BJP member Subramanian Swamy introduced in Rajya Sabha Friday a private member’s bill proposing “deterrent punishment”, including the death penalty, for cow slaughter and related issues. The Cow Protection Bill, 2017, seeks “to create an authority to ensure stabilisation of population of cows and to suggest such measures to comply with Article 37 and 48 of the Constitution, to ban the slaughter of cow and to provide deterrent punishment including death penalty for slaughter of cow and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto”.

Article 37 says the provisions of Directive Principles are not enforceable by any court and emphasises the duty of the state to apply these principles in making laws to establish a just society. Article 48 mandates the state to prohibit the slaughter of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle.

In parliamentary history, only one private member’s bill has become a law. While scores of private members’ bills are introduced each session, they are invariably withdrawn by the respective members after the government gives its views on those subjects.

Am happy that BJP is digging it's own grave. BJP leaders are mainly upper caste Hindus who don't eat meat & they won't stop until they slowly make it impossible to get any kind of meat.
Banning cow slaughter is just their opening salvo & hopefully the beginning of their end.

Seems as if they are desperate for some civil conflict to accelerate the conversion of all non-Hindu's of India by 2021. At least in Pak we can eat as many kebabs as we want! It only exposes their insecurity when they tell others what they can or can not eat. As a Muslim I have no problems in anyone consuming pork or swine at all.

Yeap, legend and maybe future PM. Anyways don't you think people will misuse this law? If passed it will basically send the message that people who slaughter cows deserve punishment. Won't take long before emotional mob takes life of someone.

I don't think you are doing India any favours by comparing the rise of the right wing in the west to that of India. India has never experienced western style freedom of expression or multiculturalism that there should be a swing to the right to counterbalance it.

First you have to reach the top of the mountain to start a descent to a lower level. If you've never done more than wallow in the mud then how can you understand the perspective from a great height?

Death penalty is a little too ridiculous and extreme but nothing wrong in having laws guarding the religious sentiments of the country's citizens

Poor logic, those laws in theory are to offer equal protection to all followers of religion.

The difference here is a large portion of the population probably over 400 million love a beef steak or curry.

I think it's outragoues people have to resort to cooking it alive to get their daily protien. Slaughter is humane, cows are eaten all over the planet.
