We want another dominant performance – Du Plessis

Thursday, 5 October 2017

Standard Bank Proteas captain, Faf du Plessis, has called for ‘another dominant performance’ in the second Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh starting at the Mangaung Oval on Friday. Du Plessis described the 333-run win in the first Test as ‘spotless’, and has urged his players for the same consistency to finish off the series on a high.

“ We want another dominant performance,” Du Plessis said at his pre-match press conference in Bloemfontein on Thursday. “ If we are honest with ourselves, in conditions like this it is important that we do that against Bangladesh. Yes, on their day they can be dangerous but we need to keep pressure on them and restrict opportunities in the game where they can get on top of us.

“In this game it is important for me that we show that consistency,” he explained. “ We were brilliant for five days in Potch, we didn’t have half-a-session that belonged to Bangladesh, it was the perfect game that we played. It is important that we back it up in another game here, that consistency is the excellence we are striving for.”

The injury to Morne Morkel has presented a selection conundrum for the selectors, who are considering the options of a like-for-like swap or an extra all-rounder. Du Plessis expects the conditions to be a lot quicker to those in Potchefstroom, encouraging signs for the pace arsenal.

“ It’s a tough one, the big thing is the loss of Morne” he said of selection. “ From a selection point of view you want to make sure the venom in your bowling attack is still the same. With Morne, KG, Dale and Vernon there is an expectation of what you are going to get, if you don’t have those guys you are not always sure. It is important for us to look at how we can best balance the side but still have a strong bowling attack.”

This series is the last Test series of 2017, and given the number of injuries to the squad’s leading fast bowlers, it has been the ideal opportunity for the brains trust to assess the depth of fast bowling resources in the country.

“With the big players missing, especially against teams like Bangladesh, it is important to see what your resources are,” Du Plessis said. “ We are unlucky that we have four bowlers injured at the same time, we are never really faced with a scenario like this. For the first time I am getting to see someone like Patto (Paterson) with the red ball and I’m able to see what he is capable of and the depth in our country.”

Standard Bank Proteas captain, Faf du Plessis, says the 2-0 Sunfoil Test series win against Bangladesh is a timely confidence boost ahead of a tough summer featuring inbound tours against India and Australia. The Proteas were convincing in both matches - winning by an innings- particularly the contributions from the batsmen, who dominated in docile conditions.

Du Plessis admits that the squad is far from the finished product, with injuries to some of their key fast bowlers and the continuous search for a winning combination in the batting line-up among the setbacks. The win is the first hurdle ahead of seven confirmed Test matches, which will be the litmus test for the squad as they challenge for the No.1 spot on the ICC Test rankings.

“First of all confidence,” he said of the positives from the series in Bloemfontein on Sunday. “ We had good targets leading into this series of what we wanted to achieve as a team; not just as a batting unit, and we achieved those goals hands down. The confidence from this series ahead of two big series at the end of the year, we appreciate that.

“ From this series there is nothing that we could have done better,” he said. “ Everyone scored runs, there were big hundreds and many hundreds, there were also some important partnerships. We are not the finished article, we understand that we are a team that needs to get better. If we get better, we will challenge for the No.1 position again.”

Du Plessis says he ‘expected a bigger fight’ from the No.9 ranked Bangladesh team, who came into the series following a drawn (1-1) series against Australia at home. While the victory will be celebrated, the captain will look ahead to having a full-strength team to pick from for the battles that lie ahead later this season.

“I expected a bigger fight,” he admitted. “ I didn’t expect them to win the series, but I expected us to go through some sessions where we would need to absorb a lot of pressure because of the skill in their team. With that, you have to say that our team did it better. When they tried to put some sort of pressure on us we responded positively and aggressively like we spoke about in the team meeting. Five or six overs after that we were back and dominating the game.

“India and Australia are going to be a lot tougher,” he said. “Bangladesh didn’t have the fire-power that we thought they would have in these conditions. We don’t get too far ahead of ourselves thinking that we are the finished article. We still have a lot of work to do to try and be the team that we want to be.”

The focus shifts to the three-match Momentum One-Day International (ODI) series starting at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Sunday. The ODI squad will assemble in Kimberley on Thursday and details of the training and media schedule will be announced shortly.

The Standard Bank Proteas are excepting a tougher challenge from Bangladesh in the three-match Momentum One-Day International (ODI) series starting at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Sunday. The visitors were comprehensively outplayed in the 2-0 Sunfoil Test series whitewash, but will be targeting a comeback in a format they have been competitive in over the years.

The No.7 ranked Bangladesh, who stunned New Zealand with a five-wicket win to reach the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals earlier this year, will be boosted by the return of star all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, who made himself unavailable for the Test series.

Proteas leg-spinner, Imran Tahir, says the squad is treating the series with due respect, despite coming in as overwhelming favourites.

“ They proved that during the Champions Trophy, they qualified for the semi-finals,” Tahir said of Bangladesh’s strength in Kimberley on Thursday. “ They are not an easy team to beat if people think that. We have to prepare like we do for any international game.

“We have to continue with the type of cricket we have been playing over the last two to three years, I have no doubt we can beat any team. It is the first game of the season in South Africa so we are up for it and will make sure we cover all of our areas for this game.

“We want to win,” he said of the series objectives. “ We have three practice days to work hard in preparation of the series. We need to be fully prepared, we are playing an international side, you can’t just arrive, turn over the arm and beat the team. We are up for it, we want to compete and play as hard as we can to win.”

The series is the start of Ottis Gibson’s road to the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup as coach, with every match from here on building the platform towards silverware in England. For the 38-year-old Tahir, the series is another opportunity to continue doing what he loves best; playing for South Africa.

“If we are looking ahead to the World Cup we will need to play hard cricket,” he explained. “ We don’t have to win all the games that are coming in front of us, a win or a loss doesn’t matter, as long as you try your best and cover all the areas that you need to as a team. I have no doubt we will do that, this team has big potential and starting from this series will be good prep for the World Cup.

“ Personally, I would love to be there,” he said of the 2019 showpiece. “ I want to work hard on my fitness and do well for South Africa to make sure I am there. I don’t want to leave the space that I’m in at the moment, I love my cricket, that is my life and I want to give everything I’ve got for South Africa. That is how I want to play my cricket until the end.”

David Miller is set to make his 100th One Day International (ODI) appearance for the Standard Bank Proteas in the first Momentum ODI against Bangladesh at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Sunday. Miller joins an elite group of ODI specialists to have achieved the milestone, ranking alongside AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis in the current squad.

The 28-year-old has come of age in the Proteas line-up since his debut against the West Indies in 2010, and is adamant about his desire to take on more responsibility on and off the field as a senior player in the side. He has spent the majority of his career floating between the No.5 and No.6 positions in the middle order, where he has scored 2396 runs at an average of 39.27 including four centuries.

His destructive hitting has earned him a valuable reputation in limited-overs cricket and across domestic T20 Leagues around the world, but he admits consistency in performances for the Proteas is an area he would like to focus on ahead of an important two-year period leading up to the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019.

“ It’s been up and down,” he said of his career in Kimberley on Friday. “ It is something that I have enjoyed, it has been a dream come true for me to play for my country. Playing 100 ODI’s; I never dreamt of playing that many games for my country and as the journey has gone on I have enjoyed it more and more.

“I have taken more responsibility in my own game and off the field has well, it has been a huge learning curve over the last seven years, one that I will not forget.”

Miller returns to a happy hunting ground in the Diamond Oval, a venue where he has produced record-breaking performances in his debut season with the VKB Knights. He smashed a career-best 177 off 195-balls for the Knights in a Sunfoil Series match against the bizhub Highveld Lions late last season and followed it up with 123 off 86 balls in a Momentum One-Day Cup clash against the same opponents earlier this year.

“ It is my home ground these days because I play for the Knights,” he said of the Diamond Oval. “ It has been a good ground for me in the past and it is something that I would like to keep going. It isn’t the biggest ground or town, I just feel a good energy about the place, the pitch is also always a good one. I will just look to take the opportunities when they come but I have really enjoyed it here.”

The Standard Bank Proteas have hit the reset button ahead of the first Momentum One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Sunday. Captain, Faf du Plessis, has warned against complacency following the 2-0 whitewash in the Sunfoil Test series, adding that the change in formats will be an opportunity for the visitors to regroup.

AB de Villiers and JP Duminy return to the international fold after a long break, and will bring a fresh injection of energy and hunger. The series is the start of an important summer of trial and assessment for the ODI squad, as plans for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup start to gain momentum.

“ Bangladesh has proven in white-ball cricket that they can perform outside of their country,” Du Plessis said in Kimberley on Saturday. “ It was shown recently in the Champions Trophy when they made the semi-finals. Their record in Test cricket away from home is completely different, in white-ball cricket they have shown they are a dangerous side. The Test match victory was nice and we dominated them, but we are expecting a different challenge in the one-day series.

“ The team mood is the same, nothing has changed,” he explained. “ It is normal business for us, it is back to one-day cricket. We want to prove a point in one-day cricket, last year was a good year for us, bar the Champions Trophy. There were a lot of good things that we did to get ourselves to No.1 in the world, by playing some good dominating cricket. We are looking to do more of the same this year and it will be important to start it against Bangladesh ahead of big tours next year.”

Du Plessis explained the thinking and plans around the squad rotation policy ahead of the summer, which will be an important process to grow the player resource pool. The injuries to some key fast bowlers will also open the gap to assess how the next tier of players adapt to international cricket.

“ Our policy over the next two years is to try and have a look at more players than we usually do,” he explained. “ Over the last two to three years we have had a settled one-day unit, there hasn’t been a lot of guys coming in. We have a vision for the next two years to try and see how we can grow players and how they can fit into the strongest eleven in a World Cup side.

“ There are a few players in the squad for this series,” he said. “ We will try to use the opportunity to play everyone but going forward our squad will also change, we don’t want to just look at 15 players, we want to look a group of 20-plus players over the next few years. It will be a great opportunity to see some new guys.”

The Proteas have the opportunity to move to No.1 on the ICC ODI Team rankings if they produce a clean series sweep against Bangladesh.

FRYLINCK CALLED UP TO PROTEAS T20 SQUAD

Tuesday, 17 October 2017

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today named Hollywoodbets Dolphin all-rounder Robbie Frylinck as a new cap in the Standard Bank Proteas T20 International squad for the two-match series against Bangladesh to be played next week.

“The selection of Robbie provides another opportunity to explore our depth in the important all-rounder position,” commented CSA National Selection Panel Convener Linda Zondi. “Apart from his bowling strengths he has a proven record as a finisher with the bat.”

Zondi also explained the rationale behind the decision to rest Imran Tahir. “Imran remains our first-choice spinner in both the limited overs formats but we also need to develop depth in this important area which is why we have given further opportunities to Shamsi and Phangiso.”

Faf du Plessis resumes the captaincy after missing the series in England while the selectors have also decided to rest Kagiso Rabada who has been playing non-stop cricket for the Proteas for an extended period of time.

Wayne Parnell could not be considered because of injury.

Sa don't need any specialist bowler. If abd or hashim or qdk bowls still bd will lose here. Hopeless bd both in bowling and batting

Nineteen-year-old Wiaan Mulder is still processing his unexpected call-up to the Standard Bank Proteas One-Day International (ODI) squad for the remaining two matches of the Momentum ODI series against Bangladesh. Mulder was withdrawn from the bizhub Highveld Lions’ Sunfoil Series match taking place in Potchefstroom last night, a whirlwind 24 hours that has resulted in the culmination of a dream come true.

“ It’s still a bit of a dream,” he said in Paarl on Tuesday. “ It hasn’t really sunk in, I only got here (Paarl) three hours ago, but it’s an absolute dream to spend time with guys like AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla. They are going to be legends forever so I’m going to try and feed off them and do my absolute best to become one of them one day.

“ I got the call at about three o’clock yesterday afternoon,” he said of his call-up. “ I hadn’t gone in to bat yet and the coach (Geoffrey Toyana) told me that I was going to be replaced by someone else. I was very happy and tried to get a ‘not out’ overnight. It’s a funny feeling knowing that you’ll be leaving the game but it was one of those things that was the best for me at this stage.”

Mulder, who has two first-class hundreds and 33 wickets since making his debut last year, says he would like to develop into a ‘genuine all-rounder’ that can contribute successfully with both bat and ball. He is another South Africa U19 success story following in the steps of Kagiso Rabada, Andile Phehlukwayo and Aiden Markram, and will be following a similar recipe for success from his peers.

“ Something Aiden Markram told me sums it up,” he said. “ He told me to go out there and be myself, I shouldn’t try to prove a point to anybody and try be someone that I am not. At this stage it’s about having the freedom and peace of mind that no matter what, I’ll still be the same person. That is a big thing that has helped me with my success, going out there and not being too worried about what people are saying but to just do my best.

“ That is the thing that a lot of young guys can struggle with,” he explained. “ The mindset of being yourself is tough; you want to impress, you want to be the guy who stands up when the occasion is there. That has helped me through all of this.”

Proteas coach, Ottis Gibson, says Mulder’s call-up is another opportunity to groom a potential player for the future. Mulder is unlikely to play on Wednesday, with the coach hinting at sticking with a winning combination, but will no doubt gain valuable insight and knowledge of the demands of international cricket.

“ He is very talented,” Gibson said of Mulder. “ On one of the first days I got into the country I went down to the Wanderers and he was playing, I saw him and immediately liked him. I asked a question about him and they said he was in the system already, a good young U19 player. One of the things we are trying to do as a one-day team is widening the pool of players that we have to choose from. He is here now because he is talented and is somebody who in two years’ time, if developed in the right way, there is no reason why he can’t be part of the squad going forward.”

The Proteas have an opportunity to seal the series in the second match at Eurolux Boland Park on Wednesday, following the 10-wicket romp in Kimberley on Sunday. The Proteas lead the three-match series 1-0 with play scheduled to start at 10h00 local time.

We see how much we missed Fizz. Same bolod batsmen couldnt buy a run off of him in the famous 2-1 series.

Media Advisory: Hashim Amla rested for final Momentum ODI | Training and media schedule in East London

Thursday, 19 October 2017

Standard Bank Proteas opening batsman, Hashim Amla, has been rested for the final Momentum One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh taking place at Buffalo Park in East London on Sunday. Amla has been in prolific form in both the Test and ODI series against Bangladesh, with an aggregate of 492 runs in two Tests and two ODIs including three consecutive centuries. Amla has been replaced by Proteas Test opener, Aiden Markram, who has earned his maiden ODI call-up following a successful Test debut. The Proteas lead the series 2-0.

The squad will travel to East London on Thursday ahead of the final match of the series.

Faf du Plessis has been withdrawn from the upcoming KFC T20 International series against Bangladesh due to injury. Du Plessis retired hurt on 91 in the third ODI against Bangladesh at Buffalo Park in East London on Sunday, and was unable to take further part in the match.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained: “ Faf sustained an acute left lumbar (lower-back) strain while batting and immediately left the field in extreme discomfort. He will return back to Cape Town overnight for investigation and further management. He has been withdrawn from the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh starting in Bloemfontein on Thursday.”

JP Duminy will captain the T20 squad in Du Plessis’ absence and all-rounder, Dwaine Pretorius, has been named as the replacement player.

Tuesday, 24 October 2017

Standard Bank Proteas captain, Faf du Plessis, has been ruled out for up to six weeks due to a lower back injury. Du Plessis sustained the injury during the third Momentum One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh on Sunday, with subsequent investigations confirming the diagnosis.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee said: “ Faf consulted with our team of specialists in Cape Town on Monday. Further investigations and assessment have confirmed an acute lumbar disc injury. He will require a period of rest and rehabilitation for the next six weeks. We anticipate him to be ready for the Test match against Zimbabwe in December.”

The Standard Bank Proteas T20 squad have challenged themselves to continue with the same dominant performances from the Test and ODI series when they take on Bangladesh in the first KFC T20 International in Bloemfontein on Thursday. The squad has a new look and feel with a number of fresh faces, who will all be hoping to make an impression on new coach, Ottis Gibson.

JP Duminy comes in to lead the side in the absence of Faf du Plessis, after last captaining the side in a 2-1 series defeat to Australia in 2014. Duminy made clear the squad’s goals and objectives ahead of the first match at the Mangaung Oval, which will introduce the newly installed LED lights for the first time on Thursday evening.

Duminy says although Bangladesh have struggled to match up to the Proteas in all of the matches on the tour so far, they will have a stronger case in the shorter explosive format.

“ The shorter the format the closer teams come together,” Duminy said to the media on Wednesday. “ Bangladesh are a formidable T20 team, we expect a fierce competition in these two matches. The goal for us, as it would have been in the Test and the one-day series, is to win the series 2-0, that will be our main focus.

“ There are two ways to look at it,” he said of the visitors’ approach. “It can be a dangerous thing because they have nothing to lose. Or they could have one foot on the plane ready to go home. Tomorrow will determine that. The main focus for us as a team is on what we want to get out of this series.”

Hollywood Bets Dolphins all-rounder, Robbie Frylinck, is the only debutant in the squad, which features a host of players looking to breakthrough in the limited-overs format. The selectors look set to continue with the same trend of giving players opportunities, which has successfully unearthed a new crop of players for the future this past month.

“It’s a great opportunity for him if he gets the go ahead,” he said of Frylinck. “It doesn’t matter at what age you come in, he has come in with a lot of experience and has played many games for his franchise. The experience is there, the key for him is to execute those skills under this type of pressure.

“ This is the platform where we all get tested,” he added. “ This is the highest platform where players want to play, if you can test your skills here and come out on top, this is the place where you want to play.”

The Standard Bank Proteas have the opportunity to cement their place in history if they come out on top in the second KFC T20 International against Bangladesh at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Sunday. Victory will give the Proteas their third consecutive series whitewash across the formats this tour, the first South African team to achieve this milestone against touring opposition.

The match is Potchefstroom’s first T20 International, and also stands as South Africa’s 100th T20 International since the inception of the format in 2005. There have been 73 caps since the Proteas’ first match against New Zealand at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in 2005, with JP Duminy leading the run-scoring list with 1696 runs and Dale Steyn topping the wickets table with 58.

Proteas batsman, Farhaan Behardien, says the squad is adapting to the new ideas and thinking from coach, Ottis Gibson, and will be approaching the match with the same intent and freedom from the opening match on Thursday. Behardien’s unbeaten 36 off 17 balls in the 20-run victory was an exemplary finishing effort, and has sparked confidence in his approach and mindset ahead of the series decider.

“ We play to win every game,” Behardien said in Potchefstroom on Saturday. “ We want to have a clean sweep and not give Bangladesh a sniff before they travel back home. After this we go back to our franchises for the CSA T20 Challenge so it will be important to finish the international season on a high before the Indian series next year.

“ Our new coach Ottis Gibson has brought some fresh ideas to the team,” he said. “ There are no limits, there isn’t anything that we can’t do, be it batting or bowling, the sky is the limit. We have been playing really well. We have given some youngsters opportunities and tomorrow is another opportunity to showcase their talent.”

The match is scheduled to start at 14h30 local time.

Standard Bank T20 International squad: Hashim Amla (WSB Cape Cobras), Farhaan Behardien (Multiply Titans), Quinton de Kock (bizhub Highveld Lions), AB de Villiers (Multiply Titans), JP Duminy (WSB Cape Cobras, capt), Robbie Frylinck (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Beuran Hendricks (bizhub Highveld Lions), David Miller (VKB Knights), Mangaliso Mosehle (bizhub Highveld Lions), Dane Paterson (WSB Cape Cobras), Aaron Phangiso (bizhub Highveld Lions), Dwaine Pretorius (bizhub Hughveld Lions), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Tabraiz Shamsi (Multiply Titans).
