What's new

Coconut: BBC's idea of a Pakistani migrant!

Absolutely trash ..No one acts or talks like that in real life . This is so 80s humor its actually embarrassing. Turns me right off .

There is humor and then there's crass, BBC just forgot where the line is between the two! What's even more annoying is that this stupidity is funded by public money.

They avoided broadcasting cricket for decades on the basis of cost but somehow though this short series was a sensible investment! Disgraceful!

Watched 2 minutes,

Safe to say there wasnt much 'investment'

Going by the comments the Humza guy is sorta famous British Pakistani comedian?

Why are Pakistanis caricatured in such a way in British shows. Only other British show of recent times with a huge Pakistani presence is Citizen Khan and even there its more of the same

British Pakistanis themselves are partly to blame. Someone pointed me towards this show when it was on Youtube and I couldn't believe people thought it was funny but apparently they do. But then Citizen Khan is popular and even some posters here thought it was funny so maybe it's just me.

Tbf compared to this this Citizen Khan is like House of Cards

Waste of money and god awful, come fly with me and little britain were much better but I think both were cancelled

I agree. citizen Khan might be misdirected but at least it is written by someone with some modicum of talent. This show is just some guy making home videos in his bedroom.

Unbelievably terrible. Pakistanis and Indians need to stop this bakwas. Enough is enough. No wonder we don't get decent roles in any movies. As I said before, most of these famous desi expats like aziz ansari and Russell peters make money off of making fun of their own culture. This may be made by BBC but these desi idiots need to have some bloody self respect.

Aziz Ansari's comedy is very rarley ethnic centric

Russell Peters big yes. But Aziz is generally not an ethnic comedian

His new show relies heavily on it. He's pretty awful anyway. So many desi comedians are the same. There's a new brown guy on Netflix. I wasted 10 minutes of my life watching his show and it was the same making fun of accent and strict desi parents bs. Desis will never be taken seriously abroad because we are happy with this garbage. Someone needs to break the mould

Well there's Riz Ahmed, Dev Patel, and Avan Jogia. Theyr're all brown and don't get typecasted.

Oh I remember this guy Hamza, he had a YouTube channel with the badman series, found it hilarious when I was 12. It was kind of funny with morals at the end, even though this bbc series isn't my cup of chai (actually not a fan of British humor in general) but glad to see he has moved up in life and is getting gigs with guys like BBC.

Wish more desis would pursue the arts overseas be it musical or theatrical. It is very hard to pursue that given the expectation of Desi parents and how there are only 3 fields you can pursue, so mad respect to any person of Desi descent who makes it big in the industry, like Riz Ahmed for e.g.

Aziz Ansari is awesome. Haven't watched his stand up but he always nails it as the comic relief guy in any tv series he plays, most of which I think he comes up on his own.

Like Tom Haverford in p and r.

His delivery and style is something the other overseas brown comedians can't match.

JusReign is also good. Russell Peters is bakwaas. Same routine every time.

Stupid video and certainly not funny. British Pakistanis neither talk or dress like that. Idiot! Pakistanis are one of the few communities in the UK who have not become coconuts. Compared to most others we have kept our own culture.

I always liked Goodness Gracious me tbf and nothing wrong to be able to laugh at oneself, but this wasn't good.

People give Riz a lot of credit and he deserves it coz Nighcrawler and Rogue one,but I still think Kumail Nanjiani is better not forget The big sick getting the acclaim as well.

I love Humza Arshad but this program was absolutely thrash. I watched the first few episodes and didn't bother watching the remaining ones when they came out. Seeing a lot of hate for Citizen Khan, I think that's really funny and one of my favourite shows but I don't think it will last long on BBC one because people who aren't desi can't relate to it and some people who are desi are religious people who get offended by this comedy. But back to coconut, it was not funny at all which is a shame because I love HumzaProductions, diary of a badman was great and some of his recent videos have been good too

Good shout! that was the one diary of a badman lmao I thought I had seen him some where, man even those video's were 10x better then this trash he has done for the BBC, am pretty sure those old videos had like millions of views to. Glad to see no one gives a damn about this BBC rubbish, but I suppose with the BBC being such a big company maybe this was him trying to get a foot in the door.

There are so many high calibre shows which are BBC productions including The Last Kingdom, And Then There Were None, Paula, Clique, Sherlock, SS-GB, Line of Duty and Taboo etc Maybe Humza can build on his BBC relation and get himself onto one of those shows one day like Riz Ahmed who has done quiet well for himself

But I doubt Riz Ahmed did crappy shows like this ever

Gigs like this stick to your reputation and it will be difficult to break out of this mould

True, am just trying to see what may have influenced Humaza's decision to go for this stint; I wouldn't have taken the deal but Humza may have seen it as a stepping stone to better gigs with the BBC

Diary of a Badman was probably okay for some Youtube homemade video, but the BBC is a national broadcaster. I realise the bar is set lower for desi comedians because they have to pander to stereotypes first and foremost, but I think the BBC has to have some quality control.

Yeah man, if I were him in his position and got offered a job from BBC I'd take it too. He's just trying to put his foot through the door in the industry and sometimes you gotta take some roles in unflattering projects, but if the name of the production company is big you gotta go for it.

Series of a bad man was nice but after like 6 or 7 years he was going nowhere with it.

Yes,it was bad,I have no issues if the humor quotient is good or atleast the writing,I'm assuming the budget was low as is for any BBC show, all good writers are now writing for themselves(youtube) or for something that pays better netflix/HBO/amazon

Imo BBC is going downhill, remember even one of the British actors from Game of thrones saying GOT would had been a disaster if BBC produced it coz of low payment.

They've always been decent and had some gems but I'd say it's a golden age for BBC right now when it comes to producing high calibre drama shows at the moment, they have stepped their game given the competition from Amazon UK and Netflix, these are all very good: The Last Kingdom, And Then There Were None, War and Peace, Taboo, Paula, Clique, Sherlock, SS-GB, Line of Duty etc

My favourite which I've seen are Clique, Taboo, Dickensian, and The Last Kingdom. HBO pump so much money into GOT, I doubt the free to air BBC would have picked it up tbh they have an excellent machine behind them, Coconut is trash; it was expected to be nothing more then a web series though it seems and no one is watching it which is great, if that was acting as the pilot they won't be picking it up for a full blown series

All comedians do that, from Americans and Jews, to African-Americans and Pakistanis. None knows a community except its own members, which is they become the best commentators/comedians of it.

Maybe its the nostalgia,I personally felt BBC had better shows earlier, when they would make it to this side of the world and still be great compared to American ones, not the case anymore atleast in my personal opinion,The last Kingdom was good though but I guess bbc isn't global anymore.

Saw the 2 episodes, was awful comedy am convinced that there are decision makers within the BBC of indian backgrounds that give their backing to this crap.

You must have been really bored to watch 2. I just flicked through one and it's utter garbage. Even immigrants dont speak with such stupid accents. Waste of licence payers money.

Bring back Goodness Gracious Me
