Ricky Ponting was arguably the best batsmen of last decade.Who do you think will go down as the best batsmen of this decade-

Contenders:

Steven Smith
Virat Kohli
AB de Villiers
Hashim Amla
Joe Root
Kane Williamson

Kohli easily, he is the most iconic cricketer of this decade and although he is not the best Test batsman, his legendary exploits in LOIs and status as a world class Test batsman combined with his superstar persona means that he dwarfs every cricketer playing today.

Virat Kohli
Steve Smith
Joe Root
Kane Williamson
Quinton De Kock
AB De Villers

Its between Smith or Kohli.

Root, Williamson and de Kock were too young and didn't do much in first few years of the decade across all forms.

AB de Villiers had a chance because his peak started since 2008 but it lasted only till 2015.

Will go with Kohli at the end.

This puts things into perspective:

Among people that have 5000+ runs in 2010s(in all formats) :-
Kohli has the most runs, second highest average, most 100s and most 50s.

Wow, didn't realize that Kohli has 46 international tons in this decade. Amla is the only other batsman in this decade with 40+ international tons. No other batsmen are in 35+ range as well.

Kane,Root and Smith are in 23-28 tons range. AB has 32 and Warner has 34 tons.

Forget since 2010, Kohli is in the top 10 in the all time list of international tons.

Kholi will be remembered but it's Root for me. He just exudes class. Kholi is more of a Gooch while Root is like a Gower.

The decade is not over yet. However, up until now it is between three contenders, Amla, AB and Smith.

Amla was the best in the world during the first five years of this decade (2010-2014), with Sanga a close second. Since the start of 2015, however, Smith has taken over big time in tests while AB, who has also been excellent since 2010 has established himself as a superior ODI player, as well as the best of this era.

So depending on how the next two years play out, either one of Amla, AB or Smith will be the best batsman of this decade.

If this was LOIs only, Kohli would feature alongside Amla and AB but he hasn't been up there in the test format.

Steven Smith

Simple reason, he is better than every other batsman in tests which is the most prestigious format. He won a world cup and performed in the knockout games.

Kohli is a far better limited overs batsman, the best in the world by a long shot. However, he has not performed in knockout games so far. So, he should not be rated as high as Smith.

Kohli plays a lot more ODIs than any other top batsman. In tests, Kohli has scored a good amount of 100s, the problem is that he has been inconsistent in tests.

Kohli has 5 test hundreds in australia from just 2 tours. He has centuries in south africa, sri lanka, west indies and new zealand. The only reason people are doubting his test ability is 2014 england tour where he flopped. This was his only England tour.Once India visit england next year, all doubters will be silenced.

No need to talk of his ODI and T20 exploits, walks into any all time squad purely on chasing ability.

Also because he has never consistently averaged 50+ in tests which is mainly because he has (surprisingly for a batsman of his calibre) failed to score heavily against the weak opponents (WI, SL) in any of the 5-6 series against them. If he were to have done that, he would be averaging well over 50, as well as not seem inconsistent in tests. But yeah, he is pretty ahead of everyone else overall IMO.

No one come close to Steven Smith.
In ODI's it's so easy to score runs these days that it doesn't even count.
Even In ODI's, he performed well in quarte semi and final of a winning World Cup. No other contender has done this.

Root is also brilliant but Smith has done it in India, in England superbly.
