New penalties for slow over rates have been introduced for the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) ahead of the 2023 season.

As is customary in the T20 format, each team will have 85 mins to bowl their overs, but this will be monitored more closely at this year’s tournament. The fielding side is expected to have completed the 17th over of the innings after 72’15, the 18th by 76’30 and the 19th by 80’45. Over rates will be monitored by the third umpire and communicated to the captains via on-field umpires at the end of every over, as well as to the crowd and TV audience, with graphics showing how far they are behind (or ahead of) the over rate. Dispensations will be given for injuries, DRS and time-wasting by batting side where appropriate.

To ensure that games are finished in good time, penalties for slow over rates will kick in from the 18th over, and will be as follows:

If behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, one additional player must enter the fielding circle (for a total of 5)

If still behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, two additional fielders must enter the fielding circle (for a total of 6)

If still behind the rate at the start of the 20th over, teams will lose a player from the field (selected by the captain) and have six inside the fielding circle.

There will also be an onus on batting teams to keep the game moving. After a first and final warning from the umpires, the batting team will be given a 5 penalty for each instance of time wasting.

Michael Hall, CPL’s Tournament Operations Director, said: “We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend. It is the duty of those involved in cricket to ensure that the game keeps moving and we have sensitised both the franchises and our match officials to this duty ahead of the tournament. Our hope is that these in game penalties are not needed, but we believe they are proportionate and necessary.”

The Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League is set to get underway on 16 August in Saint Lucia. The tournament will then visit St Kitts & Nevis, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. The final will take place on 24 September at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Quotes from teams

Trevor Penney, Barbados Royals Head Coach: “Having had a great season last year, where we topped the league stage and played some extraordinary cricket, it was disappointing to not win the CPL trophy. We went back to the drawing board and made some changes to the team, and we feel we are a strong unit again which can challenge for the title. We have Rovman as a new leader, who in himself, is a great character and provides a real x-factor to the team which we have seen in the T20I series against India as well. We are also pleased to have retained our core group of West Indian players who are so integral to this team and bring immense quality and entertainment to the table.

"The most exciting aspect for us is also going back to Barbados after 3 seasons, to play in front of our fans, seeing them in person and feeling the energy they provide to the players. I think the Kensington Oval is going to love seeing this team in action and we are going to love playing there."

Lance Klusener, Guyana Amazon Warriors Head Coach: "The Guyana Amazon Warriors squad are very much looking forward to getting underway for the 2023 season. We have retained the core of the side that took us to the playoffs last season and have brought in overseas players that are exciting, talented and experienced. With the finals set to take place in Guyana once again we are working on being in contention to claim our first CPL title and we are looking forward to the amazing crowd in Providence being 100% behind us."

Brandon King, Jamaica Tallawahs Captain: "The Jamaica Tallawahs are excited for the 2023 season to begin, I firmly believe that our success in the upcoming tournament lies not just in our individual skills, but in our ability to unite as a team, play with passion, and embrace every challenge that comes our way. I’m excited for the new season and can’t wait to get on the field to defend our title."

Malolan Rangarajan, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots Head Coach: “The squad has a great mix of experienced and exceptionally talented players. A lot of work has been done behind the scenes to put the pieces together and I’m thankful to all involved. As a coaching group we will provide the team with a stable & high performance environment. Our aim is simple but powerful: to play with passion, showcase our skills, and make our fans proud. The energy of St. Kitts and Nevis will be our driving force. The Caribbean Premier League is a stage where dreams take flight & I look forward to the season with great enthusiasm.”

Daren Sammy, Saint Lucia Kings Head Coach: “The Saint Lucia Kings are delighted to be getting their 2023 campaign under way at our home ground. We are sure that the Lucian public will come out in big numbers to support us as we push to make the play offs and then go on and claim our first CPL title. We have a very strong team full of exciting young talent and experienced local and overseas players and we are well placed heading in to the tournament.”

Phil Simmons, Trinbago Knight Riders Head Coach: “I’m excited for the CPL. We had a challenging season last year, and us Trinbagonians - we like to win, always. I feel we have put together a very balanced squad with the right mix of experience and youth for this year. Personally, it’s been a long time (since I last visited Trinidad), so very excited and It’s time to get TKR back to the top. It’s something that we all want, it’s something that we are all looking forward to as a group.”

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots have signed Indian keeper, Ambati Raydu. This should make the series a bit more spicy. Hope to see more Indians join in the comming years

A rain delay in the opening CPL game, the current game state:

JT 187 (20)
SLK 13/0 (1.1)

Saint Lucia Kings need 175 runs from 113 balls.

Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir both playing for JT.

Imad hit 19 (14). Amir bowled the opening over of the chase, conceding 10.

Imad outstanding with 3/27, Amir and Irshad, no wickets so far

-Amir nearly gifted the match to them lol, poor bowling

-Imad Wasim doing his thing, get him back to the team

-Solid death bowling from Irshad

Jamaica Tallawahs 187 all out (King 81, McKenzie 20; Chase 3/39, Joseph 2/21) beat Saint Lucia Kings 176/8 (Chase 53, Primus 37; Wasim 3/27, Green 2/28) by 11 runs.

Defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs defeated Saint Lucia Kings by 11 runs in the opening game of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Saint Lucia Kings won the toss and opted to put Jamaica Tallawahs in to bat, captain Brandon King leading the way with a dazzling innings of 81 from 53 balls to take the Tallawahs to 187 all out.

In their chase, Saint Lucia Kings struggled to build momentum as the experienced spin bowling duo of Chris Green and Imad Wasim caused them early problems. Roston Chase gave the home side hope with a superb innings of 53, however, it was in vain as the Saint Lucia Kings fell short of the target.

Jamaica Tallawahs had got off to a fluent start in the first five overs, before losing two quick wickets to the spin of Roston Chase. With Amir Jangoo also departing in the following over, the Tallawahs looked in trouble, but Brandon King continued to make runs, hitting twelve boundaries in total, as the Tallawahs scored a substantial 187. Alzarri Joseph and Roston Chase were the pick of the bowlers for Saint Lucia Kings, the West Indian internationals taking a combined five wickets.

Saint Lucia King’s response was stifled with the loss of captain Faf du Plessis in the third over, yet Johnson Charles and Sean Williams guided them to 45-1 at end of the Powerplay. Chris Green would dismiss them both as the required run rate crept up. Roston Chase put up a valiant effort with the bat, his half century coming off just 27 balls, with support from Roshon Primus, but it was not to be enough as the Saint Lucia Kings finished on 176/8.

Saint Lucia Kings will look to rebound in tomorrow evening’s match as they face off against Barbados Royals at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.

Saint Lucia Kings 201/6 (Williams 47, Du Plessis 46; Holder 4/38, Qais 2/35) beat Barbados Royals 147 all out (Young 48, Ferreira 19; Forde 3/12, Raza 1/21) by 54 runs

Saint Lucia Kings bounced back from opening day defeat to get their tournament underway with a comprehensive 54 run victory over the Barbados Royals in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The Kings won the toss and opted to bat first and they filled their boots with a barnstorming innings that saw them post the highest total of the season thus far with a fantastic 201/6.

Healthy contributions from all members of the batting order negated a brilliant spell of bowling from Jason Holder and ensured the Royals would have to produce something very special to win.

The Royals failed to get going in their reply, losing five wickets in the PowerPlay to all but end the chase but a spirited 48 from Nyeem Young ensured the Royals added some late respectability to proceedings.

Earlier on the Kings had posted 201/6, led by a blistering show by the opening pair of Johnson Charles and Faf Du Plessis, the Kings raced to 61 but two wickets in Jason Holder’s first over brought things back. Charles and Shadrack Descarte falling in quick succession to give the Royals something to work with.

However that joy proved to be short-lived as first Sean Williams and Du Plessis, then Williams and Sikandar Raza made light work of the Royals bowling to put the Kings into a commanding position heading into the final five overs.

But that platform failed to be fully exploited as Qais Ahmad and Jason Holder pulled the momentum back by dismissing Williams and Raza respectively.

Holder was to finish the match with 4/38 adding Roston Chase to his list of scalps but the lack of consistent support elsewhere ensured the Kings were still able to post an imposing total for the Royals to chase.

202 to win was always a tall order for the Royals to chase but the reply was over before it began, following a run out for Rahkeem Cornwall, Matthew Forde was destructor in chief removing the Royals top order to leave the innings in trouble at 21/4.

Kyle Mayers briefly threaten to counter attack before Alzarri Joseph had him caught on the third man boundary for 16.

From there the Kings took the game away with wickets falling at regular intervals to dismiss the Royals for 147 to chalk up their first win of the tournament.

NO RESULT POSSIBLE AS KINGS AND AMAZON WARRIORS SHARE THE SPOILS

Rain was to prove the victor as Saint Lucia Kings and Guyana Amazon Warriors took a point apiece in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Inclement weather throughout the day suggested what play we did get would be in a shortened match and Faf Du Plessis having won the toss made the decision to bowl first to allow the Kings the chance to assess the conditions.

The match was persistently interrupted before eventually being reduced to a five over a side shoot out.

Saim Ayub and Chandrapaul Hemraj tried to accelerate but on a pitch with good bounce and carry they struggled with their timing before Hemraj fell first for 4 midway through the third over.

However, that wicket seemed to spark the Amazon Warriors innings into life and Ayub and Azam Khan took Chris Sole and Alzarri Joseph for 18 and 19 runs respectively.

There was to be further woe for the Kings after they accrued the slow over rate penalty for the final over but Jair McCallister bowled a brilliant death over on his CPL debut to ensure the Amazon Warriors were restricted to 56 from their five overs.

DLS readjusted the Saint Lucia target to 59 but the match was to see no further action as rain returned to call a permanent halt to proceedings.

The result meant both teams shared the spoils in a result that sent Saint Lucia to the top of the nascent CPL table.

KING LEADS JAMAICA TALLAWAHS TO VICTORY

Jamaica Tallawahs 157/2 (King 67, Brooks 38; Thomas 1/25, Drakes 1/28) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 156/9 (Da Silva 36, Drakes 29; Irshad 4/27, Amir 3/20) by 8 wickets.

Jamaica Tallawahs continued their unbeaten start to the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with an eight wicket win over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

The Jamaican franchise won the toss and chose to field first, with a superb four wicket haul from Salman Irshad helping them restrict the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to 156/9 after 20 overs.

The Tallawahs managed to chase down the target in 16.3 overs, captain Brandon King producing a magnificent innings of 67 to continue the defending champions great start to the season.

The Patriots had got off to a promising early start, Andre Fletcher and Evin Lewis combining to push the score to 20/0 after two overs. Yet the fourth over would change the whole complexion of the tie as Irshad took three wickets, including that of Fletcher and Ambati Rayudu, to leave the Patriots reeling at 37/4. West Indies international Joshua Da Silva steadily rebuilt the innings with his score of 36, before a late burst from Dominic Drakes saw the Patriots reach 156/9 at the end of their innings.

Jamaica Tallawah openers Brandon King and Kirk McKenzie combined to score seven boundaries and take the side to 34/0 after three overs of their chase. King would go on to bring up his half century off just 22 balls, before losing his wicket on 67 to a Dominic Drakes delivery. Shamarh Brooks would continue to accelerate the score before Amir Jangoo would take his side across the finish line with a six.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will look to rebound in tomorrow evening’s match as they face off against Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Guyana Amazon Warriors 197/7 (Hope 54, Ayub 31; Thomas 3/38, Drakes 2/43) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 132 (Lewis 48, Rayudu 32; Motie 4/29, Tahir 2/35) by 65 runs

Guyana Amazon Warriors got their first win of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a comfortable 65 run victory against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

The Patriots won the toss and opted to field first but the decision backfired as the Amazon Warriors made light of regular wickets falling to post an exceptional 197/7.

In reply the Patriots struggled to get close to the Warriors total. Evin Lewis played a quickfire captain’s knock but once he fell no one else in the Patriots order was able to have a similar effect on the game.

The Amazon Warriors innings suffered an early blow when Sheldon Cottrell removed Chandrapaul Hemraj in the first over for a duck.

Although the Patriots were to lose two further wickets in the PowerPlay, Saim Ayub falling to Dominic Drakes and Azam Khan to Oshane Thomas, they kept the run rate brisk reaching 59/3 at the end of the initial six overs.

Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer were to build on that momentum taking the score to 101/3 at the halfway stage of the innings and Hope leading the way racing to his half century from 26 balls.

However the partnership was eventually broken by Izharulhaq Naveed – the wrist spinner bowling the destructive Hope for 54. That wicket was quickly followed up by the dismissal of Hetmyer for 26, the left-hander holing out to the deep point boundary.

Those wickets briefly took the momentum out of the innings but Keemo Paul and Romario Shepherd added quick runs at the back end to help the Warriors post an imposing total of 197/7.

The Patriots were never really in the game in their reply as scoreboard pressure told.

Andre Fletcher and Joshua Da Silva fell inside the PowerPlay to leave the Patriots 37/2 at the end of six overs.

Patriots captain Evin Lewis played a fine counter attacking innings of 48 from 24 balls to bring the required run rate down to a more manageable total but that scenario did not last long.

Lewis and Sherfane Rutherford fell six balls apart to leave the Patriots 88/4 at the halfway stage.

Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals with Gudakesh Motie the star turn with the ball as he finished with career best figures in a spell that included the wicket of Ambati Rayudu.

The left arm spinner took 4/28 to leave the Amazon Warriors on the cusp of victory and the final rites were indeed read when Naveed was caught on the boundary by Hetmyer.

The Patriots will look to bounce back when they host the Barbados Royals on Saturday

Australian batter Tim David is amongst the replacement overseas players signed by the Trinbago Knight Riders for their 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League campaign. David replaces Rilee Rossouw who is no longer available for the 2023 season.
David has CPL experience having previous represented the Saint Lucia Kings at the tournament. He is however not available for the first six league games of the tournament, and will have a temporary replacement in the form of Irish international Lorcan Tucker, the wicket-keeper batter who has played more than 100 times for Ireland and has made more than 1500 runs in T20 cricket.
Also joining the Knight Riders is England international Tom Curran. He will be a temporary replacement for Noor Ahmad, who is no longer available for the 2023 season.
The Knight Riders have also confirmed that their final overseas spot will go to USA international Ali Khan who has been part of the franchise’s set up since 2017.

Saint Lucia Kings earned their second win of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a 54 run victory over Trinbago Knight Riders.

The Knight Riders won the toss and chose to field first, but Saint Lucia Kings, powered by the batting of Faf du Plessis and Sikandar Raza, scored a substantial 167/5 after 20 overs.

Trinbago Knight Riders began their chase scoring runs rapidly, but the spin bowling of Khary Pierre, Roston Chase and Sikandar Raza was ultimately their undoing as they lost frequent wickets and were bowled out for 113, falling 54 runs short of the target.

Openers Faf du Plessis and Johnson Charles would put on an 85 run partnership to provide a platform for the Saint Lucia Kings, du Plessis reaching his half century from just 33 balls before losing his wicket to an Andre Russell delivery.

Trinbago Knight Riders would then frustrate Saint Lucia Kings as their variation of bowlers kept the runs down, before Sikandar Raza led a counter-attack, scoring four boundaries before departing for 32. Dwayne Bravo and Ali Khan would bowl superbly at the end of the innings, combining to concede just 11 runs and taking three wickets across the final two overs, as the Saint Lucia Kings set a target of 168 to win.

There were early set backs for the Knight Riders, as they lost the experienced wickets of Martin Guptill, Chadwick Walton and Nicholas Pooran in the powerplay. Captain Kieron Pollard would provide a destructive cameo as he scored 34 off 15 balls and ensured they stayed ahead of the run rate, but wickets continued to fall, leaving the Knight Riders 86-6 after ten overs. Saint Lucia Kings continued to utilise spin effectively; Khary Pierre was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets for 20 runs as the Knight Riders were dismissed for 113.

Trinbago Knight Riders will look to rebound in tomorrow evening’s match as they face off against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

Barbados Royals 200/4 (Powell 67*, Cornwall 38; Drakes 2/37, Bosch 1/28) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 197/6 (Fletcher 51, Bosch 38*; Ahmad 2/16, Young 2/54) by 6 wickets

The Barbados Royals defeated the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in their 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match at Warner Park, St Kitts.

The Royals won the toss and opted to field first and despite seemingly having the Patriots innings under their control, the home side rallied with late order batting to set a mammoth total of 197/7.

In reply the Royals saw Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers lay the foundation in the PowerPlay before captain Rovman Powell saw his side home with the fastest 50 in the Republic Bank CPL this season.

His destructive innings saw the Royals complete the second highest run chase in Republic Bank CPL history.

The Patriots got their innings off to a lightning start led by Andre Fletcher’s sparkling strokeplay, the Spiceman’s 360 cricket allowing the Patriots to reach 56 at the end of the PowerPlay but they lost two wickets in the process.

Rahkeem Cornwall induced a mis-timed stroke from Evin Lewis, the opener sweeping only as far as Kyle Mayers for 8 before Joshua Da Silva was run out for 5 chasing a quick second run.

Outside of the PowerPlay the Patriots run scoring slowed significantly, Fletcher and Sherfane Rutherford only putting on 39 runs from 34 balls before Nyeem Young dismissed Rutherford caught and bowled for 28.

Fletcher followed shortly afterwards having just got to his 50, Qais Ahmad trapping him lbw. That was only the beginning of Ahmad’s work as he cleaned up Jyd Goolie to leave the Patriots teetering at 111/5.

Powerful late order hitting from Corbin Bosch (38) and Dominic Drakes (20) ensured the Patriots ended with momentum on their side, with a stiff target of 198 for the Royals to chase.

If the Royals were going to chase the total they would need a fast start and they got that and then some with Rahkeem Cornwall smashing 38 from 15 balls to give the reply the impetus it needed.

Having reached 74 at the end of the PowerPlay the Royals were well ahead of the game but Kyle Mayers fell shortly after that to open the door for the Patriots.

The Patriots couldn’t apply further wicket taking pressure but even so with the Royals poised at 150/3 with five overs to go, the match seemed set for a tight finish.

However, captain Rovman Powell saw his side home with a destructive 67 from 29 balls to guide the Royals home with nine balls to spare.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors continued their unbeaten start to the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a 34 run win over the Jamaica Tallawahs at Warner Park.

Despite a tricky start with the bat the Amazon Warriors posted an imposing total of 210/7 with fifties for Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul.

In reply the Tallawahs top order succumbed to the bowling of Romario Shepherd with five wickets falling inside the first seven overs.

A brilliant partnership between Imad Wasim and Fabian Allen saw the Tallawahs recover from 36/5 to 133/6 but the damage caused by those early wickets could not be repaired.

The Jamaica Tallawahs started brilliantly with the ball, claiming two wickets inside the first over. The first man to go was Hazratullah Zazai who made a two-ball duck on his CPL debut when he cut a ball from Chris Green to Imad Wasim at point.

When Saim Ayub edged a ball from Mohammad Amir through to the keeper the score was 7/2 and the Amazon Warriors were in danger of losing the game inside the PowerPlay.

Azam Khan hit a huge six but was dismissed for just 7 when he was brilliantly caught by Salman Irshad who claimed a diving effort on the third boundary, but from there it was all about the Warriors batting.

Shai Hope made an attractive 25 and shared a 50-run stand with Shimron Hetmyer, but the fireworks really started with Keemo Paul walked to the crease. Hetmyer and Paul put on 99-run stand from just 47 balls with both men passing fifty. Paul was dismissed for a career best 57 while Hetmyer made a blistering 60.

It was left to Romario Shepherd and Dwaine Pretorius to take the Warriors past 200 as they set a target of 211.

It was always going to be a stiff chase but when Romario Shepherd bowled a double wicket maiden it made things very hard for the Tallawahs. Shepherd would go on to finish with figures of 3/7 from his three overs.

The stand between Allen and Imad was full of attacking shots but with the required rate getting unmanageble there was too much left for them to do. When Imad was dismissed for 63 by Imran Tahir the required rate was up to 20 runs an over.

Allen fell for 47 and with him any slim hopes of a Tallawahs win departed as the Jamaican side finished on 176 all out.

Trinbago Knight Riders 180/4 (Pooran 61, Pollard 37; Bosch 3/22, Muzarabani 1/30) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 178/5 (Rutherford 62, Fletcher 32; Narine 3/24, Bravo 2/43) by six wickets.

Trinbago Knight Riders earned their first victory of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a six wicket win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

Trinbago Knight Riders won the toss and chose to field first, a bowling masterclass from Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine had caused early inroads, but a brilliant 66 run partnership between stand in captain Sherfane Rutherford and Corbin Bosch managed to take the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to 178-5.

The Knight Riders lost early wickets in their chase, but Nicholas Pooran produced a sensational innings of 61 to help guide his side to their first win of this campaign.

Patriots openers Andre Fletcher and Evin Lewis got their side off to a quick start in front of a cheering home crowd, scoring 43 runs in the first 4 overs, before Dwayne Bravo, playing in his 100th CPL game, took both of their wickets in the space of three balls. Sunil Narine would then take the wickets of Joshua da Silva and Jyd Goolie to leave the Patriots struggling. Rutherford scored a half century, and supported by Corbin Bosch, he took the Patriots to a substantial score of 178/5.

Also, for the first time in Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League history a red card was brandished as the Trinbago Knight Riders incurred three over-rate penalties, meaning, as per regulations introduced this season, they had to play the final over with just 10 players on the field. Sunil Narine was the player who was withdrawn from the field of play.

Trinbago Knight Riders lost the early wickets of Chadwick Walton and Martin Guptill in their chase, however Nicholas Pooran would play some sublime shots to help take his side to 50/2 at the end of the powerplay. Pooran continued to score boundaries after the powerplay but was eventually caught out for 61 from 32 balls off a Corbin Bosch delivery. The 14th over would prove to be pivotal as Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard would score four sixes to put his side firmly in control, and he would eventually win the game with a final six off a Dominics Drake delivery in the 17th over.

The action now shifts to Barbados as the next round of league games start at Kensington Oval on Wednesday evening.

Carlos Brathwaite will join the Barbados Royals as a temporary replacement for Donovan Ferreira who has been called up by South Africa for international duties.

English players Benny Howell and Will Smeed will be joining the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. They will be replacing Blessing Muzarabani and Ambati Rayudu who have left the tournament to deal with personal matters.

Barbados Royals vs Trinbago Knight Riders

TKR 194/5 (20) CRR: 9.7

Trinbago Knight Riders 194/5 (Guptill 100*, Pollard 46; Holder 2/39, vd Merwe 1/32) beat Barbados Royals 61 all out (Holder 14, Powell 10, Ahmad 10; Salamkheil 4/14, Russell 3/13) by 133 runs

A dominant display with both bat and ball saw Trinbago Knight Riders record a 133 run win over Barbados Royals in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Barbados Royals won the toss and chose to field first, initially restricting the Trinbago Knight Riders before a fantastic 108 run partnership between Martin Guptill and Kieron Pollard fired the Knight Riders to a total of 194/5.

Barbados Royals chase was derailed in the powerplay, as they lost four wickets, and they were unable to recover. Eventually they would finish on 61 all out, as Trinbago Knight Riders cruised to a 133 run win.

Trinbago Knight Riders had a cautious start to their innings, with Martin Guptill at one point 20 runs from 20 balls, having also lost the wickets of Mark Deyal and Nicholas Pooran. However, the complexion of the innings changed once captain Pollard came out to bat, as he put on a sensational stand with Guptill that swung the momentum of the game. Guptill, who struck nine sixes in his innings, would eventually reach his century in the final over, coming from just 58 balls. It was the first century of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and catapulted Trinbago Knight Riders to an imposing total.

Barbados Royals suffered a severe setback in their chase as both openers, Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers, were dismissed in the opening over by Andre Russell. Shortly afterwards Alick Athanaze and Laurie Evans would also lose their wickets to leave the Royals reeling at 20/4 in the 5th over. A key moment then occurred as Rovman Powell would lose his wicket with the first ball after the powerplay, with wickets then falling at regular intervals, the Barbados Royals would be bowled out for 61, ensuring Trinbago Knight Riders would win by 133 runs, the largest margin of victory in CPL history.

Barbados Royals will be back in action tomorrow night as they face off against defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs at the Kensington Oval.

Barbados Royals 161/4 (Athanaze 76, Evans 30; Green 2/21, Wasim 1/36) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 160/7(Brooks 78, Wasim 33; Holder 2/19, Ahmad 2/42) by 6 wickets

Barbados Royals returned to winnings ways in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a six wicket victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Royals won the toss and opted to field first and it proved to be an inspired decision in the early passages of the game.

The Tallawahs innings imploded inside the PowerPlay with the loss of three wickets but good recovery batting at the back end led by Shamarh Brooks ensured the Tallawahs set a tricky 161 for the Royals to win.

In reply the Royals faced similar problem to the Tallawahs, losing key wickets in the PowerPlay, but Alick Athanaze’s statement knock of 76 was the foundation for a successful chase that saw the Royals home with an over to spare.

The Tallawahs attempts to set a competitive total were dealt a huge blow inside the PowerPlay. Losing King, Mckenzie and Hales in quick succession left the Tallawahs teetering at 25/3 at the end of six overs.

Shamarh Brooks and Raymon Reifer consolidated after the initial drama with a 54 run partnership but Qais Ahmad cleaned up Reifer to keep the Royals well on top.

Brooks was not to be denied however and his 78 from 40 balls proved crucial in keeping the Tallawahs in the game. This was supplemented by Imad Wasim’s late order hitting to get the Tallawahs up to 160/7 at the end of their 20 overs.

161 was a tricky chase for the Royals to navigate and when they lost both Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers in the PowerPlay the game looked set for a tight finish.

However, Athanaze and Laurie Evans’ partnership of 89 ensured the Royals entered the final five overs with a gettable equation to navigate.

Chris Green removed Laurie Evans in the 16th over and Salman Irshad got Alick Athanaze to top edge one to the fine leg boundary for 76 with 12 balls to go but Rovman Powell and Jason Holder saw the Royals home to put them right back in the playoff race.

Guyana Amazon Warriors 186/6 (Paul 41*, Hetmyer 36; Thomas 3/26, Linde 1/18) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 88 (Bosch 27, Linde 13; Pretorius 3/17, Motie 2/15) by 98 runs

Guyana Amazon Warriors moved to the top of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a comfortable 98 run victory over the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

The Patriots won the toss and opted to field first and that initially appeared to be an inspired decision when the Warriors were restricted to 55/4 inside the first seven overs but excellent batting at the back end powered the Warriors to an imposing 186/6

In reply the Patriots never got close to the victorious total. Having lost four wickets in the PowerPlay the contest was all but over before it began. Wickets continue to fall regularly to see the Patriots bowled out for 88.

The Amazon Warriors initially made a good start to the PowerPlay racing to 32 inside the first three overs before Oshane Thomas’ double strike in the fourth over brought the Patriots into the game. Saim Ayub was caught on the boundary for 21 before Hazratullah Zazai nicked behind to Andre Fletcher for 7.

Two wickets became four when George Linde dismissed Azam Khan in the first over after the PowerPlay and Thomas returned to have Hope caught in the covers to leave the Amazon Warriors in trouble at 55/4.

However, the Guyanese pair of Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul put on a 57 run partnership to rebuild the innings before Dominic Drakes dismissed Hetmyer with the short ball.

Dwaine Pretorius and Paul combined to put together a partnership of 48 from 31 balls to ensure the Warriors entered the back end of the innings with significant momentum and Romario Shepherd added the finishing touches to leave the Patriots an imposing 187 to chase in reply.

The Patriots were always likely to be up against it chasing 187 to win and their task was made even more difficult when they lost Andre Fletcher, Evin Lewis, Will Smeed and Sherfane Rutherford inside the PowerPlay.

Having stumbled to 43/4 at the end of the opening six overs there was to be no respite or recovery as the Warriors kept the pressure on to dismiss the Patriots for 88 runs.

The win means the Warriors continue to be the only unbeaten side in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Saint Lucia Kings 195/6 (Charles 78, Munro 33; Van der Merwe 3/40, Holder 2/40) beat Barbados Royals 105 (Young 20, Holder 18; Joseph 3/7, Hatzoglu 2/4) by 90 runs

The Saint Lucia Kings reclaimed top spot in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a dominant 90 run victory over the Barbados Royals.

The Royals won the toss and opted to field first but they were to run into Johnson Charles in imperious form. The opener blasted 78 and contributions at the back end saw the Kings post a healthy 195/6.

In reply the Royals chase was over before it began as they lost the top five batters inside the PowerPlay. They never recovered from that huge setback and were eventually all out for 105.

The Kings got their innings off to a tremendous start led by the power of Johnson Charles.

Having reached 69/0 at the end of the PowerPlay the foundation was set for a huge total and they were able to reach 97 before the loss of their first wicket, Colin Munro holing out to the deep square boundary for 33.

Sean Williams stay at the crease was a brief one but at the other end Charles continued to make hay. Only when Jason Holder returned in the 16th over did the Kings momentum get momentarily halted. Two wickets in the over saw the departure of Shadrack Descarte and Charles himself for 78.

However quick fire contributions at the death from Roshon Primus, Sikander Raza and Roston Chase ensured the Kings set an imposing total.

The Royals never got to grips with the chase and were effectively out of the contest by the end of the PowerPlay.

Alzarri Joseph, Matthew Forde and Roshon Primus were destroyers in chief as they ran through the top five batters to leave the Royals 40/5 at the end of the first six overs.

Despite a few big hits from the lower middle order the Royals suffered without a firm base to build from and eventually folded for 105 all out.

The victory for the Kings sent them back to the top of the table while the Barbados Royals will look to bounce back against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the last game of the Barbados leg.

Trinbago Knight Riders 142/8 (Pollard 33, Tucker 30, Deyal 30; Amir 3/20, Pitman 3/27) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 139/7 (King 36, Green 32; Russell 3/34, Salamkheil 2/21) by 2 runs

Trinbago Knight Riders recorded a two run win over defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Jamaica Tallawahs won the toss and chose to field first, producing a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Trinbago Knight Riders to 142/8 after 20 overs. Kelvin Pitman, making his CPL debut, had an outstanding game as he took three wickets, including that of the opposing captain, Kieron Pollard.

The Tallawahs would have a bright start to their chase but would lose four wickets in the first ten overs to find themselves in trouble. Waqar Salamkheil and Andre Russell, would prove decisive, taking five wickets between them and restricting runs as the Tallawahs faltered to 139/7, losing by just 2 runs.

The Jamaican franchise got off to an ideal start to the game with experienced seamer Mohammad Amir delivering an opening maiden over. Openers Martin Guptil and Mark Deyal would however bat through the powerplay and build a solid foundation to the Knight Riders innings with a 58 run partnership. The complexion of the tie would then completely change as the Knight Riders lost three wickets, including that of Nicholas Pooran, for just five runs. Kelvin Pitman, on debut for the Tallawahs, took two of those wickets within the same over in a brilliant display. The Knight Riders attempts to accelerate the scoring were derailed as they would lose five wickets in the last five overs to finish on 142/8.

Jamaica Tallawahs opened their chase with captain Brandon King and Alex Hales, the duo also batting through the powerplay as they put on a 57 run partnership. Brandon King lost his wicket to the leg spin of Salamkheil; Jermaine Blackwood was also dismissed four balls later to a super Nicholas Pooran catch, and when Shamarh Brooks departed the very next ball, the Tallawahs looked in trouble at 58/3. More wickets would tumble and despite a late flurry of runs from Chris Green and Imad Wasim, they would ultimately lose by two runs in a nail-biting finish.

Trinbago Knight Riders will look to continue their winning form as they play their next four games in front of a home crowd.

Barbados Royals 223/2 (Cornwall 102, Powell 49*; Bosch 1/29, Drakes 1/34) beat

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 220/4 (Rutherford 65, Smeed 63,; Cornwall 2/27, Brathwaite 1/66) by eight wickets

Barbados Royals successfully chased 221 runs to complete a remarkable eight wicket win over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots won the toss and chose to bat first, and they reaped the rewards as Andre Fletcher and Will Smeed put together the highest opening partnership of this year’s tournament so far, 115 runs, to galvanise their team. A rapid half-century from captain Sherfane Rutherford, from just 24 balls, would then propel the total to 220/4 after 20 overs.

Barbados Royals would produce a sensational chase in response, Rahkeem Cornwall leading the way with a 42-ball century to ensure they achieved a stunning 8 wicket victory in front of a home crowd.

It was a sublime batting performance from the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, with Andre Fletcher and Will Smeed guiding their team to 70-0 in the PowerPlay. Their partnership would reach 115 before Rahkeem Cornwall would dismiss them both with his offspin. The Patriots continued to try to accelerate the score, and in a tactical move, batter Jyd Goolie was retired out in the 17th over, having scored 22 off 16 balls. Captain Sherfane Rutherford would showcase his destructive abilities, scoring 65 runs in just 27 balls, his innings including five 6s, to allow the Patriots to reach a formidable 220/4 after 20 overs.

Barbados Royals would themselves have an effective PowerPlay; despite losing the wicket of Kyle Mayers, they scored 67 runs in the first six overs of their chase. Rahkeem Cornwall would launch his way to a 23-ball half century, as the Royals continued to find the boundary after the fielding restictions were lifted.

Cornwall would continue to unleash the big shots as he reached a century in just 45 balls, his first CPL century. Cornwall would retire hurt after reaching 102 runs, but Rovman Powell and Alick Athanaze would see the Royals home, ensuring they won by eight wickets, as they finished on 223/2.

The next leg of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will continue on Tuesday evening as the action reaches Trinidad & Tobago.

Guyana Amazon Warriors 175/4 (Ayub 62, Hope 51; Russell 2/29, Khan 2/30) beat Trinbago Knight Riders 172/8 (Hosein 44*, Tucker 38; Smith 3/31, Paul 1/17) by six wickets

Guyana Amazon Warriors maintained their unbeaten start to the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign with a dominant six wicket victory over the Trinbago Knight Riders.

The Amazon Warriors won the toss and opted to field first. The decision went in their favour when they restricted the Knight Riders to 45/2 at the end of the PowerPlay. However, despite taking regular wickets the Knight Riders had several useful cameos throughout their innings to post a challenging 173 to win.

The Amazon Warriors timed their chase perfectly in reply and had an excellent partnership between Saim Ayub and Shai Hope to thank as the two batters scored half centuries to lay the foundation for the Amazon Warriors power hitters to seal the victory at the death.

In the first innings the Knight Riders got off to a bad start losing Mark Deyal and Nicholas Pooran in the PowerPlay, the latter falling to a tremendous one-handed catch from wicket keeper Azam Khan.

When Martin Guptil skied one off the bowling of Imran Tahir to leave the Knight Riders on 57/3 the innings needed rebuilding.

Akeal Hosein and Lorcan Tucker stepped up to task the and put the Knight Riders back in the game before Tucker was run out for 38 off 25 balls.

Andre Russell kept the momentum up by hitting a couple of Republic Bank maximums before he departed for a quickfire 14. His dismissal brought Kieron Pollard to the wicket and the captain responded with a brutal 25 from 12 balls, however like those before him he failed to kick on.

Ultimately the innings was underpinned by Akeal Hosein. His unbeaten 44 helping to guide the Knight Riders to a competitive score of 172/8.

Much like the Knight Riders the Amazon Warriors were to get their innings off to an inauspicious start. Chandrapaul Hemraj falling inside the first two overs for 10.

However, Ayub and Hope went on to lay the foundation for the Amazon Warriors chase with a brilliantly constructed partnership of 93 from 67 balls.

Despite Ayub (62) and Hope (51) eventually falling at the back end of the innings. Azam Khan and Shimron Hetmyer hit several Republic Bank maximums to seal the win in style.

The victory means the Amazon Warriors return to the top of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table.

Trinbago Knight Riders 208/6 (Pooran 102, Russell 39,; Holder 2/39, Ahmad 1/27) beat Barbados Royals 166/7 (Mayers 70, Evans 20, van der Merwe 20; Salamkheil 2/18, Hosein 2/21) by 42 runs

Trinbago Knight Riders earned a valuable win as they defeated Barbados Royals by 42 runs in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Barbados Royals won the toss and chose to field first, however Nicholas Pooran would score a fantastic century as the Knight Riders posted a sizeable total of 208/6 after 20 overs.

The Royals were unable to chase down that total despite a valiant 70 from Kyle Mayers, as the spin bowling of Waqar Salamkheil and Akeal Hosein played a crucial role in restricting the Royals to 166/7 after 20 overs.

Opener Mark Deyal went early in the Knight Riders innings to a superb Roelof van der Merwe catch on the boundary, however Nicholas Pooran and Martin Guptill would rebuild with a steady partnership of 56 before Guptill lost his wicket, and two balls later, for the second evening in a row, captain Kieron Pollard was run out.

At 106-4 the Knight Riders were in a precarious position, however, Pooran and Andre Russell would create fireworks in front of a packed home crowd, launching sixes and combining for an 82 run partnership off just 36 balls. Pooran would go on to score a brilliant century, his second at the CPL, as the Knight Riders ended on 208/6 after 20 overs.

Barbados Royals suffered a major setback early in their chase as Akeal Hosein would grab the wicket of Rahkeem Cornwall in the third over. Despite a disciplined bowling performance from the Knight Riders led by Akeal Hosein and Waqar Salamkheil, Kyle Mayers would continue to score runs and eventually reached his half century. Mayers was dismissed for 70 from an Ali Khan delivery, and after that the run rate would prove to be too much for the Royals, as they finished on 166/7, losing the contest by 42 runs.

The win means Trinbago Knight Riders now have 9 points as they look to qualify for the play-off leg of the 2023 Republic Bank CPL.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 150/6 (Fletcher 93*, Rutherford 17; Pierre 2/18, Chase 2/25) beat Saint Lucia Kings 149/7 (Descarte 43, Charles 42; Nedd 2/14, Howell 2/31) by four wickets

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots earned their first win of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a thrilling four wicket victory over the Saint Lucia Kings.

The Patriots won the toss and chose to field first, with 22 year old spinner Ashmead Nedd producing a clinical spell to help restrict the Saint Lucia Kings to 149/7 after 20 overs. Shadrack Descarte was the stand-out in the King’s innings, scoring 43 off 31 balls.

The chase by the Patriots was dominated by a sparkling innings from Andre Fletcher, his 93 not out taking the Patriots over the finish line with one ball to spare, despite the King’s spin trio of Khary Pierre, Roston Chase and Sikandar Raza taking wickets throughout the innings, it was not to be enough as the Patriots got over the line.

Saint Lucia Kings opened their innings with the experienced duo of Colin Munro and Johnson Charles, however, Munro would lose his wicket in the third over, before Sean Williams and Roston Chase would both be dismissed in quick succession to leave the Kings reeling at 22-3 after five overs. Ashmead Nedd and Benny Howell were particularly effective with the ball during this period. Johnson Charles and Shadrack Descarte would then rebuild the innings for the Kings, a 73-run partnership helping to drive the side to 149/7 after 20 overs.

Evin Lewis would lose his wicket to the spin of Roston Chase in the second over of the Patriot’s chase. Saint Lucia Kings would utilise further spin in the powerplay, with Khary Pierre taking the wickets of Will Smeed and Jyd Goolie. Despite this, Andre Fletcher launched a counter-attack to give the Patriots hope of a victory. Sikandar Raza then took the big wicket of Sherfane Rutherford to set up a tense finale.

Alzarri Joseph would concede just one over in a magnificent penultimate over to swing the momentum towards the Kings, but it was eventually Andre Fletcher, who was battling injury, who scored a six in the final over to chase down the 150 run target with one ball remaining.

Saint Lucia Kings will be hoping to bounce back tomorrow evening as they face Trinbago Knight Riders.

KNIGHT RIDERS REACH TOP OF THE TABLE
Trinbago Knight Riders 155/3 (Pooran 54, Guptill 53*; Wasim 2/28, Green 1/29) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 154/8 (Wasim 62, Blackwood 29; Khan 3/27, Narine 2/29) by 7 wickets

Trinbago Knight Riders reached the summit of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table with a comfortable seven wicket win against the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Knight Riders won the toss and opted to field first and that was to prove to be an inspired decision as the Jamaica Tallawahs struggled to post a competitive total.

Other than Imad Wasim who hit a valiant 62 no one else was able to stick with him to help the Tallawahs pose a more challenging total than 154/8.

The Knight Riders were to make light of the chase as Nicholas Pooran followed up his unbeaten century with a rapid 54 off 35 balls. That knock laid the foundation and the Knight Riders were to chase down the remainder of the total with minimum fuss.

Earlier the Tallawahs found their innings choked by spin as Brandon King and Amir Jangoo fell inside the PowerPlay with the defending champions only reaching 29/2 at the end of the first six overs.

The squeeze continued outside the PowerPlay with the Tallawahs leaving themselves a lot to do at the backend as they reached 102/4 with five overs to go.

However, Imad Wasim made light of the pitch with a timely half century off 26 balls but when he fell in the final over the Tallawahs were unable to add enough late blows to make their total a more threatening one.

The Trinbago Knight Riders chased down the 155 required with ease. Fifties from Nicholas Pooran (54) and Martin Guptill (53*) with the added theatrics of some Andre Russell muscle saw the Knight Riders see the game home with 16 balls to spare.

Guyana Amazon Warriors 181/9 (Ayub 58, Hope 50; Brathwaite 4/27, McCoy 2/25) beat Barbados Royals 178/8 (Evans 44, Powell 39; Pretorius 2/24, Motie 2/38) by 3 runs

Guyana Amazon Warriors maintained their unbeaten start to the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a last over thriller against the Barbados Royals.

The Amazon Warriors won the toss and opted to bat first and despite losing a flurry of wickets at the backend of their innings they posted an ominous 181/9.

Scoreboard pressure saw the Royals lose early wickets in the PowerPlay but they were always in sight of the required run rate in their reply. Having seemingly timed their chase to perfection the Royals needed six runs from the final over but Gudakesh Motie held his nerve to seal a dramatic win for the Amazon Warriors.

Earlier Amazon Warriors had surprised everyone by opening with Motie and Saim Ayub and the experiment did not bear fruit as Motie fell for 7 runs inside the opening 9 balls.

Ayub and Hope laid a foundation following that dismissal to leave the Amazon Warriors handily placed on 83/1 at the halfway stage of the innings.

The 98 run partnership was eventually broken when Carlos Braithwaite dismissed Ayub caught and bowled for 57. Azam Khan fell shortly afterwards but the Amazon Warriors continued to force the pace before Obed McCoy got Hope to chop on to his stumps for an even 50.

Late over fielding penalties saw the Royals get punished but Brathwaite continued to be a thorn in the Amazon Warriors side dismissing Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd and Odean Smith in the 19th over before Jason Holder followed suit in the last over to remove Dwaine Pretorius and Keemo Paul.

The Amazon Warriors still posted an imposing total of 181/9 that left the Royals an almighty task ahead.

While 182 to win was always likely to be a tall order the Royals did not help their assignment by losing both their openers inside the PowerPlay. However, the Royals reached the six over mark at 54/2 and ensured they had a base from which to mount a charge.

A 60-run partnership between Laurie Evans and Alick Athanaze was eventually bought to a close when Odean Smith got Evans to commit to a shot too early and Athanaze himself was to follow 12 balls later.

Just when it seemed the Royals were going to fall to defeat captain Rovman Powell blasted 39 from 19 balls to leave the Royals the equation of 31 runs needed from 19 balls.

Once Braithwaite and Justin Greaves had got the equation down to six of the final over it looked a forgone conclusion but the Warriors and Motie closed out a famous win.

Trinbago Knight Riders 169/3 (Deyal 57, Tucker 38; Joseph 2/42, Chase 1/25) beat Saint Lucia Kings 167/3 (Munro 72*, Williams 34*; Seales 1/23, Salamkheil 1/23) by 7 wickets

Trinbago Knight Riders ensured a top-two finish and place in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Qualifier with a seven wicket victory over the Saint Lucia Kings.

The home team won the toss and chose to field first, but it was their former player Colin Munro who was the star of the Saint Lucia Kings innings, scoring an unbeaten 72 runs to take the side to 167/3 after 20 overs.

The Knight Riders chase was headlined by a superb half century from Mark Deyal, alongside support from wicket-keeper Lorcan Tucker and Andre Russell, to take the side to a seven wicket victory in their final game this season in front of their home crowd.

Saint Lucia Kings lost powerful opener Johnson Charles in the PowerPlay, as fast bowler Jayden Seales celebrated with a wicket on his birthday, but the Kings would rebuild as Colin Munro and Roston Chase patiently scored runs in their 76 run partnership, which came off 58 balls.

Chase was dismissed off a Waqar Salamkheil delivery and that was followed shortly afterwards with the big wicket of captain Sikandar Raza, who fell to Sunil Narine. A late cameo from Sean Williams, who smashed 34 runs off 17 balls would see the Saint Lucia Kings score 58 runs in the last 5 overs to finish on 167/3.

Trinbago Knight Riders had an early scare as opener Martin Guptill was given out LBW from just the third ball of the innings, but the decision was overturned on review. Guptill eventually lost his wicket in the fourth over, and when Nicholas Pooran, leading run scorer for the franchise this season, lost his wicket in the final ball of the powerplay to an Alzarri Joseph delivery, the Knight Riders looked in trouble at 45-2.

However opener Mark Deyal would compose a brilliant half century, reaching 57 before being caught on the boundary by Peter Hatzoglou. Lorcan Tucker would provide invaluable support with 38 runs, before a flurry of boundaries from Andre Russell would ensure the Trinbago Knight Riders would win.

CPL action now moves on to the final leg in Guyana, with the Guyana Amazon Warriors taking on the Jamaica Tallawahs on Wednesday evening.

Guyana Amazon Warriors 155/3 (Ayub 85, Nandu 37; Springer 1/23, Irshad 1/27) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 152/5 (King 52, Allen 21; Pretorius 2/33, Shepherd 1/19 Tahir 1/19) by 7 wickets

Guyana Amazon Warriors extended their unbeaten run in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and ensured a spot in Qualifier 1 with a seven wicket victory over Jamaica Tallawahs at Providence.

The Warriors won the toss and chose to field first, despite a strong start by opener Brandon King, the Jamaica Tallawahs were unable to score runs fluently as they were restricted to 152/5 after 20 overs.

The home side got off to a dream start in their chase, as openers Saim Ayub and Matthew Nandu would share a 112 run partnership to put the side in firm control. Ayub would go on to score a brilliant 85 to help take the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a comfortable win.

Jamaica Tallawahs had lost Alex Hales early on in their innings, bowled by Romario Shepherd, but Brandon King would play some exquisite shots as he reached his half century from 29 balls.
balls

However, Guyana Amazon Warriors would counter, as Gudakesh Motie got the key wicket of King, and that slowed down the runs, as Jamaica Tallawahs were unable to find the boundary for six consecutive middle overs. South African duo Dwaine Pretorius and Imran Tahir were key for the Warriors with the ball as Jamaica Tallawahs finished on 152/5 after 20 overs.

Guyana Amazon Warriors handed Matthew Nandu a CPL debut, and alongside Saim Ayub, they forged an opening partnership that swung the game firmly in the Warrior’s favour. Ayub would reach his half century from 34 balls; his third consecutive CPL half-century. Chris Green would get the wicket of Matthew Nandu in the 13th over, but Ayub would continue to dazzle, scoring 85 runs and taking the side to the brink of a win before losing his wicket. Shai Hope and Odean Smith would eventually see Guyana Amazon Warriors over the line.

Guyana Amazon Warriors return to CPL action tomorrow evening where they will be taking on the Saint Lucia Kings.

KINGS SECURE PLAYOFF QUALIFICATION

Saint Lucia Kings 170/3 (Rajapaksa 86, Munro 55; Shepherd 1/15, Tahir 1/34) beat Guyana Amazon Warriors 167/5 (Khan 40, Hope 38; Joseph 2/31, Raza 1/14) by seven wickets

The Saint Lucia Kings confirmed their place in the 2023 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Playoffs following a comfortable seven wicket victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The Amazon Warriors won the toss and opted to bat first and it was a decision that was to backfire as the innings never really got going until the final five overs. Despite some late power hitting the Amazon Warriors could only post 167/5 which appeared subpar at first glance.

That proved to be correct as the Saint Lucia Kings confirmed that by chasing down the 168 to win with 15 balls remaining.

Earlier the Amazon Warriors suffered a slow start as Matthew Nandu was run out for three inside the PowerPlay and that setback contributed to the Warriors only reaching 35/1 at the end of the initial six overs.

That sedate start was difficult for the home side to overcome as the CPL’s top run scorer, Saim Ayub, fell for 16 in the ninth over with the score on 50/2.

However, Shai Hope and Azam Khan then Khan and Shimron Hetmyer helped rebuild the innings before late fireworks from Keemo Paul and Romario Shepherd ensured 72 runs were added in the final five overs to set the Kings 168 to win.

That 168 proved to be well under par as the Kings made easy work of the chase.

Although Johnson Charles fell for 1 in the second over that was to be as good as it got for the Amazon Warriors as Colin Munro and Bhanuka Rajapaksa put on a devastating partnership of 132 runs from 82 balls.

Rajapaksa holed out for 86 to deep mid-wicket and Munro followed shortly after for 55, but the job was done. It allowed Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza to see the chase home with three overs remaining.

The win ensures the Kings qualify for the playoffs with one game to spare.

Jamaica Tallawahs 178/7 (Springer 38, Allen 33; Nedd 2/25, Linde 2/33) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 119 (Cariah 65, Smeed 13; Amir 4/19, Wasim 3/25) by 59 runs

Jamaica Tallawahs earned a vital 59 run victory over the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to ensure they remained in contention for the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Playoff stage next week.

The Tallawahs won the toss and chose to bat first, despite losing early wickets to the spin of Ashmead Nedd and George Linde, a 62 run seventh wicket partnership between Shamar Springer and Fabian Allen hauled the side to a formidable 178/7 after 20 overs.

Despite a valiant 65 from Yannic Cariah, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots were bowled out for 119, Mohammad Amir taking 4 wickets in a brilliant spell and ensuring the Tallawahs won by 59 runs.

The Jamaican franchise were restricted in the PowerPlay by the bowling of Sheldon Cottrell and Ashmead Nedd, with the latter taking the wickets of Brandon King and Kirk McKenzie to leave the Tallahwahs reeling at 31-2 at the end of the powerplay. When spinner George Linde took two wickets in successive deliveries in the following over, the Tallawahs found themselves in crisis at 34-4.

However Raymon Reifer, Shamar Springer and Fabian Allen would all contribute with runs for the remainder of the innings, as the Tallawahs scored 72 runs from the final 5 overs to reach 178/7. The Patriots fell behind the over rate and were given a red card for the final over, with Cariah leaving the field.

The Patriots lost their experienced openers Evin Lewis and Andre Fletcher in the PowerPlay, while big hitters Will Smeed and Sherfane Rutherford would lose their wickets shortly afterwards, with Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim bowling superbly. Yannic Cariah would score 65 off just 40 balls, his highest score in T20 cricket, but it was to be in vain as the Patriots were bowled out for 119, ending their CPL campaign with a 59 run loss.

Jamaica Tallawahs return to CPL action tomorrow morning where they will be taking on the Saint Lucia Kings.

Guyana Amazon Warriors 177/4 (Hope 54*, Smith 44; Deyal 1/21, Hinds 1/26) beat Trinbago Knight Riders 176/8 (Carty 83, Deyal 37; Tahir 3/12, Paul 1/11) by 6 wickets

Guyana Amazon Warriors completed a six wicket win and the double against the Trinbago Knight Riders as the two sides played out a dress rehearsal ahead of Wednesday night’s Qualifier 1.

The Amazon Warriors won the toss and opted to field first and the decision went in their favour as a Knight Riders side shorn of Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine posted a competitive 176/8.

The Amazon Warriors timed their chase perfectly in reply, Shai Hope carried on his good form with an unbeaten 54 to ensure the game was won with 10 balls to spare.

Earlier on a much changed Knight Riders got off to a bad start when Martin Guptil was run out for one but Mark Deyal’s quick fire 37 from 20 balls ensured the Knight Riders were able to post a healthy 49/2 by the end of the PowerPlay.

Chadwick Walton and Keacy Carty put on a 59 run partnership before Imran Tahir cleaned up Walton for 25.

However, that merely signalled the moment for Carty to press the accelerator. He took an extreme liking to Odean Smith, taking him for 26 runs in the 15th over to bring up his half century.

Carty was to go on to make a brilliantly constructed 83 before he was eventually stumped. That wicket was one of three in the 19th over as Imran Tahir halted the Knight Riders momentum.

The Knights Riders were to eventually post 176, a total that gave their bowlers something to work with.

In reply the Amazon Warriors got off to the best possible start in the PowerPlay. Odean Smith partnered Saim Ayub and the pair reached 56/0 at the end of six overs but Ayub was to fall immediately after the fielding restrictions were lifted, skying a delivery from Akeal Hosein.

Odean Smith was to go on to make his best score of the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) – benefitting from three drops on his way to a sparkling 44, Smith’s knock ensured the Warriors only needed 60 from 44 balls with eight wickets remaining.

It was an equation the Amazon Warriors negotiated with ease as they romped to victory with two overs remaining.

HALES STORMS TALLAWAHS TO VICTORY

Jamaica Tallawahs 201/5 (Hales 119*, Wasim 41; Chase 2/33, Joseph 1/28) beat Saint Lucia Kings 79 (Rajapaska 22, Forde 13; Green 4/15, Amir 2/17) by 122 runs

The Jamaica Tallawahs all but assured themselves of a place in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Playoffs following a comprehensive 122 run victory over the Saint Lucia Kings.

The Saint Lucia Kings won the toss and opted to field first and that backfired as they ran into an Alex Hales storm. Hales produced his career best to propel the Tallawahs to 201/5 a total that always looked impenetrable.

The Kings were never in the game from that moment and the Tallawahs wrapped up victory inside 15 overs bowling the Kings out for 79.

The Tallawahs were hampered by the enforced absence of captain Brandon King, however Hales stepped up to the plate to blaze his way to his highest individual T20 career score of 119 not out.

Hales and Imad Wasim put together a magnificent partnership of 116 from 52 balls to help set a target of 202 to win – an equation that always looked likely to be enough to secure their spot in the Caribbean Premier League eliminator.

In reply the Kings were struggling from the start of the PowerPlay, Mohammed Amir dismissed makeshift opener Roshon Primus and Leonardo Julien before Chris Green got in on the act to trap Bhanuka Rajapaksa in front for 22 and Sean Williams for a duck.

The Kings were bowled out for 79 with Chris Green the wicket taker in chief, leading the way with a devastating spell of 4/1

MAGNIFICENT HOPE CENTURY ELIMINATES ROYALS

Guyana Amazon Warriors 226/7 (Hope 106, Anderson 47; McCoy 2/36, Holder 2/50) beat Barbados Royals 138/6 (Clarke 54, Brathwaite 18; Tahir 3/23, Motie 2/11) by 88 runs

It was a record-breaking night for the Guyana Amazon Warriors as they posted their highest ever total to earn an 88 run victory over the Barbados Royals in 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) action at Providence.

Barbados Royals had won the toss and chose to bowl first, with the Guyana Amazon Warriors causing carnage, Shai Hope scoring the second fastest century in CPL history from just 41 balls, on route to the Amazon Warriors scoring 226/7 after 20 overs, their highest team score in the CPL.

The total proved to be too much for the Barbados Royals, spinners Gudakesh Motie and Imran Tahir taking wickets at frequent intervals to restrict the Royals to 138/6, losing by 88 runs.

With play-off qualification already secured, Guyana Amazon Warriors started with attacking intent, opening with Saim Ayub and Odean Smith, who put together 35 runs in the first three overs. Ayub would then lose his wicket, bringing Shai Hope into the match, who played one of the most memorable innings in CPL history.

Hope's innings included 17 boundaries and was supported by Kevlon Anderson, making his T20 debut, who would score 47. Shimron Hetmyer’s late cameo would see the Amazon Warriors finish on 226/7.

Barbados Royals' chase suffered an early blow as opener Rahkeem Cornwall departed in the third over, while Gudakesh Motie used his variations to dismiss Justin Greaves and Laurie Evans, to leave the Royals 42/3 with the run rate gradually increasing.

Once Rovman Powell was bowled by Imran Tahir the odds became stacked against the Royals, and they were unable to keep up with the required run rate despite a half century from Rivaldo Clarke, finishing on 138/6 and losing by 88 runs. The result means that the Royals do not qualify for the CPL play-offs.

CPL moves to the play-off stages next week as Guyana Amazon Warriors face Trinbago Knight Riders in Qualifier 1, while Saint Lucia Kings take on Jamaica Tallawahs in the Eliminator.

TALLAWAHS MOVE ONE STEP CLOSER TO RETAINING TROPHY

Jamaica Tallawahs 126/5 (King 30, Reifer 30*; Forde 4/23, Pierre 1/26) beat Saint Lucia Kings 125/9 (Chase 40, Raza 19; Allen 4/25, Green 2/19) by five wickets

The Jamaica Tallawahs will head to Qualifier 2 of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) following a comprehensive five wicket defeat of the Saint Lucia Kings.

The Tallawahs won the toss and opted to field first and that proved to be an inspired decision as they ripped through the Kings batting to restrict them to 125/9.

The Kings never adapted to the slow track and this was made harder when they ran into a Fabian Allen Playoff masterclass as the all-rounder led the way for the Tallawahs taking 4/25.

The Kings were always up against it from that moment and the Tallawahs duly wrapped up victory inside 18 overs having been given a great foundation by Brandon King and Alex Hales.

The Kings had their moments with the ball while trying to defend a modest 12 run target, Matthew Forde took a career best 4/19 but that was as good as it got for the Kings.

Earlier the Tallawahs had suffered an initial setback when they lost Mohammed Amir to injury three balls into the match but the remaining Tallawahs bowling attack made light of the absence of their talisman.

Both Colin Munro and Johnson Charles fell inside the PowerPlay as the Kings innings went struggled to get going with wickets falling outside the PowerPlay.

Green picked up his second wicket to remove Bhanuka Rajapasa before Nicholson Gordon got in on the act. The fast bowler removed Shadrack Descarte for four to leave the Kings in trouble at 59/4 at the halfway stage of the innings.

Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and when Fabian Allen removed Sikander Raza and Roston Chase in the 16th over the Kings were all at sea. Allen added two more wickets in the 18th over to end a brilliant spell with 4/25.

Just when it appeared the Kings were on the brink of being bowled out Khary Pierre and Peter Hatzoglou got them up to 125 to give them something to bowl at.

In reply the Tallawahs all but confirmed victory when King and Hales raced to 43 in the first four overs. King eventually fell for 30 and Hales for 24 but the damage was done.

The honour of seeing the Tallawahs home fell to Raymon Reifer who took the drama out of the chase with a sensibly constructed 30 not out.

The Tallawahs victory now means that they head to Qualifier 2 on Friday night.

KNIGHT RIDERS SECURE PLACE IN FINAL

Trinbago Knight Riders 167/3 (Walton 80*, Pooran 33; Pretorius 2/36, Tahir 1/30) beat Guyana Amazon Warriors 166/7 (Ayub 49, Khan 36; Salamkheil 2/28, Hinds 2/32) by 7 wickets

Trinbago Knight Riders secured their place in the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final on Sunday with a 7 wicket win over Guyana Amazon Warriors in Qualifier 1.

Trinbago Knight Riders had won the toss and chose to bowl first, led by Waqar Salamkheil and Terrence Hinds they produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Guyana Amazon Warriors to 166/7 after 20 overs, Despite another super innings from Saim Ayub, it was Guyana Amazon Warriors lowest score this season when batting first.

The Knight Riders chase was headlined by Chadwick Walton, with the opener ensuring his side never fell below the run rate and eventually guiding them across the finish line with a brilliant innings of 80 not out that ensured they progressed to the final on Sunday.

Ayub continued his brilliant maiden CPL season with a score of 49 as he once again opened with Odean Smith, their 53 run partnership would prove to be the foundation of the Amazon Warriors innings. Despite losing leading run scorer Shai Hope in the ninth over, they would manage to reach 166/7 largely thanks to the late runs scored by Romario Shepherd and Gudakesh Motie. Salamkheil and Hinds would both prove to be vital for the Knight Riders, as they took wickets and contained runs.

Trinbago Knight Riders raced away to 41-0 after 4 overs as Chadwick Walton and Mark Deyal combined to give their side an ideal start to the chase. Imran Tahir would bring himself on to bowl and strike with his first ball, trapping Deyal LBW. Nicholas Pooran would come in next and forge a 51 run partnership with Walton before he was caught off the bowling of Dwaine Pretorius.

However, Walton would silence the Providence crowd with his innings of 80*, which included nine boundaries, supported by captain Kieron Pollard batting alongside him. The Knight Riders would win by 7 wickets to secure their place in Sunday’s final.

AMAZON WARRIORS BEAT TALLAWAHS TO MAKE FINAL

Guyana Amazon Warriors 182/6 (Khan 54, Hope 40; Gordon 2/27, Springer 2/40) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 101 (Wasim 43*, Hales 15; Tahir 3/7, Pretorius 2/21) by 81 runs

The Guyana Amazon Warriors will contest the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final after a convincing 81 run victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs in Qualifier two.

The Tallawahs won the toss and opted to field first and they produced a disciplined bowling performance to ensure the Amazon Warriors were restricted to 182/6. Azam Khan produced the star knock in the Amazon Warriors innings, his 54 at the back-end propelling Guyana to a competitive total.

The chase was always going to be a steep one for the Tallawahs and that equation became all the harder when they lost four wickets in the PowerPlay.

It was a position they never recovered from eventually succumbing to 101 all out.

The Amazon Warriors made a solid start in their batting PowerPlay, reaching 49 for the loss of one wicket. It could have been two but for the faintest of inside edges that saved Shai Hope from being dismissed lbw.

However, Saim Ayub departed for 20 immediately following the end of the PowerPlay, his miscued shot only finding Alex Hales at long on.

Hope and Shimron Hetmyer struggled to add some attacking impetus to the innings but just when it seemed they were ready to accelerate Hope was caught on the boundary for 40.

Hetmyer followed shortly afterwards for 31 – but Romario Shepherd and Azam Khan cashed in at the back end. Khan smashed a brutal 54 runs off 27 balls to give the Amazon Warriors momentum heading into the second half of the game.

If the Tallawahs were to chase the 183 to win, they needed a lightning start in the PowerPlay but they got the opposite of that.

Four wickets fell in the first six overs and the procession continued after the fielding restrictions had been lifted. All of the Guyanese bowlers got in on the act to ensure the Tallawahs were never in the contest.

Imad Wasim added a respectable unbeaten 43 but no one stayed with him as the Tallawahs were eventually bowled out for 101.

The Amazon Warriors victory means they will now contest their sixth Republic Bank CPL final where they will aim to win their first ever title.

Final (N), Providence, September 24, 2023, Caribbean Premier League

Daren Ganga on the pitch report says only Qualifier 1 and 2 were played on this pitch. There is some wear and tear of the footmarks and some highly populated areas on the pitch with grass and root structure which could make it a little tricky. There could be irregular pace and bounce but batting has generally dominated on this track. Conditions aren't overcast so dew isn't expected to have a lot of say today

I hope the Knight Riders make something compelling, I want to see Ayub and Khan bat!

Amazon Warriors are in control at Providence. After 14 overs TKR stands at 80/6. It appears quite challenging for TKR to recover from this situation. They require a strong finisher to help them achieve a competitive total, else its a gonner!

In the crucial final match TKR managed to score 94 runs in 18.1 Overs against the Amazon Warriors. It seems like a very achievable target for the GAW to chase down.
