Bohemian Rhapsody/Rami Malek

Has opened to mixed reviews where the critics at RT gave it 58% and has an IMDB rating of 8.4 after 11k odd votes. Was really looking forward to this but the main problem is Rami Malek. Whenever I watch whatever he is in all I see is emo, pouting, bugged eyed Malek, be it his role of playing Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman was genius in the original) in the horrible Papillon remake or his role as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

He was perfectly cast in Mr Robot, which I couldn't continue watching anyway as even that went from very good to very bad quite quickly. My point is I cannot focus away from his face and mannerisms in anything he's in and know it's him and cannot immerse myself in whatever character he is playing. Anyone else have a similar feeling?

Mate I watched it on Saturday and absolutely loved it.
Thought Malek was brilliant as Freddie but I suppose not having seen him act in anything else helps..

I haven't watched this yet but Malek's performance has generally been critically acclaimed, from the trailer he seems to have embraced the role as well so not surprised; one hell of a talent. The movie seems to have received mixed reviews though.

I have the same problem with Malek as the OP, his mannerisms seem to chew up the screen and I can't move past that. Most people don't see it that way, of course, which is perfectly fine.

I've no interest in Queen or the song though, so probably won't watch.

This is what I have read as well. The film has been panned, but Malek's performance has won a lot of praise. One critic did say it was worth watching just for the songs which is a good point actually.

Side note: does anyone remember Flash Gordon, the one which had the soundrack by Queen? It was camp as hell but loved it as a kid.

I was looking forward to watching the movie too but after reading bad reviews, I am not going to. I am disappointed as Freddie Mercury was an enigmatic person and his ability and talent was unparalleled. His life story carries the novelistic depths of any tragic hero. So much substance there to make a compelling biopic, sadly floundered away.

I heard that it is a bit of a whitewash, basically like a Queen music videos compilation that makes the surviving members look like the nicest blokes in the world, almost entirely brushing over Freddie Mercury’s very interesting and occasionally sordid personal life which is strongly rumoured to be the main reason why Sacha Baron Cohen left the project.

I haven’t seen the film so I don’t know if the above is true or not, but a lot of the reviews are saying similar. IF that is true then for me it is a tragically missed opportunity.

Baron Cohen should look to make an independent version which focuses mainly on Mercury off the stage.

This is what happened with Joy Division - they along with Ian Curtis were inaccurately glorified in the amateurish, overrated 24 Hour Party People - whereas the later low-key black-and-white piece Control concentrated only a little bit on the music, mainly being about the commerical genius but private failings, touring adultery and hideously unlucky epilepsy of Curtis, ending with his suicide.

Control was, of course, much darker, but also the much better film.
