With an eye on the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, the BCCI has shortlisted a pool of 20 players, sources told NDTV. Also, top players could be asked to skip the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the BCCI wanting players to focus on ICC events, in order to avoid injury problems. The decision was taken during BCCI's performance review meeting, which took place at a seven star hotel in Mumbai. In attendance were coach Rahul Dravid, Captain Rohit Sharma, NCA chairman VVS Laxman, ex Chief selector Chetan Sharma. Board President Roger Binny joined through video conferencing.

Team India will play 35 ODIs in T20I, starting with an upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka on home soil.

With focus on the workload management of the players, the NCA will work in tandem with the 10 IPL franchises, in order to keep a track of the fitness of the players.

During the review meeting, the BCCI also had three key recommendations for the Indian cricket team going forward, which are as follows:

1. The emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to be eligible for selection to the national team.

2. The Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of selection criteria and implemented in the customized roadmaps of the central pool of players.

3. Keeping in mind the Men's FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023.

The meeting was held to review Team India's performance in 2022, which saw failing to win both, the Asia Cup, as well as the T20 World Cup.

Interesting move but India have good reserves

Wonder if Pakistan can also do this to preserve players form injury?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a performance review meeting in Mumbai on Sunday. The meeting was attended by BCCI President Roger Binny, Honorary Secretary Jay Shah, Team India captain Rohit Sharma, Team India head coach Rahul Dravid, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman and the chairman of the selection committee Chetan Sharma. Notably, the BCCI had decided to conduct the review meeting after India's exit from the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final.

The roadmap for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India was discussed at the meeting, along with issues related to player availability and workload management.

The BCCI also had three key recommendations for the Indian cricket team going forward:

Notably, in 2022, Team India had underwhelming campaigns at the Asia Cup in the UAE, as well as the T20 World Cup in Australia.

In the Asia Cup, India failed to reach the final after losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage.

In the T20 World Cup, India suffered a crushing 10-wicket defeat to eventual champions England in the sem-final.

So injury prone players have been asked to skip IPL? I have been saying this same thing for many years. BCCI finally realised this. :inti

Good decision. You don't need to try more players randomly. Stick it to 20 which I said earlier and now my voice has gone to BCCI president it seems.

My 20 would be :

Rohit
Kishan(wkt)
Gill

Kohli
Shreyas
Surya
KL(wkt)
Samson(wkt)

Pandya
Jadeja
Sundar
Axar
D Hooda

Bumrah
Shami
Siraj
Umran
Prasidh

Kuldeep
Chahal( Bishnoi not sure about his ODI game)

That's 20 and we need to preserve one more spot for our Gabba hero if he can make a comeback that would be great. :inti

Mis reporting. No one has been told to skip IPL. Rather they have been told to manage the work load.

Ha missing IPL! It's all media PR for now, nothing is going to be ever implemented. Neither BCCi is doing to ask to nor players are going to obey such orders.

How do the franchises, which are paying millions to these players feel about this? Surely their brand ( and their sponsors brand) is affected if these players don’t take the field?

How do the TV companies that have paid billions in rights fees feel about the top stars not playing every game?

If I’m a lawyer for the franchises/sponsors, I’d be looking at breach of contract by the BCCI, especially if players are fit during the IPL.

Rest does not always mean good performance.

Look at Kohli, what a massive ding has resting for every other series caused him:

By playing less games I think? Isn't that similar to not playing all of the IPL?

No. They have to co-ordinate with the NCA regards to how much workload the particular player is undergoing, his fitness status currently, his test results and everything.

The players conditioning and fitness will not be left to the franchisee alone, but done in coordination with the NCA.

This ofcourse applies to centrally contracted players only. But buzz is that BCCI is particularly looking at 3 players.

Pandya
Bumrah
Jadeja

The next WC is in India. If as a franchisee or sponsor i tried to put a spoke in India's plan for the WC i would be gathering a load of negative publicity. Something that is too much for doing some compromise for 1 season on IPL.

The transition period of Indian cricket has already started. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are unlikely to play T20 cricket regularly and their future in ODI cricket is set to bear the same look after this year's World Cup at home. Both Rohit and Kohli have been pillars of Indian cricket for 10 years or so. They still are among the top 10 batters in world cricket as far as limited-overs cricket is concerned but a lot has changed in the last couple of years. The runs don't come as regularly as they used to from both of these stalwarts' bats, there is a pool of talent waiting for opportunities. India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, therefore, said it will be better if India don't pin their hopes of winning the World Cup on Kohli and Rohit alone.

"If you want to win the World Cup, the coach, selectors, and team management will have to make some tough decisions. Personal interests will have to take a backseat and they will need to think about the team. Aap Virat pe, Rohit pe ya 2-3 players pe bhadosa karenge ki wo hume World Cup jeetayenge toh aisa kabhi bhi nahi ho sakta (If you think Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and 2-3 players will win us the World Cup then that's never going to happen). You should believe in your team. Do we have such a team? Definitely. Do we have certain match winners? Yes, of course! We have players who can win the World Cup," Kapil told ABP News.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels seniors like skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are great players of spin, will play a massive role in the ODI World Cup, to be held in the country later this year. Gambhir said India need to identify fearless players and have a mixture of cricketers in the 50-over format. "First, you need to identify the players who got that fearless approach and probably in a format like 50 overs you need to have a mixture of every kind of player. There are players who can anchor their innings. Change in role has also made a huge difference," Gambhir said Star Sports show 'Road to World Cup Glory'.

"I feel people like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and all those guys who can anchor their innings, who probably can play spin really well will play a massive role the coming World Cup." The cricketer-turned politician said the introduction of two balls from two ends has changed the template in ODIs.

"During that time we had only one new ball, now we've got two new balls with five fielders inside. So, the role of a part timer has gone out of the window. The reverse swings, you don't see enough of reverse swings anymore, you don't see enough of chase for the finger spinners as well," Gambhir said.

"But, I always feel that when we talk about this new approach, which India always talks about, the template and stuff, you've got to identify players who can adapt those roles or that template very easily." Gambhir said India need to stick to a set of players and try them in matches to succeed in the ODI World Cup at home.

"If they want to take a break, people who play more than three formats, they can definitely take a break from T20 cricket, but surely not from the ODI format. They got to play together.

"I think the biggest mistake that Indian cricket has made in the last two World Cups has been that these guys have not played enough of cricket together. Tell me how many times have we got the best playing 11 on the park? "We haven't, only during the World Cup we decided to have the best playing 11, but unfortunately that was never the best playing 11," he said.

Gambhir said if need be Indian cricketers should avoid playing the IPL and need to prioritise 50-over cricket keeping the World Cup in mind.

"So these guys have to play enough of white-ball cricket, especially for the 50 overs World Cup together irrespective whether they want to take a break from the T20 or from the IPL. But the break has to happen in the T20 format and not the 50 overs.

"If the franchisee has to suffer they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder, not the IPL. IPL is just the by product. So, if India goes out and wins the World Cup, that is the bigger ovation, that is the bigger ring," he said.

"...if an important player does miss the IPL games so be it, because IPL happens every year and the World Cup happens only once in four years. So, for me I think winning the World Cup is far more important than winning the IPL."
