SAN DIEGO — Four people were struck in a shooting at a Chabad synagogue in Poway, a northern suburb of San Diego, law enforcement sources told NBC News.

The violence, reported shortly before 11:30 a.m., took place at Chabad of Poway, which had promoted an 11:00 a.m. "Passover Holiday Celebration" online. The Chabad synagogue serves as a community center for ultra-Orthodox Jews.

The extent of the injuries were unknown. Motive was also unclear.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department stated on Twitter, "A man has been detained for questioning in connection with a shooting incident at the Chabad of Poway synagogue."

Sheriff's Sgt. Aaron Meleen told reporters at the scene there were "varying" injuries and that the victims had been hospitalized. "We’re confident that there are no shooters that are outstanding."

Speechless. I hope no one lost their life.

However this news has the potential to be explosive if it not already.

Attack at Mosques, Attack at Churches in SL, and now a Synagogue! All in the space of a short time.

World gone mad.

Very strange that disparate places of worship have come under attack, all different religions other than being Abrahamic rather than Dharmic. California seems like another soft target as well like Sri Lanka. Could be the tourism industry in those countries is being targeted.

Not really surprising given it’s the USA - every other day it seems there is a mass shooting over there. And all we hear in response is statements like “thoughts and prayers to the victims” and then the cycle is repeated soon after.

Totally shocking
The total is not that shocking but still
These news stories keep popping out

A far right terrorist by the sounds of it.

Gunman not terrorist. He's white.

US synagogue shooting: One person dead in Poway, California

A gunman has opened fire at a synagogue in California, leaving one woman dead and three other people injured, police say.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested after the attack at Poway, north of the city of San Diego.

The synagogue had been hosting a Passover celebration when the shooting took place, reports said.

Police have not suggested a motive but US President Donald Trump said the attack "looks like a hate crime".

The shooting comes six months after a gun attack killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. It was the worst anti-Semitic attack in recent US history.

America's gun culture in 10 charts
San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore told reporters that investigators were reviewing the suspect's social media activity and examining an open letter published online.

Authorities later named him as John Earnest, the Associated Press reported, and said he was also under investigation in connection with a fire at a mosque last month.

"During the shooting, four individuals were wounded and transported to Palomar hospital," Sheriff Gore said. "One succumbed to their wounds. The other three are in stable condition."

Mayor Steve Vaus said the rabbi had been shot in the hand.

"For this to happen only a week later at the end of the Passover, only a week after Easter is horrific," he told MSNBC.

How did the attack happen?
Sheriff Gore said officers were called to the Chabad synagogue just before 11:30 (18:30 GMT) after the man opened fire with an "AR-15 type" assault rifle.

He said an off-duty border patrol officer fired at the suspect as he fled the scene in a vehicle, but did not hit him.

The suspect was later arrested by another officer, added San Diego chief of police David Nisleit.

"He clearly saw the suspect's vehicle, the suspect jumped out with his hands up and was immediately taken into custody." he said.

"As the officer was placing this 19-year-old male into custody, he clearly saw a rifle on the front passenger seat of the suspect vehicle."

On Saturday evening a vigil for the victims was held at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church in San Diego.

Speaking at a rally in Wisconsin, President Trump denounced the shooting as a "hate crime" and said "America's heart" was with the victims.

"We forcefully condemn the evil of anti-Semitism and hate which must be defeated," he said.

Minoo Anvari, whose husband was inside the synagogue, told the local CNN affiliate that the congregation was "standing together" in the wake of the attack.

"We are strong. You can't break us," she said.

Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter that she was "heartbroken" by the news.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles officials said police patrols would be stepped up around synagogues and other places of worship following Saturday's attack.

Gunman not terrorist. He's white.

They’ll say - took no time to declare and popularise that the guy is “White”. While the Sri Lankans took days to confirm that it was Islamic terrorism. And yet, there were people asking not to focus on the religion.

You’ll say - why is he being called a gunman and not a terrorist?

Rinse and repeat. Each time.

If "they" say that then they're incredibly dumb and ignorant. The Sri lanka bombings were done by suicide bombers not a gunman, it takes more time to identify them. Also, the gunman was caught alive further showing he's white. That's the only proof you need.

Shooter is 19 years ago. What could have got into him?

Please refrain from making confusing posts just to further your personal prejudices. Where is the context for Dharmic/Native American or any other religious branch vs Abrahamic? The shooter "John Earnest" is also Abrahamic. Seems like you use the word Abrahamic every time you want to conveniently align yourself to non-Islamic Judeo-Christian faiths to take shots at your perceived "enemies" aka anything associated with India/Hindu/Dharmic and whatever else.

Let's not beat around the bush - we have a President in office who refuses to say white nationalism is a growing threat and described neo-Nazi marchers in Charlottesville as "very fine people".

The Trump Administration disbanded a unit in the DHS focused on domestic terrorism right before this despicable synagogue shooting - https://www.thedailybeast.com/homeland-security-disbands-domestic-terror-intelligence-unit

We need an administration that'll actually put the money and manpower into fighting far-right terror instead of coddling it.

Great points, absolutely agree!

A Colorado man has appeared in court for allegedly plotting to bomb a synagogue in a case US prosecutors describe as "domestic terrorism".

According to court documents, Richard Holzer planned to bomb the Temple Emanuel synagogue in the town of Pueblo as part of a "racial holy war".

Following a sting operation, the 27-year-old met FBI undercover agents to visit the temple and plan his attack, prosecutors say.

Mr Holzer has not yet entered a plea.

During his court appearance he requested a court-appointed lawyer.

FBI special agent John Smith said in an affidavit that Mr Holzer had "used several Facebook accounts to promote white supremacy ideology and acts of violence".

He told undercover officers that he used to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) - one of the oldest white supremacy groups in the US - and was now a skinhead.

Mr Smith detailed instances of Mr Holzer threatening mass violence and using racial epithets against Jews and Hispanics.

Mr Holzer was arrested on Friday and admitted to planning to blow up a synagogue that evening with pipe bombs and dynamite, prosecutors say.

He faces charges of attempting to obstruct religious exercise by force using explosives and fire.

Following a mass shooting in El Paso Texas in August - which is being treated as a hate crime - more than two dozen people were reportedly arrested in three weeks over threats of mass violence.
