Best Test bowling averages by Asians in SENA : minimum 50 wickets

All 5 names true geniuses with the ball, and Asif's name in the list does make you sad for his wasted talent.

Bumrah is a sensational bowler. If he can maintain this level of form, he will go down as the second greatest Asian fast bowler of all-time after Wasim Akram.

More low quality posts.

Not sure what is going on tonight. Perhaps everyone is bored during the rain breaks.

Raise the standard please.

Peak imran
Peak wasim
Peak waqar

We're unblievable. I believe these three have strong arguments for the three greatest in history.

In wasim Waqar time kiwis were a joke team. If you exclude kiwis and add india and west indies then results are different. 28 for wasim.

Imran was the best.

Not Waqar. Other 2 yes. Also with crappy fielders too. No good wicket keeper barring Latif.

This is why Wasim is the best bowler from Asia. And between the W's, I always rate Wasim higher. Wasim was better in India.

Hopefully, Bumrah can sustain this level of performance for a few more years. Quality performer.

Wasim was slightly better overseas, but Imran had the greatest peak for any fast bowler, while Wasim no great peak - never even no. 1 ICC rated

Wasim did not peak like Imran or Waqar but he was just a very consistent bowler throughout. I dont believe in rating bowlers on their peaks alone. You have to see the careers in their entirety.

Away from Pakistan/UAE, against other top 8 sides, Wasim is the best Asian fast bowler.

Waqar was better while playing these top sides at home and Imran was a monster on Pakistani pitches.

Lol. Waqar before his stress fracture got to 200 test wickets at a average under 20, and a strike rate under 40! Was insanely good

The way Bumrah is bowling, he'll be top of the list very soon.

Arguably Wasim Akram was most skillful bowler of all time , he should be top 3 bowler of all time, his record in test would have been better but because of diabetes it was difficult to bowl long spells

From 1977 to 1983 Imran was monster regardless of any pitch/ venue.

I'm not rating them on just peak - I just think it is more significant than a very minor away advantage. Also in Imran's favour:
WPM
More rounded record vs different teams; Wasim averaged 29ish+ vs SA, Eng, Ind

I have watched him bowl. He bowled against weake batsmen. There is a whole thread about it. Read it. Mamoon can explain to you if required.

Imran and wasim yes. Legends.
Waqar no. Overrated
Shoaib is far better.
Asif was better but yea fixing etc is a different story.

Diabetes affected stamina that much? He was a true great regardless.

Exceptional stuff from Bumrah to be part of this list and that too amongst the top ones however, key would be to keep his fitness and performance up for coming few years as well. Also another important aspect to consider is the impact Bumrah's performances have created for the Indian team in overseas conditions, its been massive.

Yes it does , 100% great , in my opinion he is all time top 3 bowler .
Such a shame. Was it type2? Perhaps it was his diet? I remember there was a time when he looked very fit In early 90s. Chiselled jawline and lean. Burly shoulders. Maybe post 95 he had diabetes. What a shame. One of the best ever to play the game.
If he played in a better catching side, he may have been as good as mcgrath.

Bumrah is now top of the list with an average of 23.92 per wicket.

Type 1 where genes do play a role.

Akram has Type 1. Probably always had it & that can take its toll. Our neighbor’s daughter has Type 1 & she can barely play in the sun without getting tired. Its simply amazing he played a professional sport through all that.

Yes, it does impact stamina and it was only discovered when he started losing weight quickly, alongside lack of stamina and being very thirsty regularly. To be honest playing at such high level and that too in such a stamina, strength and fitness intensive role as a pace bowler while being a diabetic is close to a miracle especially when one takes into account the kind of performer he was even after that. He played cricket with diabetes for almost 6-7 years, there is no other notable cricketer after Wasim (Maybe Craig McMillan can be included here whose diabetes was detected I guess in his teenage) who had to play with it let alone a pacer and that too of his quality. Yes there have been quite a few examples of other athletes who played their sports with diabetes but, Wasim's tenure post detection is one of the longest and he was one of the finest performers as a athlete in his sport amongst the others even post diabetes detection.

Not impossible but, it does give you a disadvantage and extra thing to think about when you are exerting too much. Mental side of the things take a toll as well.

Very sad but so? Still one of the best ever. Shows you how good he is.

So it was not his lifestyle that you were asking rather more to do with his inherited genes as other type 1 diabetics (It can even happen in young children).

He was exceptional, right up their amongst the very best if not the best in terms of the complete varity of pace bowling skills he possessed without a doubt.

Bumrah can become the GOAT Asian test bowler in SENA countries by the time he hangs up his boots.

Although I am not a fan of comparing stats of a player at his peak to someone who has finished his career like Wasim. Every player always has a slump when they near the end of their careers. Look at Kohli.

Wasim Akram what a bowler, Bumrah may exceed him in stats but skills and the ability to produce magic balls out of nowhere puts Wasim above everyone else.

I still consider Wasim ahead. If Bumrah can cross Wasim's tally at a lower tally, then yeah he'd be truly ahead.

No doubt.

But the point stands that Bumrah is an outstanding bowler.

Why would a Muppet explain to.mecabout fast bowling! I watcheda lot of county late 80's early 90's and international cricket, waqar younis I saw in county cricket for Surrey was one the most devastating fast bowlers ever seen! And he replicated that for pakistan!

Like I said
Peak wasim
Peak waqar
Peak imran

For me were 3 of the finest genuine fast bowlers I've ever seen with great skill set and pace.

The batting in this era in tests is ONE BIG JOKE!

It's probably unfair to compare every Asian bowler to Wasim. They are very different styles.

But it IS testament to Bumrah's talent and hard work that he CAN be mentioned seriously in a comparison to Wasim.

Bumrah is the exceptional talent in a strong era of Indian seam bowling. The one who could go down as a great. The only issue is if he can play enough tests to mount a real case.

He's good to watch, can bowl real heat at times and I think he deserves every success- he's no fluke.

PS. Waqar was also feared & well regarded in an era choc full of serious fast bowling talent. Not just armchair experts like us, but plenty of past players speak almost in awe and the genuine nerves facing a guy like Waqar was like.

Oh absolutely. Undoubtedly. Very sad to hear about type 1 diabetes. There is no cure for that at all?

Comparing Bumrah to Wasim is like comparing Babar to Kohli.

The stats eventually might work in Bumrah and Babar's favor, but they are a rung lower than the ones they're being compared to.

Instead, their fans should just celebrate them potentially becoming the greatest from their countries.

Agree with wasim. Wasim is slightly better than bumrah.

Waqar was mediocre against Aus, SA & India, that will always be held against him. He made his living terrorizing NZ, WI, Sri Lanka etc...

Wasim imo is the best ever fast bowler from the sub continent, Imran also has a strong case, but for me Wasim brought that extra excitement and X factor..

waqar younis I saw in county cricket for Surrey was one the most devastating fast bowlers ever seen! And he replicated that for pakistan!

Also no one really cares about how a player did in the county circuit, when Srinath was introd to the county he was considered the fastest bowler in county and being compared with Allan Donald. Srinath was also very good in the county circuit, it is first class cricket still end of the day.

McGrath, Ambrose, Wasim and Donald were all better than Waqar, in my opinion.

If the stats turn out in their favour at the end of their careers, they are definitely in the discussion. We judge players on performances

From 1990 to 1995 Waqar Younis was monster against any side , his decline started post 1995 due to his injury as he lost pace though he is in great list.

No. One of those things that have to be managed throughout the life.

He played against Aus in the 90 to 95 and avg around 34 vs them.

He terrorized teams like NZ, ZIm, Sri Lanka etc mainly.

Credit to him though he did real well against the WI, even though their batting was nothing great like the 80s but still solid.

Agree with wasim. Wasim is slightly better than bumrah.

Babar with his 2 Sena centuries is nowhere near Kohli in tests, but neck to neck in white ball cricket. At this stage, even Rishabh Pant with his amazing match winning innings in tests is better than Babar.

Wasim Akram is hands down better than Bumrah. Those of us who had the privilege of seeing Akram would know what i am talking about!

He played against Aus in the 90 to 95 and avg around 34 vs them.

He terrorized teams like NZ, ZIm, Sri Lanka etc mainly.

Did you see his bowling in 90's in England , agree his record in Australia not as good as should have been , rest all the places he was more than excellent , keep in mind you can not compare 90's Australia team with current team so can not compare Bumrah Aus record Waqar against Aus.

Absolutely not.

The wickets Bumrah has taken aren't just stats, just like the runs Pant scored aren't just numbers. We need a qualitative metric that goes beyond numbers. If you keep nostalgia aside, these players have matched or surpassed former greats in terms of quality and impact, something players like Babar, Rohit or Shakib have never achieved despite their numbers.

Bumrah may not sustain these numbers for another 5 years, that is to be seen, but nothing we have witnessed puts him at a lower rung so far.

The batting in this era in tests is ONE BIG JOKE!

Unlike some kids here, I have actually seen the 90s era and no, batting in that era wasn't all that, specially when you take into account easier bowling conditions.

Likes of Bumrah and Cummins would run riot in that era as well. Heck, anything over 140 with bounce and Asian batsmen were sitting ducks.

I agree with the wasim being better part. I disagree with babar not being on kohlis level. What has kohli ever achieved in tests away from home in difficult conditions? He never won test series single handedly like Smith. They can be compared. Babar has weak players around him. He can't do it all by himself.

Wrong. Current Aussie team is better than 90s team. It's 2000 Aussie side that's better than current team. Still have doubts? Look at the bowling attack. Current bowling is isnanely good.

Yea people are way too nostalgic. I have a hard time imagining any of the 90s batsmen having any sort of success vs bumrah or Cummins. Mind you they wouldn't need to focus on t20 like they do today. They will be even more potent.

Bumrah is a sensational bowler. If he can maintain this level of form, he will go down as the second greatest Asian fast bowler of all-time after Wasim Akram.

Imran Khan is unquestionably the greatest fast bowler from Asia in Test.

Just compare Australia todays batting with 90's , 90's batting was far ahead.

Yep.

India's batting was incredible in the 90's
Pakistan batting was very strong 90's
Australia were very very strong
Windies were strong
South Africa were strong

Basicaly no contest between the batting of this era and the 90's

India's batting in 90s was nothing in Test Cricket. They relied on one man overseas with no bowling support and as a result, they failed to win a single test in the whole decade. At home, Kumble and Srinath supported well and so did a couple of more batters - Azharuddin and Sidhu. As a result, we were still dominant at home.

India was not very bad you are stating though relatively other teams were very strong .

Yup, not to mention easier bowling conditions and blatant shaitani with the ball that can make Praveen Kumar look like a world beater. With current technology, Cricket is a lot cleaner than in 90s, and bowlers actually earn their wickets.

Imagine Bumrah, Cummins, Steyn and Rabada in 90s with fielders "preparing" the ball like they used to... lol, total carnage. :))

But pitches these days are more flat , for example Australian pitches are not as same as it was in 80's or 90's , these days Australia pitches have not much swing and seam as it we have witness in 70,80 & 90's , these days pitches have only bounce almost flat pitches .

Credit to Bumrah that he keeps on delivering. He is a threat whenever he comes on to bowl.

A genuinely fun bowler to watch.

He keeps it up, then he will be a great. There is no monopoly on greatness by bowlers of old.

Then that means current bowlers are efar superior to 90s if pitches are flat and they are still averaging well.

Exactly. 90s batsmen stand no chance lmao.

current bowling attacks -

much more superior than the 90s bowling attack . india, australia and england and new zealand have the best bowling attack currently . the teams also have very good all rounders - stokes, jadeja etc. Pakistan too is a competent bowling attack in most conditions and not far behind.

in 90s you had a rather 2 prong bowling attack. you would face a donald and a pollock but then you got ntini, mcmillan and kallis . good bowlers but not as good as the current supoort cast most teams have.

also the current era of fast bowlers is fitter, leaner. not to mention that most team seem to have an endless supply of good fast bowlers.

england not much hampered with joffra absence or india can bench umesh etc but still win matches. in 90s , the second string bowlers were not as good.

all in all the bowling currently is much more superior and batters who average 40 plus today likely would have been in 50 plus category.

i rate the current bowling era as the strongest i have seen in last 30 years. the pace quartets of australia, india and england are as good as any (slightly still inferior to the great west indies attack) . but you add quality spin support in each team and these attacks are relentless.

kudos to batters like pujara or babar azam. 90s was a cakewalk relatively

Quality of batting is also very low , overall test cricket standard is low , any where bowl swings most of the the batsmen struggles.
