LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Golden Globes gave Queen musical “Bohemian Rhapsody” its top prize on Sunday in an unexpected victory over romance “A Star is Born,” and named 1960s segregation-era roadtrip “Green Book” the best comedy or musical film.

In a night of upsets, Rami Malek won best drama actor for his role as late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and Glenn Close won for “The Wife” over presumed favorite Lady Gaga in “A Star is Born.”

Lady Gaga, whose role in the movie was her first lead part after a successful music career, won best original song for “Shallow.”

British actors Olivia Coleman (“The Favourite”) and Christian Bale (“Vice”) took home the lead comedy movie acting awards.

Mexico’s Alfonso Cuaron won the Golden Globe for best director and, as expected, his lovingly shot semi-autobiographical movie “Roma” was named best foreign language movie.

The Golden Globes, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are the first major showbusiness awards in the countdown to the Oscars in February.

“Vice,” a scathing political comedy about the rise to power of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, went into Sunday’s ceremony with a leading six nominations. But the film has proved divisive among audiences and critics and went home with just one for actor Bale.

In television, the big winners were Cold War spy thriller “The Americans,” new comedy “The Kominsky Method,” and limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.”

A Star is Born got robbed. Bohemian Rhapsody was a rather average biopic.

Rami Malek deserved it even though the film itself wasn't anything to write home about.

Just reading today that Bohemian Rhapsody is a mega hit in Japan where they have singalong screenings and probably Freddie dolls and paraphernalia on sale. It's a strange world.

Golden Globes awards lack credibility, they are chosen by the foreign press association who get easily swayed by gifts and perks. Even the professionals treat these Globes as a joke, on occasions the hosts have admitted about the non serious nature of these awards to a drunk audience. Forget Oscars/BAFTA/Guilds, most film festivals like Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Milan etc have a better standing in the entertainment industry.

Only good thing to come out of Globes is some hilarious comedy from Ricky Gervais when he used to anchor in the past.

Golden Globes used to be good when I was growing up..seems.to.be legit going downhill seeing the nominations, A star is Born was nothing special.imho..expected more from.it..

Felt the same with crazy rich Asians...i.mean seriously.

Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians were more of a recognition that black and Chinese minorities had finally made a film about themselves which appealed to a wider audience. You have to judge it by that standard. For example, compare their progress with Indian Americans where their biggest media star is still Apu who is sadly no longer with us.

I didn't know Apu died..but I think Raj from.Big bang theory ,Cece New Girl ,Priyanka Quantico and Kalinda The Good wife(Emmy winner) all have roles..that probably represent Indian Americans.

Also it took so.many years for.Blacks and Chinese(who have been in US for.way longer) so I'm ok with the progress of Indian Americans but clearly Brit Pakistanis aren't..
