Brisbane Heat have lured teenage leg-spin sensation Shadab Khan to the club for the upcoming KFC BBL season.

The Pakistani, who picked up 10 wickets at an average of 7.50 in a stunning debut T20I series against the West Indies earlier this year, has joined Kiwi Brendon McCullum as the Heat's two imports for this summer.

The 18-year-old, who was a part of Pakistan's triumphant ICC Champions Trophy campaign in June, is currently playing alongside McCullum for Trinbago in the Caribbean Premier League and the New Zealand legend has sent rave reviews back to his former international teammate, Heat coach Daniel Vettori.

"He is one of the most dynamic young spinners in the game and will fit nicely into the style of play that we want to employ this summer," Vettori said of Shadab.

"I know Brendon has been highly impressed with him as a teammate in the CPL and we’re looking forward to working with him when he arrives."

The signing of Shadab means West Indian leg-spinner Samuel Badree will not return to the Heat for BBL|07.

Having impressed in the Pakistan Super League earlier this year, Shadab was handed his first taste of international cricket on Pakistan's tour of the Caribbean in March and April.

His return of 3-7 from four overs in his first T20 match was the most economical figures ever by a player on debut and his haul of 4-14 in the second game made it two player-of-the-match awards from as many games.

Overall, he has 36 wickets in T20s from 23 matches at an average of 14 and an impressive economy rate of 6.10.

Shadab is the Heat's 12th confirmed signing for the upcoming season, leaving six vacancies on their list.

The Heat, who will be without star batsman Chris Lynn for most of the tournament due to shoulder surgery, will open their campaign against the Melbourne Stars at The Gabba on December 20.

Brisbane Heat squad: Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Jason Floros, Sam Heazlett, Shadab Khan, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Lalor, Chris Lynn, Brendon McCullum, James Peirson, Alex Ross, Mitchell Swepson.

Clicked thread initially because I was excited for the guy, but also wanted to point out the creepy opening sentence of the article. I'm sure there are better verbs out there than "lured".

This is so great. The CT really paid dividends in that a lot of our young talent is getting chances to grow with very quality players and programs from throughout the world. Prior to the win I highly doubt they would have been getting the same chances.

Kill it, Shadab. Have such high hopes for him.

Performances on the big stages really helps your reputation and makes you a star

Wish Shehzad had learned this

He is a superstar in his own world only

Atleast Umar had good tournaments initially

Hopefully he will keep on improving and will remain passionate to win matches for Pakistan with so much attention and money he is getting at a pretty tender age.

He has natural temperament. He knows the road to becoming world class.

Good opportunity for Shadab to improve his game and I'm sure working with Vettori will help him with preparing for big games and developing his skills. Vettori always seemed like a very smart player, so hopefully he can pass this on.

Now I just hope that Perth Scorchers signs Hassan Ali for this season. Would love to see his pace and variety on the WACA wickets!

This is excellent for Shadab and a great goodwill gesture from McCullum. Shadab should take full opportunity from these experiences of playing under McCullum as if he is his mentor. Mentoring of players by experienced players has yielded great results in the past, best examples being W&W being mentored by IK.

Shadab's career has skyrocketed since PSL 2017 Mashallah... hope he keeps going higher and higher.

"Fly where eagles dare"

Hopefully he will keep on improving and will remain passionate to win matches for Pakistan.

I seriously think he will. He has this Sarfraz quality in him. Passionate and selfless fighter for Pakistani team. From the first day this thing has attracted me the most about Shadab and one of the reason I rate Sarfraz so highly. Talented to log mil jatay hain but selfless passionate fighters who selflessly put Pakistani team above themselves in every situation kam milty hain.. aur agr talent bhi ho to kia baat hai.

Absolutely delighted for Shadab Khan.He has got all the qualities to be a fantastic all round cricketer. He can bowl, bat and fields brilliantly. On top of that he has got that winner's attitude which I absolutely adore.

Sky is the limit.Only one who can stop him from achieving some amazing feats is Shadab, himself.

Thing that he needs to work on is his balance at the crease. He has this habit of falling over at the crease and hence can be an LBW candidate with that inswinging ball.

The thing I am interested though is how many matches he is going to play in BBL considering he will be playing for Pakistan against New Zealand which will be played from 3-28 January and BBL will run from 19 Dec to 4 Feb.I am not sure if he is going to get too many games at the BBL.He might get to play just around 2 matches.

Three things:

1. This is a great development for Shadab. He is such an exciting cricketer who ticks all the right boxes. In addition to being a real talent, he has a great attitude and seems to be constantly looking to improve his game. He plays with passion and drive and he is now reaping the rewards. The key will be for him to (i) stay grounded and (ii) for the PCB to give him the right support/guidance.

2. McCullum also supported Fakhar Zaman in PSL, so it is great to see him once again go the extra mile in helping young Pakistani talent prosper.

3. It's good to see the National t20 cup scheduling debacle (created by none other than the PCB) hasn't proved too costly in this instance. Only time will tell as to how much it will affect other players/tournaments.

He really does go above and beyond his duty- no wonder he is such a respected figure in world cricket.

This is exactly why McCullum (as well as other players in a similar position) are such a valuable asset in these leagues (particularly in the PSL)- they get involved in player development and aren't just interested in filling their pockets.

Now that so much doors of opportunities all around the world have opened for him, and he is enjoying money and glamour in such a small age, i wish brendon also teaches him ethical and moral attitudes of the game and he stays away from curruption of these t20 leagues.. amir had more in it at this age.. but everything faded away.. he is another talent and should be trained and safe guarded from these currupt evils...

Dont think WACA exists anymore

Perth will have a new ground

The WACA still exists and will be hosting all games in WA this summer including the Ashes test match.

In future major international matches and BBL matches will be played in the new stadium.

Now I just hope that Perth Scorchers signs Hassan Ali for this season. Would love to see his pace and variety on the WACA wickets!

There is no way Western Australia will recruit an overseas quick. Team has a lot of quality fast bowlers who are unlikely to be playing for Australia but no real batting beyond the Marsh brothers.

They'll need a backup of Mitchel Johnson in near future.

They already have the likes of Behrendorff and Paris, who were injured last season.

Essentially, their pace bowling attack would look something like this permitting that the nobody is injured:

Johnson
Behrendorff
Paris
Tye
Richardson

All five cover the aspects required to build a strong T20 pace bowling lineup, hence, I don't see why they would sign an overseas quick.

We have Mitchell Johnson, Joel Paris, Jason Behrendorff, Andrew Tye, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson, Cameron Green and Simon Mackin.

Quicks are the only thing we do have.

Probably Coulter-Nile in for Richo

Supposedly there's an issue now because Pakistan are supposed to be in NZ right when the BBL is happening and Shadab didn't obtain a NOC for this

Shadab a 'real weapon' for Heat

Head coach Daniel Vettori believes new recruit Shadab Khan is set to be a "real weapon" for Brisbane Heat as they look to claim a second KFC Big Bash title this summer.

The Heat will be without star leg-spinner Samuel Badree in BBL|07, however Vettori, who signed a new two-year deal with the franchise last week, insists the all-round package Shadab brings will more than make up for the West Indian's absence.

"Shadab has proven himself in a lot of conditions so far, and the thing we're most looking forward to is his all-round game as well," Vettori said.

"I think people probably underappreciate him as a batsman and as a fielder. For us, having 11 players who can contribute in all facets is really important."

Shadab is only 19 but has already represented Pakistan in all three formats, shining in limited-overs matches particularly.

Vettori, a legendary tweaker in his own right, has been forced to rely on television footage and the word of others, most notably Heat captain and fellow Black Caps great Brendon McCullum, for an insight into the young leggie.

"So far, not a lot of people have picked him," he said. "I haven't seen him bowl live, I've just watched everything from the footage.

"But talking to batsmen around the world, Brendon (McCullum) played with him in the PSL and over in the CPL, and he was saying a lot of batsmen had trouble picking him early on.

"He's got a lot of energy and he bowls at a good pace that will suit the Gabba wicket, much like Badree. That pace they're able to bowl allows them to control and also be attacking, so if he cancombine those two things, then we've got a real weapon through those middle stages."

Vettori said the addition of Shadab, in conjunction with promising Queensland leg-spinner Mitch Swepson, as well as part-timer Marnus Labuschagne and even Joe Burns, all played into the Heat strategy that has been formulated in his time at the club.

"The plan from us, ever since I've been here, has been to try and get as many spin overs in as possible" he said.

"Particularly at the Gabba, because it is a tough place for fast bowlers to bowl."

The Heat earned a home final last season on the strength of their away form, losing that match in a Super Over to be eliminated from the tournament. It was one of four defeats suffered at the Gabba, with just one win.

Vettori said this summer's expanded schedule gives his side a chance to refocus on their consistency.

"With 10 games you get more of an opportunity to take out the variables," he said. "Our goal is to be consistent, and be more consistent at the Gabba; we were probably more an away team last year.

"So to get that ability to come here and understand how to win more often will be a real challenge, and five games takes some of the randomness out of it."

Brisbane kick off their campaign against Melbourne Stars at the Gabba on December 20.

Brisbane Heat BBL|07 squad (so far): Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, Jason Floros, Sam Heazlett, Shadab Khan (International), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Lalor, Chris Lynn, Brendon McCullum (International, Captain), Jimmy Peirson, Alex Ross, Mitchell Swepson, Mark Steketee.

Playing in front of bug crowds in important and competitive games will be vital for Shadab. Also will help boost his confidence further.

Now I'd have to watch BBL just for Shadab
Looking forward to it, really happy for Shadab to get this opportunity to play down under before NZ odi tour.

Hope Hasan Ali, Fakhar Zaman are also picked up.

Our domestic PSL teams should also show same belief in our youngsters by signing Faheem Ashraf, Sahibzada Farhan and Saad Ali.

I hope he misses most of the BBL matches because our NZ tour coincides with it. Nation before league!

Well he will have to represent Pakistan as long as he is selected.

BBL starts 19th Dec and ends 4th Feb.

Pakistan's tour of NZ runs from Jan 6-28, so Shadab will probably miss a high proportion of BBL games.

A number of leg spinners have prospered in the BBL in recent years-Adam Zampa, Cameron Boyce, Fawad Ahmed, Brad Hogg (Chinaman), Mitchell Swepson. There is talk of Sydney signing Afghani bowler Rashid Khan too, but not sure if it will happen.

They have been a crucial wicket taking threat in the BBL, it's been almost a surprise as some thought the control might be an issue but when batsmen are forced to attack, the variety (if you're good enough) can take them out.

Interesting to see how Shadab goes.

IF I was Mickey I'd let Shadab play in BBL until around the 28th-29th at least and then get him to New Zealand because this experience can do him very well.

Yes hopefully he can spend as long as possible in BBL. NZ is very close to Australia as everybody knows so I guess 2 days or so before Pakistan's first match against NZ he can just hop on a flight. Hope he doesn't spend a week with the Pakistan team just training in New Zealand as playing BBL will be better experience for him.

Heat plans for 2018

While he is understood to be at the top of Heat coach Daniel Vettori’s wishlist, the franchise has another battle on its hands to keep Pakistani leg-spinner Shadab Khan.

Pakistan is scheduled to travel to South Africa for a six-week tour in December 2018 and most of January next year, meaning the talented tweaker would again be unavailable for the vast majority of what is likely to be a 14-game home and away season in BBL 08.

Shadab took six wickets in three games for the Heat in December but missed the next seven due to international duty.

He is contracted for next season but it remains to be seen whether both the club, player and Pakistan’s Cricket Board can come to a suitable arrangement.

The Heat is not the only club looking at its international player options with one eye on the ICC’s future tours program.

England has a bare patch over next summer’s Christmas period, which could see Vettori and his list management staff target Mason Crane or Adil Rashid to cover Shadab.

At roughly the same time as Crane or Rashid may be required to tour the West Indies in February 2019, Shadab would become available.
