Is Chris Gayle a Great?

Good but not a great.. Good bowling exposes his flaws. Take for example big bash where the bowling standard as a whole is higher than IPL . Gayle failed in almost every match there IIRC. But he murders mediocre bowlers.

Nope. Bowling and batting standards have been superior in IPL simply because of better players. Only thing is that pitches over there are more supportive to quicks while our pitches haven't yet given much assistance to spinners. Anyway, Gayle has hit some big ones in Big Bash as well and we're only talking about one knock here. This could have come anywhere. Many of the BBL players have failed in IPL.

What have Bradly Hodge and Mark Ramprakash done in international cricket? Gayle has amazing int' stats as well. Not many players have got 20+ ODI hundreds and 2 test triple tons to their name. I am sorry, but that was a very lame comparison. Hodge and Ramprakash should be compared to Wasim Jaffer and not Chris Gayle.

He does not have amazing international stats at all, he barely averages 40 in Test cricket. In the modern age thats not even good.

He's been pretty consistent with that 40sh average unlike some who average 80 in some places and 20 at other. Gayle as a batsman can BRING IT against any team, against any line-up and in any format.

Come on. He is averaging in low to mid 30's against 4 test playing nation( Eng/Ind/Pakistan/SL). He is a wonderful striker and entertainer but not a great test bat.

A great in my opinion. Its the whole package that counts not just a player's test playing ability.

A consistent average of 40 which doesn't dip against a superior bowling attack in tougher conditions unlike for many of the 50+ batsmen who cant manage a 30sh average when the going gets tough. Not to mention his ODI heroics put him among the finest in that format.

Some people are obviously still awe-struck by his T20 heroics but come on test great? His last test series vs Bangladesh, he couldn't even average in double digits. He's a T20 great if you can call one but just a 'good' player in all other formats, nothing more-nothing less.

He is a great "entertainer" but not a great of the game as 50% of the people on here think.

His statistics in IPL are truly Bradman-esque, but since when did IPL become the benchmark of measuring a players greatness?

In international T20's i think he has the fifth highest SR and the fifth highest avg, so i guess we could call him a T20 great!

His ODI stats are good, avg of 38 at a SR of 84. I would put him in the category of Tier 2 greats in ODI's if anything, along with Sehwag and co. Has scored 604 runs at an avg of 32 in WC's which is strictly OK.

Gayle has been good in tests in phases, but would he even make it to the top 25 batsmen of the modern era? I doubt that.

So my answer would be NO, as of now.

He has a good five years to go in his career, maybe he can perform consistently in tests and the 2015 WC to change my opinion!

definently in ODI and t20 cricket but not in tests although he has played some memorable knocks such as the one against australia at the wacca

A gun player no doubt. One of the best bats in the world.

But in all likelihood he won't be considered a great player because of his test exploits. Still, he has time to change that around.

The guy has two triples-one of them against SAF and other against SL. He has underperformed in tests but he hasn't been an utter failure at all.

I never said he was a failure.

Those two triples show that he has the temperament and the ability to excel in Test match cricket; however, with an average of around 40 , no one will consider him to be a great.

^

For an opener, 42 is a pretty decent average. He's got 15 hundreds in that format including two triples. Certainly a proper test batsman, his defense is underrated. Gayle can with stand quality bowling attacks longer than many of those 50+ averaging batsman. He's never really been an FTB, his best may come anywhere on any pitch against any bowlers. I can recall some freakish hundreds in Australia and England.

^^

Lillee, Imran, Hadlee etc. would have exposed his lack of footwork and mullered him.

I'd have said that he was close to being a great ODI player but then I checked and KP's record in that format is as good as his. KP is also a significantly better test player but I wouldn't call him great either - just very very good, like Gooch and Gower.

^ Maybe he bats the way he does because there are no Lillees, Imrans or Hadlees now? It is almost no use speculating what the present day batsmen would have done against past bowlers, because batsman's goals and methods have significantly changed. Today's batsman's requirement is to learn how to score off today's bowlers.

Openers of the 80s were usually content with scoring at a S/R of 40-45 and their emphasis was to put a heavy price on their wicket. Today's batsman are more aggressive and try to score faster and we are looking at S/Rs of 60 these days and it is natural that they will be a tad easier to dismiss, especially by good bowlers.

Not a chance in hell.

Great? I can't even begin to understand how the term can exist even in the same ballpark with Gayle.

Do people even know the meaning of the word 'great'?

Heck of a striker of the ball, fantastic at 20:20 and maybe ODIs. But great?

Don't make me laugh.

did i miss something....a score against the mighty SL attack on a slow pitch and this thread comes to life.
the just concluded CT did justice to his abilities.

.

Many would be exposed and not just Gayle, if anything Gayle will beat a number of higher averaging batsmen because his average is lower because he throws his wicket away and plays as an opener. Guy usually has little issues with the pitch and the quality of bowing he faces.

I would regard Chris Gayle as outstanding T-20 batsman and a superb ODI batsman. In tests, I don't think he could be regarded as a really great player because of his inconsistency. I have not seen his stats in detail but I have never considered him a great test player, even though at times could be a dangerous customer in that format as well.

I can safely say he is a 'Great Entertainer' due to his on-field exploits of power hitting, gangnam style heroics etc. A player who gave you maximum value to your ticket, when he was on song.

He reminds me of Inzamam... an absolute beast against trundlers on batting friendly surfaces.

Always a joy to watch him... It's an absolute thrill to watch some of his shots. Love him... Definitely a legend in my eyes.

He is not out of form. This is probably his greatest ever strategy. He's gonna defend initially and keep himself alive till the final 5 overs where all hell would break loose. If you're yet to play Gayle, be afraid. He is finally acting like a GREAT.:viv

So would you say Inzi is a legend then

He's an ODI and T20 great but in Tests Id say he's a second tier great as an opener he could have achieved a lot more in Tests but his attitude and lack of passion for Test Cricket let him down. He has played some great test knocks but I think his time as a top class international player is over he looks past his best now

Big match situation. Pressure chase,. Gayle goes into Sparta mode.

Finally Gayle looking somewhat close to international standard.
Not really a great, but good fun when he gets going once in a while

Five years ago I would have said that Gayle was at least an ODI great but he has performed poorly since then.

If you are picking an ATG T20 XI, he's the first name on the sheet.

To make a great ODI player he'd really have to do something special like win a WC and score heavily doing it.

I think he's missed his chance to be a test great.

Nothing special about his personality, acts like rest of the 13 to 19 year old Jamaicans.

He has two test triple hundreds to his name by the way. As an opener his stats are pretty good if not great.

Congrats to the big man on scoring his first ODI double hundred. By the time he retires, he should have at least three of those.

CHRIS GAYLE TO JOIN THE SKN PATRIOTS HERO CPL T20 FRANCHISE

The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots announces the acquisition of one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era, Chris Gayle, as the newest member of the Patriots family.

The undisputed King of T20 cricket has signed a new contract which will see him become the headliner in the Patriots team for the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season. Gayle previously led the Jamaica Tallawahs in all four editions of the Hero CPL – winning the championship twice, in 2013 and earlier this year in 2016.

Commenting on his transfer, Gayle said he is proud of what he achieved with his native Jamaica Tallawahs, and is now looking forward to taking a fresh guard with the Patriots whose home base is ‘Sugar City’ St. Kitts.

“I am a proud Jamaican and I loved representing the Tallawahs. I would like to thank the owners and management who have been brilliant to work with, my team-mates who always gave me 100% support, and of course the Jamaican fans who made Sabina Park such a special home ground for me.

“Moving to St. Kitts is a move which hugely excites me at this time. As with all franchise leagues, there is always the opportunity to move from one team to another and I am looking forwards to joining the Patriots for the upcoming season.”

Uday Nayak, Co-Owner & Team Principal of the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots said “We are overjoyed to have Gayle join the franchise and, on behalf of co-owners Nirvan Veerasamy, Mohammed Ansari and myself, I would like to welcome one of the world’s greatest batsmen to the Patriots squad for the forthcoming Hero CPL season. This is a transfer I am certain will capture the imagination of our many fans in St. Kitts, the Caribbean and beyond.”

The Patriots co-owner also expressed thanks to the Tallawahs owners Ron Parikh and Manish Patel for what Nayak described as their professionalism in facilitating Gayle’s move.

Nayak added: “Chris’ record is phenomenal, not just in the West Indies, but across the cricketing world. He has a reputation that is revered everywhere and is the kind of player who will drive our team forward. This is one of the biggest transfers in Hero CPL history and I know from speaking with Chris that he is motivated to do well for his new franchise. Success has followed Chris throughout his career and we as owners will give him and the team our full support to achieve similar success for the Patriots in 2017.”

Certainly a great of the game. Two triple hundreds, both away from home. One vs RSA in RSA with an attack that boasted the likes of Nitini and Pollock. A 200 too. 22 Centuries in ODI's and a WC double hundred. Undisputed king of T/20's and Franchise cricket. Enough to say he is a great. But the fact is, his board did not play him in his last 3-4 years where he could have even bettered that record..

Borderline great. "One of the greatest of the modern era..." is overrating him a whole lot.
