Child marriage, or marriage before age 18, was legal in all 50 U.S. states as of 2017. Thanks to Unchained’s relentless advocacy, that is changing. Delaware and New Jersey in 2018 became the first two states to end this human rights abuse, followed by American Samoa in 2018, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Pennsylvania and Minnesota in 2020, Rhode Island and New York in 2021, Massachusetts in 2022 and Vermont, Connecticut and Michigan in 2023.

However, child marriage remains legal in 40 states and is happening in the U.S. at an alarming rate: Unchained’s groundbreaking research revealed that nearly 300,000 children as young as 10 were married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2018 – mostly girls wed to adult men.

Surely this is legal child abuse?

The reason for this thread is to inform, most people are not aware of this.

Why does the USA claim to be the civilised world, the land of the free and the rest?

According to data compiled by Anjali Tsui, Dan Nolan, and Chris Amico, who looked at almost 200,000 cases of child marriage from 2000 to 2015:
  • 67% of the children were aged 17.
  • 29% of the children were aged 16.
  • 4% of the children were aged 15.
  • Less than 1% of the children were aged 14 and under.
  • There were 51 cases of 13-year-olds getting married, and 6 cases of 12-year-olds getting married.

The US officially claims any form of child marriage is abuse, yet it doesnt apply this standard to its own people.

There are only a handful of USA mainstream news stories, here is one.

The culprits must be the usual ones- South Asian and African immigrants. I doubt anyone else does this kind of thing.

Middle eastern and Central Americans are 4 times likely to be the culprits

Also the average age difference between the males and females in 4 years. Men are usually 4 years older. Also majority of the states are the southern states.
