The BBC has suspended a star of its Asian Network in a row over online messages littered with lewd comments and racist slurs.

Host Tommy Sandhu, 40, was one of at least four colleagues allegedly part of WhatsApp groups sharing sexist comments as well as homophobic remarks and a derogatory term for Pakistanis.

One of the men in the messaging group allegedly made lewd remarks about Amy Elizabeth Childs, 31, a Radio 1 and 1Xtra producer with aspirations to be a presenter.

Vile sexist comments were also made about female Asian Network staff, including young assistant producer Amanpreet Kaur.

The WhatsApp messaging platform is highly encrypted and supposed to be impossible to crack. These messages were accidentally linked to a BBC laptop where Miss Kaur stumbled across them.

Sources said the BBC has opened a major investigation and has already taken disciplinary action against some of those involved.

It is not clear how many people were part of the secret messaging groups but they included Asheesh Sharma and Kejal Kamani, two radio producers who routinely join Mr Sandhu on air, and a disc jockey known as DJ Sachy.

It is not known if all the men made comments or if some were just part of the groups.

Mr Sharma has been given a final written warning and Mr Kamani has been fired, it is understood. DJ Sachy, who has worked at the station as a freelance for years, has been told he will not get any more shifts, insiders said.

Sources close to Mr Sandhu claim he did not make derogatory comments himself and was simply part of WhatsApp groups where some of the remarks were made.

The London-born host is currently fighting to save his job at the BBC, where he is also an occasional host of The One Show and BBC1’s religious and current affairs show Sunday Morning Live!

He first caught the eye of bosses after being a contestant on Blind Date and later became the voice of ‘Our Graham’ who would tell host Cilla Black about the candidates.

BBC Asian Network staff also used the messaging groups to make vile homophobic slurs, calling one colleague a ‘batty boy’ and another a ‘Gandu’, Indian slang for bottom and a derogatory term for a homosexual. They also accused a fellow radio host of being gay, even though he is married.
Embarrassingly for the BBC, the WhatsApp groups were also used to take racist pot-shots at Pakistanis.

According to insiders, one of the men suggested they refuse to play any music by Pakistanis on the breakfast show even though the network was set up to cater to all Asian groups.

Another message referred to BBC entertainment reporter Haroon Rashid as a ‘****’. When one of the men did some work with Noreen Khan, another BBC Asian Network DJ, they were asked on the messaging group ‘have them ***** converted you?’, according to sources.

The matter came to light within the last week and has sparked alarm within the BBC. It is still reeling from public and staff anger over the huge disparity in its pay for men and women, and for white and non-white stars.
Yesterday insiders said that those caught up in the BBC Asian Network scandal have been warned not to speak to the press.

Broadcasting union Bectu has also warned members not to discuss the matter.
A BBC spokesman said: ‘We never comment on matters concerning any individuals working with the BBC. Any allegations of inappropriate behaviour would always be taken extremely seriously and would be dealt with swiftly and appropriately.’

The broadcaster has offered Miss Kaur a job elsewhere but she has opted to stay at the station.

The BBC Asian Network costs around £7.5million a year to run and is listened to by nearly 650,000 people a week, according to latest figures. It was nearly shut in 2010 when it was pulling in just 477,000 listeners a week. The station was reprieved on the proviso it boosted ratings and slashed its budget.

Miss Childs – who goes by the name Amy Elizabeth – declined to comment. ‘I just don’t think I can talk about that at the moment,’ she said. Mr Kamani and Mr Sandhu also declined to comment.

For now these Indian's will be lining up to sign on for jobseeker's allowance:maqsood :rp I assure you the Pakistani community will be taking care of them one way or another!

Tommy Sandhu had Riz Ahmed on his show, and was all up on him like a rash, he's not gonna survive this.

Indian's seem to think they are immune and exempt from racist attacks!!:harby

No they don't, they just understand their place in the pecking order in British society. The adopted British forenames like Tommy, and the aping of their superiors with the '****' jokes just reflects their belief that they can dilute some of that racism by adopting the 'Hey, look white people, we are just like you!.Hate them not us!' if you ever read anything about slavery in the old America you could make an analogy with the house '*****' to the 'field *****'.

Quite difficult to make a point when descriptions are censored despite there being no bad language involved. |For those wondering, the **** jokes actually refers to the common abbreviation of Pakistani, and the house ***** and field ***** refers to slaves of African descent.

Serves him right. Some Indians have grown too big for their shoes, need to be cut to size.

For some odd reason this reminds me of some Indian big shot who was a big Raptors fan. He was caught sledging the opposition team and was publicly humiliated by removing from the stadium infront of everyone.

So what you are saying is that they like to distance themselves from Pakistanis and Muslim's? I agree with that! Additionally they have tried their best by adopting everything about western culture from dating to their ladies dressing in not much!! No matter what they can't ever change their skin colour no matter how hard they try. Most racists are fully aware that they are non Muslims yet that does not make them exempt from racust abuse either. Indian's have always been coat hangers and followers of which community has been in power from the Mughal's to the Brit's and now the American's.

No worries we got what you meant. House 'mouse' and field 'mouse'

In a thread about racisim, there are accusations against Indians of wearing less clothes, knowing our place in our British society and what not.

On topic serves him right,Black and Brown people have always complained about racisim but are discriminatory in many ways.

Indians seem to suffer more racism in America and Australia in particular then Pakistanis do. Regularly, you hear of racist attacks on their own people on Indian websites. Every community can be physically harmed and verbally abused. Indian people need to remember this.

It's something I've noticed on the BBC. The coverage for Pakistanis (or Bengalis) is minimal and skewed. From the news (BBC news website-Asia section) to BBC radio (e.g. radio 4 partition segment). The posts are mainly filled by indian coconuts. Reading the article in the OP has confirmed those thoughts of bias.

Interesting this.

BBC Asian Network in the news once again for the wrong reasons.

BBC Network being taken to the cleaners again. Indian people all defensive on this issue after vicious attacks by Pakistanis online. Even the Chinese are having a major go at them as well. They deserve this, no sympathy for racists like Indian's.

Why is this channel still on air? £7.5M of taxpayers money(licence fee) is being wasted.

Not surprised by these revelations, The Asian Network debates are usually filled with hating on certain religions and people without offering any constructive debate. The sooner this rubbish channels closes the better.

Not surprising. Whenever Indian people argue amongst themselves there are always racist undertones. By and large they are a racist people. I have always believed this.

Oh plzz.

Everyone sprouts crap in watsapp group chats. Everyone has something nasty to say.

Thing is we all do it. And those messages were not for the public to see.

I do and so do many others.

We all have something negative that we dont say out in public.

Thing is the messages were hacked.

They were never inteded for the public

I don't either, furthermore I'm not a public figure like Tommy Sandhu either. Some people who have lived in the third world perhaps don't realise that public figures aren't allowed to get away with casual racism and still keep their job on a popular broadcasting channel in the UK.

Maybe Tommy Sandhu should move to Pakistan where he can keep company with Major and they can spout their racist nonsense to each other on social media to their heart's content

Better he move to his homeland India where "jaat" as they call it is an obsession!

Not only was he a public figure but one whose wages are paid by the licence payers. What's worse is he worked in an environment were all types of Asians worked together and their supposed purpose was to create harmony between all but this clown has betrayed his own work mates.

He should go and work with Major, as Im sure no such rules exist at his employment.

He will fit in nicely in India, having sold his identity to his masters, symbolised by his anglicised name. But then he also fits in nicely in the UK, where the racist churchill is still revered as a role model.

Again. Watsapp groups arnt open for public....

Standing by doing nothing is pretty much condoning it in my book. Racism has no place in our society and there should be a zero tolerance attitude towards it.

Regarding BBC "Asian" Network, it's pretty much wall to wall Bollywood music. It makes me cringe when the presenters can't pronounce the simplest of words in urdu/hindi. Also went to the BBC Asian Network live event this year, not one Pakistani artist was present, so this backs up the ant-pakistani theory.

I don't even have a problem with them playing wall to wall Bollywood music. It's an Asian channel, if they want to make it an Indian/Korean collaboration effort that's fine by me. But they should stop tarring the good name of the BBC with their racist and homophobic garbage, doesn't matter if they want to do it calling themselves Tommy or Pradeep.

i havent ever met a desi person who was a big follower of BBC Asian Network. They have some good songs on at times n bhangra tunes but mostly a dead station. Stupid from this guy too considering he is a public figure to use those type of slurs to mock someone.

its one thing having cross cultural banter but obviously crossed a line.

Apparently he himself didn't make them, he was just part of a group where they were made.

It is natural for Sandhu to claim innocence after this epic humiliation. By the way his community is not exempt from racist attacks either. The BBC must have investigated before firing him. Hope this Indian enjoys living on job seeker's allowance!! :yk2

The day I start using racist language in any form of dialogue I have with people is the day I begin to accept being called a P**i. It's sad that for you using racist language is normal. The fact that you believing that everyone is the way you think they are doesn't stop you from being a better person.

This idiot should know that to most whites he is also a "P@ki" as well. There are far more insulting and humiliating remarks white people use for Indian's. In the above video his face has "guilty" written all over it.

Good point, I apologise on their behalf

It's a shame that these people who are themselves descended from the same racial profile, feel that making racist comments against Pakistanis is somehow going to make them fit in with the white British populace. People can moan all they like about this disgusting brown nosing behaviour but I have to call it out for what it is.

The whatsapp group in question was full of brown people, there weren't any white folks in there. Let not make excuses for their behaviour - they weren't being racist to please white people they were being racist being they were racist bigots.

It's a mentality which was created by white people. I'm sure you will recognise that terms like P@ki were initially coined by white racists and these Indian fellows must feel it puts them on a par by apeing them. Of course not all white people or Indians will share these reprehensible views, but it is disappointing that so many feel it is okay to indulge in such banter which in itself says a lot about the overall culture they feel they are a part of.
