Boris Johnson will resign as Conservative leader today - he will continue as Prime Minister until the autumn.

A Conservative leadership race will take place this summer and a new Prime Minister will be in place in time for the Tory party conference in October.

One wonders what he will do as PM while the Tories elect a new leader.

British politics in a shambolic position. How can anyone vote for any of the Leaches.

Who will agree to serve in his Cabinet between now and October though? Lol

Surely it should be Raab as Deputy PM who takes over the main role in a caretaker capacity, yes he’s an idiot but at least people would start turning up to work again if he came into post.

Guess Boris getting his comeuppance for supporting Ukraine war effort. Good riddance for some, others will miss him.

Every British PM would have done the same, and so will the next one.

Excellent point. They cannot go back to work for him now.

Every MP that resigned from their minstrel position should be BANNED from any new positions under new Tory leadership. Cannot have hypocritical serpentines in the cabinet or top government positions.

I take a different view.
Firstly, we're going in to the summer holidays and so there will be less noise in the House of Commons.
The world is in a precarious situation with the UK doing particularly badly so a period of stability in the Government, a time to sort out the cabinet and get things ready for October will be calming for the markets.

My money is on Rishi

The net zero and green nonsense, taxation, illegal immigrants etc; will the new Tory leader whoever it is have the courage and political will to grasp the nettle?

Dominic Cummings reckons this is another tactic to somehow cling on.

Regardless the party's over. Boris will look back and rue how he threw away such an unassailable position. Biggest Tory win since 87, an 80 seat majority and winning Labour seats where Tories hadn't even looked competitive in decades. What a self inflicted implosion.

But what does it say about the state of British democracy that such a flawed, unprincipled, buffoonish character with no regard for ethics or standards could reach the top ? That so many could believe his empty promises ?

Rishi sunak will be the new PM. His resignation alongside Sajid Javeds caused the Domino effect of mass resignations. This tells me Rishi sunak and Sajid Javed are highly influential and have the full backing of the cabinet. Rishi will strengthen his position in the coming months and for me will be the new PM.

Rumours of a Blair-Brown type deal being struck in advance, wherein Sunak would enter as PM and Javid would be guaranteed the Chancellor role. They are very close friends and allies.

Russia: We don't like Boris Johnson

The Kremlin is not going to miss Boris Johnson - and say the outbound PM does not like Russia either.
Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian government, said: "He (Johnson) doesn't like us, we don't like him either."

He added that the resignation was of little concern to the Kremlin.

If Sunak becomes PM, he’d be an unelected PM with no public mandate.

Though give it 6 months or so, and Labour/LD will be back to their usual tricks, moaning, complaining, ridiculing the Tories. Rinse and repeat pattern.

Yep. To be honest the political spectrum in this country is a absolute shambles. There's no one trustworthy.

LD and Labour leader crying their eyes out, now they are upset because Boris will stay on until Autumn.

Starmer threatens to call vote of no confidence, potentially forcing a GE.

Bunch of cry babies, these snakes are never satisfied.

But on which grounds Should Boris stay on until Autumn when he's resigned? A caretaker is the only viable option surely! This is A massive damage to the British constitution, he has lost the backing of all the cabinet yet hes still forming the next temporary cabinet by making key appointments

I Do agree, Johnson is in a different league to starmer who is about much use as a chocolate fireguard!

I have never been a Boris hater for some reason, but I always thought he was a guy way that was out of his depth to become PM.

The walloping Johnson gave Labour at the last election probably got to his head that he was invincible and nothing could go wrong.
Well it did and along with his buffoonery and incompetence it’s going to cost him.

He is a populist type figure so the tories will have no one to replace him whoever becomes the new PM so thet are all but doomed in the next election especially with the cost of living crisis going to be directly blamed at them as they are in power and doing little to help those less fortunate.

The walloping of labour was no mean achievement, Corbyn was deemed as a national security threat and no way was going to win a general election!

I totally agree that Corbyn was smeared big time by the UK media however fact is Labour got totally trounced. They lost seats in the North that were always traditionally Labour strongholds.

As soon as the election was over the pandemic hit and the way he handled that was the start of his demise. Like I said he was never the right guy to become PM in the first place but this became more evident with so many crisis hitting one after the other and over the last few years it seemed he didn’t know what to do, other than serving the rich and donor class.

Makes sense. Depends how much MP support they have. They would lose the racist vote of course.

I would go for Tugendhat - he was an Army colonel so has manager skills - but he lacks cabinet experience.

What we really don’t want is someone thick as a brick like Truss or Raab.

Boris Johnson is making a statement outside Number 10 now.

He is met by applause from his most loyal supporters - including Nadine Dorries.

"It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party and so a new prime minister."

"I've agreed with Sir Graham Brady... that the process of choosing that new leader should begin now."

He confirms he will serve "until a new leader is in place".

Boris Johnson continues by thanking those who voted Conservative in the last General Election.

"The reason I have fought so hard over the last few days to continue to deliver that mandate in person was not just because I wanted to do so, but because I felt it was my job, my duty, my obligation to you."

He continues: "I'm immensely proud of the achievements of this government in getting Brexit done, to settling our relations with the Continent... reclaiming the power for this country to make its own laws in Parliament.

"Getting this country through the pandemic, getting the fastest vaccine roll-out in Europe, the fastest exit from lockdown and in the last few months leading the West in standing up to Putin's aggression in Ukraine."

He then addressed the people in Ukraine, saying the UK will "continue to back their fight".

Corbyn smeared himself by not stamping on antisemitism fast enough, and failing to condemn Moscow about Skripal.

Haha Johnson about to go down finally, his fellow cuk supporters having a meltdown :)))

Boris Johnson has said "no one in politics is remotely indispensable" as he announced his resignation as prime minister after less than three years in Number 10.

Speaking from Downing Street, he thanked the millions of people who voted for him and said the reason why he had fought so long to remain at Number 10 was because "I thought it was my job, my duty and my obligation to you".

Mr Johnson said it was "painful not to see it through", but added: "No one in politics is remotely indispensable."

He said he had tried to persuade his cabinet it would be "eccentric" to change prime minister now but "I regret not to have been successful in those arguments".

There had been intense pressure on the PM to quit after more than 50 resignations from the government payroll, and waves of backbenchers appealing for him to go.

The mass rebellion began on Tuesday after Downing Street admitted the PM knew about allegations of inappropriate behaviour against disgraced former Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher in 2019, but still appointed him in February and sent ministers out to defend him.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak were the first to resign on Tuesday night, but over the past 48 hours, MPs from all levels of government piled in their letters and demands for him to go.

Mr Johnson initially insisted he was staying in post, with a source inside Number 10 saying just this morning that he planned to "fight on".

But after new education secretary, Michelle Donelan - who had only been in the post for 36 hours - resigned and his freshly appointed Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi publicly called for his exit, Downing Street confirmed the PM would be resigning today.

Corbyn smeared himself by not stamping on antisemitism fast enough, and failing to condemn Moscow about Skripal.

Forget the Anti semitism allegations, the right wing press said Corbyn was a traitor because he was in bed with the IRA.

That was a total hit piece, one after the other. They didn’t want Corbyn because it was not in their economic interests to have Corbyn.

He was totally smeared by the Uk corporate press in particular and if you don’t think so then I have nothing further to add.

Not every one agrees with these views.

Don’t want to derail the thread, but Corbyn said that the Novichok used in Salisbury by the GRU should be sent back to Russia for testing so they could confirm whether it belonged to them or not. That statement, rightly or wrongly, was viewed across the House of Commons (including by >90% of Labour MPs) as acutely embarrassing and borderline treasonous. Johnson might be a buffoon, but Corbyn was horrendously politically naive and just thick as mince.

But then we have starmer who is a pro zionest at all costs.

As my dear late grandmother once said, always exercise your right to vote even if you put a big cross through the ballot paper and write down “they’re all rubbish”.

I agree that the choices at the moment for voters are all really really poor.

I don’t get it bro, you clearly support Boris but he is Ukraine’s number one political ally & you hold pro-Russia views. It feels inconsistent to me.

It is essential to vote to help with your credit check to and if you have mortgage plans etc

Enough agreed for Labour to lose all those MPs.

If only Labour had elected someone credible to more people, we would have avoided Johnson.

You don’t support Labour, why are you such a big fan of Keir? his personal affairs may be in order but is he really a vast improvement over Boris especially when it comes to foreign affairs. He most likely would be another war mongering weasel like his idol Bliar

Boris’ main issue is his personal amorality, which comes from the British public schoolboy fraternal mentality taken to its nth degree. Mentally he never really left Eton.

Boris is by no means perfect and I do not agree with every decision he had made, Ukraine being one, but as far as Domestic, Brexit, and EU policies go, I fully supported him. Plus Boris was open to talks with Russia, but was reigned in by his own party.

The reality is that every UK PM would have to play second fiddle when it comes to international matters, simply because of Uncle Sam.

For me, Boris got Brexit done, navigated the UK through the Covid crisis, won a mandate with one of the highest majorities, and quite frankly, one of those rare politicians who didn't spend time rehearsing his lines for the camera. A genuine buffoon who ironically appeared more human than most politicians. He fumbled, he stumbled, yes he lied, but so what? All humans do, it was realism on display, and this was his appeal to the masses which is what made him one of the greatest campaigners in modern UK political history.

His interviews on LBC were legendary, and of course his tenure as Mayor of London was one of the best this city has ever seen, in particular with 2012 olympics.

There's no such thing as the perfect PM, and I doubt I would ever agree 100% with any PM, but Boris (and Corbyn) came pretty close for me, but sadly were victims of a brutal and relentless media campaign against them.

There was no media campaign against Boris, if anything the media loved him. Unfortunately saying stupid stuff and showcasing your ignorance during a disastrous few years in power is going to turn voters off. When the economy is in meltdown you don't want to be led by a clown who thinks it's funny to break rules his own govt is enforcing on everyone else.

Boris was not responsible for the economic meltdown, he was not responsible for relentless QE, he was not responsible for high energy prices - in fact Boris pushed Sunak to reduce VAT and Taxes but Sunak refused with a 5p levy on fuel duty - which is why they fell out.

The media was well and truly against him, Party-gate came to the forefront after about a year, what a coincidence! It was nothing but a smear campaign over nothing, other than a group of politicians breaking their own rules, so what, half the country broke covid rules too. Wow, he was a hypocrite, guess what, most humans are.

Raab is in a razor tight marginal - although the Premiership normally bolsters the incumbent MP.

1800 votes in it. You'd expect the Lib Dems to oust him next time, with the economy in the toilet, and the toxicity of Johnson rubbed into him.

While I agree that BoJo finished with next to no credibility, there was an obvious media campaign against him. Especially how they dragged on the beergate fiasco. BBC especially.

Beebs had it in for him as soon as they knew they were about to lose the comfort of the TV license. The last straw was having to deal with Nadine Dorries. They have been anti-govt. since then and likely to be so against any who question the continuation of the tv licensing system.

I voted Labour for a long time. (I changed when they elected Corbyn as I felt the party had suffered a collective break with reality.)

I think Starmer will be a decent PM, if he gets there. He has decades of public service behind him. He occupies much of the same political ground as me.

Regime change of dictatorships was tried and it failed. We haven't the manpower now anyway. These days it's all about defending Europe from Putin.

Certainly don't trust or think starmer is capable.

Starmer is still riding the wave of the Stephen Lawrence case. He has not once presented any meaningful policy of his own, borrowed policies from Corbyn.

He is such a failure, that when Tory numbers were in the dumps, Labour failed to capitalise on Tory losses in the recent council elections.

Liberals will only support Starmer because he is the leader of the opposition party - this is it.

The real danger to the British public right now is the Liberal Democratic party, mercenaries who will side with any party (inc Tories in 2010) for the sake of promoting their poisonous and insidious ideology.

Liberals and Remainers resented Boris for the simple reason he represented Britishness.

As night follows day, Liberals and Remainers lack an identity, lack discipline, lack integrity, oppose democracy and nationalism at all costs - hence LRs rather be subservient to a European fascist regime, the EU.

Enemies of the state.

Boris has been in office for 2 years and 349 days, most of which spent in response to Covid.

Sometimes voters do not decide, but circumstances do.

Nicola Sturgeon needs a wet fish too; absolute cringe-worthy of a leader, and I bet LRs who oppose Brexit, support her in her ambition to secede Scotland from the United Kingdom.

The beergate fiasco was reported heavily because it was a fiasco. That's Boris's fault not the BBC's. If the BBC was anti-Boris, I'm sure the more popular press like the Mail or the Telegraph would have been heavily pro. Boris was popular when he was seen as a gung ho one of the lads types. But when things are going wrong, and you look like you think it's all a bit of a laugh, people tend to give less leeway.

You would be right there.
There is a strong correlation.

Sturgeon will be finished politically and gone if/when she loses the 2nd Scots referendum.

Boris lived by the sword and died by the sword — he was ushered into Number 10 after the ERG performed a not dissimilar hatchet job on Theresa May three years ago.

This is just how the Tory Party operates when a leader has gone past their expiry date. The old fashioned booting out the door. Same thing happened to Thatcher, Major, Duncan Smith, etc.

I still believe, if it wasn’t for the greatest health *crisis* post WW2 - Covid19 - we’d be focusing on Boris’ 2nd term.

Boris did great, UK rolled put the ‘vaccine’ faster than any nation on then planet (exception Isreal), faster than the EU (putting the EU to shame).

Boris is the only mayor to reduce crime in London too, compared to the Labour failure, Sadiq Khan.

Today is such a shame, especially, Nadhim Zahawi, less than 48 hours of Boris appointing him as #11, Zahawi stabs in the back, in public.

To be fair, Boris pulled out of the leadership race vs. May after Gove stabbed him in the back.

News of Boris Johnson's resignation has been met with 'sadness', says Ukraine's president

In the last hour, we told you Boris Johnson held a phone call with Ukraine's president.

During the call, Mr Johnson praised Volodymyr Zelenskyy and said Britain's support for Ukraine will continue for "as long as needed".

Now, Mr Zelenskyy has said his country has "no doubt" that the UK's support will remain after Mr Johnson's resignation.

He added that the news of the PM's departure has been met with "sadness".

The Ukrainian president's office added that Mr Zelenskyy "expressed gratitude" to Mr Johnson for his backing during their call.

Man, Brits are losing it big time. The economy is down in the dumps, the govt is all messed up, they dont know what they want except that they will always be ready to jump and lick the American boots when asked. I will advise them to make it official and become the 51st state of US and let it be United States of America, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Hopefully that will fix some of their economic issues.

Trump can be the president of all of them and they will all flourish economically. Just dont forget to vote for the guy with a dead blonde vulture on his head!

Cheers!

I liked being part of Europe matey, far better than kissing up to Americans on the other side of the world. If Boris had pulled the brakes on Brexit I might have had more time for his stupid outbursts and tally ho shenanigans. Europe is on our doorstep, that should have been where we should have been carving our future, not Mexico or Argentina.

Fair enough, though UK gained its riches from around the world, not its doorstep, who might I add tried to destroy the UK twice in the WWs. I guess its true, keep your friends close, your enemies closer.

Johnson's fall is a just reward for 'belligerent' policy on Ukraine, Russian ambassador says

Boris Johnson's fall has been described as a just reward for a "belligerent" anti-Russian policy of support for Ukraine.

In an interview with Reuters, Russia's ambassador to Britain said Mr Johnson ignored the economic needs of the British people as a result.

"He concentrated too much on the geopolitical situation, on Ukraine," Andrei Kelin said.

"He left behind very much the country, people, state of the economy, and this is what has brought this outcome.

"Of course, we would prefer someone who is not so antagonistic or belligerent."

Earlier, Mr Johnson held a phone call with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said his resignation had been met with "sadness" across his country.

Government will not seek to implement new policies or make major changes of direction, Boris Johnson tells cabinet

Earlier today, we told you Boris Johnson was holding a cabinet meeting.

Lines from that meeting have now started to emerge.

During the session, Mr Johnson made it clear the government would not seek to implement new policies or make major changes of direction.

Instead, the focus will be on "delivering the agenda on which the government was elected", Number 10 said in a statement.

He said major fiscal decisions should be left for the next prime minister.

He added that his "priority would now be to continue delivering on manifesto pledges and making sure the government is on the side of the public, on the cost of energy, transport and housing and all else that matters to them".

On the war in Ukraine, Mr Johnson told the cabinet he has spoken to the country's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier in the day to reassure him that he would continue to do "everything in his power to support their fight".

Members of the cabinet also took a moment to pay tribute to Mr Johnson, "thanking him for his service and highlighting achievements".

The meeting ended with Mr Johnson "urging ministers to retain their focus on delivering for the public and tackling the issues affecting the people of the UK".

This is part of the reason for their success - ruthless removal of anyone who stops being a winner.

Of course another factor is the huge donations from big biz

They are also supported by The Sun, Telegraph, Mail and Express.

If the Beeb becomes critical of them they will just avoid the Beeb and go on GB News instead - created by Murdoch and running at a loss - but worth it to provide tame client journalism for the Tories.

One advantage of Britain Trump losing power is that his successor - hopefully Tugendhat - is likely to adopt a more constructive negotiating approach regarding the NIP with Brussels and Dublin. This will begin to repair our damaged international reputation, and so a trade deal with the Septics becomes possible.

Businesses avoid donating to the Liberal Democrats, cos businesses do not want to lose.

LDs have been the losing party for over a century. Never achieved a thing, or worthy of note, their leaders were either wife beaters or members of Alcohol Anonymous, and when in brief power, albeit a coalition, LDs betrayed their voters with massive U-Turns.

Businesses invest in winners, not losers.

Boris Johnson's plan to remain prime minister after resigning is "unwise, and may be unsustainable", former PM Sir John Major has warned.

In a letter to the Tory 1922 Committee, he warned it means Mr Johnson "maintains the power... to make decisions which will affect the lives of those within all four nations of the United Kingdom and further afield".

It comes as new Welsh Secretary Sir Robert Buckland, a former solicitor general, said: "This prime minister no longer has the political authority to do new things."

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Just to add his 'fumbling and stumbling' is all an act.
