These are my best xi's for pre-1977 period.

1st xi
1.Jack Hobbs
2.Victor Trumper
3.George Headley
4.Don Bradman
5.Walter Hammond
6.Gary Sobers
7.Clyde Walcott
8.Alan Davidson
9.Ray Lindwall
10.Sydney Barnes.
11.Subash Gupte

2nd xi
1.Len Hutton
2.Herbert Sutcliffe
3.Rohan Kanhai
4.Everton Weekes
5.Graeme Pollock
6.Keith Miller
7.Vinoo Mankad
8.Fred Trueman
9.Harold Larwood
10.Don Tallon
11.Bill o'reilly

Apologize If I am biased in selecting Indian stalwarts Gupte and Mankad but I felt they were both geniuses.Gupte was almost the equal of Shane Warne while Vinoo was close to the Sobers class.Richie Benaud missed out by a whisker when I took into account Vinoo's back to back centuries in Australia itself facing Lindwall and Miller.

The batting is marginally better in the pre-1977 xi but the xi of the last 40 years has a better bowling attack and more depth in batting.post 1977 xi has more match-winners yet may not overpower the duo of Sobers and Bradman.Still I back post-1977 team as it would have more professionalism. Anyway,a nail-biting finish with maybe not even a whisker seperating them.

1980's onwards

1st XI
1. Hayden
2. Gavaskar
3. Richards
4. Tendulkar
5. Lara
6. Imran
7. Gilchrist
8. Akram
9. Warne
10. McGrath
11. Marshall

2nd XI
1. Langer / Anwar (just on class)
2. Sehwag
3. Dravid
4. Ponting
5. Sangakarra
6. Kallis
7. Z. Abbas
8. Pollock
9. Holding
10. Donald / Steyn / Younis / Ambrose
11. Muralitharan

My pre-1977 team:

1. Barry Richards (*)
2. Victor Trumper
3. Sir Donald Bradman (*)
4. Sir Garfield Sobers (*)
5. Sir Everton Weekes
6. Keith Miller
7. Mike Procter (*)
8. Alan Knott
9. Alan Davidson or Jim Laker (according to conditions)
10. Fred Trueman (*)
11. Dennis Lillee (*)

Asterisks denote players almost certainly superior to a post-1977 opponent.

Forget gupte never heard of the geezer! 😀

Trueman , Larwood , Lindwall and Fazal. Or O'Reilly for spin instead of Lindwall. Fazal was a magician.

Wes Hall as reserve.

Actially - im cppying Junaids.

Thommo

My side is :

Gavaskar
Barry Richards
Bradman
Viv Richards of 1976

Great team Junaid .However Barry played after 1977 in WSC.Lillee also played after 1977.Criteria is no players who played after 1976.Anyway thanks for response.Would your team defeat a post1977 best 11?Interested in your answer. Also why not George Headley,Rohan Kanhai or Jack Hobbs?

Looks about right to me but I would drop MattFTB and bring in Gooch for his excellent vs WI. Might put Ambrose in for Wasim too.
