The 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will take place in St Kitts & Nevis in its entirety, with all 33 games being played in the Federation. The tournament will get underway on 28 August with a similar format of games that worked so successfully in 2020 and delivered a record audience of over 500million.

Last year the tournament was successfully staged in a bio-secure bubble and the Hero CPL operations team will again be working closely with the tournament’s medical advisors, local agencies and the St Kitts & Nevis government to ensure the health and safety of all those involved in the tournament as well as the local population. St Kitts & Nevis has no COVID-19 transmission and is one of the safest places to visit in the Caribbean.

Warner Park has been the scene of some of the most iconic matches in Hero CPL history and this quick scoring ground will be an ideal venue for the tournament and fans can expect explosive cricket. From Chris Gayle’s brilliant hundred against the Jamaica Tallawahs in 2019 to Andre Russell’s even more explosive century against the Trinbago Knight Riders in 2016, Warner Park has had some classic individual performances. There have also been some amazing matches, not least the game that went to a Super Over finish between the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and the Knight Riders in 2019.

Hero CPL has provided outstanding exposure for the Caribbean with each season bringing a huge positive economic impact and highlighting the region as one of the must visit tourism destinations. With the tournament set to take place in St Kitts & Nevis in its entirety the Federation can look forward to even more focus on what makes it one of the world’s premier tourist destinations.

This year’s tournament takes on extra significance with it taking place in the lead up to the ICC T20 World Cup and West Indies and overseas players will be using this opportunity to push for selection for their international teams.

Pete Russell, Hero CPL’s COO, said: “We are delighted to be able to announce that we will be having the Hero CPL in St Kitts & Nevis in 2021 and we would like to thank those involved in welcoming the tournament to this wonderful country. As was demonstrated during the 2020 tournament the CPL is a massive boost for the host country with US$51.5million delivered in sponsorship value for Trinidad & Tobago. We are really looking forward to giving St Kitts & Nevis the exposure they deserve.”

The Hon. Jonel Powell, St Kitts & Nevis Minister for Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, said: “We are greatly confident that the hosting of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in St. Kitts & Nevis in 2021 will stimulate much-needed economic activity, especially for small and medium-sized local businesses. As it relates to COVID-19 we will maintain our vigilance to ensure that our health protocols are not compromised and that the country remains protected from any serious spread of the Coronavirus. It will most certainly help to revive the tourism sector that has been struggling for over a year, under the weight of the deadly COVID-19 global pandemic. Therefore, the economic impact is forecast to be significant.”

The Trinbago Knight Riders have announced the players they are retaining ahead of the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) which gets underway in St Kitts & Nevis on 28 August.

The Knight Riders have held on to 13 of the players who saw them complete a perfect season in 2020, winning all 12 of their matches to claim a fourth Hero CPL title.

The team will be led by Kieron Pollard, Wisden’s leading T20 cricketer in the world, with Colin Munro, Lendl Simmons and Darren Bravo back after fantastic performances last season.

The Knight Riders also welcome back Zimbabwean international Sikandar Raza and USA fast bowler Ali Khan, both of whom performed very well in 2020.

Sunil Narine has been a franchise player and a champion for the Knight Riders. Although he struggled with an injury in the 2020 season, the Knight Riders have retained him and will expect him to be at his best for this season. TKR will be hoping for more appearances from the mystery spinner who has bamboozled batsmen around the world.

With a strong contingent of young Trinidadian players rounding out their squad, the Knight Riders will be hoping to carry their outstanding form into the 2021 season.

They have four more spots to fill in their squad and these will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

IPL 2021 Phase 2 in UAE – BCCI to request Cricket West Indies:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday has officially announced that IPL 2021 remaining matches will be played in UAE in window between September – October. Though the confirmation to conduct the IPL games in UAE has been made, but the exact dates for IPL 2021 Phase is not announced. Reason, BCCI is not sure about availability of the most of the foreign cricketers in IPL 2021. England has already said no, cricketers from New Zealand, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are also doubtful, so are the players from the West Indies. According to the information available with InsideSport.co BCCI will now put in a request to Cricket West Indies to prepone Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2021) by week to 10 days.

IPL 2021 Phase 2: Why BCCI will request Cricket West Indies to prepone CPL 2021?

It is worth noting that CPL 2021 start from 28 August and end on 19 September. IPL 2021 is likely to start on 15th September. The CPL players can only arrive in UAE by 20th September and along with mandatory quarantine period of minimum 5-7 days the West Indies cricketers will easily miss half of the remaining matches – this is the reason BCCI has decided to request CWI to prepone CPL by 7-10 days.

“We will speak to all the boards about the availability of their players. We will also speak to Cricket West Indies, we always had great relationship with everyone and we are confident some solution will come out in the next few days”, said one of the top BCCI official after attending the BCCI SGM today afternoon.

Via CWI:

Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will continue to offer development opportunities to some of the best young West Indians in the ninth edition of the CPL, which takes place in St Kitts later this year. Since 2019, and for the third consecutive season, twelve (12) players have been drafted, retained or signed into the two mandatory Emerging Player positions in each of the six CPL franchises.

Each CPL franchise will have to field an Emerging Player a minimum of five times during the tournament, ensuring that these players get at least some competitive playing experience and the opportunity to train with some of the best players and coaches from across the Caribbean, and around the world.

The list of 12 retained and drafted players includes recent West Indies Men’s Test and T20I debutants Joshua Da Silva and Kevin Sinclair who will feature for the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Guyana Amazon Warriors respectively. At relatively young ages, these two players have notably risen through the CWI development ranks in the last 18 months since featuring for the victorious West Indies Emerging team in the 2019 CG Insurance Super50 Cup.

Four of the Emerging Players will be experiencing the CPL for the first time: Joshua James, Kirk McKenzie, Kadeem Alleyne and Leonardo Julien. McKenzie and James were members of the West Indies Under-19 side that featured in the last ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, held in South Africa in 2020, who now have a chance to develop their white ball skills with the Jamaica Tallawahs.

CWI’s Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams congratulated the selected players saying: “CWI is extremely happy for the 12 Emerging Players who will participate in this year’s CPL tournament. The Emerging Player programme is now a focal point of our elite player pathway and the CPL plays a critical role in exposing these young players to elite players and high level competition. We have no doubt that the experience gained by these young players will be a significant factor in establishing the next generation of international players within this format of the game.”

Reflecting on the third year of the CWI and CPL collaboration, CWI’s High-Performance Manager Graeme West said: “The Emerging Player Programme underlines the growth and strength of the CWI and CPL partnership. In a year where running high-performance activities for our talented young players has been challenging, CPL will provide the 12 emerging players a great learning and development opportunity.”

He continued: “With seven players retained from the 2020 CPL, this draft represents a reward for the performances and potential that the franchises saw from the Emerging Players in Trinidad last year. I’m delighted that three players from last year’s West Indies Under-19 squad have been drafted for the first time with McKenzie, James and Julian joining team-mates Nedd, Young and Seales who will look to build on their performances in 2020. The drafting of Kadeem Alleyne is really significant as it demonstrates to all young cricketers in the Caribbean that outstanding performances in local tournaments can be recognized and rewarded.”

The full list of drafted, retained and signed Emerging Players for their respective CPL teams is as follows (Home Territory Cricket Board in brackets):

Joshua Bishop (Barbados) - Retained by Barbados Tridents

Nyeem Young (Barbados) - Retained by Barbados Tridents

Ashmead Nedd (Guyana) - Retained by Guyana Warriors

Kevin Sinclair (Guyana) - Retained by Guyana Warriors

Joshua James* (Trinidad & Tobago) - Drafted by Jamaica Tallawahs

Kirk McKenzie* (Jamaica) - Drafted by Jamaica Tallawahs

Dominic Drakes (Barbados) - Retained by St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

Joshua Da Silva (Trinidad & Tobago) - Retained by St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

Kadeem Alleyne* (Barbados) - Drafted by St Lucia Zouks

Jeavor Royal (Jamaica) - Drafted by St Lucia Zouks

Leonardo Julien* (Trinidad & Tobago) - Signed by Trinbago Knight Riders

Jayden Seales (Trinidad & Tobago) - Retained by Trinbago Knight Riders

The Board Of Cricket Control for Indian Cricket has made sure that the dates of the remaining IPL matches in September and the CPL do not collide with each other. They have requested the CPL to slightly change the dates so that the IPL can be fitted inside within the limited time available for the Indian side.

The announcement resumption of IPL 2021 in UAE has already excited the cricket fans and now, the CPL dates are likely to be shifted few days after as agreed by CPL COOO Pete Russell. India is currently in England for the World Test Championship final and the five-match test series against England and they are expected to return by September month.

The Caribbean Cricket Authorities have been in talks with the BCCI Secretary on the scheduling of both the tournaments and they will also have to make sure that rescheduling of the CPL tournament doesn’t overlap with the West Indies Test assignment against Pakistan. There has been no confirmation of dates yet but the expected date for the resumption of IPL is September 18 or 19 as of now.

“CWI is doing our best to help facilitate a smooth transition from CPL to IPL, without a conflicting overlap,” Ricky Skerritt, the president of CWI, told Cricbuzz

The Caribbean premier league was originally scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 19. But with the BCCI request, the CPL might start two days early from August 25 to September 25 and this will allow four days of gap between IPL and CPL for the players to travel and get adequate rest before the tournament begins.

However, the West Indies Test tour of Pakistan is set to end by August 24, which makes it tough for the players in the test side to be available from the first game. This could possibly shift the date to August 26 with one day gap in between the tour.

The IPL 2021 has still 31 games remaining for this season and overseas the player availability is going to be a big question mark with the international schedule.

Following discussions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Cricket West Indies (CWI), the dates of this year’s tournament have been amended.

The Hero CPL will now start on 26 August and finish on 15 September.

This year’s tournament will be played in St Kitts & Nevis with all 33 matches taking place at Warner Park.

The fixtures for the 2021 tournament are as follows:

BARBADOS FRANCHISE REBRANDS AS THE ROYALS

The Barbados Caribbean Premier League franchise will change its name following a deal that sees the Royals Sports Group (EM Sporting Holdings Ltd), the owners of the Rajasthan Royals IPL franchise acquire a majority stake in the team. The two-time CPL champions will be rebranded as the Barbados Royals, a partner franchise of the Rajasthan Royals, as the Royals Sports Group seeks to expand its global presence.

The Barbados Royals were Hero CPL champions in 2014 and 2019 and are currently led by West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder. The team will get their 2021 campaign underway against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on 26 August at Warner Park, Basseterre.

Manish Patel, principal of the Barbados franchise, added, “We are extremely excited about the partnership with Manoj and the Rajasthan Royals family, which will further advance cricket in Barbados and the region.”

Royals Sports Group Chairperson, and the Lead Owner of Rajasthan Royals, Manoj Badale, commented: "We are delighted to have signed this deal with Manish Patel, to acquire a majority stake in the Barbados CPL franchise. We are extremely grateful to the Barbados government for their continued support, and we look forward to making a positive impact on both cricket and tourism for the country. We have ambitious plans for the Royals brand globally, and this is an important strategic step.”

The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Saint Lucia franchise are to change their name from the Zouks to the Kings. The team is owned by K.P.H. Dream Cricket Private Limited who also run the Punjab Kings franchise at the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Saint Lucia Kings will share branding and other assets with their colleagues at the IPL as the ownership team moves to further cement ties between the two brands. This synergy will help build on the successes the team has had since the new owners arrived after they finished as runners-up at last year’s Hero CPL tournament.

The Kings will play their first match of this season against the Jamaica Tallawahs on Friday 27 August. The Kings side will be coached by Andy Flower and will have the likes of Faf du Plessis, Andre Fletcher, Rakheem Cornwall and Wahab Riaz in their ranks.

Commenting on the new brand identity Darren Sammy, Assistant Coach and Mentor, Saint Lucia Kings, said: “I love the logo and I love the new name. It’s a pleasure to be associated with the Kings Franchise and I truly hope that the name can inspire our players to play like the true Kings that we are!”

Interesting that there’s no Indian player in the league but the platinum sponsor of the event is Hero, even though hardly anyone will watch this league in India.

Hero is expanding its footprint in South America, South/SE Asia, Africa. This is good branding opportunity for them at a fraction of IPL cost.

It makes total sense for IPL franchisees to takeover some franchisees in CPL also. It does not compete with IPL and the owners can build common brands across the globe and persuade certain players to play for them in CPL too. This will help CPL become the second best league in cricket. They can also get CPL matches to be held early morning for the Indian audiences.

They can also buy out some franchisees in BB.

It’s how you create cricket multinationals.

The majority of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cohort have arrived in St Kitts & Nevis ahead of the tournament which gets underway on 26 August 2021.

255 travelers have arrived and entered the tournament bubble and following a rigorous testing process there have been two cases of COVID-19 detected. A comprehensive contact tracing process has taken place along with additional testing and no further cases have been identified.

The two individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 are isolating as per the comprehensive protocols that have been put together by the tournament organising committee, Hero CPL’s medical advisors and the health authorities in St Kitts & Nevis.

Michael Hall, Hero CPL’s Tournament Operations Director, said: “The two positive cases were identified quickly following on arrival testing and were flagged with Hero CPL while in room quarantine was still taking place for those individuals. The tournament bubble remains intact and there has been no exposure to the wider public in the Federation. We are looking forward to getting the cricket underway on the 26 August.”

Trinbago Knight Riders opt to bowl

Guyana Amazon Warriors 142/7 (Hetmyer 54, O Smith 24; Shepherd 3/14, Odean Smith 2/10) beat Trinbago Knight Riders 133/9 (Ramdin 28, Siefert 24; Narine 2/17, Hosein 2/17) by 9 runs.

Guyana Amazon Warriors kicked off the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a 9 run win over defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders.

The Knight Riders won the toss and put the Amazon Warriors into bat and despite Shimron Hetmyer’s 50 they were able to restrict their opponents to 142/7.

However, the Amazon Warriors were to produce an even better bowling performance taking wickets at regular intervals to get their campaign off to a winning start.

The Amazon Warriors began their innings well with Chandrapaul Hemraj striking two sixes but he was caught at short third man once Sunil Narine entered the attack.

The Amazon Warriors then sprung a surprise with the hard hitting Odean Smith entering at number three to maximise the PowerPlay overs. Smith justified his promotion with 24 runs from 15 balls but once he fell the Amazon Warriors innings lost impetus leaving them struggling at the halfway stage on 57/3.

When Isuru Udana removed Shoaib Malik for a laboured 2 runs from 12 balls and Akeal Hosein got rid of Mohammed Hafeez shortly afterwards it looked as if Guyana had given themselves too much to do.

Captain Nicholas Pooran walked in at a surprising number seven with five overs remaining and tried to up the ante with Shimron Hetmyer but Pooran then fell to a stunning Darren Bravo in-out-in catch on the boundary.

Vice-captain Hetmyer had anchored the innings throughout the flurry of wickets and he cashed in at the death with some lusty blows to score the first 2021 Hero CPL 50 and ensure Guyana ended on a tricky total to chase.

Despite losing the wickets of Lendl Simmons and Colin Munro in the PowerPlay the Knight Riders were ahead of the game at the end of the 6 overs.

The turning point came with the introduction of Imran Tahir as he removed both Sunil Narine and Bravo in quick succession and the Amazon Warriors then continued to take wickets at regular intervals.

Smith put the game in the balance when he forced Tim Seifert into a false shot to leave the Knight Riders on 78/5 after 12 overs and it was to go from bad to worse for the Knight Riders when Romario Shepherd got Kieron Pollard to nick behind to Pooran for 2 runs.

Late hitting from Dinesh Ramdin kept the Knight Riders in the game but when he fell to a smart catch from Malik all hope was lost.

106 runs in last 8 overs by St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Brutal Hitting by Rutherford, Bravo and Allen.
At one stage they one 69 in first 12 overs.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 175/5 (Rutherford 53, Bravo 47*; Cottrell 2/39, Drakes 2/13) beat Barbados Royals 154/7 (Hope 44, Khan 28; Thomas 3/21, Amir 1/20) by 21 runs.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots got their 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign off to a winning start with a comprehensive 21 run win over the Barbados Royals.

Barbados Royals won the toss and put the Patriots in to bat but despite a flurry of early wickets, a fantastic 115 run partnership between DJ Bravo and Sherfane Rutherford ensured the Patriots set the highest total of the tournament so far with 175/5.

In reply the Patriots were never under threat as they produced an excellent bowling display to keep the shackles on the Royals throughout.

The Royals took full advantage of their decision to field first by removing both openers, Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas, in the first three overs before Oshane Thomas bowled Chris Gayle to leave the Patriots teetering at 38/3 at the end of the PowerPlay.

Bowling with real zip, Oshane Thomas was to strike once more removing Asif Ali in the eighth over as his hostile spell resulted in exemplary figures of 3/22 from his four overs.

Patriots captain Bravo entered at the fall of the fourth wicket and along with Rutherford they consolidated the innings before exploding into life in the final seven overs.

Their 115 run partnership in 70 balls ensured the Patriots laid a platform for Fabian Allen to add late fireworks at the death to power the Patriots to a very imposing 175/5

Much like the Royals, the Patriots made early inroads with their bowling dismissing both openers inside the first three overs. Although they needed a calamitous run-out to get them on their way when Johnson Charles found himself at the same end as Glenn Phillips.

Through the middle phase overs the Patriots put a stranglehold on the game forcing the run-rate up and putting pressure on the Royals batsmen to play high-risk shots.

Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers fell without making a significant indent on the scorecard and although Shai Hope anchored the innings with a well-constructed 44 his dismissal with six overs to go left too much to do for the remaining batsmen.

Azam Khan showed a few signs of his potential with some late blows, but the Patriots closed out the Royals innings with minimum fuss

Saint Lucia Kings have won the toss and have opted to field

Saint Lucia Kings (Playing XI): Rahkeem Cornwall, Andre Fletcher(w), Faf du Plessis(c), Roston Chase, Mark Deyal, Tim David, Keemo Paul, Wahab Riaz, Usman Qadir, Obed McCoy, Kesrick Williams

Jamaica Tallawahs (Playing XI): Kennar Lewis, Chadwick Walton(w), Haider Ali, Rovman Powell(c), Shamarh Brooks, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Chris Green, Migael Pretorius, Veerasammy Permaul, Imran Khan

Records tumbled at Warner Park as the Jamaica Tallawahs destroyed the Saint Lucia Kings by 120 runs, the biggest win in Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) history.

The Tallawahs had contributions throughout their side, but it was Andre Russell who was the most brutal, scoring fifty from just 14 balls, another Hero CPL record.

The Kings were given a mammoth target of 256 runs to win the game and they never really found partnerships that would see them get close to the Tallawahs efforts.

The Tallawahs were put into bat by the Kings and were given a lightning start thanks to Kennar Lewis who smashed 48 runs from just 22 balls in an innings that include five massive sixes that soared out of Warner Park.

Lewis was well supported by Chadwick Walton who was measured while his opening partner was scoring so freely but he opened his shoulders soon after Lewis was dismissed by Roston Chase.

The Tallawahs lost Walton for 47 but that did not slow them down with fast runs coming from Haider Ali and Rovman Powell.

The finishing touches to a fantastic Jamaica batting performance come from Russell who scored at a strike rate of 357.14. The power with which Russell struck the ball was nothing short of remarkable with the Kings bowlers unable to find any answer to his brutal hitting.

When the Kings innings got underway there were some lusty blows from Rahkeem Cornwall but then wickets began to fall regularly.

The Kings lost Cornwall and Faf du Plessis in the first over and by the end of the PowerPlay they were 66/6 and all chances of an improbable win were gone.

It was Hero CPL debutant Migael Pretorius who was the star with the ball for the Tallawahs, returning figures of 4/32.

The only standout batsman for the Kings was the in form Tim David who made 56 from 28. He was sadly lacking for support as the Saint Lucia team stumbled to 135 all out.

Speedometer seems to have some issues as the speed is possibly adjusted downwards. Almost every pacer is just getting 120s kph on the meter which seems to be around 10kph down than what it should be.

Fastest delivery in the tournament so far is being showed as 138 kph. Surely some issues with the speedometer.

POLLARD LEADS TKR TO VICTORY OVER ROYALS

Trinbago Knight Riders 125/4 (Pollard 58*, Ramdin 29*; Udana 5/21, Rampaul 2/13) beat Barbados Royals 122 (Khan 30, Phillips 24; Amir 3/21, Thomas 1/14) by six wickets.

Defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders got their 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign up and running with a six-wicket victory over the Barbados Royals.

Barbados Royals won the toss and opted to bat first but the decision didn’t go their way as an excellent Trinbago bowling display, led by Isuru Udana’s 5/21, restricted them to 122 all out.

In reply Trinbago initially made hard work of the chase before the experienced duo of Kieron Pollard and Denesh Ramdin saw them home with ease.

The Royals had got off to a steady start reaching 37 runs at the end of the PowerPlay for the sole loss of Johnson Charles.

However they could not build on the foundation as Udana’s double strike removed Jason Holder and Glenn Phillips in quick succession.

A counter-attacking 30 runs from Azam Khan briefly threatened to help Barbados set an imposing target but Udana’s re-entry into the attack led to the dismissal of both Khan and Thisara Perera to complete the first five wicket haul of the 2021 Hero CPL.

The remaining Royals wickets fell like dominoes to leave them on 122 all out.

Trinbago stuttered in their chase of the target losing three wickets in the PowerPlay as Mohammed Amir started his spell with laser like accuracy and Oshane Thomas followed that up by getting Tim Seifert to top-edge a rising delivery to deep square leg.

At 38/4 the Knight Riders were in a perilous situation, but captain Pollard took on the responsibility to take the drama out of the chase with a brilliantly constructed 58 runs from 30 balls.

Along with the experienced Denesh Ramdin the pair put on an 87-run partnership from 57 balls to see Trinbago home comfortably.

St Kitts are 53/0 off 48 balls chasing 147 for victory, Evin Lewis looking in ominous form batting on 38 currently.

The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots made in two wins out of two at the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) against Guyana Amazon Warriors thanks to wickets from Dominic Drakes and runs from Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas.

The Warriors innings stuttered at the beginning before some later order runs took them to a respectable total.

In their first match against the Trinbago Knight Riders the Warriors defended a similar total. In this match a stunning opening stand of 113 between Lewis and Thomas took the Patriots to a eight wicket win.

The Warriors won the toss and elected to bat, but they struggled to get their innings underway in the face of some tidy bowling from the Patriots. Drakes was the star but there were excellent spells inside the PowerPlay from Sheldon Cottrell and Paul van Meekeren.

It was Cottrell who got the first breakthrough when he had Brandon King caught by Sherfane Rutherford off a leading edge. The Warriors once again pushed Odean Smith up the order as a pinch hitter but he didn’t have the same success as in game against the Knight Riders, falling for a seven ball duck.

Wickets continued to fall throughout the Warriors innings, and they found themselves 75/5 in the 12th over with Drakes finishing with 3/26 and Fawad Ahmed claiming 2/33. Some lusty blows from Nicholas Pooran and a measured innings from Mohammad Hafeez got them to 146/8.

Thomas and Lewis were in fine form, and they made the Guyana total look under par as they batted with controlled aggression to put the Patriots in complete control of the chase.

There were few alarms for the Patriots as Evin Lewis top scored with 62 from 39 balls, an innings that guided his team to a eight wicket victory with eight balls to spare.

Barbados Royals got their first win of the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a comfortable 15 run victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Royals won the toss and opted to bat first and Glenn Phillips ensured that they put a competitive total on the board with an unbeaten 56 from 46 balls.

In reply the Tallawahs chase was over before it really began as they lost four wickets in the PowerPlay and as a result never kept pace with the run rate.

The Royals opted to make a change to their opening pair – with Shai Hope partnering Johnson Charles and it appeared to work with them putting on 32 run partnership from 20 balls.

However, once Hope was dismissed it sparked a flurry of wickets that left Barbados teetering at 48/3 at the end of PowerPlay. It should have been even worse but Haider Ali dropped Glen Phillips when he was on 2 runs.

Phillips punished that drop in the back end of the Barbados innings hitting a half century with 56 runs from 46 balls and he was ably assisted by Raymon Reifer in a brisk partnership of 79 runs.

161 always looked like 15 runs too many and the Tallawahs got their chase off to the worst possible start losing four wickets inside the PowerPlay.

Some good bowling and electric fielding by Hayden Walsh Jr had the Tallawahs on the back foot throughout.

Carlos Braithwaite and Shamarh Brooks threatened to bring them back into the game with a 66-run partnership but a double strike from Reifer got rid of Braithwaite and Andre Russell in the same over.

Despite some late blows from Miguel Pretorius that made the last few overs interesting there was always too much for the Tallawahs to do once Russell had departed.

Saint Lucia Kings (Playing XI): Rahkeem Cornwall, Andre Fletcher(w), Faf du Plessis(c), Roston Chase, Mark Deyal, Tim David, Keemo Paul, Wahab Riaz, Alzarri Joseph, Usman Qadir, Jeavor Royal

Trinbago Knight Riders have won the toss and have opted to field

St Lucia finish 157/5 thanks to a brisk 43 from Tim David. Ravi Rampaul took 3/29 from his quota of 4 overs.

Wahab kept his nerves otherwise it was ordinary tactics and strategy from Saint Lucia Kings in today’s match. Ball was spinning and rather than using their overseas leggy Usman Qadir they kept on using all round spinners without giving even a single over to Qadir to see what he can extract.

Further their most experienced pacer Wahab only bowled 3 overs and was pick of the seamers. Gave 2nd last over to Paul which allowed new batsman Seifert to get the momentum rather than going for Wahab to ball that crucial 2nd last over.

Something to think about for Flower but, especially for Faf was on the field as the captain.

The Saint Lucia Kings claimed their first victory of the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League with a thrilling win over the Trinbago Knight Riders by five runs.

Tim David was once again the star for the Kings with 43 from 32 balls that saw his side post 157/5 from their 20 overs.

The Knight Riders looked to take the game deep thanks to a brilliant 40 from 16 balls from Tim Seifert but the Kings claimed a last ball win.

The Kings started brightly after being put into bat with Andre Fletcher and Rahkeem Cornwall putting on 51 for the first wicket. It was Cornwall who went first, when he lobbed a ball from Ravi Rampaul to extra cover.

A burst of three wickets for the addition of just four runs pegged back the Kings and they looked to rebuild. A partnership of 68 between Roston Chase and Tim David brought the Kings back into the match with Chase playing the anchor role to David’s more aggressive approach.

An enterprising stand between Chase and Keemo Paul took the Kings to 157/5 with Chase finishing on 30 not out.

The Kings bowlers kept things tight at the start with the Knight Riders scoring at less than a run a ball inside the PowerPlay with Jeavor Royal particularly impressive with his left arm spin.

In the face of some excellent bowling Lendl Simmons and Colin Munro struggled to kick on with Simmons falling to Paul for 25 from 30 balls. At the fall of Simmons wicket, the Knight Riders needed 88 from 43 balls.

When Kieron Pollard fell for 9 from 10 balls it was down to the New Zealand pair of Munro and Tim Seifert to get their side home. Seifert’s brilliant hitting took his team tantalisingly close to a victory, but Wahab Riaz successfully defended 14 runs from the final over.

Looks like Hafeez will be truly ready for the WC in UAE after seeing these poor, slow CPL pitches with a slow outfield.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots player Mikyle Louis has been forced to leave the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) following a breach of the tournament operating protocols, and will take no further part in this year’s tournament.

The Hero CPL protocols for 2021 state, inter alia, the following:

“The tournament bubble will be maintained for the entire duration of the tournament and no one from outside the bubble will be allowed in at any of the bubble locations. Conversely, no one from inside the bubble will be allowed out of the main bubble areas. Persons who break these rules will be expelled from the tournament – no exceptions.”

Speaking on the incident, Hero CPL’s Tournament Operations Director, Michael Hall said: “Following the receipt of some tragic news about a close friend, the player took the unfortunate and ill-advised decision to leave the hotel bubble without permission. While the league is sympathetic about the circumstances which led to the player’s decision, it cannot allow the integrity of its Covid-secure bubble to be compromised.”

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots maintained their unbeaten start to the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a dramatic six wicket victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The Amazon Warriors won the toss and opted to bat first and posted a very challenging 166/3 buttressed by a sparkling partnership between Mohammed Hafeez and Shimron Hetmyer.

In reply the Patriots fired once more with the bat, to chase down the target, led by Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 59 from 34 balls.

The Amazon Warriors had paced their innings superbly and they had Hafeez to thank, his 70 runs from 59 balls anchored the innings allowing Hetmyer to play his natural game.

The pair put on a 101-run partnership from 67 deliveries, but both fell in successive balls in the 18th over. Nicholas Pooran and Brandon King then scrambled some late runs to ensure the Amazon Warriors posted their highest score of the tournament so far.

A target of 167 looked a hard task, but the Patriots openers Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas laid the foundation for the chase with an opening stand of 69.

The introduction of Imran Tahir proved crucial for the Amazon Warriors as he removed both openers to swing the game back in their favour.

However, the heroes from the Patriots opening game, Rutherford and Dwayne Bravo, forged another match winning partnership to bring the Patriots to the verge of victory.

Bravo was dismissed with 18 runs still needed but Rutherford made light work of the equation with his second 50 of the tournament to seal a memorable win.

Trinbago Knight Riders moved up to second in the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table with a 27 run victory over the Saint Lucia Kings.

The Kings won the toss and opted to field first and for the first half of the TKR innings they had full control of the game. However, a late salvo from Kieron Pollard and Tim Seifert helped the Knight Riders to post a challenging total.

In reply Andre Fletcher played a fine lone hand for the Kings but the team never got going as a disciplined Trinbago bowling attack kept a firm stranglehold on proceedings throughout.

The Knight Riders opened their innings with the familiar pair of Lendl Simmons and Sunil Narine and they put on a partnership of 23 from 18 balls before Wahab Riaz trapped the former plumb in front.

It took the introduction of Tim Seifert for the Knight Riders innings to gain impetus after Tion Webster, Narine and Colin Munro had all fallen in consecutive overs.

Along with Kieron Pollard the pair put on 78 runs from 44 balls to help post a competitive total.

Just like the TKR innings, the Kings struggled to find any momentum in the first half of their reply amidst some exceptional and parsimonious bowling from Sunil Narine and Akeal Hosein that left them needing an unlikely 82 runs from 36 balls.

Despite Andre Fletcher’s unbeaten 81 from 55 balls, three wickets by the tournament’s top wicket taker Ravi Rampaul ensured no one was able to stick with him to chase down the TKR total.

Jamaica Tallawahs earned their second victory of the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a six wicket victory over the Barbados Royals.

The Royals won the toss and opted to bat, Azam Khan’s fluent 50 off just 30 balls taking them to 151/8.

However, the Jamaica Tallawahs were able to chase the target in 17.4 overs through the sublime batting of Kennar Lewis, his innings of 89 the highest score of the tournament so far, supported by the graceful play of Sharmarh Brooks, who hit 47 not out off 26 balls.

Barbados Royals had found themselves in early trouble, losing key batsmen Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers in successive balls in the Powerplay to Fidel Edwards, who was making his first appearance in this year’s Hero CPL.

A recovery mission was led by Azam and Phillips; the pair putting on a partnership of 71 runs off 51 balls to build a foundation for the innings. Joshua Bishop then struck 18 off 8 balls at the back end of the innings to take his side to a respectable total.

Migael Pretorius was the standout bowler for the Tallawahs, taking four wickets, while Rovman Powell led by example with three excellent catches in the field.

Tallawahs response was led by Lewis, who powered the innings despite his team losing early wickets to the spin of Joshua Bishop, including captain Powell, who was dismissed by a superb piece of fielding as Jason Holder held on to his shot with one hand at long off.

Barbados Royals will count themselves unlucky as star bowler Mohammad Amir had to leave the field injured during the second innings. The win takes the Jamaica Tallawahs up to second in the Hero CPL standings.

Kieron Pollard is a character, there's no denying that. Quite often on the field, the West Indies all-rounder produces certain moments on the field that leave fans absolutely baffled. In the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL), a match between Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Kings at Warner Park in St Kitts produced one such moment.

Certain umpiring decisions have been questionable in the CPL 2021. Bemused with an umpiring decision during the match on Tuesday, Pollard expressed his disappointment as a call went against the Knight Riders.

It was the 19th over the innings, with Pollard at the non-striker's end. With the team looking to accelerate the run-rate, a wideish delivery was bowled by Wahab Riaz. While the batsman, Tim Seifert, struggled to reach the ball, the line umpire didn't signal wide. Both Seifert and Pollard were unhappy with the call. While the former didn't have another choice but to accept it, the latter decided to protest.

Pollard had an argument with the umpire over the decision and after inconclusive talks, he decided to stand far away from the non-striker's end. The veteran all-rounder took a walk and stood near the 30-yard mark as a sign of protest.

This isn't even the first time Pollard had done such an act on the field. The hard-hitter is produced a number of dramatic incidents on the field over the years and this probably would not be the end either.

Match tied (Guyana Amazon Warriors won the Super Over)

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Romario Shepherd

Guyana Amazon Warriors claimed a stunning Super Over victory over the Trinbago Knight Riders at the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Sunil Narine bowled the Super Over for the Knight Riders and conceded just six runs. It was left to Romario Shepherd to bowl the Amazon Warriors' Super Over and he conceded just four runs to win the game for his team.

Both teams finished on exactly 138/9 from their 20 overs with neither side consistently dominating with the bat. Knight Riders were favouries with five overs to go but some big hits from Nicholas Pooran and Shepherd tied up the game.

The Amazon Warriors got off to the perfect start with Lendl Simmons bowled by Chandrapaul Hemraj off the second ball of the innings. With two further TKR wickets inside the PowerPlay they would have been happier of the two teams after six overs, but it could have been even better. Two chances went down which prevented them from having even more success.

A partnership of 39 between Sunil Narine and Tion Webster looked promising before Narine was caught at mid-on attempting to hit over the top of the in field. When Webster was gone seven runs later it was left to Colin Munro and Tim Seifert to rebuild.

Munro top scored with 32 from 28 balls before he was dismissed by Imran Tahir when he caught a leading edge that was caught in the covers.

A steady flow of TKR wickets prevented them from really getting going but a sprightly 21 from nine balls from Isuru Udana took them to 138/9.

The Amazon Warriors chase also started with early wickets with Ravi Rampaul dismissing Hemraj and Odean Smith from successive balls to leave them 7/2 in the second over.

Shimron Hetmyer and Hafeez looked to rebuild but they were tied down by the TKR spinners. Hafeez was dismissed by Khary Pierre for 16 from 30 balls to leave the Amazon Warriors needing 100 runs from nine overs.

Pooran was dismissed by a stunning one handed grab by Akeal Hosein before Shepherd took the game deep with the bat. Amazon Warriors squeezed out the tie off the last ball before they claimed a famous win in the Super Over.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots carried on their unbeaten start in the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a six wicket victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Patriots won the toss and elected to field first and a disciplined bowling performance restricted the Tallawahs to 166/8, a total that appeared under par for the track.

In reply the Patriots proved that assessment to be accurate as they made it four wins from four with another dominant batting display led by the tournament’s top scorer Sherfane Rutherford.

The Tallawahs got their innings off to a lightning start with the hard-hitting duo of Chadwick Walton and Kennar Lewis putting on a blistering partnership of 41 runs inside 3.3 overs.

However, once Paul Van Meekeren dismissed Kennar Lewis that led to a shift in the innings with the Patriots tightening the screws courtesy of some economical bowling by captain DJ Bravo.

Things were to go from bad to worse for the Tallawahs when Walton had to retire hurt, tweaking his hamstring after running a quick single.

It took an enterprising counter-attack by Rovman Powell and Carlos Brathwaite in the back end of the innings to revitalise the Tallawahs and this was further boosted by some late blows by the lower order to ensure they posted a respectable total.

The Patriots made a similar start in their innings, with Evin Lewis bringing the early fireworks, but the wickets of Devon Thomas and Asif Ali in quick succession followed by Evin Lewis left the game in the balance.

If things were finely poised Sherfane Rutherford and Fabian Allen made light work of the equation, a fantastic display of power hitting saw the pair smash 55 runs from 20 balls to seal the win at a canter.
