Deccan Chargers, the Hyderabad-based IPL franchise, has been officially put up for sale by its owners Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited. The sale, announced in a newspaper advertisement on Thursday, will be through a bidding process that will be completed on September 13, with the winning bid announced on the same day.
The franchise, whose owners have been facing financial problems, had approached the Indian board for help and the advertisement says the bid process will take place "under the aegis of the BCCI". The tender notice makes it clear that the franchise will continue to be based in Hyderabad and that the winning bidder will acquire the franchise on an "as is, where is" basis - implying retention of the franchise name - but leaves the possibility of a fresh franchise agreement between the new owner and the BCCI open.

Chargers, which has been reportedly mortgaged to banks, has been under pressure from its lenders to service its debt obligations. The bulk of the winning bid could go towards paying back the debt, with the notice directing the winning party to pay the consideration into a bank account as decided by the lenders. Five percent of the winning amount will have to be paid directly to the BCCI.

Deccan Chronicle had been trying to sell the whole or part of the franchise for some time now, with T Venkattram Reddy, the Deccan Chronicle chairman, telling the Economic Times recently that they were in advanced talks with potential buyers. But the deal reportedly ran into complications with some investors in the franchise asking the board to get involved.

The franchise was bought by Deccan Chronicle for $107 million in the first IPL team auction in 2008. At the time, it was the third-most expensive franchise, after Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Looking at the price it was bought for, i expect the owner to make a hefty profit .

I think Anil Ambani has been on the lookout for a team . He will probably get it for like $ 250 million .

I think 2 companies are already interested in this, i think it was Sun TV Network (or maybe Sun Dish) and some other company

Franchise owners will get huge crowd support if they play all their home matches at visakapatanam

Naveen reddy, please take care of Gayathri reddy:)

Lol. I do not know what this meant... But my dislike of kalanadhi Maran or his family has nothing to do with me being reddy or Telugu speaking!!
Gayatri reddy:( ... I hope she retains like 5 % ..so she can be there:D

^^^

5% stake to 1% stake in 15 mins :(

Her father owes like around 1,000 crores to people I think..! so 5 % may be a big too much..!!

however...i think his problems will end once he sells this...

Apparently videocon is very interested. not a bad option
btw... will they change the name? coz i know the region is deccan..but major part of it had to with venkat reddy being owner of deccan chronicle. I would like an exclusively hyderabadi name!!!

BCCI to Pay Rs 4,800 Crore to Deccan Chargers for Wrongful Termination

Former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Deccan Chargers have won their arbitration case against the BCCI.

In a major blow to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Deccan Chargers has won the arbitration case against the game's governing body.

Bombay High Court-appointed arbitrator retired Justice CK Thakkar delivered the verdict on July 17 and told BCCI to pay Rs 4,800 crore as compensation by September this year.

Deccan Chargers had won the second edition of the Indian Premier League in 2009 when the franchise was owned by Hyderabad-based media house Deccan Chronicle. But the franchise was mired in controversies when the promoter ran into financial problems.

Dhir and Dhir Associates represented Deccan Chronicle in the arbitral proceedings while BCCI was represented by Maniar Srivastava Associates.

"BCCI had terminated the contract of Deccan Chronicle a day before. The challenge was in respect of illegal and premature termination and the tribunal has also come to the conclusion that the termination was premature," Ashish Pyasi, associate partner of Dhir and Dhir Associates, told Moneycontrol.

Earlier in 2017, a similar arbitration case was won by the owners of Kochi Tusker Kerala.

BCCI had called for a tender and the franchise was bought by Sun TV Network and rebranded as Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In 2012, Deccan Chronicle had challenged the 'alleged illegal termination' in the Bombay High Court.

Comments: I wonder how badly will this judgement hit the BCCI coffers

Not sure about cricket but Deccan Charger by far had the best theme song in IPL till date. Just for that, they should never have been terminated.

Should just give them another team.

BCCI can challenge the arbitrators order before the Bombay High Court.

No money will exchange hands, they will be offered a franchise as compensation for free

I think you are right. They will be offered an expansion team and considered paid. It could be right in Hyderabad too. I am sure several Indian cities can handle two IPL franchises.

That's a lot of money.

If they are offered a team, it will be awkward because there is already Sunrisers Hyderabad and they are a damn good team.too, tournament contenders always.
