Former Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis spoke about his resignation for the first time since stepping down from the post, saying that he and Misbah decided to leave "before they got sacked."

"I had no justification to stay on [as bowling coach] when Misbah resigned," said Waqar Younis, as per a media report. "Before we got sacked, we decided to resign ourselves."

Younis said that the coronavirus pandemic and the toll it exacts on players and coaches also became a reason for both former coaches to step down from their roles.

Speaking about the change in leadership of the PCB, Younis said that whenever a new chairman takes over the affairs of the board, it brings with it a different team.

He dispelled speculation of having a hand in the team selection. "I never had any role in selecting the team," he said. "People always speculated that I had a role in deciding who plays and who doesn't."

Waqar Younis praised the World T20 squad selected by Pakistan, saying that all members of the squad were talented individuals. However, he said some players had not put up strong performances while others needed to work on their fitness.

"I am not in a position, at the moment, to criticise anyone," he said. "Shoaib Malik is the fittest athlete [in Pakistan cricket] at the moment while Azam Khan has a lot of talent."

Speaking about former captain Ramiz Raja, Waqar said he was the first PCB chairman who was fully aware of Pakistan's cricket situation.

He said that it is the PCB chairman's prerogative to appoint the national squad's captain. The ex-bowling coach also said that he did not have any hand in Sarfaraz Ahmed's removal from captaincy.

"Removing any player from the squad solely due to his age would be an unjustifiable act," he said.

He shot back at former Pakistan pacer Aqib Javed, saying that he should be the last person to talk about coaching.

"Talent comes from the first-class and domestic cricket. We were the ones who mentored Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain and Naseem Shah over the past two years," he added.

Waqar said that he would apply for a job with the PCB if he decided that was the way to go in the future.

Former Pakistan pacer Aqib Javed had earlier criticised Waqar Younis, advising him to "learn" coaching first.

"Whenever Waqar Younis quit coaching, he went back to commentating on cricket," Javed had said. "He does only two things--coaching and commentating. [As far as coaching goes] he hasn't learned that so I would say it's better if he focuses on learning how to coach [this time]," he had added.

The former bowler had shared his opinion on the resignations of Pakistani coaches who had stepped down from their roles after developing differences with the PCB over the selection of the squad for the T20 World Cup.

He had said that Waqar Younis coached the national squad five times over the last 15 years as either head coach or the bowling coach.

"Even a player doesn't make so many comebacks to the squad [as Waqar Younis did]," he had said. "But here, coaches are making comebacks."

Javed had said he was against the board's hiring process, wondering why people who were not professional coaches were appointed to coach the national squad.

Aqib javed? Seriously? The guy under who lahore qalanders came deadlast everytime?

The only psl franchise to have not won a psl ever...

Smart work Waqar. At least you can say that you were never sacked the next time you apply for a coaching role....with the PCB

KARACHI: Former Test cricketer and Pakistan coach Waqar Younis believes that his former teammate Wasim Akram should try a coaching role in the national team.

Speaking in ARY News’ show 11TH Hour, Waqar said Wasim is capable of doing a similar job which Ravi Shastri is doing in the Indian team.

“He [Wasim] has a good cricket mind and achievements as well as a coach in Pakistan Super League (PSL). Why shouldn’t he try for a coaching role if it comes in near future,” he said.

“I am serious, and I have talked about this with him a lot of time. He also has a good say in the cricket board and he is one of the biggest cricketing names in the country. See, what Ravi Shastri is doing in the Indian team, leading the coaching panel. Wasim can play the same role in Pakistan,” he added.

Meanwhile, Waqar also believes that there are so many other local names who can try for Pakistan team coaching as it is just a myth that only a foreign coach can do wonders.

“I believe that there are so many other names who can try for Pakistan team coaching. Let’s say, Aqib Javed, he has done coaching courses and is currently coaching Lahore Qalandars. Why doesn’t he try for the Pakistan team’s coaching,” he mentioned.

Waqar uttering too many sentences which contradict each other.
Basically he resigned cause he knew he was going to get the boot.

He is a patriotic man but just not competent enough to be a good coach despite being a great player. Should be the end of his coaching career in Pakistan(hopefully).

Was obvious this was the case. At least he was honest to admit it.

Full disclosure: I haven’t watched the interview yet

I don’t think it was honesty. Waqar is not very sharp when it comes to choosing his words. Look most of his other statements over the last few decades looks like he just ended up bumbling again.

Coward move by Waqar.

Rameez was never going to fire them on the eve of the WC. That would just be shooting himself in the foot. So they had no faith in winning the WC with the team they have developed over past 2 years, and ditched them.

Coward move by coward people. Waqar and Misbah have been serial losers all their careers. They brought the losers mentality into the team and we all saw how we went in a downward spiral.

Glad they are out. They should be cutting cakes for their resignation.

Well you can't really blame waqar and misbah .

The talent at their disposal is limited the players are simply not good enough to compete with the elite teams.

Apart from babar , rizwan , hasan ali , shaheen and maybe fakhar the squad is average

The squad isn’t quite diametrically opposite to what they had been cultivating over the last few years so the excuse of it being different doesn’t quite bode well.

In any case, the bumbling buffoon has spilled the beans.

With this statement, is he not throwing Misbah under the bus who was going around claiming it was due to the pandemic and being away from his family?

:)) imagine Naseem Shah being the highlight of your bowling coach stint

So should we, I'm going to treat the NZ series as a big celebration that we may finally be rid of Misbah for good after a near decade of mediocrity.

If that’s the case, why did they take the job in the first place?

I wouldn’t read the report too much as it is quoting a lot in the words of the journalists. I watched the whole show and Waqar didn’t exactly say what the headline said. He was implying that he’s been around the block a few times to understand that a new chairman always wants to do things in a new way.

He was trying as hard as possible to be non controversial and diplomatic, but Wasim badami cornered him pretty well.

Generally he spoke well and said the right things and you can’t doubt that he had good intentions. What disappointed me (but didn’t surprise me) was that he was still deluded enough to think he did a fantastic job. If you listen to what he said, he makes it sound like there was nothing wrong with our bowling for the last 2 years and it was the batting that let us down. He said he was happy how he guided the youngsters to improve.

He can lay claim to some improvement on shaheen. But Nasim Shah regressed, Abbas regressed, no mention of that. No mention also of the meltdown in the first test vs England last year which was a perfect example of the bowling letting us down.

Waqar, without Misbah is still our best option as bowling coach. He just paid the price for Misbah's sins .

Saw his full interview with masoomana Badami. Still deflecting blame.
He is saying he has made teenagers like Nasim/Musa/Shaheen/Hasnain into good bowlers.
Still Blamed Amir and Wahab for leaving red ball cricket.
Great bowler, but Waqar's cricketing acumen is questionable.

He is saying that the lower grass roots talent is not coming and he cannot fix that at high level. To bhai lower level per get involved and get things moving.

Waqar, without Misbah is still our best option as bowling coach. He just paid the price for Misbah's sins .

He is just as shameless as Misbah, possibly more with his latest failed tenure being his fifth coaching stint with Pakistan.

Each time after his sacking/resignation dramas, he runs back to comfort of the commentary box instead of learning from his mistakes or seeking out further coaching experience. He then re-applies for jobs knowing he'll get it just because of his name.

He has zero tactical awareness or man management skill as evident from his dismal captaincy stint in the early 2000s and openly disdains data-driven strategies. Not sure if he even has any coaching qualifications.

Thank god this dinosaur is out.

When I posted that they resigned to avoid sacking. Everyone was like no they were not told to go.

Pakistan are playing with freedom ever since Misbah and Waqar quit!

The bowlers are running with aggression and purpose. And the batsmen are playing their natural game and they all seem very comfortable as a team.

Once the toxic influences of Waqar and de facto captain Misbah were removed, even Babar's captaincy looks impressive

Conclusion : Foreign are necessary for a team like Pakistan to really flourish. Agree or disagree and why?

Agree. May be we should bring foreign coaches at domestic levels as well, Because Pakistan cricket is way behind compares to India, Eng, Aus, Nzl.

Babar Azam era could be the turning point for Pakistan cricket, if we let him develop as a leader and don’t go after him in case he fails on a big stage like WCs.

India did not remove Kohli despite Trophy less in many occasions but he has developed a fantastic culture and system for India to be a great team.

The coach is Saqlain. Foreigners are consultants.

I think the argument that Pakistan are playing more positively as a result of Misbah leaving is tentative at best.

Pakistani teams generally raise their game for a world cup, especially in this format. Furthermore, the UAE conditions suit us more than most teams and we do genuinely have some good bowlers.

Yes the team has performed magnificently thus far but we need to see where we are in a year to understand if we can pin it down to Misbah's influence.

Too early to tell. But I do see signs that the players and captain have been told by the PCB and the coaches that you go out there and play with freedom, without fear of any consequences or failure or result, we have your back. Babars excercising his authority as captain with the full backing of the PCB even if RR disapproved of Hafeez and Malik in the team.

Good signs in the long run

But they didn’t have the freedom to take Sharjeel as well, nor do they have the freedom to express their views about this

Pakistan is a team that needs motivation.

WC is a big stage and the team generally brings its A game.

I would be interested to see how our boys keep the intensity going post world cup.

Its because its the WC. It was the same in 2019, we had gathered a lot of steam and were looking great esp after the games against SA, NZ and Afghanistan but our earlier pathetic loss cost us a place in the semis due to NRR.

To have Waqar as a coach for so long is biggest failure of PCB management. He was a great bowler but a poor coach.

But they didn’t have the freedom to take Sharjeel as well, nor do they have the freedom to express their views about this

Sharjeel not needed. To hell with this fixer. Babar and Riz are our strength, and when they don't perform, we will look elsewhere

When you win, everything looks better.

Pakistan teams look different when it comes out from the chains of Misbah and Waqar;
called modern day slavery ..

I knew the team would play so much better once these toxic individuals had left. But the uplift in performance has been heartwarming.

I think the NZ and Eng factor has a lot to do with galvanising the team spirit as well.

Team has played exceptional so far, long may it continue!

Misbah was a bad influence on the team , not Waqar, he gave us Shaheen.

Shaheen was selected by Mickey Arthur for 2019 WC, where Pakistan fans were calling for him to be dropped before he turned it around in NZ game, has consistently played under 19 cricket for Pakistan + consistent performances at Lahore qalanders. Waqar has nothing to do with him.

Waqar selected Musa Khan. Being his coach at Islamabad united and fast tracked him into international cricket on a flat pitch vs AUS.
