Should have stayed away from the booze, like Moeen Ali. Hope it's nothing serious.

Seems like a bar fight after a night of boozing.

Not really surprised when it comes Stokes, are you?

Bet it was Marlon Samuels' fault.

Arrested on suspicion of causing ABH. Whoa!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/41399632

England all-rounder Ben Stokes was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm after a nightclub incident in Bristol early on Monday.

He will not be available for England's fourth one-day international against West Indies on Wednesday, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced.

Team-mate Alex Hales, who was with Stokes, will also miss the match and has returned to Bristol to help police.

Stokes was held overnight after the team's victory in the third ODI.

The 26-year-old Test vice-captain was arrested after an incident at about 02:35 BST at the city's Mbargo club which left another man needing hospital treatment for facial injuries.

England are due to name their squad on Wednesday for the Ashes tour of Australia.

"Selectors have been instructed to select the Ashes squad based on form and fitness as they normally would do," said England director of cricket Andrew Strauss.

The team went 2-0 up in the best-of-five ODI series with a 124-run victory on Sunday.

Statement from Avon and Somerset Police

"We were called to a disorder in Queens Road, Clifton, at around 2.35am on Monday [25 September].

"A 27-year-old man was found to have suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatment.

"A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and has since been released under investigation.

"We'd appeal for anyone who was in the Clifton Triangle area in the early hours of Monday who saw any part of this incident, to call Investigations on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5217218578."

Statement from England and Wales Cricket Board

"Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will not be available for tomorrow's one-day international match against West Indies at The Oval.

"Stokes was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning, 25 September, following an incident in Bristol.

"He was held overnight and released under investigation - without charge - late on Monday and will not join the team in London.

"Hales, who was with Stokes on Sunday night, did not train this morning and has returned voluntarily to Bristol today to help police with their enquiries.

"You will understand that we cannot offer further detail at this stage but will provide any updates when we can."

Actual Bodily Harm. Somewhere between Assault (an attack or intimidation that may have no physical or long lasting effect or consequences) and Grievous Bodily Harm (ison) in which you have hurt someone quite badly & possibly permanently.

Sounds like he has punched into someone & from what other reports are saying- has broken his hand again. So karma is served. Does he want to be a good cricketer or a hard man?

Once (punching the locker) is forgivable. Now he just starts to look really stupid & letting people down.

Not the first time he's broken his hand over something entirely unnecessary. Last time it was a locker he broke it on. Seems a bit too arrogant these days.

Ben Chokes strikes again - messing things up the day before the Ashes squad is all set to be announced.

What is ABH?

Actual Bodily Harm

Section 47 of the Offences Against the Persons Act 1861 creates the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

ABH is an either way offence which means it can be tried in either the Magistrates Court or the Crown Court. Some forms of ABH are considered more serious than others depending on the harm caused.

The maximum sentence for a single count of ABH in the Magistrates is 6 months. The maximum sentence in the Crown Court is 5 years imprisonment. ABH may also be charged in a racially aggravated form which attracts the higher maximum sentence of 7 years.

England's best laid plans have just been thrown in the garbage. Now they need another batsman at #6, lose their fourth pacer, probably have to pick a new vice-captain and deal with the Aussies sledging them about this whole ordeal.

What an idiot and this is the England Test Vice Captain. Derailing his career despite all the oppourtunities which are being given to him because he rather be a hot head, management should have known better.

Yet another guy who became famous too soon to handle it...

Will lose his vice captaincy, future captaincy chances. Will also be walking on thin ice with the ECB. I think they have had to pay enough due to his inability to handle his emotions on the pitch. Now they have been rocked so hard off the pitch because of this incident.

2nd biggest throw away this year after Sharjeel's fixing.

Is there something in you when you're a left handed batsman that makes you want to go on a self destructive spree?

England is not like Pak. Strauss has already come out stating the ashes squad will be based on cricketing merit alone, meaning he will not be dropped. They will support him and rehabilitate him back into the game and all will be forgotten after his next century. Flintoff was similar before him.

Hopefully Moeen gets the vice captaincy now :yk

If Stokes does get stripped of it presumably Broad, Anderson or maybe Bairstow would be next in line. We should probably wait to see the full story here though which I assume will come out.

Actual bodily is quite serious

Not quite sure about UK, but Australia is still Common Law and here it is an injury that is physically visible. People can go to jail for up to 7 years in most jurisdiction

Last I read Stokes was still under investigation

He clearly has issues.

Every time he is on the field, he is looking for a fight.

I'm all for players being aggressive, but this guy overdoes the stupidity.

he is turning into another kp for england.

the moment he is past his prime they will dump him for good.

Flintoff is a better comparison, at least Stokes still gets along with his teammates and afaik KP didn't have any legal issues.

Will make the Ashes squad but not as vice-captain. If he gets a conviction (which will take a while, but seems likely) he could be refused entry to overseas countries and therefore not be a touring player in future. Silly lad!!

England cementing themselves as the new Pakistan. Unpredictable results, frequent batting collapses and needless off-the-field scrapes (KP, Ballance, Stokes).

.

Since his county days, Stokes has had a problem with excessive late-night drinking and even physical altercations.

He's more than a silly lad. He's a complete idiot. He has attitude problems like an out of control teenager. He is a father but constantly acts like a participant on the Jeremy Kyle show.

His previous police caution gave him a criminal record but he has still managed to travel. As has Mohammed Amir. So I'm sure he will be fine to travel in the future. More importantly, will he grow up after this incident? I think that's unlikely.

Seems to have aggression issues.

BUT sometimes you're provoked into hitting someone. Fans (or haters) can be idiots especially in a setting such as that.

Still Stokes has a lot more to lose and should have been smarter than that.

And now the Ashes squad leaked. :)) :ibutt

Marlon Samuels must be loving this

Also if the rumours are true and he tried to king hit someone than Stokes is fortunate this didn’t happen in Australia, he would probably be facing a mandatory sentence

The guy needs counselling and some psych analysis. You need the aggression on the field and sometimes off the field too but one needs to know his limits.

I respect that some players are naturally aggressive but Ben Stokes is a really unlikable character. He's always out looking for a fight with everyone and he really needs to tone it down. He should definitely be stripped of Vice Captaincy as he is not someone who is a role model as a person. Yes, he may be a fantastic cricketer but he is not someone players should be looking up to.

This is what needs to be done to Stokes:

giphy.gif

Instead, the ECB have rewarded him with a place in the Ashes squad :irfan

London - Ben Stokes must "grow up" or risk damaging his international career, former England captain Nasser Hussain has warned after the star all-rounder was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm

The Durham player was on Wednesday included in England's 16-man squad for the Ashes tour of Australia despite being dropped for the fourth one-day international against the West Indies at The Oval following his arrest in Bristol early on Monday.

England national selector James Whitaker told the BBC that Stokes, who was released without charge but is under investigation, would remain in his position of vice-captain to Test skipper Joe Root.

But ex-England skippers Hussain and Michael Vaughan say the 26-year-old needs to take responsibility for his actions, especially with the high-profile Ashes tour looming.

"Ben Stokes has the world at his feet and is well on the way to becoming a very special - not to mention very well-rewarded - cricketer," Hussain wrote in the Daily Mail . "But he cannot keep flirting with the self-destruct button while getting himself into such damaging scrapes.

"It has reached the point where it could damage the career of a potentially great England cricketer. He has to learn to walk away or not put himself into an environment where this can happen."

"Ben Stokes has to grow up," he added.

"The bottom line is, for all the advice and support he will be receiving right now, it's down to him. He just has far too much going for him to throw it all away."
Stokes has found himself in trouble in the past.

He was arrested and cautioned in 2011 for obstructing police on a night out and sent home from an England Lions tour to Australia in 2013 for flouting a ban on late-night drinking, Vaughan believes Stokes must learn to be streetwise off the field.

"Ben Stokes can't say he was not warned," he wrote in the Daily Telegraph . "People have said to him, 'There is only one person who can ruin your career and that is you. Nobody else.'

"In time we could be describing him as a cricketing genius. But he has to understand that if he wants to be a superstar, and go over to India, earn huge IPL contracts and keep them, he has to be careful off the field.

"On the field he is a streetwise cricketer. But he is not streetwise off the pitch and that could be his downfall. I am hoping this is his lesson."

Alec Stewart , another former England captain said "massive responsibility" comes with leadership.

"He just needs to learn and learn fast," he told BBC radio. "He's had a couple of hiccups when he was younger. Now he's just got to make sure we're not talking about this again in six months or even six years.

"There are some sympathies with Ben. He is a high-profile sportsman, he will be recognised, there will always be someone who wants a cheap shot but he has to make sure he reacts in the right way."

If Botham is a bigot, why was Viv Richards Best Man at his wedding and Godfather to his kids?

Anyway Stokes has been rather silly again. He is our most naturally able player since Botham and is in danger of losing his career. A conviction for ABH might cause trouble at Customs.

Things don't look good for him. The video shows stokes aggressively attacking those pack of guys.

Did anyone see that video? He will be convicted . If he is first time offender he might avoid jail.

Just watched it. It wasn't a case of self defence or even one punch. Stokes is having a real tear up with more than one person. Even when the people are trying to walk away, he is continuing. Clearly intoxicated and angry he could have really hurt someone. At one point he missed with his punch and fell to the ground.

It all depends on the judge, he could be looking at a few weeks in Jail or community service. I think because he is high profile, he will will be spared jail.

Silly lad.

Really puzzling, why Stokes as one of the most high-profile players in the world, let alone England wants to act like a scruff in the public domain.

Only the first punch was somewhat justifiable.

The guy was going after his friend (quite pathetically I might add) but still that's an argument Stokes can make.

BUT everything after that initial punch looks quite bad for Stokes.

He had a little thing going on about Himself .... and you mix that with alcohol .... and you have an explosive situation !!! I hope it works out for him, and England in the end, surely a good player but someone needs to talk to this guy and align his head !!!!!!

Are England really going to send this guy to the Ashes? What does that say about standards?

Warner took a single, unsuccessful swing vs Joe Root in a bar and he was sent packing back to the Australia A tour & missed the first 2 Ashes Tests as punishment.

Sadly mate our batting lineup at the moment is so bad that they will still consider playing him. That said Strauss is a ruthless enough chieftain that if this continues to escalate as expected then Stokes will be pulled before Brisbane.

Footage makes Stokes really look like a thug.

Heard Bayliss wants Stokes to remain vice captain - surely that is entirely untenable. England needs to enforce discipline here otherwise you create a culture where players think they can do whatever as long as they are star players.

He must tour Australia, the Aus supporters cannot be denied the opportunity to remind him.

Send him to Australia. The crowd and players will easily get under his skin. Some may even bring postcards of this fight video. Would be fun seeing stokes weeping in the middle of ground. Pathetic Person

Watch the whole video, he only started fighting after the guy swung beer bottle at his friends' head.

Footage makes Stokes really look like a thug.

Someone tried to bottle his mate over the head and Stokes fought them off. If this goes to trial and I was a juror I couldn't find him Guilty on this evidence.

I told everyone yesterday to wait until things became clearer.

BUT now that the video is out...

1) It was an incredibly weak attempt by the other guy
2) Stokes went well past the point where he can defend his actions

He acted like a total buffoon.

Athletes have so much to lose and they still put themselves in such situations. You see it all the time in North American sports.

Well the guy he decked didn't throw a single punch. Not to mention Hales bolts when the bottle is swung only to return when the bottle wielding man is down and proceeds to kick him in the head multiple times. He's not in the clear either.

That footage does not look good

In the court of law it’s gonna be interstesting, doesn’t look like he physically started it but the other guy was clearly backing away and Stokes was going after him. At face value it doesn’t seem to fit the standards of proportionality

In the ECB’s court though I think Stokes is a dead man walking

:))) :))) :)))

The bias in this post is seeping through my computer screen. Anyone who watches that video is convicting your normal man on the street.

1. The guy he sent to the hospital was not the guy with the bottle. It seemed like his friend who wanted to help diffuse the situation. Watch the video again clip by clip. Stokes first assaults the guy with the bottle then goes after the friend.

2. Regardless of a possible criminal conviction or not, what's at stake is his future with the ECB. This is not a first for Stokes. Do the ECB want such a character to be associated with the Gentleman's game? I don't think Strauss would.

I think the ECB and Strauss will provide Stokes with excellent character references and unlimited tickets to test matches for the judge so he gets a small fine and a slap on the wrist (not the one with the broken finger). A vicious assault on the public is not going to hinder the England cricket team.

"Lack of trust" in KP = Permanent Removal

Actual Bodily Harm by Stokes = Enjoy a spot in the Ashes squad

:)) :))

Was the guy he went after who was backing away the guy who tried to bottle his mate?

If things went to trial David Warner on Root would have been laughed out of court.

watching the video a couple more times

1. The guy that got floored was the one who first struck with the bottle , however he was backing off and put his hands up when he basically got sucker punched

2. Hales was kicking the bottle guy in the head at least 5 times when Stokes first went after him. It's only towards the end that Hales seems to attempt to break it up

aww poor Ben, he is so fragile after decking someone who was backing off and had his hands up

I agree with Gilly he has to come to Australia, this will be amazing
