was mindful Bangladesh in October had recorded their first test victory over England.

"They've turned over nearly everyone in their home conditions and are getting more experienced around the world.

"They have been getting better and better every year. We will need to play our best cricket."

It should be a good series. Even if Bangladesh manages to win one match they should be considered an overall better team than New Zealand as New Zealand lost their last seven matches in a row against BD in BD and that too before Bangladesh started being recognised as a strong ODI side.

I hope The Fizz can make his return to cricket tonight.

Ban vs NZ: Bangladesh is likely to make three changes in the squad in second ODI of the series

Bangladesh speedster Mustafizur Rahman may sit out the second game of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Team sources have said the pacer might be rested for the Thursday's game as per the suggestions of the physio.
Fast bowler Shuvashish Roy is likely to be handed a debut while out-of-form Soumya Sarkar may be replaced by leg spinner Tanvir Haider, who is also dreaming of his first ODI appearance.
"If a player fails to perform consistently, we have to look for alternative," coach Chandika Hathurusingha said at the press conference.
A hamstring injury will keep wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim out of the remaining two ODIs and the T20s and he is set to be replaced by Nurul Hasan. The latter has played six T20s for the national team, but it will be his maiden ODI.

OUT:
Mushfiq (injury)
Mustafiz ( rest for recovery)
Somya ( out of form)

IN:
Nurul hasan (wk)
Shuvashish Roy (pace)
Tanvir hayder ( legspin AR)

Guptill ruled out | Broom joins NZ T20 squad

BLACKCAPS opener Martin Guptill has been ruled out of the upcoming ANZ Twenty20 series against Bangladesh with a grade one left hamstring strain.

Guptill will require two to four weeks to fully recover, after sustaining the injury while running between the wickets in the third ODI at Saxton Oval in Nelson on Saturday.

Coach Mike Hesson confirmed Guptill would return home to recover with an eye to later returning to the Ford Trophy for some games prior to the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series starting January 30.

“Martin’s obviously a key player for us with the white ball so to lose him is disappointing,” Hesson said.

“We’re confident with some rest, followed by a couple of domestic games, he’ll be ready to play a big role against Australia at the end of January.”

Guptill’s spot in the Twenty20 squad will be taken by Otago top order batsman Neil Broom.

“We needed to replace an attacking opening batsmen and with Neil’s experience opening in the T20 format and his current form - he was a ready-made replacement.

“Martin also leads our fielding in white ball cricket and so we’re expecting Neil to be a big contributor in that area as well.”

The BLACKCAPS travel to Napier tomorrow to prepare for the three game ANZ Twenty20 series against Bangladesh starting on Tuesday at McLean Park.

Bangladesh Cricket Board announces the squad for the 2nd (06 January) and 3rd (08 January) T20 Internationals against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui:

Squad for 2nd &3rd T20 Internationals

Masrafe Bin Mortaza (Captain), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Soumya Sarker, Shabbir Rahaman, Mahmudullah, Shakib Al Hasan (Vice Captain), Mosaddek Hossain Saikot, Rubel Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shuvagata Hom, Shubashis Roy, Taijul Islam, Nurul Hasan Sohan

The BLACKCAPS have named their 13-man squad for the upcoming ANZ Test Series against Bangladesh.

BLACKCAPS squad for ANZ Test series

Kane Williamson (c)
Trent Boult
Dean Brownlie
Colin de Grandhomme
Matt Henry
Tom Latham
Henry Nicholls
Jeet Raval
Mitchell Santner
Tim Southee
Ross Taylor
Neil Wagner
BJ Watling (wk)

There’s a familiar look to the squad, with 12 of the 13 players having featured in the recent Test series victory over Pakistan.

After undergoing surgery in December to remove a growth on his eye, Ross Taylor returns to the international fold, following a successful return to cricket for the Central Stags in the McDonald’s Super Smash.

Selector Gavin Larsen welcomed the 32-year-old’s return to the side.

“It’s great to have Ross back. He has a phenomenal record that speaks for itself and he’s coming off a terrific hundred in his last Test.

“He’s obviously been an essential part of our Test side for a long time and brings invaluable experience and knowledge to the group.”

Henry Nicholls will continue to stake his claim for the number five spot, while Colin de Grandhomme and Jeet Raval have the chance to build on their promising debut series.

“We’ve still got some relatively new players in the squad and playing in home conditions gives them a great opportunity to further their experience on the international stage,” Larsen said.

Mitchell Santner is the sole spin option, with Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Matt Henry set to vie for the seamers spots.

Dean Brownlie will once again provide batting cover, after being called in for the second Test against Pakistan.

why don't kiwis play a bowler like Scott Kuggeleijn? in place of henry? Scott did looked fast..

Ronchi ruled out | Blundell called into squad

Luke Ronchi has been ruled out of Sunday’s final ANZ Twenty20 against Bangladesh, after suffering a tear to his right adductor during the BLACKCAPS 47 run victory in the second T20 at Bay Oval on Friday.

The groin injury occurred while fielding and Ronchi will be replaced in the squad by uncapped Wellington wicket-keeper Tom Blundell.

Ronchi will have a scan in the coming days to further reveal the extent of the injury, but is expected to be out for four to six weeks.

Coach Mike Hesson confirmed that Blundell would join the squad after playing in tomorrow’s McDonald’s Super Smash Grand Final in New Plymouth.

“Tom, along with George Worker, will play in the Grand Final before linking up with us after the game tomorrow night. They’ll both be eligible for Sunday’s third and final T20.

“Tom Bruce filled in admirably with the gloves today and could be an option for us behind the stumps going forward.”

The third and final Twenty20 starts at 3pm on Sunday.

DHAKA: Bangladesh omitted fast-bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the 15-man squad for the first Test against New Zealand, with selectors keen not to overburden him after a lengthy absence through injury.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim returned as captain after recovering from a hamstring injury that he picked up during the first one-day international in Christchurch on December 26.

Paceman Taskin Ahmed, a regular member of the limited-overs side but who was yet to play a Test, was also included in the squad.

Munro’s ton allows New Zealand to clinch Bangladesh T20I series

Mustafizur has featured in the limited overs matches in New Zealand, making his comeback to competitive action after undergoing shoulder surgery in August.

But Habibul Bashar, one of the selectors, said the 21-year-old left-arm bowler needed to be handled with care.

“He has just returned from injury. We don’t want to burden him with Test cricket just yet, said Bashar.

“We have a good bunch of fast bowlers in the team. Taskin (Ahmed) was cleared by the physio to play Test for the first time while Rubel (Hossain) has also returned.”

Williamson leads New Zealand to comfortable win

Bangladesh are yet to win a match on the New Zeland tour having lost the one-day international series 3-0 and trail 2-0 in three-match Twenty20 international series.

They will wrap up the visit with two Tests, with the first beginning at Wellington on January 12.

The second Test will be held in Christchurch from January 20-24.

Squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (Capt), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Sabbir Rahman, Mahmudulah, Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Hasan, Taijul Islam, Rubel Hossain, Kamrul Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Nurul Hasan, Subashis Roy.
