NOTTINGHAM: Under-fire India coach Ravi Shastri on Thursday called on his struggling batsmen to show more discipline and grit when the third Test against England gets underway at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

He said that despite tough conditions, need of the hour is to show resolve and play gritty cricket. England lead the five-match series 2-0 after winning the first two Tests in Birmingham and Lord's.

"Conditions have been tough right through this series. But that's where character and discipline come into play. The resolve to know where your off stump is, leave a lot of balls, be prepared to look ugly and dirty and show some grit," said Shastri.

"I don't think it's fair to single out any one player," he added, when asked about Ajinkya Rahane's struggles on this tour.

"Batsmen from both teams have struggled. When the occasion demands, it's a case of mental resolve? How you put mind over matter. Mental discipline will be the key as far as batsmen are concerned going forward in this Test match. Rahane is one of our pillars and he will remain so."

There is some good news ahead of the must-win Test for India. Skipper Virat Kohli is near full fitness ahead of the game as he batted without any discomfort and also took slip catching. Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin and Hardik Pandya have already been declared fit for the game.

India will be looking to find the optimal combination for the game, and the coach admitted that they had made a mistake going with an extra spinner at Lord's.

"Kohli is feeling much better. You saw him in the nets? He is moving much better and improving by the day.

"In hindsight, it (picking second spinner) was an error. We should have gone, seeing the conditions, with an extra seamer. It might have helped. Then again, you didn't know how much it would rain, whether a match could go into the final day where just in case a second spinner is needed and the ball starts to turn, would we have needed him?

"But in hindsight the way things panned out, the amount it rained, the time we lost, a seamer could have been a better option," said Shastri.

England are on the cusp of wrapping up the series with victory at Trent Bridge, and the only way India can avoid that is to register only their second win in six overseas Tests in 2018.

Shastri said that the team knows how to do it because they have been in this position before.

"Just believe in yourself," he said, when asked what he has told the team post defeat at Lord's.

"You have been in this position couple of times before and you have responded. There is no reason why. One thing for sure in this unit, there is no negative bone.

"Despite what happened in the last Test match, conditions favoured England but that is no excuse whatsoever. It can happen to any side. We are here without a negative bone and wanting to play to win, as simple as that."

England have a selection headache at hand with the return of Ben Stokes. Shastri said that India see no problem in why he shouldn't be playing this game, and rejected the idea that any on-field chatter could be used to rile Stokes up or indeed used against India given their loss in the previous game.

"We focus on cricket. Stokes is a terrific cricketer, and we would like to play against top cricketers. If the courts have cleared him, what's the reason for him not to play? If I were in England's position I would have wanted him to play.

"This team is not worried about who winds whom up. It will give you back as good as it gets, as simple as that. It doesn't matter if the opponent is England, Australia or South Africa. We kept it very simple? If it is a vocabulary I understand, I will give it back in that vocabulary, otherwise in the vocabulary I know best," he said.

Last but not the least, the Indian team paid its respect to late former skipper Ajit Wadekar before practice. The players and entire support staff observed two minutes of silence.

"Very sad. On behalf of the whole Indian cricket team, we would like to offer condolences to his family. I knew Ajit very well from a very young age. He lived in the same building as I do and all I will say is that he was one of our finest captains and a great manager.

"When it came to man management skills, he was as shrewd as anyone you will ever get as a captain," said Shastri signed off.

This sort of statement could backfire.

India dont need to look ugly! They need to bat !

They been looking ugly and dirty all series so far that hasnt helped.

Our openers cannot play moving ball. Pujara has shown some mettle. Poor guy just cannot score fast enough to cause any damage.
Rahane is playing like a noob. He has been out of form for God knows when.
Rahul is fighting for his spot. Looks lost and seems to be poking at every delivery that leaves him.

I am curious to know what prep the team has been doing on top of all this positive thinking. Are the coaching reading them deepak chopra or getting them in the nets for hours

Wow! That's the kind of coach you need... Come on, show some grit, show some power, Come on... Here we go...

Probably they should wear torn & sandy clothes to make it look ugly for the bowlers so that they can go off target!

Didnt he say that by the time test series starts it would be like a home series for India after having spending a month in England and playing Limited leg before tests , or was that Virat bahi

Same old cliche lines from shastri.Grit,'believe in yourself',positive mindset...blah blah blah.Mindset is meaningless if batsmen are technically exposed.2 mediocre players like bangar and shastri cant help anybody.

What does he mean by ugly and showing girt? Since when did India play beautiful cricket? Their cricket was always methodical at home and chaotic away.

I think Shastri will be shown the exit door if India comprehensively lose this series. He knows his job is on the line. Other then Kohli you can't teach average batsmen how to score runs on seaming tracks.

How much more dirty and ugly will we have to look now? Will we try to get all out on 50 this time? :inti

Somebody remove this guy from the team management. Never seen such a spineless man in Indian management.

Show grit but what's the point of looking ugly??

Lol, you dont need to look ugly and dirty to show grit.

Shastri's commentary was actually pretty good. And that is where he belongs tbh...he has no attributes to become a coach.

But Shastri is what the doctor ordered. Do you know anyone else who can be as cool as a cucumber and answer these tough media interviews like a tracer bullet? :ravi

His media encounter is as embarrasing as our defeat in Lords. Hence I said...he is not fit to be coach. But he got a good voice for commentary and should have stuck there. He is Bill Lawry for India...lol

he is lucky commentator for India..remember yuvi’s six sixers and 2011 WC final😃😃

Funny thing is how both Kohli and Shastri have sobered down a bit in the last one week. Since the last 1 year, they have had such condescending attitude towards any criticism and general responses would be "we don't care about what press says", "Looks like there are a lot of jealous people around", "I don't read newspapers. You people read the papers, we go and play cricket."...

Now all of a sudden Kohli requesting on social media that fans shouldn't give on us, we are all together blah blah...Shastri admitting mistakes were made...another test defeat and i think they will even apologize to save their captaincy and coaching jobs

this Ravi is such a useless guy...even he is now giving advises

Home-beasting and minnow-bashing has lead Shastri to conclude that preparations are for “second ranked teams”.

Ganguly is a likeable man. I will admit that I disliked him as a player however as a person he seems very sensible and mature. Shastri is annoying as hell trying to impress all with his grammar and vocabulary.

Or maybe Shastri himself is gonna come out and bat, that should scare the bajeezas out of most bowlers...he is probably thinking about doing that :bhajji

I think Ganguly will be the next Indian coach!

Ganguly is a politician type person . He is more interested in becoming head of bcci and will target icc later. He is not types to be content with coach type roles. If I remember correctly he is already Calcutta cricket association head

^^^And is the bestesht team in the world, rock stars and IPl, and money etc.

He doesn't make any sense just like his commentary.

He is a very good commentator and that is what he should have restricted himself to. Coaching is beyond his vision.

India's 2nd best commentator IMO after Harsha Bhogle.

Pretty standard coach talk. He's trying to keep a positive mood around the team and avoid an attitude of defeatism. It's about all he can do. He's given them a rev up.

He's not going to discuss each guys technique or changes in detail in the media is he?

I wonder what ugly and dirty selection blunders India will make for third test.

Three spinners? Dhawan in for Kohli? :smith

India should remove the '8 ball wonder' and try Pant in his place. Give the younger guy a chance and dispose off non-performing oldies. I wonder when we can see the young whizkid in the team.. Shaw and Gill. After seeing Shaheen do well, India should take a leaf from Pakista, think of the future and start breeding youngsters.
