Here I wish to discuss the all-rounder who would be the best choice to join Gary Sobers in the all-time test XI as well as the best choice to replace Sobers at no6 as an allrounder

Best choice in order to accompany Sobers in all-time XI in order of merit

1.Imran Khan
2.Keith Miller
3.Richard Hadlee
4.Ian Botham
5.Mike Procter
6.Kapil Dev

Best choice to replace Sobers at no 6 in all-time XI in order of merit

1.Jacques Kallis
2.Keith Miller
3.Ian Botham
4.Imran Khan
5.Mike Procter
6.Kapil Dev

Imran would be a great choice to accompany Sobers being a great fast bowling all-rounder who could turn matches with the ball.Miller was another great match-winner but not proven as a leader as Imran.Botham was the most dynamic but not as great a specialist pace bowler as Imran or Miller. However at his best he was right at the top.In a proper career Procter may well have been the 1st choice as in pure skill arguaby he was at the top of the tree.Hadlee was the best fast bowler amongst allrounders but not as adept with the bat as Imran ,Miller,Botham or Procter.

To replace Sobers I voted for Kallis as though he lacked x factor he was phenomenally consistent.Miller championed cause with bat better than even Imran or Hadlee and surpassed Botham for consistency.Botham was the best in his peak who could change the fortunes of a game more than anyone with his explosive burst. However he was not at his best against the premier team of his day,West Indies and relatively lost form midway through his career.Kapil Dev was a Herculaes who could create the impact of a dynamite in full flow but lost out because of lack of consistency as a batsmen. The Botham of 1977-82 would have been my 1st choice.I feel if he had a full career Procter would again have been the ultimate choice.

I feel a fast bowling all-rounder is most appropriate to join Sobers and a great batting all-rounder is more suitable to replacing him.Preferred Botham or Miller as a replacement as they were more effective with the bat in terms of bowling domination.

I agree with your conclusion. Sobers while was a really good bowler was still a batting all rounder. I think only Kallis has a batting record anywhere close to him. Other all rounders are more suitable to join him at maybe no 6 or 7 but only Kallis is a like to like replacement in terms of batting and that too in top 4 or 5.

You can’t replace Sobers, though Kallis comes close.

Hadlee wasn’t a test allrounder - he was a hitter who would have been #8 in a strong batting line but usually batted at #7 in the Kiwi sides of his day.

We don’t know how Proctor would have gone in a prolonged test career though his bowling against the Aussies suggests that he was terrifying.

What about Imran Khan?Best to join Gary in a team?

Who is your choice to join Sobers in an all-time XI?

Who is your choice to join Sobers in an all-time XI?

I would get the three best bowlers - so Miller, Imran and Hadlee. Sobey can bowl SLA, or left arm swing if wickets aren’t coming.

The batting line would be Sobey at #5, then Miller, then Imran so he could bowl more, then Hadlee.

What about an All-Rounders Eleven?

1. Ravi Shastri
2. Eddie Barlow
3. Jacques Kallis
4. Garry Sobers
5. Mike Procter
6. Clive Rice
7. AB De Villiers
8. Keith Miller
9. Imran Khan
10. Alan Davidson
11. Richard Hadlee

What is your choice to join Sobers?Or to replace him?

I can have Imran and Sobers both or even Imran and Kallis both but no chance for Kallis/Sobers both.

So, an all time XI can be:-

Hobbs
Gavaskar
Bradman
Tendulkar
Viv/Lara
Sobers
Gilchrist (wkt)
Imran
Warne
Wasim
Marshall

Everyone can bat in this XI.

Shastri lol.

Sir Gary is unique - no one ever will replace him, in a timeless universe. Sobers scores his triple from No. 3, he is the best ever No. 6, could take the new ball, could spin it with finger & wrists, was the best 2nd slipper of his time ..... and I am sure he could have kept wicket or bat as opener. He played in a different era hence I won’t compare with other players from different era; but Sobers was bigger than his contemporaries than what was a Bradman, Hobbs or Syd Barnes was among their peers. Only blip in Sobers’s career might be that he was a below average Captain.

Imran won’t replace Sobers, because Khan himself has his own place in any AT XI - he was a better pick at 7, than Sir Gar; a fast bowler who would make the XI on bowling merit, and good enough to make most contemporary XI only as batsman. If anyone is to be considered as Sobers’s replacement, I probably will pick the closest guy to his type - Jacques Kallis.

Very analytical reply.appreciate.To accompany Sobers in an all time XI who would be your choice?

Your fascination of pace bowlers is again evident here - no way, no way Davidson comes ahead of Benaud, let alone Wasim. Most people are picking Wasim in their ATG Test XI and here you couldn’t accommodate him over Davidson!!!!!! Also, any given day - even EVERY Indian will pick Shakib over Shastri.

I think, Proctor & Rice shouldn’t make this list, though Proctor definitely would have made his spot had he added 50-60 more Tests with his 7. Vinnu Mankad should replace Shastri as opener, Shakib for Rice, Botham for Proctor and Wasim for Davidson, otherwise a fantastic list - somehow, if only I could pick Marshall here, but he doesn’t make it over Hadlee in this list.

Personally, I’ll drop Barlow and pick Benaud also, and he will be my skipper.
