A friend of mine recently came back from a wedding in Lahore.

He stated that the groom's family had paid a few people to fire into the air continually when they arrived at the wedding venue. Those individuals were firing indiscriminately without a care in the world.

Crazy!

Always wondered about this.

Surely they could use blanks ?

Just where do civilians get these guns from?

Thankfully it's not an issue in India, where gun ownership is pretty low.

Guns - the by product of the Afghanistan Russian invasion.

I recall from school days that having a gun in a household was a rare thing but when that happened, things changed in Pakistan drastically.

It's a macho thing where people want to use live bullets.

I recall going to Pakistan and a relative got a loaded gun out of his unlocked cabinet which his children had access to. He was expecting me to be impressed!

Remember watching kids firing AK’s in the streets of Landhi after the CT17 win. The sooner they ban guns, the better.

I guess it depends where in Pakistan you're in. I know my grandpa was strapped.

Pakistan has a big gun culture

Guns are just the latest iteration. It used to be knives or swords before that. in rural areas weapons were/are needed for protection from bandits. I think only Imran Khan has the long term vision to solve this, he has lived both cultures and we know he reflects the best values from both Pakistan and Britain.

That may be true for larger cities like Karachi but gun culture was prevalent in rural areas well before Soviet invasion.

And to be fair, casualties from celebratory fire in rural areas are rare. Inexperienced operators in densely populated urban areas makes this activity even more dangerous.

In my opinion, government should organize 'gun melas' specially in rural areas where thrill seekers can relieve themselves in relatively safe settings.

I feel that rural areas gun owners were more mature and had 'good' reasons to keep arms (dacoits, land grabbers, family fueds)

City dwellers really have no reason to own more than a hand gun.

My friend has recently returned from Pakistan.

He attended a wedding in Multan where he said guys from the grooms family were fighting over guns that were loaded and that were accidentally fired. I mean how stupid can people be.

It was a miracle that nobody was injured or killed.

This is a big issue, and when ever there is 14 august or New years eve, I tend to stay inside my home or in my car.

Basically when you fire bullets in the air, they than return back from the sky and can hit you bad.

People love to go on roof or outside to watch the fireworks but ignore that if someone is doing aerial firing it can fall back to hit. Always fear for mom when she watches the fireworks from the balcony.

How can people afford bullets etc? Am sure this is expensive?

Deaths from aerial firing on the rise in K-P
Since start of T20 Asia Cup on Aug 27, several people have lost their lives

PESHAWAR:
After the victory of Pakistan in the T20 cricket match against India, gunshots echoed in most of the districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar. Two young men lost their lives in aerial firing in Matni, a suburban area of Peshawar, immediately after the match ended. Sudais and Omer Khayyam were residents of the same neighbourhood who were hit by bullets.

According to the police officials, father of Omer pulled out his pistol and started aerial firing killing two youths on the spot.

Indiscriminate aerial firing was also carried out in Tehkal, where 20-year-old Amir was injured and later succumbed to his injuries during treatment. According to Peshawar Khyber Teaching Hospital spokesperson Muhammad Sajjad, eight injured, including five women and three men, in aerial firing were brought to the hospital after the Pakistan and Afghanistan match.

Since the start of T20 matches on August 27, 2022, dozens of people have been injured in aerial firing incidents in Peshawar. Aerial firing was carried out with M4, Kalashnikov and heavy weapons in the areas of Dalazak Road, Shahpur, Yaka Tut, Tehkal, Hayatabad, Chaghalpura, Gharibabad, Gulbahar, Phandu, Matni, Armar, Chamkani, University Town, Khazana and Dawoodzai.

The presence of arms in every home has also raised a question mark on the efficacy of the law enforcement agencies. According to Peshawar Police spokesperson Muhammad Ilyas, 41 people had been arrested and weapons were recovered from the jurisdictions of various police stations for their involvement in aerial firing after the Pakistan and Afghanistan match.

The spokesperson said that a crackdown against illegal weapons is under way in Peshawar in which more than 4,000 accused have been arrested and cases registered against them.

In the tribal areas of K-P, aerial firing on happy occasions, including weddings, winning cricket matches, birth of children and sighting of Eid and Ramazan moons, is an ancient and proud tradition. But often a stray bullet at such events takes the life or makes one paralysed for life.

Due to the minor penalties and only a few hundred rupees fines on aerial firing, people also showcase their heavy, modern and small weapons in aerial firing as a culture/tradition.

A sad incident took place in Hayatabad area of Peshawar on Chand Raat. A child playing in the street was hit by a stray bullet and was admitted to a hospital where he breathed his last. Six-year-old Mashud, who was born after 28 years, was the only brother of three sisters.

The police’s claims of stopping aerial firing are just claims, as the Peshawar police was criticised on social media over the Hayatabad incident.

Little Mashud, who was enrolled just a few days ago in a playgroup, was with the children in the street when a stray bullet hit him in the head. At first, the family thought that he was bleeding because he fell while playing, but when they took him to the emergency of Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar, they were shocked.

The hospital administration said that the child was shot in the head while playing in the street with other children at night. No one knows where the bullet came from, but is this justice to destroy lives of other people for the sake of one’s own happiness? One can only imagine what Mashud’s mother went through when the children wore new clothes on Eid day and she was praying for the safety of her child. Not just the mother but the whole family was mourning. After struggling between life and death for two days, Mashud died. The funeral of Mashud dampened the joyous occasion of Eid as the whole area mourned.

Is the gun license less restrictive and is it common for Pakistani citizens to have guns at home?

Dangerous practice.

The incidents took place in various areas, including Korangi, Landhi, Lyari, Nazimabad, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, Sohrab Goth, and Golimar.

Police across Karachi’s Central District arrested 14 suspects while the Korangi District police took five men into custody for the aerial firing incidents, with weapons allegedly being recovered in all cases.

According to a statement issued by Zeeshan Shafique, spokesperson for the Central District senior superintendent of police, a total of 14 suspects have been taken into custody within the limits of various police stations and cases have been filed against them.

A suspect was arrested by the Shahrah-i-Noor Jahan police after a child died due to accidental gunfire, the police statement said. It added that a licensed pistol was recovered from the suspect and a first information report (FIR) was registered.

Police stations of Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, New Karachi, Sir Syed, Supermarket, Hyderi Market, Paposhnagar, Joharabad, and Gulbahar each arrested one person involved in aerial firing and recovered arms from them, most of which were licensed.
