Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh believes the BCCI did not manage his former teammates such as Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan well towards the end of their careers and hoped the board will recognise the efforts of match-winners in the future and honour them for their contribution towards Indian cricket.

Yuvraj, who retired from international cricket last year after playing for 19 years, did not get a farewell game and neither did Zaheer or Sehwag. Yuvraj also feels that the way BCCI handled him towards the end of his career was ‘unprofessional’, although it wasn’t surprising for him.

“Giving someone a farewell, that’s not for me to decide. It’s up to the BCCI. But I felt the way that they managed me towards the end of my career, was very unprofessional,” Yuvraj told SportsKeeda. “But looking back at some of the great players from India - Harbhajan [Singh], [Virender] Sehwag, Zaheer Khan - were also badly mismanaged. It’s part of Indian cricket, I have seen that in the past so I wasn’t really surprised.”

Yuvraj last played for India during the tour of West Indies in 2017. Earlier that year in January, Yuvraj made his final comeback into the Indian team during the ODI series against England and smashed a career-best 150 in Cuttack.

Yuvraj was part of the India’s squad for the 2017 Champions Trophy where his only significant contribution was a knock of 53 against Pakistan. Yuvraj, who announced his retirement in the middle of the World Cup last year, wants the BCCI will pay respect to some of the greats of the game, who couldn’t finish their careers on a high.

“But in the future, anybody who has played for India for a long time and has been through tough situations, you should definitely honour him. Give him that respect, somebody like Gautam Gambhir, who has won two World Cups for us. Sehwag, who has been the biggest match-winner after Sunil Gavaskar in Tests. Zaheer, who has 350 wickets, Laxman... and all these guys,” said Yuvraj.

I think Yuvraj is overreacting. Most players end their careers quietly. Not every player deserves a royal sendoff.

Looks like former players in most of the sub continent are not very fond of the way their respective boards handled the later part of their careers and how they were not given proper farewells.

They are too dramatic and often don't know when to quit.

Not a fond of farewell matches myself as I think its unprofessional just to play someone for the sake of it, if he makes it on merit then good enough. However, I think players should officially take retirements when its the right time and boards should honor them at the end of an international match or series.

But our players wont do that :))

He is a great LOI player but he has been clearly over-reacting. He is not happy with the fact that he was not given plenty of chances like say, MS Dhoni is given or treated well by giving a special farewell when he retired. Same is the case with Sehwag also. Even Harbhajan and Gambhir felt that they were dropped wrongly.

Precisely, neither of them deserved even a bit more chance but our team management has a problem that we end up giving a lot more chances or provide special farewells to players of Tendulkar, Virat and Dhoni stature. Hence, the likes of Yuvi, Viru, Bhajji and Gauti keep on crying over it.

Surprisingly they all seem to be the ones that actually get on with Pakistanis and try to engage with Pakistan fans.

Sehwag is a troll and his choice of words is poor, but he has always been one of our boys at heart.

Right.
Annoying to see this kind of attitude , crying every time.
Ghaambir and Yuvi has to stop moaning, they should learn from Lakshman and Kaif.

Recently Raina also started crying

Yuvraj Singh imo did not do justice to his talent, his natural gift and talents got him so far and all his achievements are due to his natural gifts but he didn't have the Kohli work ethic to excel in all formats. He even admitted in an interview in 2012-13 that watching Kohli go about his batting drills, fielding drills, fitness, training regime day in day out made him realize why didn't he have the same hunger and drive as a youngster when he was playing for India. Yuvraj lol in the presence of Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly, Sehwag was once averaging 26.

His battle with cancer is unfortunate, thats what killed his reflexes, hand eye cordination but he failed to adapt and this is where a better work ethic might have helped him.

The BCCI dropped you at the right time. They even strung you along a little later than desired.

Just shut up and brood about why you were such a busted flush in the latter half of your career. And stop giving yourself company with other cricketers who haven't spoken about this at all - it only shows how desperate you are.

And go have fun in the useless IPL. That's a tournament nobody retires from.

True, our players struggle call an end to their careers in the hope that they might get another call up someday in the international side. I think better communication between players and boards can provide a much clearer picture. Boards should probably hint the players behind the closed doors that their time is up so that they can officially announce their retirements. Not sure what exactly is the case but there is always some dissatisfaction among most of the ex players regarding the end of their career. :mv

Why do the sub continent players esp indians feel like they deserve an extended place in the team based on past laurels You perform u keep your place Its not someones fathers team that you get to play until u decide not to

And why do they feel they all deserve grand and spectacular farewells?

Its a bizarre practice And looks like a poor a predecent has been set in the past

There seems to be too many egos and too many entitled lot

Sub continent cricketers are made of the same cloth regardless of which country they play for. Be it India or Pakistan, crying, whinging and always feeling that they were hard done by comes naturally to them.

You'll never or maybe very rarely hear of such complaints from Aussie or English cricketers. The sense of entitlement is strong with our lot.

It depends. I have not heard Dravid/Laxman cry about getting dropped. Yuvi was a LOI legend for us but he should have been dropped way earlier. He's lucky he got to play till 2017.

Yuvi got so many undeserved chances only due to his huge rep. During his latter days, he completely destroyed the game in the WC T20. I still remember that horrific game.

Exactly, his father is another one, probably his yearly hate on Dhoni would continue for next 10 years.

Yuvraj Singh is slowly becoming like his father Jograj Singh unfortunately. He has become a bitter man and serial whiner post retirement.

Why and how did BCCI treated him unfairly? Yuvraj was finished as a batsman post cancer treatment but still team management persisted with him. He was the main reason we lost 2014 T20 WC final but still got a chance to play in 2017 CT (failed again). Forget about national team, even in IPL not many teams were keen on him in recent years and only picked him 'out of sympathy and past reputation' at last minute with base price.

Yuvraj was one of the ODI legends India has produced but 'was' is the key word here. Issue in India is...players dont know when its time to quit gracefully. Look at MS Dhoni for example...still not retiring.

I think after Sachin's retirement...every one expects similar farewell series from BCCI. But just as every player is not Sachin...everyone dont deserve a farewell series like that.

I agree with Yuvi. Barring Tendulkar, his clique (Sehwag, Zaheer, Harbhajan et al) were all treated poorly. Whereas Dhoni's interests are protected by a certain few big Indian corporates.

Desi players are weird in this aspect

They overstay their welcome by a few years and when they are finally dropped and made to leave kicking and screaming, they claim they were treated badly. Yuvraj has been past it since 2012-13 and even if there were odd good performances every year they are not worth it. Same with Dhoni.

We don't know what he's referring to .. maybe it isn't about a farewell game but a lack of proper communication from the BCCI about where their career stands thus leaving them guessing and giving them false hope of a recall .. which ultimately never materialises. ECB and CA players have complained about this too, that's what I think this is about.

but Yuvraj is one of the VERY few players who has gotten permission from BCCI to even play in foreign T20 leagues when it was clear his international career was over. So BCCI made an exception for him and has been cooperating in this regard so i dont really get his complaint

Yuvraj is allowed to play in foreign leagues because he has removed his name from ipl.
This applies to each and every player, bcci is not giving Yuvraj any preferential treatment

This guy was playing many matches when he was well past his best and he is complaining about being mistreated? :))) :)))

Had enough of sportsmen crying when they are dropped and blaming everyone apart from themselves.

if anything indian board is too freaking lenient towards the old guard. Their stupid policy is what resulted in a 11 0 drubbing in the away test series from 2011 to 2013.
Far too many useless players get picked despite being well past their primes, not to mention the other absurd nepotism selections.
Australia would never endorse such policies.
