Imran hits back at PM Shehbaz, dismisses allegation of army's vilification

PTI chairman Imran Khan on Monday hit back at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for accusing him of vilifying the army, saying that he was well aware of the importance of key state institutions.

During his speech in the National Assembly today, PM Shehbaz criticised Imran for his comments regarding state institutions the previous day and said that action should be taken against him within the ambit of the law and the Constitution.

The prime minister reiterated that if Imran's comments were not clamped down on then "nothing would be left" and there would be a crisis in the country. He lambasted the PTI chairman for taking the country in a direction where democracy could be eliminated.

Addressing a gathering of party leaders in Islamabad, Imran hit out at PM Shehbaz, saying: "He (Shehbaz) is a liar. He is unable to speak the truth. He says that Imran Khan vilified the army. Tomorrow, I have a rally in Jhelum where I will give you (Shehbaz) an answer about the extent to which I insulted and what you traitors did with the country."

He claimed that Shehbaz and his brother were Pakistan's "real Mir Sadiq and Mir Jafar", accusing them of transferring money earned through corruption abroad. "These are the people responsible for the current state of the country," he said.

He also hit out at the new government for saying it had come into power during tough times, saying in reality it was the PTI government which faced a tough time. "They had left behind a current account deficit of Rs20 billion," he said, while highlighting the achievements of his government.

Imran further said that "criminals" had now assumed positions of power and questioned how a country would run when such people were behind the helm.

Turning his guns on the Sharif family, he said that Nawaz used to badmouth the army when he fled abroad while Maryam was also doing the same.

"Look at who was happy after they came into power. India celebrated the most as they were coming and I was going," he said, adding that Nawaz also met Indian premier Narendra Modi in Kathmandu to conspire against the country and its institutions.

"My life and death belong to this country, I do not have any properties abroad. I don't have any bank accounts and I will not flee to London with my tail between my legs. We have to stay here and aware of the need for strong institutions [...]."

Imran said a "group of corrupt rulers" had assumed power with the help of foreign elements, adding Israel, India and those behind fueling Muslim sentiments through blasphemous caricatures were among the happiest on his exit.

The PTI chief said the incumbent rulers will face a strong public reaction wherever they visited. "There is extreme resentment among the public on what happened with the country and the toppling of the elected government."

He lamented that Donald Lu, a man with the rank of a secretary, was ordering the elected government to remove the prime minister. "I challenge them to send a similar letter to India and see reaction."

The PTI chairman stated that the "foreign plotters" knew PM Shehbaz was going to be the next premier, hence they assured Pakistan of "forgiving" the country once the change in power took place.

Imran said people would refer to the government leaders as "traitors and thieves". He also reiterated his demand for early elections and called upon citizens to be ready for the call to march to Islamabad after after May 20.

PTI launches mobile app to expand membership drive

Earlier in the day, Imran launched a mobile application as part of a campaign aimed at expanding the membership of the party.

Addressing the ceremony, he urged people to join his party using the "PTI Raabta" mobile application. Imran said his party wanted to make the most of the modern technology, adding “through our Raabta App, we will be able to collect data and engage with our supporters who can help us in ticket allocation too.”

He also conceded that the party suffered setbacks in the past through the wrong distribution of tickets.

PTI leader and former planning minister Asad Umar on Sunday claimed that no foreign country was willing to offer support to the incumbent government, saying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif returned "empty-handed" from trips seeking to secure financial support to prop up Pakistan's ailing economy.

PM Shehbaz and members of his cabinet had embarked on their first foreign trip to Saudi Arabia since coming to power. During his three-day visit, he met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other officials.

A joint statement at the conclusion of the trip said the two countries agreed to discuss extending the term of a $3 billion loan to help Pakistan's new government tide over the prevailing economic crisis.

PM Shehbaz later went to the UAE, following which a joint statement said the two countries expressed their desire to strengthen "bilateral economic cooperation".

Late last month, the new government also resumed talks with the IMF to revive its stalled programme, with negotiations being led by Finance Minister Miftah Ismail. In a talk at the Atlantic Council, he said he agreed with a key demand of the IMF to remove fuel subsidies — instituted by the PTI. “They've talked about removing the subsidy on fuel. I agree with them,” Ismail had said.

He had also blamed the PTI for "ruining the economy".

Weeks later, the government has appeared to be reluctant on doing away with the costly subsidies, which is estimated to haemorrhage cash to the tune of another Rs75 billion over the next fortnight.

In his presser today, Asad Umar said: "No countries including China, Saudi Arabia, UAE — even the International Monetary Fund — are giving money to Pakistan."

He quoted experts as saying that the situation in Pakistan was bleak and it was just "weeks away from a Sri Lanka-like situation".

Saudi Arabia is finalising the extension of the kingdom's $3 billion deposit to Pakistan, Saudi Minister of Finance Mohammed al-Jadaan told Reuters.

"We are currently finalising extending the $3 billion deposit to Pakistan," he said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Last year, Saudi Arabia deposited $3 billion in State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to support the foreign exchange reserves.

Jadaan did not offer further details, but on May 1 the two countries said in a joint statement that they would discuss the possibility of supporting the deposit by extending its term "or through other options."

Pakistan is in dire need of external finances, hurt by high inflation, reserves declining to as low as less than two months' of imports, and a fast-weakening currency.

Jadaan said Pakistan was an important ally and the kingdom would stand behind the South Asian nation.

Uncertainty over the revival of an International Monetary Fund programme has compounded volatility in the economy and markets amid a political crisis since a new government took over last month from ousted prime minister Imran Khan.

The IMF is likely to conclude ongoing talks over a 7th review in Doha.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) did not trust Pakistan because the previous government had gone back on its agreement with the institution.

Addressing a meeting of his party's senators in Islamabad, the prime minister said the PTI-led government should not have agreed to the terms of the Fund if it had issues with it, adding that once an agreement was signed, it should have been enforced.

The premier said the terms of the agreement with the IMF had been agreed upon, expressing the hope that matters would be settled within the next few days. However, he warned that the situation would not improve overnight once a deal was signed.

"We have to strengthen our financial position," he said.

He is already one of the best PM's of Pakistan in my eyes because he can see without wearing green tinted glasses. He recognises the actual issues Pakistan is facing and that's that 36 percent of our population lives below the poverty line and we have a food problem.

Rather than Imran who would hold 3 press conferences every day talking about how Kashmir was being brutalized by Indian forces. Shehbaz atleast recognised the elephant in the room. Forget war and conflict, atleast ensure your own population has food to put on the table.

I would say 36% population under the poverty line, would happily listen to Imran's lecture on Kashmir 3 times a day, rather than facing this inflation which some how indicates to you that Shahbaz Shareef actually cares for the poor people.

By the way, did you notice $20 Billion reserves left by IK were wiped down to $9 Billion in a matter of 50 days under SS?

Even friendly countries ‘fatigued’ by our aid seeking: PM Shehbaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: Prime Mini*ster Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday presented a dismal picture of the country’s economy and regretted that friendly countries had started looking at Pakistan as a country that was always asking for money.

“Today, when we go to any friendly country or make a phone call, they think that we have come [to them] to beg for money,” the prime minister regretted while add*ressing a lawyers’ convention.

PM Sharif said the country’s economy was already facing a ‘challenging situation’ before the floods, whi*ch had made it more ‘complicated’. He said Pakistan was on the verge of ‘economic default’ when he assumed power in April, and the coalition government, through its hard work, had saved the country from default and “to some extent controlled the economic instability”.

Admitting that inflation was ‘at its peak’, the prem*ier indirectly blamed the pre*vious Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government for this phenomenon. He alleged that the previous rulers had violated the agre*e*ment with the Interna*tio*nal Monetary Fund (IMF), compelling the incu*mbent government to agree on tough conditions. The IMF had even threatened withdrawal of its progra*mme if the agreed conditions were not met, he added.

Mr Sharif said even sma*l*ler economies had surpassed Pakistan, “and we have been wandering for the past 75 years carrying a begging bowl”. There were countries in the region whose GDP was lower than Pakistan’s growth, but currently they were far ahead in terms of export, he told lawyers.

“Where does Pakistan stand today after 75 years? This is a pinching question … We are moving in a circle all the time,” said PM Shehbaz, while declaring that they were in a ‘now or never’ situation. He said the country had the potential but ‘there is a lack of will to do’.

The prime minister warned of a possible gas crisis in the coming winter, stating that he had been struggling to arrange gas before the advent of winter season. He said the rains and floods had played unprecedented havoc in the country, adding that such climate-induced catastrophe had perhaps not been witnessed anywhere in the world.

Earlier, he distributed allotment letters among senior lawyers for residential plots in the housing project and carried out balloting of plots for federal government employees.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said that Pakistan should not be forced to go out with a “begging bowl” to rich polluting nations after severe floods devastated the country.

In an interview with British publication The Guardian, the premier said that he would be seeking “climate justice” from the international community.

PM Shehbaz warned that Pakistan faced an unprecedented crisis of health, food security and internal displacement after the “apocalyptic” monsoon rains put a third of Pakistan under water.

He reiterated that it was the “responsibility of the developed countries, who caused these emissions, to stand by us”, as Pakistan is only responsible for 0.8% of global carbon emissions.

“I’ve never seen this kind of devastation, inundation and suffering of our people in my lifetime. Millions have been displaced, they have become climate refugees within their own country”, he said.

According to the prime minister, the pledged funds and aid from the global community were “not enough”.

“The enormity of this climate-induced catastrophe is beyond our fiscal means,” he stated, adding that the gap between the nation’s needs and resources was widening by the day.

The damage cost was approximated to be between $30 billion and $35 billion but Shehbaz said the figures were “a rough estimate, it could be more”, with more than 30,000 kilometres of roads destroyed along with bridges, railways and power lines, as well as crops washed away.

He emphasised that he was talking about “climate justice”.

“We are not blaming anybody, we’re not casting allegations, what we are we saying is this is not of our making but we have become a victim. Should I be asked to cast my appeal into a begging bowl? That is double jeopardy. That’s unjust, unfair.”

PM Shehbaz said that while he was grateful for the “very touching words and statements” of foreign leaders including US President Joe Biden and UN chief Antonio Guterres, “practical demonstration of these statements into action” was more important.

“While they are doing a very good job, and we appreciate it, this is not enough. They must come forward with a far better and a far bigger plan to rescue us and rehabilitate us and put us back on our footing”, he said.

The premier highlighted the unfulfilled promise made by wealthy nations over a decade ago to commit $100 billion a year to a climate fund for less developed nations for the climate emergency.

“Where’s that money?” he asked, claiming that it was high time those countries were questioned and reminded to fulfil their pledges.

“We’re not asking about reparations,” he said.

“I don’t think talk of reparations is proper at this point in time. What I am saying is that they should take notice of the situation, take responsibility and act speedily before it’s too late, before the damage becomes irreparable – not just for Pakistan, but for the world”.

Commenting on the critiques of his government’s flood relief efforts, PM Shehbaz conceded that “because of the vastness of the problem, we have not been able to do the job so far as it should have been done”.

“Look at the distances alone. Some of these areas were cut off completely”, he maintained.

He was adamant that the Benazir income support programme (BISP) being used to disburse the flood relief funds was known for its transparency.

Debt relief

The prime minister insisted that with billions in upcoming foreign debt repayments, and the billions more now in flood damages, Pakistan had averted default through the IMF deal, and would still be able to service the rest of its foreign debt payments.

“No way. We will not default”, he said.

PM Shehbaz confirmed his government would be talking to “everybody” – including China and the Paris Club – about the possibility of foreign debt moratorium.

“What we are asking for is fiscal space but not through the burden of more debt”, he added.

However, the newly reappointed Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in a separate interview said that he was “reluctant” to turn to the Paris Club, a collective of nations that helps countries struggling with debt.

“If the global community cooperates, donates and helps with the reconstruction, then I think we can avoid it”, said Dar.

“Going to the Paris Club is not a very comfortable feeling so I hope we will not have to resort to it”, the finance minister said.

PAKISTAN, IMF TALKS LIKELY TO BE DELAYED FURTHER

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s formal talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the 9th quarterly review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) are likely to be delayed further amid authorities’ demand to impose additional taxes, ARY News reported quoting sources.

State Minister for Revenue Dr Aisha Ghaus Pasha also confirmed the development, saying the talks were originally due in the last week of October but kept on delaying following gaps in estimates by two sides.

She further said that IMF was demanding to impose additional taxes and pushing for sticking to committed tax-to-GDP ratio of at least 11pc.

“Pakistan’s economic growth rate may fall short of the target by more than 2% due to the recent floods,” she explained and ruled out the possibility of imposing additional taxes.

Earlier, Ayisha Ghous Pasha had said that the IMF was informed about hike in expenditures due to unprecedented flooding in the country.

“The emergency and available resources were utilized to tackle the flood situation,” state minister said. Pakistan will also demand additional funds from the IMF,” minister said.

The monetary fund has asked for a report with regard to the targets that could not be achieved due to floods, sources added.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said the government had “no other option” but to implement the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

He regretted that if they wanted to give any subsidy in any sector, they had to go to the IMF, 'which is a factor and a painful reality'.

He said the coalition government never wanted to transfer the burden of price hikes. In the past, the PTI government blatantly breached the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Meanwhile, the prime minister said that they had devised a plan to immediately convert all the federal government entities’ buildings to solar power by April next year in order to slash a huge chunk out of the country’s costly fuel import bill hovering around $27 billion.

Unveiling details, the prime minister said that the procedures for conversion to solar power should be fast-tracked as they had set April 2023 as the timeline for the implementation of this plan.

In a bid to break the deadlock, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday made a telephonic call to International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and urged her to relax conditions regarding increase in energy prices and imposition of more taxes.

The telephonic contact was made four days before a face-to-face meeting between the prime minister and the IMF head that is expected to take place on the sidelines of the Geneva Conference aimed at seeking relaxations from the global lender.

Sources told The Express Tribune that the prime minister urged the IMF managing director to review the condition about imposition of new taxes. He also sought relaxation in the demand to increase electricity prices to compensate for the deviation of around Rs500 billion from the annual circular debt management plan.

PM Shehbaz vows to use ‘every penny’ of Geneva donations for prosperity of flood-hit people

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday vowed that the government would utilise “every penny” of donations pledged at a donors’ conference in Geneva for prosperity and rehabilitation of flood-hit people.

His media talk comes after Pakistan raised over $10 billion in pledges from donor countries in Geneva.

Earlier this week, international donors committed to give Pakistan a huge sum of donations exceeding $10bn to help it recover from last year’s devastating floods. Officials from some 40 countries as well as private donors and international financial institutions had gathered for the meeting, co-hosted by Islamabad and United Nations.

Flanked alongside the federal cabinet members, the premier began the press conference by highlighting that the Geneva conference proved to be a “success” for Pakistan.

90% Geneva pledges are loans, not aid
Finance minister spills the beans; revival of loan talks with IMF not in sight

As the international community has given over $8 billion or 92% of the total pledges in project loans for the flood-hit areas at a donors conference in Geneva, the government still does not have a firm date for the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) visit due to differences over the mini-budget and increase in energy tariff.

The proceedings of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s news conference at the PM’s House on Wednesday confirmed that if the government is keen to revive the IMF programme, it will have to bite the bullet by imposing new taxes and increasing electricity and gas tariff.

Where the “unprecedented pledges” of $9.7 billion have given a clarity on the $16.3 billion reconstruction plan of the flood-affected areas, the government still seems struggling to address other pressing issues in hand -- how to avoid default.

While addressing the news conference, both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar could not announce a date for the staff-level visit of the IMF to begin negotiations for the 9th review of the $6.5 billion bailout package.

Shehbaz, Bilawal ‘begging’ for country, says Shujaat
PML-Q chief defends govt, urges critics to join in efforts to offer solutions to people's problems

PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has censured the critics for calling Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto “beggars”, saying both were “begging” for the sake of the country.

In a statement, Shujaat chastised the opposition for terming Shehbaz and Bilawal as beggars.

“They [PM Shehbaz and FM Bilawal] are begging for the rehabilitation of flood victims and economic development,” he said.

“We will also participate with them in this good deed,” he added, asking the “critics” to take measures for the solution of people’s problems.

PM Shehbaz Sharif had co-hosted an international donor conference in Geneva along with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The conference brought together governments, leaders from the public and private sectors and civil society to support the people and the government of Pakistan to deal with the challenge of post-flood reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Pakistan secured over $10 billion in pledges from international financial institutions, donor agencies and development partners for the rehabilitation, recovery and reconstruction of flood-affected areas.

The word on the market is that the biggest impediment is defense expenditure. IMF wants Pakistan to revise the budget & take a big haircut to defense over the next 3 years, but Pakistan is dithering on that citing Afghanistan. IMF is however not in any mood to budge on any of its demands with Pakistan’s past poor fiscal maintenance record.

These guys dont know the basics of politics.

Why would they need to go in person to pay respects to Erdogan?

It would be suicide for Erdogan to host a political visit when the country is in ruins.

It's just stupidity to even thinks the Turks would want or need the Pakistani pm at this time.

There is nothing strange about it. If some organization is running in to huge losses like the Pakistani economy than any monetary firm that is assessing and auditing the finances will make recommendations based on the results.

Not rubbing salt in wounds here but even if an alternative model might buy time and help in the long run, any deal made right now will be without leverage. When you don’t have leverage then any powerful entity will pen a deal more advantageous to them. Being accountable to IMF vs Being accountable to China well I don’t think it’s that tough to guess which is the lesser devil.

‘Difficult times’: PM Shehbaz says Pakistan has established a Rs10bn relief fund for quake-hit Turkiye

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Friday that the federal government has established a Rs10 billion relief fund for earthquake-hit Turkiye and urged people across Pakistan to “generously donate” for the victims.

Speaking at a ceremony at an airport in Lahore, from where relief goods are being sent to Turkiye, the premier said that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will purchase relief items — such as tents, clothes, blankets and dry food — from the fund and dispatch them to Turkiye.

Officials and medics said 17,674 people had died in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey and 3,377 in Syria from Monday’s tremor, bringing the confirmed total to 21,051.

In a media talk alongside Turkish Consul General to Lahore Emir Ozbay, PM Shehbaz said that thousands of people in Turkiye and Syria had died in the deadly earthquake, while millions were rendered homeless.

“The destruction of such magnitude is less seen where parents have lost their children and infants have become orphans […] there are dreadful visuals everywhere,” he noted.

However, the prime minister asserted that under the leadership of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the people of Turkiye would emerge out of the crisis. “And so will our brothers in Syria.”

The PPP has been a cult since the death of bhutto. Its hard core followers are beyond reasoning. They will follow Bilawal and then his offspring if he is capable. They are irrelevant to the future of Pakistan. They just haven't figured that one out yet.

Shehbaz’s ‘atta-stunts’ can’t fool nation: Pervaiz

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said Shehbaz Sharif cannot fool the people with ‘atta-stunts’, he wants to make the nation a beggar like him, the government cannot buy people’s integrity and votes by giving them a bag of flour.

Vehari NA-157 candidate Chaudhry M Ayub Bandisha, Chaudhry Ejaz Ahmed Warraich, Syed Noor Muhammad Shah, former Tehsil President Vehari Chaudhry M Ghazanfar Ilyas Bandisha, Ahsan Ayub Bandisha, former Vice Chairman Complaint Cell Vehari, Amir Saeed Rawn Advocate and Sarwar Butt, and Secretary General Circle Kabaddi Federation, called on former chief minister and Central President Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at his residence here on Monday.

In every city, a precious life is lost every day in a flour line, but Shehbaz Sharif still does not stop using tricks, there is nothing but crying in the letter of Shehbaz Sharif to the President of Pakistan, Pervaiz said and added Imran Khan has given the nation awareness to live with honour and dignity, Imran Khan’s historic Jalsa has overpowered the government, Imran Khan has reached the victory stand, trials, arrests and violent actions are useless now.

He said PDM wants to push the country towards martial law to avert Imran Khan from coming back to power, but the PDM government’s desire to impose martial law in the country will never be fulfilled. He said that Pakistan’s domestic and foreign benefactors around the world are advising Pakistan to hold elections as soon as possible.

Now even institutions understand that the current economic conditions cannot afford any adventure. There is no solution to the political and economic crisis, after the election, the politics of PMLN and PDM will be buried in Punjab, he said.

Woman, man die in bid to get free flour
First stampede took place in Sahiwal, and the second in Rahim Yar Khan

A woman and a man died and several others were injured in stampedes at flour distribution points in different cities on Tuesday while people staged protests against the government for badly handling flour distribution.

The first stampede took place in Sahiwal when a large number of people showed up to get free flour with women also standing in long queues. As the time passed on, the crowd became impatient that caused a stampede with everyone trying to get flour bag.

As a result, one woman was killed while 46 others were injured. The injured were shifted to the DHQ Hospital where one of them is stated to be in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, the Sahiwal deputy commissioner and the district police officer reached the spot. There were also reports of police baton-charge on the flour seekers. When contacted, PRO to DPO Sahiwal Inspector Asif Sarwar denied the allegation of baton-charge.

In Rahim Yar Khan, a 73-year-old man was trampled in a bid to get free flour while several others were injured. Anwar Deen died at the Ayamin Gate.

In Jhang, women staged a protest against the alleged torture on an old woman at a flour disbursement point at the Government Graduate Boys’ College. The women alleged that a discriminatory attitude was being adopted by the staff while disbursing flour bags. They said caretaker Punjab CM Mohsin Naqvi had promised to provide them with flour bags in an honourable way, but the situation at the disbursement centres was otherwise.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that Pakistan had fulfilled all the conditions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), adding "the global lender has no excuse to not give a go-ahead to the deal".

Addressing a ceremony after reviewing the construction work on six-lane overhead bridge at Imamia Colony railways crossing Shahdra N-5, the prime minister said that we got a “broken agreement from the IMF”.

PM Shehbaz referred to the terms of the global lender for seeking loan agreement and said that the government made every effort to meet them.

They even sought bilateral financial support from friendly nations including China, who acknowledged Pakistan's problems and provided a rollover of $2 billion loan besides returning back previous debt amount paid back by Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has told the lower house of the parliament that Saudi Arabia has provided another $2 billion to Pakistan in order to bolster the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

“Showing great kindness, Saudi Arabia has provided us another $2 billion while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also promised to give us $1b,” Shehbaz said on Monday while speaking on the floor of the Nation Assembly.

The premier said the country has met all conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) but admitted that the situation of the country’s foreign currency reserves was critical.

PM Shahbaz also paid tribute to the Mufti Abdul Shakoor, federal minister for religious affairs, who died in a car accident in Islamabad on April 15.

He said the deceased minister was a honest and kind human being. “All the credit for making arrangements for pilgrimage [to Makkah] in seamless manner last year went to Mufti Shakoor,” he said.
