I should have made this post a while ago but better late than never. As a wrestling fan, I am very thrilled to see that Ben "Funky" Askren has made his way eventually into the UFC.
MMA fans in Asia know Askren as the ONE Welterweight Champion (ONE is the equivalent of the UFC in Asia). You may want to check his fights against Bakhtiyar Abbasov and Nikolay Aleksakhin.
Askren's current record is 19-0 with 1 no contest.
He is a great addition to UFC - him being a terrific grappler, has a funny personality and his trash talk is actually really hilarious without crossing any family, religious lines.
You could mistake him for some nondescript dude who just hopped off his la-z-boy chair after chugging a can of beers with his dad bod.
But to quote a champion like Daniel Cormier - if Askren gets on top of you - you are not getting out. Tyron Woodley suggested that Askren is like a Boa constrictor.
At UFC 235 - the ever dangerous Robbie Lawler ran a freight truck through Askren's face and lesser mortals would have given up but not Askren who eventually got Robbie in a bulldog choke in the very first round in a controversial stoppage.
Wrestling fans like me are salivating over the possibility of a Khabib v Askren match up - which may actually not happen since both of them fight in different weight categories. One slender hope is if Dana White approves a 165 lb weight category.
Anyway I hope to be able to track his progress in UFC on this page. His next match up is with Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239 which is actually a great card also featuring Jon Jones, Amanda Nunes, Holly Holm, Junior Dos Santos and Francis Ngannou.
