Bail plea of Quetta cop who killed blasphemy suspect filed

Two lawyers, including the Quetta Bar Association president, have filed the bail application of a police constable who killed an under-custody blasphemy suspect.

The bail application of Saad Khan Sarhadi was filed in a local court on Friday after his family handed over the case to QBA president Qari Rehmatullah Khan Advocate.

After the initial hearing on Friday, the court adjourned further proceedings till September 25.

The accused was arrested for killing Abdul Ali alias Lala, who was being held at the Cantt police station.

A case was registered against him at the same police station.

Some other lawyers have also announced that they will plead Mr Sarhadi’s case free of cost. Senator Abdul Shakoor Ghabizai of JUI-F has also announced to bear all legal expenses.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family, including his two sons and elders of the Nourzai trib, have announced not to pursue the murder case. They have also pardoned the police constable.

At a press conference, the victim’s two sons, Muhammad Usman and Muhammad Wali, along with Haji Faizullah Noorzai, the chief of Nourzai tribe said, “The [victim’s] family and tribe have nothing to do with the act of blasphemy committed by Abdul Ali.”

The victim’s two brothers, Khair Muhammad and Bor Muhammad, were also present during the press conference.

“We have unconditionally pardoned the police official Saad Khan Sarhadi in the name of Allah,” the two sons said.

Mr Ali was arrested last week on the charges of desecrating the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) over the telephone. His alleged phone conversation was viral on social media, triggering sharp criticism and protests.

After the arrest, a mob gathered in front of the Kharotabad police station where the accused was being held initially. The protesters pelted the station’s building with stones and hurled a hand grenade, which exploded outside the police station.

After the accused was moved to the Cantt Police Station for safety reasons, the attacker arrived there and, after a brief conversation with the officers, opened fire on the suspect.

Sit-in tomorrow for action over burning of Umerkot blasphemy suspect’s body

A group of youths calling itself the ‘Sindh Youth Action Committee’ has announced its intention to hold a sit-in in Umerkot on Wednesday (Sept 25) along with the bereaved family members of Dr Shah Nawaz Kunbhar, a blasphemy suspect killed by police in an alleged encounter, if those who had torched his body were not booked.

Speaking at a news conference at the local press club on Monday, the committee members, Sindhu Nawaz Ghangro, Hamz Ali Chandio, Shahid Mirani, Ali Ajiz and others, alleged that the removed senior police officers — DIG of Mirpurkhas and SSPs of Mirpurkhas and Umerkot — were directly involved in Dr Kunbhar’s extrajudicial killing. Therefore, they said, these officers should be arrested and the case be investigated by an impartial officer.

They said that some extremists were bent upon destroying peace in Sindh. They said terrorism and extremism could only be countered with mystic teachings. People of Sindh had never accepted extremist and terrorist tendencies, they said.

They told journalists that civil society activists had gathered in Umerkot on Sunday and offered their condolences to the bereaved family members of Dr Shah Nawaz. They regretted that the bereaved family was demanding justice but nobody was listening to them.

They said that the FIR of Dr Shah Nawaz’s custodial killing should be registered without any further delay against these senior police officers. They urged Sindh-based civil society organisations to participate in the Sept 25 sit-in.

They said the bereaved family was being subjected to mental torture ever since the doctor’s murder. They claimed that the police were forcing them to give statements of their [police’s] choice, and added that the bereaved family had shared some videos and an evidence in support of their claim.

According to the doctor’s family, they had not given any statement to the police, the committee said.

The committee members claimed that Dr Shah Nawaz was “kidnapped”, and not “arrested” in Karachi. They said statements of police officers were on record in this regard in which they had called religious people to lodge an FIR. They argued that if it was true that Dr Shah Nawaz was arrested, then he should have been produced in a court of law.

They said that even if the charge of blasphemy against him had been proved, then he should have been punished as per law.

They deplored that he was extrajudicially killed and then handed over to a mob.

They said police were directly involved in this crime, and added that Sindh High Court, Sindh government and Supreme Court should have taken notice of it.

Meanwhile, a ‘Joint Action Committee’ which met here on Monday at the regional office of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), urged Sindh government to ensure protection to the family members of Dr Shah Nawaz Kunbhar.

The JAC demanded a judicial inquiry, headed by a sitting judge of the Sindh High Court, and said those responsible for the murder, besides extremist groups and police officials, should be held accountable on the basis of social media evidence.

The JAC decided to send its delegation to Umerkot on Tuesday (Sept 24) to offer its condolences to the bereaved family.

Family of blasphemy-accused Umerkot doctor files FIR against 45 suspects

The family of Dr Shahnawaz Kunbhar — who was killed by Mirpurkhas police in a staged encounter over a blasphemy accusation — filed a first information report (FIR) on Friday against 45 suspects, including top police officials and a cleric, over his killing.

The doctor hailing from Umerkot was shot dead by police in an alleged extra-judicial killing in Mirpurkhas on September 19, a day after being booked on allegations of blasphemy.

After the encounter, the body was handed over to the family, who brought it to Janhero — the native village of the suspect — for burial. However, they had to escape after a mob descended on them to snatch the body, which they later burned.

An inquiry into the incident was launched and Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar on Thursday presented the findings, saying the probe found that police “staged the encounter”.

Lanjar announced the registration of the case today, attaching a copy of it to his statement on X.

“In case number 147/2024, registered in Sindhri police station, 45 people, including the former DIG, two SSPs, two inspectors … have been named,” he said, adding that a cleric was also named.

The home minister maintained that the Sindh government strongly opposed extrajudicial actions and believed in “justice and fairness”.

“No matter how powerful or high [ranking] an officer someone is, respect and observance of the constitution and the law is mandatory for everyone,” Lanjar reiterated.

The Sindhri police registered the case on the complaint of the slain doctor’s brother-in-law under Sections 34 (common intention), 120-B (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender), 302 (punishment for murder) and 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code; Sections 6 and 7 (terrorism/punishment for acts of terrorism) of the Anti-Terrorism Act and Sections 8 and 9 (punishment for torture/punishment for custodial death) of the Torture and Custodial Death Prevention and Punishment Act of 2022.

The FIR was lodged against the suspended Mirpurkhas deputy inspector general (DIG), two senior superintendents of police (SSP) of Mirpurkhas and Umerkot respectively, and a cleric among 45 suspects.

The FIR said that Dr Shahnawaz was arrested from Lyari and was killed in Mirpurkhas’ Sindhri area on September 19.

It said that blasphemy charges were levelled against Dr Shahnawaz and he fled the area after a violent protest by “religious groups” in Umerkot. The doctor contended that his social media accounts had been hacked and he was not behind the posts.

However, the FIR said a cleric in Umerkot led a large rally demanding that the police arrest the doctor and warning that otherwise, the crowd would take matters into its own hands.

It added that Dr Shahnawaz travelled to Karachi and met another relative on September 18. It further said that the Umerkot SSP ordered a police team to go to Karachi and arrest the doctor, which the personnel did in the presence of a relative of the deceased.

The FIR said the complainant’s brother informed him on September 19 that Dr Shahnawaz was killed in an “encounter” in Sindhri at 4am, with Mirpurkhas police registering a case half an hour later.

It added that when the doctor’s coffin was taken for burial, a mob attacked the ambulance carrying the remains. “We could not perform the rites,” the complainant said, adding that the mob later snatched the body and set it on fire. The complainant added that the doctor’s body bore marks of torture in addition to the bullet wounds.

He alleged that the Sindhri station house officer (SHO) filed two “fake” FIRs against the doctor, while high-ranking officials from Mirpurkhas police told the media that Dr Shahnawaz was killed in an encounter.

“They were given rewards, cash prizes and garlands by different people at the DIG office,” the complainant added. “By doing so, these officers spread fear and terror in the area.”

Death penalty awarded to Gujjar Khan suspect for blasphemy, cybercrime

A special court has handed death sentence and life imprisonment to a resident of Gujjar Khan on charges of blasphemy and cybercrime.

The decision of the special court, which functions under Peca, was announced following an investigation conducted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) that had initially registered the case against the suspect.

I'm sure this must make all Pakistanis around the world so proud.

We often underappreciate how blessed we are not to be living in such a primitive society. I would be ordered a death sentence on blasphemy charges every week if I lived in Pakistan. 🤣
Indian Muslims thank their fortune on social media everyday.

Blasphemy law is only there to protect a glass house.

These manmade laws serve to protect bruised egos of clerics -- and alike -- from humanity who are offended at the documented brutalities and inconsistencies in holy books.

Questions are censured. And the one's asking are murdered to keep this glass house standing.

But not for long. Truth always wins.

Blasphemy accused sentenced to death in KP

An anti-terrorism court here on Saturday convicted a man for blasphemy and other religion-related offences and sentenced him to death.

The judge, who conducted the trial of the case inside the Peshawar Central Jail due to sensitivity of the matter, pronounced that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused and the evidence on record connected him with the commission of the offence, official sources confirmed.

The convict, a resident of Bannu district, was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency’s Counterterrorism Wing last year. He was charged with different provisions of Pakistan Penal Code, including section 295-C (blasphemy) and that of Anti-Terrorism Act.

Blasphemy Law - Should Pakistan Scrap This?

Akin to asking:
Should we stop killing others who don't agree?
Should we stop marrying underage girls?
Should we stop treating women unfairly?
Should we stop praying to inanimate objects?

Well of course all 5 above are detrimental to society wellbeing.

Anti-terrorism court sentences four to death for spreading religious hatred online

In a historic ruling, an anti-terrorism court has sentenced four individuals to death for allegedly spreading religious hatred on social media platforms.

The convicts—Rana Usman, Ashfaq Ali, Salman Sajjad, and Wajid Ali—were found guilty under Section 11 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). They were also charged under sections 295-A, 295-B, 295-C, 298-A, 34, and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Additional Sessions Judge Muhammad Tariq Ayub announced the verdict, which includes a 10-year prison term and a fine of Rs1 million for each convict.

The case, registered in October 2022, highlighted the growing misuse of digital platforms to incite religious discord and violence. According to prosecutors, the accused were operating Facebook pages used to disseminate allegedly blasphemous content.

The ruling sends a strong message regarding the consequences of using online platforms to promote religious hatred and disrupt societal harmony.

This draconian law is created for a two-fold effect:

1- protect islamic glass house, just too many skeletons in its closet.
2- maintain control over populace, rule of might over the meekest.

And then the audacity to call for humane compassion from blasphemy law apologists. Hell no.

Youth held under blasphemy charge in Sahiwal

The Ghala Mandi police arrested a Christian youth under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, 295-A, 298-A and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorist Act-1997.

The complaint from the same locality claimed the suspect had uttered derogatory remarks when he was present with his friends.

Following the incident, village elders and religious leaders decided to lodge an official complaint with the police.

Locals reported the suspect was an addict and mentally unstable.

The district police deployed officers to ensure the safety of the suspect and his family and nearby Christian neighbourhood. Guards were stationed at a village Church.

DPO Rana Tahir told Dawn the suspect would be presented before a local judicial magistrate on Tuesday and the police would act according to the judge’s decision.

Bishop Ibrahim Danial of the Gospel Mission and leading minority rights activists expressed sorrow over the incident and called for a medical examination of the youth to determine his mental health.

Sources said more than a dozen blasphemy cases had been registered in Sahiwal over the past 15 months.
