Can Pakistan win the World Cup in 2019?

I'd say Pakistan are overwhelming favourites.

Their bowlers have always prospered in English conditions, and even 200 - 250 is good enough to defend.

Yes we will go into that tournament as joint favorites along with India.

England, SAF, NZ have shown they are not good enough to win ICC tournaments whilst Australia are weak right now.

Yes, Pakistan can win in 2019, but if things carry on as they are at present, a few teams will be capable of winning, including India, England and Australia.
Much as the performance of Pak was very good in the CT, there are a few areas of concern.
Sarfaraz needs to bat higher up the order to take advantage of his strike rotation and boundary hitting skills.
Also we need to find an explosive batsman to replace Malik or Hafeez: I can't see the value in both these ageing batsman playing in the 2019 tournament.
The bowling, however, is looking increasingly strong, especially with the strong performances of Shadab Khan in the CPL. He gives us a strong spin bowling wicket taking option along with our battery of high class pacers to put us in a very strong position for 2019.

Will have to look at what form batsman and bowlers are in 2019 then its possible to say more clearly but right now they look one of the contenders to win wc 2019

Can they ? You never rule out Pakistan. Ever.

Will they? Ridiculously early and ridiculously arrogant to say they will. Luck is a key factor in any tournament victory. And luck is in the hands of Allah.

the events that can happen between now and 2019

1. premier pakistani players involved in some serious career ending scandal

2. loss of form. in fighting resulting in player bans and ouster

3. nawaz sharif finally finding the answer of the question that why he was ousted from the government

4. complete overhaul of the cricket board with a new government and new shenanigans

5. meteor strike. time travel. artificial intelligence taking over the world ... etc. etc. etc. etc.

6. a career ending injury to some important player

7. butt being inducted back to the team and reaching a leadership position

I feel Pakistan will stick with the Azhar Ali, Hafeez and Malik because no matter the context they will want to stick with the "Winning Formula" however this will bite Pakistan team up the a**. While other teams would have bolstered , Pakistan will be stuck with some oldies and only 1-2 good batsman because at the moment it is just Fakhar Zaman carrying the batting, if bumrah had not overstepped lets make no mistake with the one man army gone it would have been match over.

Pakistan needs 3 better batsman: one opener to replace AA, a number 5 to replace Shoaib Malik and a number 6/7 all rounder like Yamin who can play the Abdul Razzaq role to replace Hafeez who despite performed well in the final is simply beyond his sell by date.

Anyone who thinks Pakistan will win with the current batting line up whilst other teams have bolstered need to stop getting carried away.

Well there is still a little under 2 years left. Depends on how we do following the CT victory. We looked like turning over a new leaf post 2009 T20 world cup victory as well and we got worse in t20s and LOIs by 2012. So it depends on how we move forward with this win, I.e. how many of the players who helped lift the trophy can stay in form / not get found out by that time.

While we did win the recent tournament have to keep in mind other teams who look better on paper. Then again, paper is paper, not real life.

But overwhelming favorites would still be England followed by Australia for their stellar WC record. I'd put us 3rd atm tied with India.

No. Personally Pakistan is more likely to fail against Zimbabwe than win the WC, and by quite a margin.

They have always been too inconsistent to count on. They can be world beaters one day, minnows the next. Anyone who thinks they're the favourite has tunnel vision and forgot the last five years due to one tourney.

Sharjeel Khan
Babar Azam
Fakhar Zaman
Harris Sohail
Sarfaraz
Dynamic batter
Fahim Ashraf
Shadab
Aamir
Hassan
Junaid / Ruman

This team can make it to semis .

Why not? You need one batsmen and two bowlers to have a great tournament to reach at least the SF. It's in England, so England most likely will choke again.

Id say current Pakistani team is one of the favourites along with Eng/Aus. They have probably best bowling unit and their batting is also shaping up nicely.
If they can somehow perform like champions trophy then i dont see any side that can stop Pakistan, only perhaps Aussie can.

On the other hand, Indian side with Dhoni and Yuvi...

pretty much this, plus sahibzada, one more backup pacer or specialist spinner

Get rid of the oldies and Pakistan can certainly win. As MMHS has mentioned though Pakistan could go to the WC with a overaged squad like the 2015 WC. If that happens it could be difficult for Pakistan to win. But you can never say never with Pakistan.

I named the playing XI for England , not the squad.

That team has three main fast bowlers plus fahim as seam bowling option.

Babaar , harris and shadab can be spinners.

Batting has depth.

Pakistan need to work on hitting ability of Hassan and Aamir a bit . Also work on bowling of fahim a bit. It will be very good squad.

We certainly can but no point making predictions 2 years out as a lot can happen in that time.

I think the format is all 10 teams in one group, everyone plays each other once then 2 Semi Finals and a Final. Most likely England, India and Australia will make the semis and the 4th teams that makes it will probably be out of Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand. If we can keep our players fit we certainly can win the WC as we won the Champions Trophy which had all of the 8 top ranked teams. The WC will be the same teams in the CT + 2 other teams, most likely West Indies and Afghanistan. And Pakistan beat England and India in the semis and in the final respectively so we definitely have a chance. However, it is far away, it will be interesting when this thread is bumped closer to the 2019 WC

Yes they can but will they, we don't know.

Pakistan has always performed better in England so the chances are better. If the World Cup was in Australia, I would have said no.

If Hassan Ali manages to improve his batting, no doubt we will have a very good batsman to finish of the innings. We have already seen glimpses of his batting vs West Indies in the test matches. He also has a very good cricketing mind on his shoulders, which will no doubt carry Pakistan forward as a cricketing nation. If Pakistan can manage to keep this momentum going forward no doubt they will be considered as serious contenders to win the WC19. Another key factor is that whether Imad Wasim improves his bowling variations and batting skills. He was very poor in the CT17 with the ball. Its very easy for batsmen to play him because he only has one delivery in his inventory. Lastly the PCB needs to selects players on the basis of performance, if certain players are not performing don't be afraid to drop them. Players who don't reach the standard set by the coaching staff need to be dropped.

Get the younguns in, Malik and Shoaib out.

Like I've been saying this is the best talent pool we've had since the 90s. We just need to invest.

Post of the Week for me.

The team which won CT played at 70% of its talent's strength. I would like atleast 3-4 changes it that 15.

In the meantime I would like us to score 300+ runs in next 2 years.

Any team can win the World Cup. You never know. Kenya reached the Semi Finals in the 2003 WC, Sri Lanka just beat the favourites India convincingly in a Champions Trophy match only to go on and lose to Zimbabwe in a series at home who had lost a series to the likes of Netherlands. My point being that it you can't judge or predict too easily. Especially with Pakistan.

The most important point being, cetiris paribus, our batting solely relies on the performance of a man who's played 4 games in his career. Azhar Ali starts the innings like he's playing in swinging conditions against the West Indian bowlers of the 80's regardless of where or who's he's playing. Hafeez is a cancer to the team and Malik's WC average + record in England is beyond abysmal. Also, the PCB would like to play the winning team in the WC too completely ignoring that we'll be playing 3 batsman near 40 who will not only be a risk in the batting but poor in the field.

Form matters a lot when any team plays in a major ICC tournament. One bad game and the team is out in knockout stages.

Also, all major players need to be injury free.

If Pak plays at the same level like they did in the final 3 games of CT 2017, then they have a good chance of making it to the finals. Lots of ifs and buts.

Pak found some really exciting players recently in Hasan ali, Shadab khan, Zaman etc. it will be interesting to see how many of them will still be in the squad for the 2019 WC.

A string of failures and players will be dropped. New players might come in and who knows how they perform.

Pak has the ingredients to go deep in the tournament as of now.

Of course we can. Need to sort out a few problems in particular the fielding and batting needs to improve as well. I have faith in Sarfraz, we are in with a good chance.

Pakistan have the capacity to become dominant in this format. Need batters who can score 300+ runs frequently.
