Gandhi says that the Ram Janmabhoomi movement uses the name of Ram but it has nothing to do with Ram, just as the BJP and the RSS have nothing to do with Hinduism.

The Ram Janmabhoomi movement was not a religious movement; it was a majoritarian or anti-Muslim movement. This is evident from the decisions taken by the BJP, which came to power partly riding on that movement, after getting an absolute majority. The goal of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement is being accomplished through anti-Muslim laws, violence and propaganda.

“The movement which L.K. Advani ji started, that movement at whose centre was Ayodhya, and was defeated in Ayodhya…. I am saying a very significant thing… Congress party and INDIA bloc defeated them in Ayodhya,” Rahul Gandhi said last week while speaking to his party members in Ahmedabad. The import of this statement has been missed by the media and the commentariat.

Gandhi’s statement is not the description of a reality. It should rather be heard as a statement of intent. He said that the Ram temple movement led by Advani, a veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, has been defeated by the INDIA bloc in Ayodhya. He was delivering this speech at a meeting held in Ahmedabad after the attack by BJP workers on the Congress party office. It can be said that Gandhi made this claim to boost the morale of his party members.

The question before us is that if Gandhi made a well-thought-out statement, then what is the meaning of defeating the Ram temple movement?

Gandhi’s statement was about the BJP’s defeat in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency in the recently concluded general elections. INDIA candidate Awadhesh Pasi from the Samajwadi Party (SP) defeated BJP’s Lallu Singh. Ayodhya is part of this Lok Sabha constituency.

The BJP’s defeat by a Dalit candidate, and that too in a place considered to be the epicentre of Hindutva politics, is highly symbolic. This one defeat has forced the BJP to go on the defensive. It was used to the hilt by the opposition in the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha to embarrass the BJP. Pasi sat between Gandhi and Kannauj MP Akhilesh Yadav in the first row where both Yadav and Gandhi kept shaking hands with him. Pasi’s smile was piercing the hearts of BJP MPs. Awadhesh, incidentally, is one of the many names of Ram.

When the news of this defeat came, the BJP scoffed and said that it has not lost in Ayodhya, but in Faizabad. It must now regret the Uttar Pradesh government’s 2018 decision to rename Faizabad district to Ayodhya when the BJP wanted people to forget Faizabad and remember Ayodhya. Ironically, those who opposed the name change now talk about Ayodhya, while the BJP insists on talking about Faizabad. It’s as if it’s natural for the BJP to lose in Faizabad. How could it be defeated in Ayodhya?

Be it Faizabad or Ayodhya, the loss of this seat has riled the BJP. After the defeat in the elections, the BJP and its supporters launched a virulent hate campaign against the Hindus of Ayodhya, calling for their financial boycott because they were ‘namak haram’ (ungrateful). The BJP gave them such a big Ram temple, airport, and whatnot, and the people paid them back with electoral defeat. Can there be greater ingratitude?

After saying that we have defeated the Ram temple movement in Ayodhya, Gandhi also explained the reason for the defeat. The people of Ayodhya rejected the BJP because they were angry with it for taking away their land, livelihoods and making life miserable for them. The reasons, in essence, were worldly. Can we then call it the defeat of the Ram temple movement? Can it be termed as an ideological defeat of BJP?

Gandhi’s statement was part of a speech he was giving to his party members and supporters in Ahmedabad. The Congress had lost badly in Gujarat and BJP workers also attacked its office. As the leader of the party, it is Gandhi’s duty to invigorate his people. That explains his claim that when the BJP can be defeated in Ayodhya, which it had made the most crucial element in its election campaign, it can also be defeated in Gujarat.

Remember, BJP’s chief propagandist Narendra Modi was going around saying that if BJP did not win, then Congress will put Babri lock on Ram temple. The people of Ayodhya rejected this. But the question remains whether it can be called a defeat of the Ram temple movement?

Gandhi’s statement needs to be heard as an expression of the ideological resolve which he wants his own party to understand and adopt.

It was significant that he recalled Advani. By doing this, Gandhi said that the Ram temple should be associated with Advani’s name rather than Modi. He meant to emphasise that this temple came out of a movement led by Advani, when Modi was a sidekick.

Those who have seen the journey of the BJP, and its earlier incarnation Jana Sangh, know that the Ram Janmabhoomi movement was the most important attempt it made to dominate Indian politics. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement transformed the Hindu faith into Hindutva. It popularised a history of persecution in the Hindu minds and turned them into revenge seekers. Who was a Hindu? One who hated Muslims. This is what the Advani’s movement achieved.

The temple movement also redefined the Hindu religion. It turned the so-called ‘Ram Janma Sthal’ into the centre of the Hindu faith. Only those who believe in it could be Hindus. This was accepted by other political parties as well as the courts. This was the biggest political and ideological victory of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). For the first time since its inception in 1925, the difference between Hinduism and Hindutva almost vanished.

Modi’s rise would not have been possible, and words like ‘kar sevak’ and ‘Ram sevak’ would not have become part of the Hindu lexicon, without this movement. It was also because of this movement that the number six coach of the Sabarmati Express burnt in Godhra. We do not know till date how that fire broke, but using that as a justification, a massacre of Muslims was carried out in Gujarat in 2002. That is what made Modi the leader of Advani’s Hindutva.

The Ram Janmabhoomi movement did not end on December 6, 1992; the 2002 riots were part of it. The 2019 Supreme Court judgement allowing a temple to be constructed where the Babri Masjid once stood, before it was demolished by a crowd mobilised by Advani, and the consecration of the temple this year were all part of the Ram temple movement. And the BJP made it very clear that it saw the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as its continuance.

What’s a Ram temple movement? To have a Ram temple?
RaGa has desribed it as follow:

RaGa has desribed it as follow:
Raga forgets how BJP got power, his father squashed the rights of a Muslim Woman named Shah Bano when Supreme Court wanted to give her rights, it’s ok for Raga this is his capacity and it’s understandable when he keeps running away from his constituency to one of Mama’s.

BJP went from 1 seat to this Jughernaut because of that.

RaGa has desribed it as follow:
Of course RaGa will desribe it as an Anti-Muslim movement. How dare Hindus ask for a Temple through legal channels. When they won the case in the court and finally the Temple is built, they call it anti-muslim.

Will RaGa dare call Babur a Hinduphobe? Only one cannot be wrong. If RSS was wrong in demolishing the Babri Masjid, then Babur was also wrong in demolishing an existing Hindu temple to build a Mosque. This is why Hindus in India call out the hypocrisy of Congress and Left. The Muslim appeasement is a known tactic of Congress.

But it was a shock that even after all these events, BJP lost from this very state. I think he is pointing at that.

It is always a fun narrative at top level. Let me expand the details of it.
Ayodhya is a small town in Faizabad district (they have renamed it as Ayodhya now). It was never really a stronghold of BJP.
It has been a swing constituency always.
All the Ram Mandir Hype and 85% Hindu Population might give an impression that BJP would be getting like 70% vote share.
BJP had never even touched 49% vote share in this Constituency.
also, this should help you tone down the assertions and the hyperbole of how relevant Hindutva is in Indian public. It's presence if significant but other factors are also there to compete with it.

INDIA bloc were able to the magic of elections maths which an over confident BJP ignored and seems to be still ignoring. It is not exactly but somewhat similar to what Centre and left parties did to prevent far right Le Penn in French Elections.

You noticed what is the most ironic thing here, the more BJP tried to sell this mantra the more they suffered. You can confirm this from this source here too

The point is one can win elections by playing with emotions once or twice but the same mantra never works always.

But it was a shock that even after all these events, BJP lost from this very state. I think he is pointing at that.
What is shocking there? People are not going to vote for you just because of a Temple. There will always be many other factors.
Religion and Caste plays a major role there along with many local issues.

I am just going by the News. Samajwadi Party fielded a Dalit man and they got the caste equation right. They also managed to put fear into the minds of Dalits and OBC's that if BJP gets over 400, they will modify the constitution and remove Reservations for Dalits, Tribals and Backward Castes. Who wants to give up freebies? Bhad mein gaya religion. BJP has won Ayodhya the last 2 elections. They are fighting anti-incumbency too.

BJP tries to consolidate Hindu vote. Left tries to split the Hindu vote on caste lines.. Its an eternal war. Each will try to undermine the other.

It is true everywhere. Public are not stupid to vote for you just because you built a temple. Samajwadi party got its caste equation right this time.

I do know the stats bhai. When the exit polls were shown, they didn't make one bit sense to me honestly. I knew they had underestimated political maths of opposition joining. I had exited about 30% of my portfolio with the share market spike after exit polls.
:p

I simply know this, people are complex and elections should not be reduced to a reductive analysis as many do which is insulting to free will of the people. BJP got lucky with Pulwama in 2019, they had nothing this time. All the world economies are tethering in weird ways. India is not that immune to that. and BJP was way too cocky. This was evident when they offered literally no tax relief for the common people before the elections. It was their hubris.

Modi didnt get into power on Ram Mandir nor is he getting kicked out of it. Modi came in power on development plank and judgement on it can be subjective on how you want to portray Indian growth story of last 10 years. Article 370 and Ram Mandir were important to significant population, once they got it, people move on to the next necessities. No one in Indian politics is winning by claiming that they will reverse what Modi has done with regards to 370 or Ram Mandir.

What would happen if Babar is found guilty of being a Hinduphobe? Will he end up getting charged for hate crimes and perhaps get some sort of punitive sentence?

Mr Baba is long dead. At least he will not be glorified in the future by people like RaGa.

Rahul Gandhi ‘blackmailed’ voters with fake narrative: Athawale on BJP’s Lok Sabha polls results

The Congress leader created a narrative that the BJP will change the Constitution and abolish reservations if it won 400 Lok Sabha seats, said Union Minister Ramdas Athawale

Union Minister con July 19 said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi "blackmailed" voters by creating a fake narrative that the BJP would change the Constitution if it won 400 Lok Sabha seats, leading to losses to the ruling party in several States.

The Union Minister of State for social justice and empowerment also said despite such moves Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerged victorious and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance got a clear majority with 292 seats.

"In the 2019 general elections the BJP got 303 seats and the NDA got 353 seats. On the basis of work done in the last five years, PM Modi gave the slogan of 'abki baar 400 paar'. However, the Opposition united just for the sake of defeating the PM and spread fake narratives. Rahul Gandhi blackmailed voters but he failed," he told reporters.

Asked how Mr. Gandhi blackmailed voters, Athawale said, "He created a narrative that the BJP will change the Constitution and abolish reservations if it won 400 Lok Sabha seats. People were swayed by this fake narrative and we lost seats in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and West Bengal," the senior Dalit leader and Republican Party of India (A) chief asserted.

The PM considers the Constitution his mother and the BJP and NDA will never change the Constitution, he asserted.

"However, despite such fake narratives, the Opposition could not defeat PM Modi. We (NDA) got a clear majority with 292 seats. The TDP's Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar are with NDA and the Modi government will complete five years," Mr. Athawale said.

He also congratulated Rahul Gandhi for becoming Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Mr. Athawale was in Ahmedabad to chair a meeting to review the implementation of schemes of his ministry in Gujarat.

The social justice empowerment ministry is very important as it looks after the welfare of weaker sections of society and ensures their social and economic upliftment, Mr. Athawale said.

"In the last 10 years we have taken 25 crore people out of poverty. In the next five years, we will try to bring out the rest. The upcoming Union budget will ensure growth of every section of society," he said.

Honestly, it was a fake narrative anyways.
Indian Judiciary is way too powerful that has nullified amendments passed by literal super majority and ratified by all states in the past.
No amendment passed by BJP with even 500 seats would have made India a "Hindu Rashtra" as that goes against the "basic Structure Doctrine" set long ago by the Supreme Court.

Here is the list of "basic" features of the Constitution which can never be removed.

  1. Supremacy of the Constitution
  2. Rule of law
  3. The principle of separation of powers
  4. The objectives specified in the preamble to the Constitution of India
  5. Judicial review
  6. Articles 32 and 226
  7. Federalism (including financial liberty of states under Articles 282 and 293)
  8. Secularism
  9. The sovereign, democratic, republican structure
  10. Freedom and dignity of the individual
  11. Unity and integrity of the nation
  12. The principle of equality, not every feature of equality, but the quintessence of equal justice;
  13. The "essence" of other fundamental rights in Part III
  14. The concept of social and economic justice — to build a welfare state: Part IV of the Constitution
  15. The balance between fundamental rights and directive principles
  16. The parliamentary system of government
  17. The principle of free and fair elections
  18. Limitations upon the amending power conferred by Article 368
  19. Independence of the judiciary
  20. Effective access to justice
  21. Powers of the Supreme Court of India under Articles 32, 136, 141, 142

BJP wants to finish rights of Muslims, Dalits: Mehbooba Mufti on UP government’s Kanwar Yatra order

Mehbooba Mufti, during a party function in Srinagar, said the country’s Constitution gives equal rights to all

The Uttar Pradesh government’s order making it mandatory for eateries on the Kanwar Yatra routes to display the name of owners has prompted a sharp reaction from Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, who on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government — accusing it of wanting to finish the rights of Muslims, Dalits and other backward groups.

Mufti, during a party function in Srinagar, said the country’s Constitution gives equal rights to all, adding, “There is no discrimination on the basis of name or religion. Our Constitution is just to all. The BJP government is tearing to shreds the same Constitution.”

The former chief minister said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was right in calling the BJP’s alleged intention “finish the constitution” were they to cross 400 seats in the recently held Lok Sabha elections.

“But they did not learn their lesson. From 300 seats, they came down to 240, but still they are not learning and are going against the constitution. They are doing such practice which is creating discord in the country,” she said, adding that the people who voted for them in the election may have also gotten the hint that they wanted to “finish” the Constitution.

Most of the Paksitani posters don't realize this one bit. Modi is consistent rise and strength for the last 10 years was mostly thanks to utterly inept attitude of Mr. Rahul Gandhi!

Had Rahul Gandhi left politics, Modi would have very lost in 2019 itself.

Many Indians also focus too much on Modi. Modi had his rise and will also have his downfall. Every sunrise has a sunset. Modi came because there was a need among people for a certain politics. Modi did not come and create his own demand. Modi will be replaced when people need someone else. Hindu centric politics is here to stay, whether Modi is there or not. Of course there are counter currents, and there is no clear winner. But the water will finds its way.

This is such a brilliant post. Take a bow. It explains ind constitution and country in a nutshell. Pak posters here will never understand this as they have never seen true democracy and lived in a banana republic. Having said that- is ind perfect? For sure no. It still has some way to go but atleast the foundations are pretty healthy.

Mamata, kejriwal have pm ambitions .pawar was after money but here above two are after pm post
There is no Pan-India organization other than the Congress and BJP under RSS.

Congress has bound its fate to the Gandhi family forever, with this minor jump Rahul has earned another 10 years as "future PM of India" :p. Congress will never get back into power on its own and Pappu will never be PM, and someone like MMS or Deve Gowda/Gujral will be made PM again. Best chance of coalition PM will be from the states of Andhra or TN as they will rarely have mass appeal to dominate others. A silent, perceived clean and docile compromise pick always.

RSS will churning out a mass leader through its internal worker system. Vajpayee, Advani came from the same system, so did Modi and Adityanath. I expected Yogi to take reigns from Modi in next elections but the heavy setback in UP should end Yogi's PMO dreams. We might see altogether new also the RSS tends to retire its leaders around 80
It might seem impossible now but people were hardly talking about Modi till 2012/13.

All the ‘corrupt’ have joined BJP and ringmasters sitting in Delhi: Sanjay Raut

A day after Amit Shah described NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar as the “ringleader of corrupt”, as his nephew Ajit Pawar kept mum, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said on Monday the Union Home Minister should introspect which party has roped in all the “corrupt” leaders, who has given them the prime positions, and who the real ringmasters are.

On Sunday, Amit Shah called Sharad Pawar the ‘biggest sargana of corruption in Indian politics’ and also alleged the veteran leader has “institutionalised corruption” in the country. While addressing the two-day conclave of BJP workers in Pune, Shah also targeted Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

“The Home Minister should pause for a moment and then he will find that the real ringleaders of the corrupt are sitting in Delhi. He and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should look in the mirror while they are in Delhi. They will instantly spot the ringmasters of the corrupt leaders…” Sanjay Raut, spokesperson for the Shiv Sena (UBT), told The Indian Express.

BJP's 'anti-India friends' jab as Rahul Gandhi meets US lawmaker Ilhan Omar

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's trip to the United States sparked a firestorm back home for the third day in a row as BJP leaders sharply criticised the Leader of the Opposition for meeting controversial American lawmaker Ilhan Omar.

Omar is known for her critical stance on India and has been accused in some quarters of holding an ideological bias when it comes to her views on the country. She was among several US lawmakers who Rahul Gandhi met on Tuesday during his three-day US visit.

The meeting sparked criticism from BJP leaders in India. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Rajya Sabha MP and BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "Rahul Gandhi is known for spewing anti-India venom, but what he has done this time is concerning. He became the first Leader of the Opposition to meet US MP Ilan, who is infamous for taking anti-India stand."

"He has further added another feather to the cap of his anti-India friends," Sudhanshu Trivedi said, adding, "Rahul Gandhi is not acting childishly, but dangerously. He is now doing what anti-India elements would love.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also joined the criticism, saying in a post on X, "Why did Rahul Gandhi have to meet her? Why is he engaging with the most radical anti India elements on every foreign trip? In BJP virodh - desh virodh is ok?"

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also condemned Rahul Gandhi's meeting with Omar. He said in a post on X, "Even Pakistani leaders would be more circumspect about being seen with such rabid elements. Congress is now openly working against India."

CONGRESS REACTS TO BJP'S ATTACK

The Congress defended the meeting, saying that Omar was part of the US delegation that met Rahul Gandhi.

“BJP leaders heard the name of Ilan Omar for the first time today. She’s a Congresswoman and came as part of the delegation,” Congress leader Pawan Khera told India Today TV.

Talking about the Gandhi scion’s remark on the Sikh community, Khera said, “Rahul Gandhi did not make any statement against the Sikh. He has repeatedly raised the issues of different communities, about how there is hate in the country, how an elderly man was beaten on a train, how a boy was lynched on suspicion of being a Muslim...”

He then went on to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over the unrest in Manipur.

“The Home Minister and the Prime Minister should get out of social media and come to the ground... They should answer if they consider Manipur a part of the country or not, whether they will visit Manipur or not,” Pawan Khera said.

RAHUL GANDHI'S MEETING WITH US LAWMAKERS

On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi met several US lawmakers at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington in a meeting hosted by Congressman Bradley James Sherman. The representatives he met include, Jonathan Jackson, Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Barbara Lee, Shri Thanedar, Jesºs G 'Chuy' Garca, Ilhan Omar, Hank Johnson, and Jan Schakowsky.

Ilhan Omar, who is the representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, attracted criticism last year after urging the US to "fully support" Canada's investigation into alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Niijar.

Ilhan Omar, a Somali American, had said in a post on X, "The allegations that Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Niijar was assassinated by the Indian government are deeply concerning. The US must fully support the Canadian investigation. We are also requesting a briefing on whether there are similar operations in the United States."

Omar was also among the US lawmakers, who had boycotted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address at the joint session of the US Congress in June last year, accusing PM Modi of "repressing religious minorities".

In 2022, Ilhan Omar visited Pakistan, where she met several political leaders, including Shehbaz Sharif and Imran Khan. During her visit, she also visited Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). Omar's visit was funded by the Pakistani government, covering her accommodation and meals.

India had criticised her visit and called it "narrow-minded politics."
