"Been working really hard; would like to thank the entire management, coaching staff": Ahmed Shehzad

Ahmed Shehzad speaking after winning the MOM award for his 89 in the 3rd T20I against World XI:

Proud moment for you, you played a wonderful innings and became the first Pakistani batsman to hit 3 sixes on 3 consecutive balls.

"I was just trying to play according to the situation and my team's requirement. Maybe I failed to score big runs in the first two innings but we still had some good partnership that took us to the totals that we desired."

"Today I decided to stay till the end and back myself. If others can do it, so can I; why am I leaving on the 30s and 40s? So I tried to take it forward and stay till the end."

It was a good opening partnership as Fakhar Zaman and yourself rotated strike and put pressure on the opposition and then hit big shots. Do you combine well as a pair?

"I've been working really hard and would like to thank the entire management and coaching staff specially Mickey Arthur, Grant Flower and Steve Rixon. They've been with me through thick and thin, this is what you want from your management."

"I thanked my players for their support when I was not scoring runs. They showed their faith and their trust in me and that's what you sometimes need as a player. You need your teammates and management to be there for you."

Hope you enjoyed the series, it was great fun to watch you. These innings would mean a lot to you coming against a quality bowling attack?

"I would like to congratulate PCB and the forces who've been working hard day and night."

"We've been talking to the international players from the World XI and they've been praising the security and hospitality. A few of them were saying that they would like to come here again."

Just don't make too much selfies and you can become a good player 🤣

Hmm... would've been nice to hear his thoughts on opening with Fakhar, but Ahmed seemed too keen to ensure we knew how he struggled through "thick and thin". :usman

LAHORE: Opener Ahmed Shehzad said he felt relieved that he had regained the trust of his teammates and coaching staff with his destructive 89 off 55 balls that propelled Pakistan to victory in the third and final T20 of the Independence Cup.

Shehzad said he played the match with a special plan to stay longer at the crease to hunt runs and help build partnerships, and he was delighted to play his part in the team’s success against World XI.

“I made a commitment to myself to score maximum number of runs in today’s match and it was good to see that my plan worked out well and I played a fine knock and also got the support of fellow colleagues to produce partnerships to consolidate the total,” he said in his post-match comments after getting Man of the Match award for his innings which helped the team to beat World XI by 33 runs.

The opener said he was happy to have played a good innings which helped him to get back the trust of his coach and the team members.

“They (coach and the team members) supported me in my thick and thin and I am thankful to them for their trust in me,” he said.

The 25-year-old said Pakistan’s victory will further boost cricket in Pakistan.

“It is a young team which is putting up a good performance and I am happy to be a part of its achievement of winning the series,” he said.

Shehzad expressed gratitude for the World XI for visiting Pakistan and bringing back international cricket here.

He also thanked the Pakistan Cricket Board and the law-enforcing agencies for making the tour of World XI a success.

“We are confident that other teams will also visit Pakistan in near future to supplement the efforts of PCB for having international cricket in Pakistan,” said the opener.

To a question, he said he will put in more hard work to lift the level of his game to be a useful part of the Pakistan team.

“Today’s win was the victory of Pakistan cricket and it was possible due to the collective efforts of our team and our nation,” he said.

The victorious skipper Sarfraz Ahmed attributed the historic series win against World XI to team efforts.

“All the players worked really hard and led the team to title victory in the three-match series, which is a big achievement on part of this young side,” he said in his post-match comments after Pakistan beat the World XI 2-1 here on Friday night at the Gaddafi Stadium.

“I am very thrilled and delighted that we won in front of our crowd on our ground and this success has marked the return of international cricket in Pakistan,” said a visibly joyous Sarfraz.

He praised the superb batting of Shehzad and opener Fakhar Zaman for leading the team to a decent total which the opposition failed to chase.

The skipper said a visible improvement has been seen in players’ fitness and fielding, which was evident from the fact that five players of the World XI were run out.

“The credit of this positive change goes to our coaching and training staff, especially our coach Mickey Arthur and we are thankful to him for making our team balanced in all departments of the game,” Sarfraz said.

He also thanked the World XI for visiting and the Pakistan Cricket Board for arranging the tour, and the security forces for ensuring top security during the tour.

Afridi hit 4 consecutive sizes vs Harbhajan in Tests circa 2005-2006, seems like a factual inaccuracy in the OP article.

leave it to this guy to have 2-3 good games and make it sound like he single handedly led the team to a WC

He is eyeing captaincy now

In actuality he was in line to become T20 captain by end of 2014.

However, he fell at pods with the PCB soon after so that never materialized.

I guess if he becomes captain now - he would have come full circle!

lol why was he in line to become t20 captain by 2014

some fanboyz think he would have been captain after WC15 but wasnt made because of Waqar younis :)))

Lol this guy is savage.

"I played a fine knock "

He is the most narcissistic cricket player ever.

The exit of Afridi should be good for the guy now

It had been reported by various sources back in the end of 2014 and even by PP

Re-read what Sethi wrote. He said there was factionalism in the team as the likes of Afridi and Shehzad wanted to be captain. In fact Sethi ruled out the possibility of Shehzad becoming captain.

The other two links are just op-eds.

In short, the links provided do not support the view he was in line to become t20 captain. In fact, Sethi's interview suggests quite the opposite.

Lol this is useless

One is an op-ed by a fanbouy such as yourself

Second is by Mohammad Wasim who admits its a left field idea

Third is just Sethi saying what Shehzad wants and squatting the idea life a fly there and then only

So much for 'next in line'

What next? I get a few retweets vouching for my captaincy, get a friend to write an OpEd and I am in line to be Pakistan captain?

I am not convinced until he starts performing in the longer formats. Then we will see if he has addressed his dot ball problem.

Funnily enough all these "OpEd's" can out in all late 2014 and have disappeared since then. :13:

There must have been some buzz to these stories and behind the scene talks to generate these articles in the first place. As the idiom goes "there is no smoke without fire"

I think Shehzad's falling out with Waqar during the 2015 WC caused his captaincy push to be shelved there and then - otherwise Shehzad would have been the T20 captain during the 2016 WorldT20 and possibly even today.

If Shehzad continues to perform and maintains a positive attitude - there is no reason as to why he may not become first choice captain for the T20 squad. Esp considering the toll it takes on Sarfraz to captain all 3 formats, Sarfraz's own uncertain role in the T20 team and the lack of viable candidates who are less than 35 lol.

The ball is in Shehzad's court as to how he wants to shape his career now...

The ball has always been in his court.

He doesn't help himself by averaging 16 in T20I at a SR of 104 against top sides (12 at 90 in World T20s) or by batting at a SR of 72 in ODIs. The only format where he's actually kept up with the demands of the team is in Tests, albeit over a low sample size and without any challenging overseas tours.

There has to be some semblance of performance and consistency before a leadership role is considered.

This

as per msb Shehzad is young-ish so he is a captaincy candidate

btw i can even show threads for Sohaib Maqsood captaincy push

Theres no doubt his attitude has improved but one 89 odd does not take away games where he scores 20 off 40 which just sucks the life out of the batting and puts un due pressure on other batters. I don't know if I can trust him on the basis of this knock for him to continue in the future but nehow he lives on for now. Sharjeel loss is Ahmed Shehzad's gain at the end of the day.

shehzad has captained in domestic and he has been very good. maqsood has been a failure as captain and his fitness and performance is pathetic so he is unlikely to have a long international career which may well be over already

shehzad is young, fit and as i said he has done well as captain in domestic

if he keeps his behavior in check and can perform well there is no reason why he will not be among the leading candidates to replace sarfraz in the future

although at this point babar azam looks certain to be the next captain across all formats

Please stop conflating two different things. No one doubts he wanted the captaincy, but that is not the same thing as saying "he was in line to become t20 captain by 2014." Sethi outright rejected the possibility even then.

By your own admission, the fall-out with Waqar happened a whole year later so that wouldn't have made a difference.

I think captaincy ship has sailed for him

To even be considered a regular he will need good consistent performances over a whole year now. That is how much damage his eight years of mediocrity have done

I think the time is right to seriously start considering him for captaincy. Shahzad is younger than Sarfraz and for once, PCB should think about long-term planning. Added responsibility can be productive and can get the best out of you. Rohit Sharma is one great example.

I still remember Shahzad was given the responsibility of keeping the wickets in Hong Kong super sixes 2010 and he played an ATG knock against Australia in the final.

Now if keeping can make him play like that, imagine what captaincy will do to him :viv

I am not sure that we're ready for that level of greatness. :don

Sir looking at ur posts and the way u write them i always wanted to say a thing to u but i never gathered courage.... :akhtar

but today i am gonna say it.... I love you from the bottom of my heart... you believe or not
:salute

We got to keep it fair for our opposition as well...

Appointing Shehzad as captain might be bad for long term survival of cricket as it would put off non-Pakistanis from even taking up cricket due to the fear his captaincy and performances will spread.

I thought he gave a good interview. I sense a small change in his attitude and good on him if he is working hard. Thats all we want them to do. Work hard, listen to the coaches and hit some runs.

Yes it can seriously hurt cricket...
Also ICC has to make sure he doesn't give tips to SARFY...

Bas shoro ho gaye acting and makhan baazi.
But Pakistanis like this, Shezi is smart.

Almost 125 matches with performances only against minnows and soft runs but still Pakistanis think he is the next big thing. 125 matches kam hain?

Sir the problem is that during these 125 matches, we never in our minds had a thought of making him captain and wk... now that's we have got to know how DANGEROUS he can be if he is given these roles... why just waste time, PCB shud announce him as Captain across three formats and also make him wk...
This is only way by which Pakistan can become a cricketing SUPERPOWER... and gradually they will become football superpower, hockey superpower, kabaddi superpower, kho-kho superpower, gulli danda superpower...... and then NUCLEAR SUPERPOWER and thus SUPERPOWER in world.... geeez u never thought that way
