Brazil Congress: Mass arrests (1500) as Lula condemns 'terrorist' riots

The US is behind Lula getting elected.

Lula wanted a new currency when Obama was in power, he was attacked. Now US was thinking Lula would go against China and less favourable towards BRICS but he fooled them.

Regardless the Yanks will not want any huge power in South America, see their history in the region, its nothing short of state terrorism messing with their democracy, nothing new now.

If anything the current USA government supports Lula. Bolsonaro is hated by the current USA government. At the moment there is no evidence of any USA conspiracy into what just jam happened in brazil.

Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has vowed to punish supporters of the country's ex-leader, Jair Bolsonaro, after they stormed Congress.

Supporters of the ousted far-right leader also stormed the Supreme Court and surrounded the presidential palace.

But police regained control of the buildings in the capital Brasilia on Sunday evening after hours of clashes.

Arriving in the city, Lula himself toured the Supreme Court building to see the damage for himself.

Justice Minister Flavio Dino told local media that some 200 people had already been arrested.

About 1,500 people have been held in Brazil after supporters of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court in the capital Brasília.

The rioting came a week after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in.

He condemned the "terrorist acts" and vowed to punish the perpetrators.

Mr Bolsonaro has not admitted defeat in October's tight election that divided the nation, and flew to the US before the handover on 1 January.

On Monday, he was admitted to hospital in Florida with abdominal pain.

The Governor of Brasilia is a Bolsanaro ally and was conveniently out of town when this insurrection took place. He allowed roads and buildings to be unblocked, allowing the insurrection, which is basically a failed coup. Brazil’s Supreme Court has removed him from office for ninety days.

Brasília's former public security chief has been accused of "sabotaging" local police forces and failing to stop Sunday's riots in Brazil's capital.

Anderson Torres was dismissed from his role after supporters of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court.

He was accused on Tuesday of leaving the security forces without leadership.

Mr Torres has denied playing any part in the riots.

The rioting came a week after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, widely known as Lula, was sworn in.

The dramatic scenes saw thousands of protesters, some clad in yellow Brazil football shirts and waving flags, overrun police and ransack the heart of the Brazilian state.

On Tuesday, the federal intervenor in public security accused Mr Torres of "a structured sabotage operation".

Its pretty obvious the USA is behind this, as usual interfering with other nations but claiming to some great nation.

No evidence so far that USA was behind this. Usa actually supports Lula over bolsonaro. Zero evidence so far..

I'm almost certain Lula will never be supported by US government.. Bolsonaro might be hated by Democrats but the security prefers him over Lula.

You need to find a hobby, try classes for accents.

I'd rather debate with someone worthwhile but take a read. OF course being an loyal immigrant, you think the USA is a saint, so feel free to get upset and reject.

from the article: "I don’t know this for a fact. It is speculation based on history."

It's a speculation but I do agree that American Establishment wouldn't prefer Lula not because of currency but because of leftist traits..eventhough he doesn't have a single Socialism trait anymore..

We are not going to get red handed evidence if the CIA is behind it but the article makes sense esp with the history of the CIA in South America. I dont think its really about Lula or anyone but to keep Brazil down esp now its part of BRICS. The overall aim of the US towards South America is keep them weak, poor etc.

Not always the case, Majority times socialism creates the downfall of the corrupt governments in South America.

Communism did the same with China till the legend Deng changed the structure and look now. Economic freedom has created wealth from UAE to Qatar, to Sweden to Singapore.

Loved your source. Looks solid.

Brazil's Supreme Court has agreed to include right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro in its investigation into the storming of government buildings in Brasília.

It is the first time that Mr Bolsonaro has been named among those potentially responsible for the 8 January riots.

It comes days after Mr Bolsonaro posted a video questioning the legitimacy of October's presidential election.

Prosecutors said Mr Bolsonaro may have incited a crime by making such claims.

They asked the Supreme Court on Friday to include the ex-president in the investigation.

The Bolsonaro video claimed that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was not voted into office but rather chosen by the Supreme Court and Brazil's electoral authority.

Well it seems Lyla thinks Bolsonaro was involved.

Brazil’s Lula fires army chief in wake of pro-Bolsonaro riots
The dismissal of Julio Cesar de Arruda comes shortly after Lula removed dozens of soldiers from his security detail.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has dismissed the country’s army chief General Julio Cesar de Arruda in the wake of the storming of several government buildings by the supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula did not immediately release a statement on the replacement, but the official website of the Brazilian armed forces said General Julio Cesar de Arruda had been removed as head of the army. The AFP and Reuters news agencies also reported on the firing, citing military sources.

Arruda was replaced by General Tomas Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, who had been head of the Southeast Military Command.

The move comes weeks after supporters of Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court in Brasilia on January 8. Rioters had called for the military to intervene to overturn Bolsonaro’s loss to Lula in the presidential election.

While the USA has since the Monroe Doctrine intervened in Latin American and Caribbean politics more often than in any other region, it’s simpler to think of this insurrection as the populist radical right once again throwing its toys around when defeated in a free and fair election.

Everything is mot a conspiracy. Sometimes it’s the most obvious thing.

I think little is due to conspiracy to be honest. I’m more for the cocq-up theory. Most things happen not because bad people make them happen, but because good people aren’t doing their jobs. For example, the CIA predicted 9/11 and told their White House liaison, but nobody picked up the email.

A Brazilian senator has said the country's former leader, Jair Bolsonaro, was at a meeting about a plot to keep him in power.

Marcos do Val has alleged he was asked to get the head of the electoral authority to compromise himself to discredit the presidential election.

Mr Bolsonaro narrowly lost October's vote, prompting unsubstantiated claims by his supporters of voting fraud.

His son has admitted the meeting took place but denies a crime was committed.

Mr do Val told a news conference on Thursday that he was invited to a meeting on 9 December with Mr Bolsonaro by Daniel Silveira, a former lawmaker and a close ally of the former president. This was more than a month after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had won the election and three days before his presidency was formally approved.

Mr Silveira then allegedly asked Mr do Val to get the head of the electoral authority, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, to make compromising comments on tape that would lead to his arrest.

"I immediately said that I would not do that, I would not do that type of thing," said Mr do Val, who claimed that Mr Bolsonaro "sat in silence" while Mr Silveira laid out the details of the plot during the meeting.

However, he has denied suggestions that he was coerced by the former president, telling journalists he "was in a position similar to mine, listening to an odd idea by Daniel Silveira".

Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered ex-President Jair Bolsonaro to testify over his alleged role in his supporters storming government buildings to protest his election defeat.

Prosecutors say he incited the riots in January by questioning the legitimacy of the election result.

Mr Bolsonaro has been told to appear in court within 10 days.

He left Brazil in December, days before he was due to hand over power, and returned in March.

The former far-right leader's supporters, who claim the election was rigged, rampaged through offices and vandalised artworks in the country's Supreme Court, Congress, and presidential palace on 8 January.

They also camped outside army barracks, calling for a military coup to oust new President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is known as Lula.

More than 1,500 people have been arrested over the incident, including several top officials, but Mr Bolsonaro denies any role in encouraging the riot.

He was in Florida at the time but investigators argue his rhetoric incited the rioters. He repeatedly questioned the validity of the result and said that only God or death could remove him from office.

Lula narrowly beat Mr Bolsonaro in a tense presidential run-off on 30 October, a defeat Mr Bolsonaro never publicly recognised.
