Bizarre Iranian attempts to influence Israeli election

It is now clear that Benjamin Netanyahu has returned to power with his most hardline coalition yet, with the racist anti-Arab Religious Zionism Party.

What is truly bizarre is the grossly incompetent Iranian efforts to influence the election.

Basically, Iran attempted to suppress the vote of the centrist Lapid administration, which inflated the vote of the far-right anti-Arab parties. But they also used crass anti-Semitic slogans which further pushed the vote to the right.

This is self-defeating for two reasons. Firstly, the Russian Moldovan Avigdor Lieberman's pro-Russian Yisrael Beiteinu party is estranged from Netanyahu, so the Russia/Iran axis is actually directly harmed by a Netanyahu government. Secondly, the government which Netanyahu is about to replace was neutral in the Ukraine war, whereas Netanyahu is a longstanding friend of Joe Biden and may well now offer air strikes against Iran to prevent drone and missile deliveries to Russia.

All in all it is the most inept piece of foreign interference in an election that I have ever seen.
