I know its Pakistan news but I believe it certainly need attention over here.

In fact, I hope Cairns is successful in doing this.

-------------------------------------

Chris Cairns has announced he intends to sue Indian Premier League Commissioner Lalit Modi for comments made in relation to the IPL's decision to withdraw Cairns' name from the initial list of potential players.

Modi's comments appeared on his Twitter page and also in an interview with Cricinfo. "The allegation made by Lalit Modi that I have been involved in match fixing is scandalous and wholly untrue," Cairns said in a statement issued by Andrew Fitch-Holland, his solicitor. "For him to circulate such a falsehood around the world is outrageous. Mr. Modi's allegation has caused me huge personal distress and professional damage.

"I cannot allow these slurs to ruin my future and I have instructed my solicitors, Collyer Bristow LLP, to bring proceedings for defamation against Mr. Modi".

"This situation has really caused Chris terrible upset," Fitch-Holland told Cricinfo. "There appear to be a lot of negative feelings against him being generated as a result of Modi's comments.

"This is both hurtful and distressing for Chris but also damaging to his future prospects. We immediately took advice from Rhory Robertson at Collyer Bristow here in London, who is a leading specialist lawyer with extensive experience in both defamation and professional sports.

"Having spent much of the last day seeking this expert advice, we will now move quickly to fight the damage being done to Chris' reputation."

Good job Cairns. Hope you win. If he wins will IPL be shut down?

:))) :))) :)))

Lalit is certainly not having a good time lately. 1st it appeared that he might loose IPL but that got resolved somehow and now he will get sued.

:))) :))) :)))

Yes of course Dinesh Mongia and Chris Cairns were not involved in match fixing in the ICL - these allegations are totally false. lol

Assume the case will be filed in Indian courts as the alleged offence has taken place there.

Defamation rules and compensation in India are very different compared to the western world and particularly US.

Nothing to get overly excited about.

Even if Cairns has fixed ICL matches, I would love him to win the case! I think, he'll win -- because NOBODY could ever prove match fixing -- other than Cronje tapes.

You know nothing :)))

You can prove and disprove anything in our courts.

He can sue him in international courts because he gave his interview to international site.
Modi will lose.

Are you serious? :))
If the crime was committed in India...then it's Indian courts.
I want to see a law suit regardless :P

YOU know nothing. If that was the case, then why only Cronj's match fixing proved and nobody's else --- and I am not just our courts.

If the Indian courts are anything like Pakistani courts, then good luck Chris.

Similar I think and as a consequence Modi is going to chew him up and spit him out. Cairns doesn't stand a chance - he will be at it for years.....

The case is in India mate .......... we know how court cases take place in Sub Continent ........... good luck Cairns .....

Modi is an IPL Nazi. Like the soup NAZI in Sienfield, he can make his own rules or embarrass anyone he desires and if you want his soup, you have to put up with his attitude.

I would love to know what the exact remarks were? The case will probably be in India (where i assume Modi is domiciled) but this is not necessarily the case. If Modi is a rich man without a defence (which I believe he is) then this will probably be settled very quickly.

Is it Modi or IPL/BCCI? The statements were made by the guy who runs IPL, is also VP in BCCI

I think you would sue Modi in his personal capacity AND also sue the IPL since he was clearly making the comments as a representative of the IPL.

It probably is too much to hope that Cairns bankrupts the smacky. If he can sue him in a foreign court, go for it.

:)) He will take away your bread too!

Nothing is going to happen to Modi, let me reassure every one. The worst outcome possible for Modi, (and the best Cairns can extract) is that he will have to offer Cairns an IPL contract.

Be prepared to spend rest of your life in indian courts, Cairns.

To be fair, if you actually saw Chris Cairns batting in the ICL tournaments, you could clearly see he wasnt giving a 100%, he is such a fearsome striker of the ball, he comes in at a critical situation to bat and he bats so poorly, it was hard for me to believe he couldnt middle anything of the bat and then he got himself out in the most outrageous fashion after having seriously damaged his team.

The ICL indefinately suspended him and Dinesh Mongia for a reason. Sorry, but Modi must have pretty strong evidence to make these claims and as it is he has already said that if Cairn's wants to sue, he is more than welcome we will submit our documentary proof to the courts. So Cairn's needs to think long and hard before getting himself into a costly legal battle which will be bound to fail in the end.

For a moment or two I thought he might be suing him to 'insult and embarrass' Pakistani players :13:

Well at the moment I'll be taken CricInfo's word for it unless Lalit Modi pays him large sum of money behind the scenes. ;)

Chris Cairns v Modi

http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/current/story/453195.html

Just read the above article regarding comments made by Modi via his twitter page where he basically said Cairns wasn't invited to the auction because of his history in match fixing.

There were some murmurings in 2008 when Cairns was kicked out of the ICL that this was something to do with fixing games. Cairns maintains and the official word from the ICL is that it was for fitness reasons. The allegations were made in the masala media and not one piece of evidence has come to light.

For a high ranking cricketing official to make such a claim. On a social networking site no less, is disgraceful. Is this how he does business? Tarnishing the career of a player who seems to be a pretty good guy.

What will we have next, a member of parliament acussing a national team of throwing a game. Doh!

Who made him a high ranking cricketing official...

He has some over-hyped control over his IPl, but, that is as far as it goes...

Ever heard that saying from Notorious BIG

More Money, More Problems...

The more Modi continues to follow the green, the more he will lose sight and just watch IPL go bust in the next 2 years....

Probably Cairns himself.

"Modi is … possibly the most powerful man in world cricket today," Cairns said." from the article.

Did Cairns file a lawsuit against Modi? Remember him saying he is in talks with his legal representatives in London.

The rise to the top may have been easy, lets see how Modi will cope on his way down...

IPL is such a drawn-out series and my personal opinion is that seeing the likes of Ganguly vs Harbhajan or Gayle vs Bravo or Bopara vs Morgan is getting boring...

I casually watch IPL but, it does feel almost as good as having your small right toe amputated whilst sitting on the dentist chair...

Your view. Don't know if you are aware how it is going in India.

Release of new movies is postponed because they can't compete with IPL's popularity. Instead they are showing IPL in cinema halls. Hotels are offering special IPL dinners with giant screens.

There is nothing that tells me it is dying.

In India sure...So many young Indians playing in it, if it was the other way around and it was held in pakistan with young pakistany players playing against some of the top 'hasbeens' or 'wannabees' of the world then yes it would be hugely successful there too..

I guess its down to personal opinion, however sitting here in London I can tell you that for me its just overkill...Cricket's charm used to be trying to catch a test match on the radio or waiting for the 2pm at aintree to finish before returning to Benaud et al on the BBC...Sky television in the UK has made cricket more accessible and the amount of cricket now being shown by them is 'just' right. The IPL, imho, is taking it just too far!

That is India for you, my question is how do you feel with all these state teams representing India at the moment......which state do you like?

India, is booming in their economy but, you just get the feeling that, IPL will be short-term...

Modi's idea of competing or bettering NBA or English Premier League, makes me wonder if he lives with the fairies...

At least these leagues have genuine competition, Modi's idea of expanding IPL to 94 games stinks of someone of who wants to milk not one cow but, the entire countries cow's dry...

He said that Modi is refusing to be served with the originating writ/summons. This means that Cairns is indeed initiating court proceedings (possibly in England) but Modi is absconding for the time being, hiding behind his goons no doubt.

If he fails to respond to the summons then judgment can be awarded against him in default of his appearance in court. This judgment would then need to be enforced against Modi, probably in the courts of India, or any other place where Modi has assets. The latter is probably the better option since the Indian courts are a smoke screen and a sham and will probably be bought out by Modi.

If there is no proof, I'm guessing he definitely has a case of defamation here.

Not that any amount he will sue him for will even hurt Modi in the slightest.

Chris Cairns takes Lalit Modi to court

Chris Cairns takes Lalit Modi to court
WELLINGTON: Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns has finally acted on his threat to sue Lalit Modi and has initiated legal action against the suspended IPL commissioner for suggesting that he was involved in match-fixing.

Cairns' name was taken off the list of players auctioned in January for the third Indian Premier League and Modi, on his twitter page, had stated that the Kiwi was removed "due to his past record in match fixing."

Furious with Modi, the all-rounder had threatened legal action at that time but has initiated it only now.

"We are trying to have Modi served with papers. We're going through that process in India but it takes time to get through the court system. We're waiting for him, though," the 39-year-old told New Zealand Herald.

"If he decides to go to the UK we'll have him served there but it is so difficult to know his movements - especially with all the turmoil he's embroiled in. It's frustrating but we've initiated the process and just have to wait," he said.

Modi is himself facing allegations of corruption after a spectacular fall from grace but Cairns feels it still won't be easy to corner the flamboyant administrator.

"It was going to be tough anyway when you do something like this but we are left with no option. We will continue to pursue justice but at the moment he's also going through a process which needs to reach its conclusion before any judgement is passed," he said.

"We need to go through the proper channels to find out what to do next."

Asked if Modi's fall has left him feeling vindicated, Cairns said it doesn't matter to him as he is focused on getting himself cleared.

"I still have to go through this (to clear my name). There's not much emotion or anything like that but it is sad I've had to go through this process."

"The opportunity is gone now. I'm finished. There was that one window of opportunity in the IPL when I was asked to put my name forward but I'm 40 in three weeks so reality dictates, even though a return was a romantic notion."

Cairns, who got into diamond trade after finishing his cricket career, said he wants to give back to New Zealand cricket once the case against Modi is settled.

"Cricket's not part of my life at the moment. It'd be great to help out in a New Zealand capacity one day but because of what has happened I'm a bit of a poisoned chalice, really," he said.

"I'm a realist though and I'm not going to put people in a compromising position. Once this situation with Modi is sorted out I'm more than happy to help," he added

He will have to get in line, there might not be much of Modi left after the BCCI grinds him into the dust.

While Modi deserves to be sued, wouldn't it be in larger public interest if Cairns came out and cleared the doubts on why he was suspended from ICL (despite being one of the highest paid players there) midway through a tournament?

The big question is how many pages of evidence will he present in his defense in this case? :P

Modi will scrape through all of this...Is my gut feeling....Like getting single of last ball....seems to have answer to all questions

Cairns to face perjury charge

Former New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns will face a charge of perjury in the UK. The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that Cairns will face one count of perjury related to a libel action trial from two years ago.

A spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service said: "We can confirm that we have authorised police to charge Chris Cairns with one count of perjury, which arises from a libel trial held in the UK in March 2012."

The specific details have not been disclosed yet. All we know is that:

“We can confirm that we have authorised police to charge Chris Cairns with one count of perjury, which arises from a libel trial held in the UK in March 2012,” a spokeswoman said.

“We have also authorised police to charge Andrew Fitch-Holland with one count of perverting the course of justice, which arises from actions taken relating to the same trial. Both suspects will be formally charged by police in due course.”

Cairns charged with perjury

ESPNcricinfo staff

September 25, 2014

Chris Cairns, the former New Zealand allrounder, has been formally charged with perjury. Cairns attended a North London police station on Thursday to hear the charge, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

Andrew Fitch-Holland, a London barrister who gave evidence in the libel case against Lalit Modi from which the charge emanates, has also been charged with one count of perverting the course of Justice.

In a separate development, lawyers representing Modi have begun civil proceedings against Cairns to recover £90,000 paid in damages and costs following the libel case in 2012.

A previous statement from the Crown Prosecution Service statement said: "We can confirm that we have authorised police to charge Chris Cairns with one count of perjury, which arises from a libel trial held in the UK in March 2012.

"We have also authorised police to charge Andrew Fitch-Holland with one count of perverting the course of justice, which arises from actions taken relating to the same trial. Both suspects will be formally charged by police in due course."

Cairns, who flew from New Zealand to receive the charge, is expected to appear before London magistrates next week for an initial hearing at which he will enter a plea. The full hearing, which will be heard in the Courts of Justice in London, is not expected to be heard until at least May 2015.

Cairns will be able to return to New Zealand on the undertaking that he returns to the UK for the full hearing next year. He will also be eligible for legal aid.

There is no chance Modi will get his money back. Cairns has probably stashed his cash away somewhere in the Middle East (where he's recently been involved in the diamond business) hence the whole 'oh look I now clean bus shelters' drama.

Cairns free as Modi drops case

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11574680

It's fair to say that Mohammad Amir is the last thing to do with fixing that any New Zealanders have in mind now.

Lalit Modi has filed to discontinue his case against Chris Cairns. Not only is Cairns now completely exonerated, but he seems likely to be re-employed by Sky Television (NZ).

Modi has his own set of more serious troubles in India. I don;t think he wants his name anywhere in the news. One reason why he has been very very quiet.

Don't think Sky would want to hire Cairns, especially with current Black Cap players having issues with him.

Sky's response to Cairns commentating for sky again, pretty much he'd need to apply for a role (if one were to open) and be the best candidate (unlikely with fans not accepting him back). Interesting to hear that he left the commentary role with SKY on his own.

Not to mention the current commentators making sly digs at cairns on air recently.

No point suing someone who doesn't have any coin.

Junaids what are your thoughts on Brendan Mcculums involvement in this case and his retirement which would follow which he deemed to have been inspired by the stress of the Cairns trial

Cairns has completely escaped the radar and limelight.

Savak

It is Brendan McCullum who has completely escaped scrutiny.

His sworn evidence under oath at Southwark Crown Court was that Cairns rang him while he was at dinner with Ricky Ponting and invited him to a meeting to discuss an offer to fix.

McCullum told the court that he kept this secret from Ponting but attended the meeting, at which Cairns showed him graphs and charts of how to fix, and according to McCullum's evidence to the court Cairns then offered him large amounts of money to fix IPL matches.

McCullum's testimony was that he then failed to notify the ICC of this for 2.5 years, even though when Amir, Asif and Butt were caught and convicted during those 2.5 years it become widespread public knowledge that there was a mandatory minimum 5 year ban at that time for failure to report illegal approaches.

By the time McCullum gave that evidence in court, the reporting lines for the ICC Anti Corruption Unit had changed, with the ACSU then reporting directly to a Mr N Srinivasan, of Chennai, India.

Strangely enough, the ICC never did charge McCullum, in spite of his sworn confession in court.

So he should have been punished for not reporting the approach.

This is why I repeatedly tag you Junaids because I know you have the answers and while I have my theories need some confirmation! Am just bemused by how B-Mac has got away Scot free and everyone seems to be cool with it including the public

I have no idea what you could be talking about. I'm not accusing anyone of anything, just pointing people towards sworn evidence from court and interesting timelines.

Funnily enough, the timeline is VERY interesting in this case.

N Srinivasan was ICC Chairman from June 2014 to November 2015.

And in 2014 and 2015 when McCullum was giving statements followed by incredibly incriminating evidence, the ACSU reported to.......N Srinivasan.

At the same time that McCullum's IPL team was........Chennai Super Kings.

Failure to report an approach is a ban.

From Wikipedia, the material actually seems to favor McCullum "On 13 December 2014, McCullum was named New Zealander of the Year by the New Zealand Herald beating out stiff competition from Lane Pilkington due to his continued co-operation with ICC over the match-fixing scandal which resulted in Chris Cairns being charged for lying to court".

If really McCullum did something wrong and it can be traced to a reliable source, then it should be added to Wikipedia.
