Best subcontinental fielder ever?

I saw him take a super catch in 2004 Pak Ind match in Karachi I attended and that moment is etched in my memory :))

I also met him later on in the evening

but he was generally a great fielder

Yes, and he jumped (probably at long off/on) straightaway after skidding and getting up straight.. (probably batsman was Abdul Razzaq, if I am not wrong), was a difficult catch made to look simple.

Though I rate slip catching to be an important part in being a Test fielder, and Azhar was the best subcontinent fielder in that regard I saw.. Mark Waugh is the best in the world.

Probably the best ground fielder inside circle is Dilshan, while Raina is outstanding in outfield. Wasim Baris is slighlty ahead of Kirmany as he was outsatnding against all types of bowling, but Kiri was probably best ever against spin. I think, Solker was the best shot in catchers while Mahela is probably the best slip catcher.

Now, coming to the best all-round fielders, I have very little doubt about the first 2 -

Azhar was probably as good an all-round fielder as Mark Waugh. He was brilliant stopper in inner circle - Azhar hardly dived, because of his anticipation & perfect pick-ups; at one motion he was ready to throw. On the line, he took some of the best running catches, had a strong arm & his acceleration during chasing was outstanding. Azhar was among the all time best slip catchers against spin, while he was safe against pacers. Besides, he loved to field in risky positions & as Captain, often he used to stand at silly point against off-spinners. I don't think, sub-continent ever had or 'll have such an outstanding all-round fielder.

What I wrote for Azhar, is probably applicable for Kapil as well, but I don't think he was that good in slip. Apart from these 2, I heard that during their younger days Javed & Tiger Pataudi were among the best of their time (can't tell much as the standard of 60s & 70s were different, but they were indeed great slip catchers). From SRL, I think the man close o Ahzar in all-round capacity was Mahana.

Those who are thinking of UV, Kaif, Nazir, bla, bla, bla & bla ...... don't have any idea of what it's like to take edges of Anil Kumble on a crumbling wicket from 5 yards, often one handed & blind folded ill the ball has past Mongia/More's gloves. I believe Ct. Azhar, B Kumble is a world record for non WK-bowler pair (Or Taylor/Mark-Shane?) - 29 times (?) it happened, for any of those I listed with bla, bla & bla.... at least 100 runs (4 X 25) 'll be the damage to start with...............

Almost all the good names mentioned. Inzi was pretty safe in the slips. :inzi

Kaif was probably the best back in the days.
Right now its raina and r. jadeja.

From Pakistan its fawad alam i guess.

Upul Chandana. He was a brilliant fielder. Close in, out fielding or catching. He was amazing. Haven't seen anyone better. I haven't seen Solkar and co.

I haven't seen Eknath Solkar too but from what I have heard, he was a genius at forward short leg.

That too without helmet.

Raina is the best for me.. I haven't seen the Mohammad kaif playing either.

Best slip fielder - Azhar
Best all round fielder - dilshan
Best short leg fielder - Asif mujtaba

Kapil was pretty safe in slips, but not as good as Azhar, I agree.

For an attacking fielder, it would be Eknath Solkar without a doubt. His reflexes were incomparable. In addition, he crouched a couple of steps closer to the batsman than a regular forward short leg does, so he was able to pull out catches that would not even have been catches for another regular fielder in that position.
This is a good read, if you're interested:

If you talk about allround fielders, it is difficult to look beyond M. Azharuddin. He too had great reflexes and pouched many a catch in slips and stopped a lot many balls at point.

From Pakistan, Shoaib Mohammad was a versatile fielder, both in the outfield as well as close in.

From Srilanka, Dilshan is a great fielder. His reflexes and anticipation are awesome.

India have an excellent fielding unit at the moment - especially in tournaments where it seems to go up a notch. You can sense that the fielders are building up a lot of pressure for their bowlers.

Mohd Kaif definitely a notch ahead of everyone else from SC. The guy was electric in the field and never dropped any catches, rather took some absolute stunner. Of all his amazing fielding attempts, one will always stay in our memories is that mind blowing outfield catch he took in the historic Karachi ODI in 2004 that India narrowly won in the last over's last ball. 700 runs were scored that day and it probably came down to that stunner from Kaif in the last or second last over that turned the match towards India eventually.

People talk about great catches and well just for centuries hit by batsmen, i guess the situation of the match also adds a lot to it and given the situation, hype and value of that match, that moment, it would probably go down in my book as among the finest ever catches in the game.

Sorry to disagree. But Mahanama trumps everybody from SC. He was giving a Jonty, Harris and Ponting a run for their money as world's best fielder. Never mind Asia!

Azhar at point or cover
Jayawardne or Dravid in the slips
Ijaz Ahmed in the outfield.

LOL at Ijaz. :)))

Some people just want to watch the world burn. :)))

Yuvraj probably was the best at hitting the stumps and taking high flying catches.

Deluded Indian fans. You were shitting in the pants in late 90s contemplating to hit something in air against us. There were 7 - 8 fielders easily better than Raina in late 90s in SL team.

No.

Very subjective to judge who is the best fielder especially some fielders are good at certain positions.
I have followed closely the Pak over the years so I can only comment on them

Close in field: Shoaib Mohammad, Miandad.
Slips: YK, Inzi
Point, Cover etc: Imran Nazir
All round: Malik, Fawad, Afridi(for short period)

A few years on from the start of this thread I know however I think Jadeja will end his career with this title.

Surprised bit to see Umar Akmal name. He is an amazing deep mid wicket fielder and superb anywhere in the field. Rarely ever drops a catch. Also with no wicket keeping experience ever become a full time keeper at the highest level to mystery spinners like Ajmal.

For me it's probably Ravindra Jadeja. But Nasir Hossain is also a phenomenal fielder who gets overlooked for his fielding skills.

When you smash it to cow corner its an easy two (at least) especially when it's Dhoni and a young Rohit Sharma running between the wickets. But Nasir Hossain had other plans.

Umar Akmal was a terrible wicketkeeper

Give anyone else in international cricket the gloves when they have never been in that position and let’s see the results. He kept to Ajmal and riaz and Amir afridi. And did a stupendous job.

Jadeja right now. He is an upgrade over Kaif, Dilshan, Yuvi, Raina etc. No doubt all of them were tremendous fielders as well but Jadeja is a slightly superior version to them.

No. He did a stupendously bad job.

Ravindra jadeja.
Yuvi was spectacular not safe.
Kaif was great but never had a bullet throw like sir jadeja.

Jadeja and it is not even close. He is arguably among the top 5 fielders of all time. He is simply brilliant at everything.

Jadeja. He can do everything Kaif, Raina, Dilshan could do. Plus his throw is like a laser guided missile - fast, precise and accurate.

Eknath Solkar.

Best forward short-leg ever.

And said these immortal words to Sir Geoffrey Boycott:

“I will out you, Bloody”.

It is very difficult to pinpoint one fielder as the best. There are many amazing fielders.

I think Shoaib Malik used to be a great fielder back in the days.

If one were to consider all the aspects of the art of fielding I propose Jadeja as the greatest fielder ever to have graced this game.
Catching, anticipation, accuracy, speed, attacking the ball, boundary line antics. The man has it all and then some.

Nobody on a cricket field has ever attacked and speared it in like sir jadeja.

Watching him field is less like sport and more like an artist doing his thing.

Surely Imrul Kayes....

Jokes aside, think there's none other than Jadeja right now who deserves this title more.

Solkar is the GOAT close-in fielder. Kapil, Azhar, Kaif and Raina were great all round fielders. Pakistan had Ijaz Ahmed and Saleem Malik, even Shoaib Malik in recent times. Sri Lanka had Mahanama, Chandana and Dilshan, Bangladesh has Soumya Sarkar but he can be erratic.

But when you see a table like this, there can only be one winner.

Roshan Mahanama is the best I have seen. Chandana, Jadeja, Ijaz Ahmed, Raina, Azhar, Jayasuriya are some other great fielders I've seen.
Kapil was a brilliant all-round fielder in his prime.

He was on the field as a substitute in almost every match.

Now its Jadeja.. Not just in subcontinent but one of the best fielder in world cricket.
