Best bowling performance in a test match in losing cause in order of merit. In the case of a few bowlers I have included only one innings considering only that as outstanding performance. In overall ratings considered the sum impact and thus some of the individual innings efforts rate ahead of overall performances of both innings in test.

1.Wasim Akram 6-62 and 5-98 at Melbourne in 1989-90

2.Michael Holding 6-62 and 5- 45 at Melbourne in 1981-82

3.Kapil Dev 9-83 at Ahmedabad in 1983-84

4.Bob Willis 4-82 and 5-65 at Trent Bridge in 1980 v West Indies

5.Jagaval Srinath 8-86 v Pakistan at Kolkata

6.Imran Khan's 7-52 at Edgbaston in 1982.

7.Kapil Dev 5-125 and 3-43 v England at Lords in 1982

8.Ian Botham's 8-103 v West Indies at Lords in 1984.

9.Neil Foster 8-104 v Pakistan at Leeds in 1987

10.Wasim Akram 6- 61 and 5- 49 v West Indies in 2000 at Antigua

11.Ian Botham 6-78 and 5-98 at Perth in 1979-80

12.Bob Willis 4-57 and 5-35 v New Zealand at Leeds in 1983.

Wasim Akram was the ultimate epitome of pace bowling perfection at Melbourne combining pace, movement control and variation .Blended the skill of a surgeon with the agression of a boxer and the innovation of a magician.Revealed bowling art and craft at its supreme height.

Michael Holding resembled a Rolls Royce car at Melbourne in 1981 exhibiting genius in the speed he attained through the air combined with lethal bounce.Closest to pace bowling machine.

Placed Kapil Dev 9-83 at Ahmedabad highly because he solely carried the brunt of the bowling attack and bowled one of cricket's marathon spells. No doubt a wicket unfit for test cricket but Kapil exhibited supreme craft ,perfect length control and mastery of seam movement Also considered the strength of team he played against.
At Lords in 1982 Kapil attained spectacular sideways seam movement and in the 2nd innings achieved moral glory for India. with his 3 scalps on the evening of the penultimate day of the test.

Bob Willis was grit and determination personified at Trent Bridge v West Indies in 1980 almost winning the game for England.Rated so high as it was against one of the strongest test teams ever.Dropped catches robbed England of a sensational win.He virtually rekindled this effort v the Kiwis at leeds 3 years later defending a meagre target of 103 in the 4th innings .

At Kolkata in 1999 v Pakistan in the 2nd innings Srinath caused one of test cricket's most dramatic batting collapses .He exhibited pace bowling skill at its supreme depth perfectly blending speed, control and movement.A spell a Marshall or Lillee would be proud to bowl.

At Edgbaston in 1982 Imran bowled one of the best spells witnessed in England in modern times pefectly blending speed with movement.

Ian Botham was spectacular at Lords against the best team ever ,West Indies.Total mastery of seam movement. At Perth in 1979-80 displayed great bowling intelligence and mastery of seam movement.

Wasim Akram at Antigua in 2000 was a revelation and bad umpiring robbed Pakistan a victory in that test which would have given Pakistan their first series victory on Carribean soil.Zig zagged the cricket ball like a magician to rip through the middle order.

In seaming conditions Neil Foster displayed skill at its supreme depth in 1987 against a strong Pakistan batting line up.

Spells that just missed out were Imran Khan's at Kingston in 1977 ,Wasim Akram's at Barbados in 1988 and Denis Lillee's v India at Melbourne in 1980-81.

Shoaib vs Australia in Colombo deserves a mention. He should have had a hat-trick as well, but Bucknor denied him.

Venkatesh Prasad vs South Africa at Durban in 94(?).

Prasad was spitting venom on pitch where Donald mauled the Indian batting lineup. Where Donald, Pollock and Srinath were exploring bounce and pace, Prasad used subtle variations and movement off the pitch. His leg cutters to dismiss Kirsten were exceptional!

Pity he was on he losing end of the game, but India were thoroughly unprepared for that pitch.
