Coke Studio - Season 11

I’ve got this playing on a loop. Last I heard, the legendary Gumby is a part of this project, but I suspect he didn’t show up for this song because Ali Hamza is producing this season and after Gumby’s last falling out with the Noori brothers, he doesn’t want to have anything to do with them.

I loved the tenor and timbre of the vocalist. It was great to hear a song in what the Iranians used to derisively call Subuk-e-Hindi, i.e. Difficult Urdu. There’s been a tradition of Farsi kalam singing, and one used to be able to hear the odd Farsi kalam at the various Sufi shrines, and it was invariably sung in this manner, i.e. without attempting a true Persian accent, which most of us can never quite get right.

Gutted with the song lenght tho. Could easily have been much longer.

Yes, could’ve been longer with a bit more lyrics, could’ve had the guitar part more subdued and another instrument added, and could’ve also highlighted the harmonica part more.

Another useless episode. Really wanted to like Nami Danam but just couldn't get into it. Singer reminded me of this guy who sings on Amir Liaquat shows. Harmonica was completely unnecessary and out of place, could have used flute in its place. Guitars were jangly and this whole Sufi Rock thing has just become too much of a cliche now for me....just didn't get it.

He is the guy from ALH shows: Sherry Raza. I was intrigued by his voice and looked him up, and his Twitter feed is full of pictures with ALH and various statements expressing his support for Pakistan’s premier televangelist.

How he ended up with the likes of Momo and Gumby I don’t know, but whatever his beliefs, he knows his kalams, as some of the other Chand Tara Orchestra songs show, and I quite liked his unique voice, and he has a certain charisma.

So, i count around 8 artists are still to feature. Today, on Sunday, it's 21st of Zilhaj. That means only one Friday before the month of Muharram.

So, i guess the next is going to be the finale of this ordinary season. Almost every song is a duet so i guess we could have four songs in the next episode which i presume will be the finale.

Hassan Jehangir, Ahad Raza Mir, Mishaal Khwaja, Bilal Khan, Abrar, The sketches, Sounds of Kolachi, Jawad Ahmed, Elizabeth Rai,Mangal Darehan and Shayan, Ali Sethi, Humaira A rshad . Muhghal-e-Funk, Shamu Bai and Vishnu

Actually, 14 artists/bands are still to feature. 25 have already featured producing 14 songs.

So, it means probably two more episodes to come. Shall we see the remaining season after the month of Muharram?

Sorry bro, just his resemblance to that guy was annoying to me and after finding out that he is actually the same guy, the song is just totally ruined for me. I can understand that he has to make a living as well but why support ALH on Twitter.

What does he sing on the shows? I’ve never really seen ALH’s programs, other than the clips that end up being controversial, a la the mango one, the Ghalib one etc.

I've only seen clips as well, its hard to watch a whole ALH show as you can imagine.

He really sings everything. No particular tastes or style in particular. Filmi songs, pop songs, folk songs.

Don't the last couple of episodes normally end up in Muharram?

Never been a fan of this show but this season has been the weakest of all seasons.

Bayaan just won Pepsi Battle of the Bands.

Sung their 1st ever song "Nahin Milta" in the last episode to wrap things up.

The last finale was released couple of days before the month of Muharram. You know the lunar year is 10-11 days shorter than Gregorian calendar so, with every passing year Muharram starts 10 days earlier with respect to Gregorian calendar. Where as Coke studio has not changed their yearly schedule as the season starts with the on set of August every year. So, this is the first time that we are seeing this clash with the month of Muharram.

I am debating which Qawal's Nami Danam is better. Of course NFAK is probably the favorite bur Sabri brothers did a pretty melodious rendition as well.

Came across this gem while listening to coke studio. It sounds once an year song to me. A drama soundtrack composed by Soch band.

Most of the times the same recipe has not produced the same effect second time around in coke studio but Malang sounds as good as Baazi. Singers, language and genre all are same yet the song might surpass Baazi itself.

Saw they changed to Chan Kithan in the second verse, is it part of Malang or did they fuse it? Sethi's rendition of Chan Kithan is still my favourite btw.

Dil Hai Pakistani very relevant. Still am of the opinion that no one can match Ali Azmats range.

Finally something you can listen to again and again...Ilallah is probably the best (at least for me) in CS 11.

Music, lyrics and instruments were all brilliant.

Rest was pretty useless.

Apparently there are still few more episodes but this break doesn't make sense, they should schedule it after Eid ul fitr and finish well before Muharram.

Indeed, Illallah is the song of the season thus far. The music is carefully crafted, quite unlike some of the hackneyed compositions CS has dished out recently. There’s even an electric sitar solo, which is a first on this show.

I also noticed that one of the Sounds of Kolachi vocalists is Nimra Rafiq, who was a backing vocalist in Season 9, and Gul Mohammad, the guest sarangi player, also appeared on Shafqat Amanat Ali’s Khamaaj way back in 2009 in Season 2.

Didn't know who she is but she did extremely well, overall this sounds like AR Rahman masterstroke.

Electric Sitar bit was good too.

I heard Illallah once (only because I had a notification) and liked it, will re listen a few more times to absorb it better. To be honest this season has been really bad (unlike ones from the recent past where I fell with many songs right off the bat) and couldn't resonate with any song apart from Roye Roye, Muhammad Qawwal and Bros just don't have the magic that Rang had (forget if its last year or the one before), but we had Naina Moray, Allah u Akbar, Tu Kuja, Maula e Kul etc.

I haven't listened to the new songs for the past 2 weeks, would be great if you had some recommendations.

Apart from Ilallah, the Ali Azmat one with Riaz Qadri from the same episode was catchy enough, although the riffs and melody sound like they are from his Social Circus album from 2005. I find myself listening to Nami Danam quite a bit too, even though there are so many ways the song could've been better than it turned out to be.

This season has been a big disappointment for me personally. Even my fav Ali Azmat wasn't up to his usual mark.

Dare I say it but maybe its time to warp up Coke Studio. After eleven seasons of any show, its hard to keep things fresh, interesting and original. Before you know it, even the best shows after so many seasons tend to become self parodies, which has been the case with CS as well. Sadly, this show has lives its life imo. Maybe come back next year with a different name, format, producers and shake things up a bit.

Does anyone here feels Coke Studio should continue with Ali Hamza and Zohaib Kazi for next season?

Absolutely NOT.

They're taking this show nowhere. I can't believe that they've managed to mess up even Abida Parveen's songs

Man, that Ko Ko Korina rendition was a huge mess. This season has been a huge letdown apart from 2 or 3 songs.

Just not sure what has gone wrong. I almost sense that there will be a false sense of bravado as there are a lot more reaction channels on utube this year as opposed to last year for CS but that has only been due to the continued success of CS.

I am.a big fan of Noori but producing these many songs and that too Hamza alone from the brothers along with Kazi has not been the instant hit one has looked forward to. While Strings were constantly ostercized for not living up to the original standards I feel that they had a very good idea of what worked and didn't work, almost every season had a breakout song and the remaining songs in the season also we're able to maintain the CS sound, however this year has been subpar with only about 3-4 songs repeat worth (2 of them.being qawaals), too much Abida jee which frankly did not work as none of her songs had that great hook, Ali Azmat was not his usual awesome self. Ali Sethi should have been used more

Also, was the last episode season finale? I do t believe there are any more singers left from the lineup, if it was the last episode and ko ko korina was the final song than it just about sums up the quality of this seaosn

On a positive though I will say I did enjoy BTS this year a lot more than Strings era, artists creative vision was mentioned a lot more with a greater focus on the entire ensemble creating and delivering each song

I have been listening to the last few seasons of Coke Studio on SoundCloud minus this season. I have to admit, I was too hard on the Strings. They made some really good songs. Happen to catch Ali Sethi's rendition of "Umran Langiyaan". What a beautiful song and amazing vocals by Sethi. There are some others on Strings seasons which were pretty good. I guess you appreciate people more when they are gone, especially after the disaster that was this season.

Another thing which I could not explain. How were the songs of Coke Studio Explorer (minus the Lahore song) so well done and great, each song stood on their own and had a heart. How come the season end up being so bad. Can anyone shed light on that.

+ 1

limited talent in terms of creation. Just putting twelve musicians in one place does not work. The lack of original tunes, the original tunes being dull and boring, the remixes not really blending in, absolutely disappointing.

Below average almost every single song despite having so much to work with.

Thrilled and excited. I don't think its confirmed yet but looks very likely.

If things don't work out, coke studio might end here. The news of his rejoining is only couple of days old, we will surely know in next few days.

He had expressed the desire to do one last season when he was jettisoned from the show, so this could well be that one last season.

Rumor has it that the last few years had been rife with interference from the corporate overlords, quite unlike the free rein Rohail had in the beginning. It remains to be seen if he will have the sort of leverage he enjoyed in those heady early seasons. Nevertheless, I’m sure I won’t be alone in waiting with bated breath for this season.
