Central Punjab & Khyber Pakhtunkhwa declared joint winners of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after final tied

Get Irfan, Arshad and Dhani into a camp with Aaqib. Our test bowling is embarrasing, besides Shaheen. Waqar should be sacked for backing the likes of Musa and Naseem and then not delivering on improving them. They have destroyed Naseem, there is something as exposing someone too soon. Lets face it we dont have guys who will hit 140 consistently so we try for the next best option, guys who can do something with the ball and can hit 130+ consistently. Abbas barely ever gets up to 130 and while he can do stuff with the ball at that pace he is easy to negotiate.

Shaheen is also ordinary in Tests.

At least this KP team of mine is winning something, we are left to cheering for a domestic team now :facepalm

Not for the longer format I am afraid. There are few better longer format talents than him.

You are being too optimistic. HAving watched QAE trophy I see noone other than Hasan Ali even close to International class

This final is more entertaining than Pak vs New Zealand. Wow a counter attack may the best team win

It seems hasan ali has injured himself again. Looks in pain

Damn, hate to see Hassan Ali go down...

I mentioned this in another thread but was told he's bowled long spells and is good to go. The type and amount of fitness issues he's had are life-changing and he will feel them after he retires let alone right now.

They have to be very careful with his workload including how much he plays in FC cricket. Otherwise, he will continue to breakdown after a few matches.

wao Hassan you beauty, if he can pull this off, this would be nothing short of miracle.

Was bound to happen I'm afraid. He's been looking unfit in the last two matches. Wasn't really bending his back. Playing so many 4-day games back-to-back after an injury was asking for trouble.

Really feel for him but he should've been smarter than this.

If we're looking for lower-order hitters in T20, what's wrong with Safi Abdullah? Looks like a proper hitter.

wth was team management doing, and at this rate I would still take inured Hasan ali for his batting alone.

If Hasan Ali pulls it off, this will be the greatest batting performance by a specialist bowler in the history of domestic cricket anywhere in the world.

100 for Hasan Ali in 58 balls chasing 356 in the domestic final when team was down and out Wowww

Just 10 needed now

My goodness me what has Hasan had for breakfast?

And why isnt this thread getting enough attention? Disappointing

Most pathetic captaincy i have ever seen. KP deserve to lose they went to try and buy wickets way too soon. Bowling Sajid and Khalid with and in and out field was their best chance.

Incredible game! Just needed a single did Waqas. Oh well, a fitting result in the end, I guess.

As its a tie. Does that mean CP's odd declaration to stop KPK getting a bonus point work? Is this game settled by bonus points total or is the trophy shared.

Their declaration worked! The bonus points are tied at 6 points now, instead of one more point to KPK - as a result, because the match is tied, it goes to bonus points which are also tied, so the trophy is being shared.

Crazy.

What?

They were looking to tie the game or win the match?

I was trying to make sense of Hasan's declaration but woah! This was sheer genius at play.

Who is the coach / main strategist of this team???

Injured again. Oh no. He did play 10 back to back first class matches in a row after a long injury. In hindsight, he should have had a rest but I doubt CP would have qualified to the finals without his contribution.

Man of the Match: Hasan Ali
Best Wicketkeeper 500,000 Rehan Afridi
Best Bowler Sajid Khan Rs 500,000
Best Batsman Kamran Ghulam Rs 500,000

Hasan Ali has surely earned a place on the test team now.

Solid batting, brilliant bowling, and some pretty good leadership to become the head of the bowling pack.

Shahid anwar .
Another brave decision
Apparently he decided to not play kamran akmal in final after kami recovered from injury. He persisted with ali shan which riled up kami and later complained to pcb 😂

If he is taking such brilliant decisions, he needs to be looked at as a potential national coach in future or at least he needs to be hired to help the national team in some capacity.

Hasan Ali’s scintillating century resulted in the final of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21 ending in a dramatic tie and Central Punjab, the title defenders, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sharing the coveted trophy at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

The Central Punjab captain blasted to his maiden triple-digit score in first-class cricket as he scored 106 not out from just 61 balls. Hasan’s stay at the crease was studded with 10 fours and seven sixes.

He arrived at the crease in the first over after Lunch with Central Punjab 154 runs away from the 356-run target with four wickets in hand and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa dominating the proceedings.

The 26-year-old turned the tide quickly into his team’s favour as he spanked Sajid Khan, the highest wicket-taker of the season with 67 scalps at 25.09 runs per dismissal, for two sixes and three fours in the 102nd over, before smashing pacer Irfanullah Shah for a six and a four in the next over.

He crossed the 50-run mark with a massive six off Arshad Iqbal on his 27th ball and brought up his century on 58th delivery.

Hasan won the Best Player of the Tournament award for his all-round contribution in Central Punjab’s epic resurgence, which saw them win four of their last five group-matches and play the final of the competition after being at the bottom of the six-team points table at the half-way stage. He took 43 wickets – the most for a pacer – in nine matches at 20.07 and scored 273 runs, which also included two half-centuries, at 24.82.

He was also named Player of the Final.

Over the course of his stay, Hasan stitched a match-defining partnership of 70 runs from 50 balls with Ahmed Safi Abdullah, who made 35 from 23 balls, after he had spearheaded a 47-run stand for the eight-wicket with Bilawal Iqbal (seven off 18 balls).

With the scores tied, Waqas Maqsood, in his attempt to clear the mid-on fielder, handed a catch to Kamran Ghulam off Sajid as the match ended in a dramatic finish in the afternoon session of the final day’s play.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had gotten off to a perfect start with Arshad accounting for Mohammad Saad in the first over of the day. Five overs later, Sajid, the off-spinner who was named the Best Bowler of the Tournament, dismissed Saad Nasim, which compounded Central Punjab’s woes.

Usman Salahuddin, the top-scorer for Central Punjab till that stage with 202-ball 67 was the next batsman to be dismissed which left the batting side with half of their batting line-up back in the pavilion at the score of 179.

Sajid with four for 86 was once again the standout bowler for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Arshad took three wickets for 100 runs.

Kamran Ghulam, who set the record for most runs in a Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season on Sunday during his fifth century of this edition, was named Best Batsman of the Tournament, while his Khyber Pakhtunkhwa teammate Rehan Afridi (35 dismissals in 11 matches) won the Best Wicketkeeper of the Tournament award.

Scores in brief:

Match tied between Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at National Stadium

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 300 all out in 97.5 overs (Kamran Ghulam 76, Adil Amin 75, Israrullah 61; Hasan Ali 4-62, Waqas Maqsood 3-59) and 312 all out in 93.5 overs (Kamran Ghulam 108, Israrullah 63, Khalid Usman 53; Waqas Maqsood 4-77, Bilawal Iqbal 2-57)

First innings points: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 6 (three batting points, three bowling points), Central Punjab 6 (bowling four, batting two)

Player of the Final – Hasan Ali (Central Punjab)

I though the declaration would have gone CPs way to win the match, but that was done to tie the bonus points was very wise move...Also sending Kami back to where he belongs wow thats even great...

Extraordinary come back from Central Punjab under Hassan Ali to become joint winners after a poor start to the season.

Damn if bowling wasn't enough

Hasan ali scored a century :bow::bow:

He is in beast mode rn

Hassan almost won it for CP but Sajid Khan got Maqsood out at the end making it a tie. Extraordinary, don’t remember many tests or even 4 day matches being tied.

Watched it ball by ball. Hassan came in when they were 7 down and needed 150 or so. Unbelievable.

The bonus points would have made a difference if it was a draw. However, once the match was tied, both teams were always going to be winners, and bonus points were disregarded.

Ties are quite an unusual occurrence in FC cricket. This is only the 14th such incident in the past 30 years, which is crazy considering the amount of FC cricket that is played around the world.

Perhaps the first tied final ever..

Didnt watch the main but watched the highlights. breathtaking innings from hassan ali what an end to the match.

A statistical review of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21

Karachi, 6 January 2021:

The 63rd edition of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy had a thrilling finish with the final between Central Punjab, the defending champions, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ending in a tie.

A number of records were broken during the exciting 31-match tournament, played across four Karachi venues.

Tied first-class matches

In the 248 years history of first-class cricket, just 67 out of 60,296 matches have ended in a tie, which gives the result a probability of mere 0.11 percent.

On 5 January, that minute probability kicked in at the National Stadium Karachi where Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were declared joint-winners of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21 after the final between them ended with scores and first innings points levelled.

It was first time anywhere in the world that the final of a first-class competition ended in a tie whereas on Pakistan soil it was only the fifth tied first-class match after Lahore Blues v Bahawalpur in 1961, MCB v Pakistan Railways in 1983, Peshawar v Bahawalpur in 1988 and HBL v WAPDA in 2011.

Tied First-Class Matches in Pakistan
Year Venue Match
1961 Bahawalpur Lahore Blues v Bahawalpur
1983 Sialkot MCB v Pakistan Railways
1988 Bahawalpur Peshawar v Bahawalpur
2011 Lahore HBL v WAPDA
2021 Karachi Central Punjab v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Central Punjab were chasing 356 - a target no team has achieved in 66 years of first-class cricket at the National Stadium. They lost their last wicket on 355 making it the fourth highest total in a tied chase surpassing India’s 347 in the historic Test with Australia in Chennai in 1986.

37-year-old record broken

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa batsman Kamran Ghulam created a record for most runs in one edition of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy by scoring 1,249 runs in the tournament. He did it at an average of 62.45 and with 5 centuries, including the one in the final.

Saadat Ali, who scored 1,217 runs for HBFC in the 1983-84 season, held the previous record for most runs.

Kamran was also the first batsman with 1,100+ runs since Asad Shafiq amassed 1,104 runs in the 2009-10 season.

Off-spinners on the top

With 67 wickets at an average of 25.08, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sajid Khan finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker. Fittingly, he also took the last wicket of the season that tied the final. It is first time in eight seasons that an off-spinner is the highest wicket-taker of the tournament (the last being Atif Maqbool – 55 wickets in the 2012-13 season).

Sajid’s tally of 67 wickets is also the highest for an off-spinner in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy since 1995-96 when Bahawalpur’s Murtaza Hussain took 72 wickets at 15.08.

Fast bowlers back in action

Five fast bowlers took more than 25 wickets, which is a big change from the previous season when not a single pacer crossed the 25-wicket mark.

Central Punjab’s captain Hasan Ali – who won the Player of the Tournament and Player of the Final awards – led the pacers’ chart with 43 wickets at 20.06 followed by his teammate Waqas Maqsood (41 wickets).

Three other pacers with 25+ wickets in the 2020-21 season were: Tabish Khan (30 wickets for Sindh), Taj Wali (27 wickets for Balochistan) and Shahnawaz Dhani (26 wickets for Sindh).

Runs per wicket

Average runs per wicket across the last two editions of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy is 35.04, a figure that underlines a vast improvement in the quality of pitches and balls in Pakistan’s domestic cricket.

In 62 matches in the two seasons, 62,512 runs have been scored for 1,784 wickets. Since 2019, no first-class competition in the world has registered better runs per wicket.

For context, runs per wicket in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons was only 23.96.

Excellent commentary thread and a superb final. Loved reading every post!

Looks its comeback time for Hassan, and Usman, Saud and Ghulam must be hitting Wasim’s radar heavily.

Hasan needs to come in. His confidence is probably sky high rn, time for Naseem to go back into the wilderness and get some experience under his belt. I won’t swear him off like others here, maybe he can improve- no reason for him to doubt himself due to fans. You got some good experiences in NZ to bring you back to reality from the “I see fear I see dead people in batsman’s eyes” comments, time to build back up looking to improve and stay humble.

For now, it’s Hasan time.

Don't think Usman coming back and rightly so. At least 10 batsmen are ahead of him in the pecking order. For some reason both in media and PP people keep using his name along with Kamran as if they were even close to each other in terms of performance.
