Slater and Taylor faced the better bowlers by a considerable margin. It's comparing Wasim/Waqar, Donald/Pollock and Walsh/Ambrose with the likes of Shoaib/Sami, Ntini/Nel and Edwards/Powell. I grant that pale imitations of Waqar and Pollock were still playing and England and India had better bowlers in the early noughties compared with the nineties but the drop off in the quality of bowling is huge. Of course, there's also the fact that I'd rather pay good money to watch Michael Slater bat than any of the others. I'd buck the trend and choose the two NSW lads, with the added bonus of Taylor's captaincy. Both are horrible commentators though.
