Lets be honest, only colour of the skin can stop Sunak to become the next PM bcoz he is simply on a different level to Liz Truss.

The Tory membership were and are very pro Johnson. Sunak is seen as the root cause of Johnson's demise and I certainly don't believe it being anything to do with his colour.

Neither candidate seized opportunity to show they understand gravity of challenge people face this winter

Analysis by Helen-Ann Smith, business correspondent

The timing of this debate couldn't have been more stark, coming just hours after truly dire warnings from the Bank of England about the sheer scale of the economic challenge this country faces.

It’s forecasted a recession that will last longer than a year, inflation peaking at over 13%, levels not seen since 1980, drops in real terms living standards and energy bills set to be triple what they were last winter.

It's hard to overstate just how bleak the picture is.

Both candidates urgently needed to show they grasp the seriousness of the moment, show they empathise with the many thousands of people facing crisis this winter and show they are offering a coherent economic plan to deal with it.

Whether they did or not is debatable.

Liz Truss first - her opening gambit to the opening question may have raised some eyebrows; when asked what she would do to mitigate the impact of the coming recession, she said that the Bank of England’s predictions were "not inevitable".

You would be hard pressed to find an economist who agrees, given the underlying causes of inflation, the war in Ukraine, the global energy crisis.
She continued to argue that cutting tax and encouraging growth is the way to tackle the economic challenges the country faces, arguing that it isn't the right policy to attempt to balance the books immediately.

Mr Sunak followed hot on her heels and made a point of stressing how vehemently he disagrees.

He argued that "we in the Conservative party" need to "get real and fast", that unfunded tax cuts would make inflation worse.

He argued that he wants to help people with the cost of living, but there weren't any specifics.

The thing is, these arguments are now well trodden.

You could argue that neither candidate really seized the opportunity to show they understand the sheer gravity of the challenge people face this winter.
While there were lots of high level arguments about tax and growth and inflation, there was no direct acknowledgement that targeted packages of support are almost certainly going to be needed this winter or ideas about what they would be.

It might have been expected that the Bank's dire warnings might have shifted the tone of this race - it didn't particularly tonight.

I wouldn't support either of them, but Sunak would give Labour a lot tougher a fight in 2024. Silly from a Tory POV to so overwhelmingly back Truss.

Liz Truss has refused a Conservative Party member's request for her to apologise for proposing to link public sector pay to local living costs - reiterating that the policy was "misrepresented".

Conservative Party member Tom from Gateshead, participating in Sky News' The Battle for Number 10, asked the foreign secretary and Tory leadership frontrunner to apologise for initially planning to introduce a policy which was "actually quite offensive".

Ms Truss refused to do this, repeating that the media had "misrepresented" the proposal and that she is "not going ahead with this policy because of the concerns that have been expressed".

Ms Truss also said a recession is not inevitable after the Bank of England warned Britons face two years of tumbling household incomes with inflation set to soar to more than 13% and the economy plunging into the longest recession since the financial crisis.

"What the Bank of England have said today is of course extremely worrying but it is not inevitable. We can change the outcome and we can make it more likely that the economy grows," she said.

Meanwhile, quizzed on the same topic and as to whether there is nothing he can do about a recession, fellow leadership contender Rishi Sunak told the Sky News programme: "Of course, there is, of course."

He said "gripping inflation" is the most important aspect of preventing a recession, adding: "So what I'm not going to do is embark on a borrowing spree worth tens of billions of pounds, put that on the country's credit card, ask our kids and our grandkids to pick up the tab because that's not right. That's not responsible."

He faced a tricky moment during the special leadership show, with one Tory member heckling: "You knifed Boris for your own interest."

Responding to the comment, which referred to the former chancellor quitting his cabinet role last month that led to a swathe of ministerial resignations, Mr Sunak justified his departure, saying: "The government was on the wrong side of an ethical problem I could not defend."

Mr Sunak also vowed not to concede in the Tory leadership contest despite Ms Truss being ahead in the polls and pledged to "fight incredibly hard 'til the last day" of the campaign.

Asked if he would resign by a Conservative Party member in the audience, the ex-chancellor said: "The quick answer is no, and that's because I'm fighting for something I really believe in and I'm taking my ideas around the country."

Mr Sunak's answer came after surveys carried out by both YouGov and ConservativeHome this week showed Ms Truss extending her lead over him in the race to Number 10.

Ms Truss was probed extensively on her U-turn this week over her public sector pay proposal.

Asked by presenter Kay Burley how she reached the £8.8bn figure as part of her plan if the policy was "misinterpreted", the foreign secretary admitted: "I don't have the details."

She added: "I do accept that the way the policy has been interpreted to cover those people was not right. And that's why I took an immediate decision not to go ahead with it."

On Monday night, the foreign secretary said she would save £8.8bn by introducing regional pay boards instead of national ones to set salaries for civil servants which would have meant paying government employees in poorer parts of the country less than their counterparts in more affluent areas, such as the South East and London.

Experts warned that to reach the sum the plan needed to include the likes of teachers, nurses and police officers.

After the policy sparked outrage from a number of Conservatives, on Tuesday lunchtime Ms Truss's team U-turned on the plans and released a statement insisting "current levels of public sector pay will absolutely be maintained".

Elsewhere during Sky News' special leadership programme, Mr Sunak was also probed on whether he or anyone in his family has benefitted from offshore tax havens.

He replied "no", adding: "I have never benefitted."

Other key points during each candidates' 45-minute long grilling included:

• Ms Truss told the audience: "There are no skeletons in my closet.

• Mr Sunak defended an old video where he claimed not to have any working class friends, saying "we all say silly things when we are younger".

• The foreign secretary said "it would be wrong for us to give away any territory on behalf of the Ukrainians".

• Mr Sunak said an "enormous difference" can be made between now and next winter to reduce the UK's dependence on Russian energy.

• When told by an audience member that her policies are "not sound economics", Ms Truss said "trying to balance the books prematurely is actually counterproductive".

• Mr Sunak defended his plan to charge people who miss GP appointments £10, saying the NHS should be "free at the point of use but not free at the point of misuse".

• Ms Truss said she would support doctors and nurses by "removing some of the central diktats" and by "having fewer layers of management".

• The former chancellor said "yes, I am tough enough" on Ukraine.

• The foreign secretary refused to say whether she would strip the Tory whip from Boris Johnson if he is found to have lied to MPs.

Ms Truss also seemingly carried out another U-turn by rowing back on her previous belief that more homes should be built on greenbelt land to boost the economy.

"I've changed my view on that," Ms Truss said when probed on the matter, adding: "What I've seen is the way these top down targets have resulted in having the opposite effect of getting the homes built.

"And I'm now of the view that what we need to do is have incentives to get local councils to set up investment zones and do things differently, because the current system isn't working."

Meanwhile, Mr Sunak attacked Ms Truss on her economic policies, saying he was not "promising tens and tens of billions of pounds of goodies" in an apparent swipe at the foreign secretary's plans for tax cuts.

He described such an approach as "risky" and said he wanted to "be honest" with the country.

"I want to be straight with the country about the challenges we face and what is going to be required to fix them."

"And that's why I think you can trust me on this because I'm prepared to do that. Even though it's going to cost me politically," Mr Sunak told the audience.

Liz Truss, the Conservative leadership frontrunner, has been criticised after accusing the civil service of having a "woke" culture that "strays into antisemitism".

The foreign secretary also referred to "setting up your own business" as being a "Jewish value".

The FDA union, which represents civil servants, described her pledge to "change woke civil service culture that strays into anti-Semitism" as "inflammatory, insulting and abhorrent".

Is Johnson ignoring Sunak's calls? Politics latest

FDA general secretary Dave Penman said Ms Truss provided "no evidence for her accusation", which he said "goes further than the usual dog-whistle politics" of the ongoing Conservative leadership election.

Tory MP defects to Liz Truss as Rishi Sunak's team brands her cost of living plan 'clear as mud'

He added: "A prime minister is also minister for the civil service, and throwing around such unfounded inflammatory accusations illustrates a lack of leadership, the very thing that she claims to be demonstrating."

In a written statement issued after she spoke at a synagogue in Manchester, Ms Truss referred to "wokeism" in the civil service, adding: "Every organisation has its culture, but it's not fixed, it can be changed.

"That's what ministerial leadership is about: it's about making sure that the policies we represent, the values we stand for, are reflected in what we do.

"I've been very clear with our officials about the positions we take on Israel, and that will continue if I become prime minister."

The foreign secretary also pledged to review whether schools are doing enough to educate pupils and teachers about antisemitism, according to her team, and said university campuses must be "ridded" of the issue.

"So many Jewish values are Conservative values and British values too, for example, seeing the importance of family and always taking steps to protect the family unit; and the value of hard work and self-starting and setting up your own business," she said.

"The British Jewish community is incredibly proud of this country and so are Conservatives."

A source for the foreign secretary's campaign claimed that Labour has been a "talking shop for antisemitism and anti-Zionism" under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer and Jeremy Corbyn.

"This has increased anxieties within the Jewish community," they said.

Labour MPs, including some who themselves are Jewish, also criticised the remarks.

Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols accused Ms Truss of "using the Jewish community as spurious pretext for another baseless attack on the civil service".

Her fellow Labour MP Sarah Owen posted: "Using the serious issue of antisemitism in schools and universities to peddle your anti "woke" war against civil servants is not the solution you think it is.

"Either you're woke - simply alert to social injustice and inequality (including antisemitism) - or you're not."

22000 control more money than the millions across Europe, and in the UK. You can whittle it down to perhaps 4 or 5, but Zionists have full control of Parliament, and the Monarchy in the UK

Got to appease the masters cos its easier to offend millions than 22000, so it may seem!

The woman is such a tool she linked Jews with business owners, Jews themselves then attacked her for being antisemitic. lol.

Zionists own the west, literally. What Boozy Liz really wanted to say in regards to this "Truss questioned whether schools were doing enough to educate pupils and teachers about antisemitism and said she would rid university campuses of anti-Jewish hatred.". Was she will do whatever it takes so Israel can continue bombing kids without criticism in the UK public.

Between 292,000 and 410,000 apparently, depending on “who” qualifies as a Jew.

I was being sarcastic, 22,00 are Israeli born Jews, you know the real Jews born their God given land.

The real figure is around 100,000 imo, Jews who are Jews , not because their grandmother was a Jew. I know a chap who has a Jewish surname but is a Catholic, but still claims to be a Jew. Strange.

This is why I loved Jeremy Corbyn. He refused to kneel before the Zionists. We all know what happened to JC, he became a victim of the ZMSM - UK Branch.

People who wonder if there is Zionist control need to open their eyes. 22000 votes doesn't move the needle, yet her we have Truss, appeasing her masters.

There are more Muslims, Blacks, Christians, Women votes out there - why not appeal to them in their millions instead of 22000?

Less is more, especially when it comes to the ruling class.

The UK's foreign secretary, Liz Truss, has been criticised after saying she will tackle a "woke" civil service culture that "strays into antisemitism", in a statement which also praised Jewish values such as "protect[ing] the family unit" and "setting up your own business".

The FDA, a union which represents civil servants in the UK, described Truss's comments as "inflammatory, insulting and abhorrent".

"The Conservatives have been in government for more than 12 years now and, for most of that time, Liz Truss has been a minister. So accusations of 'civil service wokeism' are a little ironic, given it's essentially a criticism of their own leadership," Dave Penman, the general secretary of the FDA union, said in a statement.

"However, Truss's accusation of antisemitism goes further than the usual dog-whistle politics that has been on display during this leadership campaign when it comes to the civil service. She provides no evidence for her accusation that many civil servants will find both insulting and abhorrent.

"A prime minister is also minister for the civil service, and throwing around such unfounded inflammatory accusations illustrates a lack of leadership, the very thing that she claims to be demonstrating."

In a written statement issued after she spoke at a synagogue in Manchester, Truss, who is one of the two contenders to become the UK's next prime minister, hit out at "civil service wokeism" and said she outlined a plan to "protect British Jewry from creeping antisemitism and wokeism.

"Every organisation has its culture, but it's not fixed, it can be changed," she said.

"That's what ministerial leadership is about: it's about making sure that the policies we represent, the values we stand for, are reflected in what we do.

"I've been very clear with our officials about the positions we take on Israel, and that will continue if I become prime minister."

As part of her plan, the foreign secretary also pledged to "review whether schools are doing enough to educate pupils and teachers about antisemitism".

She also said that university campuses needed to be "ridded" of antisemitism and that she will work to secure a free trade agreement between the UK and Israel.

At the same time, she reinforced her commitment to protecting the British Jewish community.

"So many Jewish values are Conservative values and British values too, for example, seeing the importance of family and always taking steps to protect the family unit; and the value of hard work and self-starting and setting up your own business," she said.

"The British Jewish community is incredibly proud of this country and so are Conservatives."

Charlotte Nichols, an opposition Labour MP, accused Truss of "using the Jewish community".

The criticism was echoed by Sarah Owen, also an opposition Labour MP, who said Truss was using "the serious issue of antisemitism" to "peddle anti-'woke' war against civil servants."

"Either you're woke - simply alert to social injustice & inequality (including antisemitism) - or you're not," Owen said on Twitter.

Most Conservative Party members still prefer Boris Johnson over either of the two candidates vying to take over as prime minister, a new poll shows.

In a head-to-head vote, 63% of party members chose the prime minister compared with 22% for Liz Truss, Opinium found.

When asked about Mr Johnson versus Rishi Sunak, 68% went for the PM, with 19% opting for his former chancellor.

Among the general public, however, the results were reversed, albeit over much smaller margins.

Just less than a third (31%) would choose Ms Truss over Johnson, who attracted 26% support.

With Mr Sunak it was much closer, with 32% backing him, against 31% for Mr Johnson.

In terms of who is likely to win the leadership race, Ms Truss, the foreign secretary, has a 22-point lead over Mr Sunak, the research suggest.

The survey found 61% support for Ms Truss, compared with 39% for Mr Sunak.

Almost three in ten members (29%) said they had already voted, while a further 47% said they would definitely be casting their ballot.

Only 19% are yet to decide who to back, Opinium found.

It means that for Mr Sunak to be successful, he would have to win the votes of all those who remain undecided, as well as a significant proportion of those yet to vote.

Ms Truss is mostly attracting support from older members of the party, the research found.

She has a 40-point lead among those aged over 65, while among the under-50s, she is eight points behind Mr Sunak.

The main reasons members gave for backing Ms Truss were that she was seen as more honest and trustworthy (14%), and that she remained loyal to Mr Johnson (10%).

A further 8% were impressed with her plans for tax cuts and believe she is a better bet on the economy.

Those supporting Mr Sunak chose the same reason - his perceived economic competence.

That accounted for 22% of votes for the former chancellor, while 10% believe he is the most competent and intelligent.

The next leader of the Conservative Party and Mr Johnson's successor as prime minister will be announced on 5 September.

Rishi Sunak accuses Liz Truss of trying to 'avoid scrutiny' over plan to hold budget without official forecast
Having an emergency budget in September - in which she will make long-term funding pledges - has been a key part of the frontrunner's campaign to get into Number 10. The OBR is ready to give a forecast to Ms Truss, but her team says they won't ask for it.

Liz Truss has been accused of trying to "avoid independent scrutiny" as she prepares to hold a budget next month without an official economic forecast, despite one being ready should she ask.

Having an emergency budget in September - in which she will make long-term funding pledges - has been a key part of the frontrunner's campaign to get into Number 10.

The move has been branded "worrying" by an economist and expert in government finance, while the team behind Conservative leadership rival Rishi Sunak accused Ms Truss of wanting "to avoid independent scrutiny".

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) provides forecasts for all budgets as part of the founding law of the body, enacted in 2010.

Despite being funded by the Treasury, it is fully independent.

While the OBR is ready to provide an analysis for Ms Truss if she asks for it, the former Treasury minister - who counts the chancellor and chief secretary to the Treasury among her supporters - wants to go ahead without it.

A Truss spokesperson said: "The cost of living crisis means immediate action is required. A Truss government would seek to act as soon as possible to help people across the UK, by cutting taxes and introducing a temporary moratorium on energy levies."

A source in the Truss campaign told Sky News that a forecast wasn't necessary for a "targeted fiscal event".

But more criticism came from the former head of policy for Margaret Thatcher, the Tory PM who Ms Truss has been accused of styling herself on during the campaign.

Lord Griffiths, who is now a Conservative peer, said: "The Bank of England's devastating outlook for the economy contrasts with Liz's optimism - for her to now prevent the OBR doing proper analysis of the facts would seem to indicate complete loss of confidence in the policy she is advocating."

Truss risks 'dangerous' borrowing levels

Ms Truss has come under criticism for a perceived lack of clarity over her money promises, with veteran former cabinet minister Michael Gove accusing her of taking a "holiday from reality".

She wants to spend £30m on cutting taxes - like reversing the National Insurance rise and cancelling the uplift in corporation tax - using money that economists no longer think exists due to inflation.

Ms Truss has also hinted she may spend more money by providing further help to people this winter, despite previously saying she would not.

Mr Sunak said she would plunge the economy into an "inflation spiral" if she does not choose between tax cuts and providing cost of living support, as it would mean "dangerous" levels of borrowing.

"The reality is that Truss cannot deliver a support package as well as come good on £50bn worth of unfunded, permanent tax cuts in one go," his team said.

Not consulting the OBR for short-term financial measures, like giving help to people over the winter, is not unreasonable, according to Thomas Pope, the deputy chief economist at the Institute for Government.

However, enacting tax cuts without a forecast - especially when one is ready - is a "worrying decision", he said.

"It would be reasonable to make some short-term announcements to alleviate the energy bills crisis without an OBR report because the immediate support package is not so dependent on the long-term outlook," he said.

"But there should be no rush to announce any permanent tax cuts, and any such decisions should be accompanied by the best possible information, which the OBR would provide."

Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, has estimated that if Ms Truss wins, Britain's budget deficit is likely to hit about £170bn in the current financial year, about three times its size before the pandemic.

Liz Truss would be ‘ready’ to press the nuclear button if she becomes PM

Liz Truss has said she would be ready to use Britain’s nuclear weapons and unleash global annihilation.

The heavy favourite to become Britain’s next Prime Minister in less than a fortnight says pressing the button is ‘an important duty’ for people in the role.

At a hustings in Birmingham’s NEC last night, the topic was raised against the backdrop of Vladimir Putin’s war with Ukraine.

Times Radio’s John Pienaar asked about the prospect of having to use nuclear weapons.

He said: ‘Faced with that task, I would feel physically sick, how does that thought make you feel?’

Looking largely impassive and emotionless, Ms Truss replied: ‘I think it’s an important duty of the Prime Minister and I’m ready to do that.’

When pressed on how it would make her feel, she then added: ‘I’m ready to do that.’

Most candidates to lead Britain and prime ministers have claimed they would be prepared to use nuclear weapons in the event of an Armageddon scenario.

But ex Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was criticised for appearing to rule out doing so, since it would lead to millions of deaths.

Yep she is begging to become PM and will do whatever it takes.

Foreign Secretary and Tory leadership contender Liz Truss has pledged to review moving the British embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem if she is elected Tory leader and becomes prime Minister next month.

Ms Truss also warned that if Iran continues to refuse a new deal to restrict its drive to acquire nuclear weapons so that current diplomatic efforts to pursue a new agreement collapse then “all options are on the table” – suggesting she would be prepared to support military action by Israel or the United States to prevent it from getting the Bomb.

Theresa May said the same. Politicians of nuclear armed states get asked this question occasionally, and I’m not sure there is a “correct” answer to it — Truss is getting criticism from one group of people for saying she would press the button, but she would get criticism from another group for saying that she wouldn’t. They have spent £40+ billion or whichever sum it was on renewing the Trident arsenal, which might have been a waste, but if the party leader says she would never use the weapons then it’s definitely a waste and makes a mockery of the UK internationally. So it’s a slightly more complex issue than either a yes or no being the most saleable answer, imo.

I am not anti nuclear, but when Truss talks about shifting the UK embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, and more importantly Iran and the nuclear deal and USA/UK must prevent Iran from obtaining the nuclear bomb, then she is clearly pandering to the Zionist playbook.

Usual drivel just to win support by appeasing the Zionists.

Yes, I think the worrying part is her foreign policy stance in general, whereas the nuclear weapons answer in of itself was not the issue. Truss will be the most right wing Conservative prime minister since Margaret Thatcher.

Here's the thing, Truss was a member of the LD party, so I am not sure how rightwing she is. Heck I am not even sure what she stands for or her motives are - her transition from left wing to right wing must be questioned.

As part of last year's 'integrated review', Russia was described as an 'acute threat' to UK security.

It has been reported that Ms Truss will classify China in the same terms if she replaces Boris Johnson in Number 10.

'She’s been active in calling out China’s economic coercion, working with G7 and other allies to mobilise investment into low and middle-income countries as a counter to China’s Belt and Road initiative.'

We've witnessed the liberal view on PP - accept their view or leave the country.

We've witnessed the liberal view geopolitically - accept the Western values or be bombed.

We are now witnessing the liberal view to war - accept economic, moral, and social bankruptcy - in a bid for proxy war and liberation for a Nazi state - Ukraine.
